I want her to know what she will never learn in childbirth classes. I consider warning her that she will never read a newspaper again without asking “What if that had been my child?” That when she sees pictures of starving children, she will look at the mothers and wonder if anything could be worse than watching your child die. I feel I should warn her that no matter how many years she has invested in her career, she will be professionally disturbed by motherhood She might successfully arrange for child care, but one day she will be waiting to go into an important business meeting, and she will think about her baby’s sweet smell. She will have to use every ounce of discipline to keep from running home, just to make sure he is all right. I want her to know that however decisive she may be at the office, she will second- guess herself constantly as a mother. That her life, now so important, will be of less value to her once she has a child. That she will give it up in a moment to save her child, but will also begin to hope for more years, not so much to realize her own dream, but to watch her child realize his. Researchers at the University of Texas discovered that people are worse at conducting tasks and remembering information if they have a smart phone within eye shot. In two experiments they found phones sitting on a desk or even in a pocket or handbag would distract users and lead to worse test scores even when it was set up not to disturb test subjects. The effect was measurable even when the phones were switched off, and was worse for those who were more dependent on their mobiles. The researchers tested 520 university students on their memory and intelligence when in the presence of a smart phone to see how it affected them. Participants were told to complete tests in mathematics, memory and reasoning with their smart phones either on their desk, in their bag or pockets,or in another room. Those who had their phones on the desk recorded a 10 per cent lower score than those who left them in a different room on operational tasks, which measures working memory and focus. Those who kept their phones further out of sight in their pockets or their bags scored only slightly better than when phones were placed on desks. The researchers found that the negative effect of having a phone within eye shot was much greater among those who said they were dependent on their smart phones. Participants who had expressed sympathy with phrases such as “I would have trouble getting through a normal day without my cellphone” and “using my cellphone makes me feel happy” performed as well as others when their phone was in a different room, but worse when it was placed on their desk. The researchers said the effect arises because part of a smart phone users’ mind is devoted to trying not to think about distractions such as whether they have any messages when the smart phone is in their sight. 8. For the people who scored the lowest, where did they put their cellphone? A. On the desk B. In their bags. C. In their pockets. D. In a different room. 9. Which of the following will the researchers most probably agree with? A. People shouldn’t have a smart phone. B. Phones wouldn’t distract users when switched off. C. Those depending on mobiles are more likely to be distracted. D. Their research has completely changed people’s view on smart phones. 10. According to the study, why did cellphones affect the participants? A. Using cellphones made them feel happy. B. They focused on trying to ignore distractions. C. They spent much time on the received messages. D. They couldn’t get through a day without cellphones. 11. Where does the text probably come from? A. Book review. B. A Science fiction. C. Cellphone advertisement. D. A news report. A 9. C 10. B 11. Those who kept their phones further out of sight in their pockets or their bags scored only slightly better than when phones were placed on desks. The effect was measurable even when the phones were switched off, and was worse for those who were more dependent on their mobiles. The researchers said the effect arises because part of a smart phone users’ mind is devoted to trying not to think about distractions such as whether they have any messages when the smart phone is in their sight. D。 D Two powerful NASA telescopes have detected the oldest and most distant black hole ever found. Data collected via energetic X-rays by the Chandra X-ray Observatory and James Webb Space Telescope has helped astronomers spot the signature of a growing black hole within the early universe just 470 million years after the big bang, which occurred 13.8 billion years ago. The discovery, described in a study published in Nature Astronomy, may help astronomers figure out how some of the first supermassive black holes formed in the universe. “We needed Webb to find this remarkably distant galaxy (星系) and Chandra to find its supermassive black hole, “ said lead study author Akos Bogdan, in a statement. ”We also took advantage of a cosmic magnifying glass (宇宙放大镜) that boosted the amount of light we detected. “ He was referring to an effect called gravitational lensing (引力透镜效应), which occurs when closer objects act like a magnifying glass for distant objects. Gravity essentially twists and strengthens the light of distant galaxies in the background of whatever is doing the magnifying, enabling observations of otherwise invisible features. Astronomers detected the black hole in a galaxy called UHZ1. At first glance, the galaxy appeared in the same direction as a cluster of galaxies known as Abell 2744, which is located about 3. 5 billion light-years from Earth. But data collected by the Webb telescope showed that UHZl is actually much farther away and located beyond the cluster at 13. 2 billion light-years from Earth. The team used the Chandra Observatory to detect superheated gas releasing X-rays within UHZ1, the obvious sign of a supermassive black hole growing in size. The detection was made possible by the Abell cluster of galaxies, which intensified the light of the UHZ1 galaxy and the X-rays released by the black hole by a factor of four. Astronomers think the discovery will help them better understand how supermassive black holes appeared and reached their huge masses so soon after the beginning of the universe. 12. What’s the possible age of the newly-found black hole? A. 470 million years. B. 13.33 billion years. C. 13. 8 billion years. D. 14. 27 billion years. 13. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The process of the research. B. The significance of the discovery. C. The contributors to the discovery. D. The background of the research. 14. Which best shows the position of Abell 2744, Earth and UHZ1? A. B. C. D. 15. Which can be a suitable title for the text? A. The Oldest and Most Distant Black Hole Spotted. B. Two Powerful NASA Telescopes Coming into Service. C. New Supporting Evidence of the Big Bang Theory Detected. D. Astronomers Figuring Out How the First Black Holes Formed. 【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. Gravity essentially twists and strengthens the light of distant galaxies in the background of whatever is doing the magnifying, enabling observations of otherwise invisible features.(“我们需要韦伯来发现这个非常遥远的星系,需要钱德拉来发现它的超大质量黑洞,”该研究的主要作者阿科斯·波格丹在一份声明中说。我们还利用了一个宇宙放大镜来增加我们探测到的光的数量。他指的是一种叫做引力透镜的效应,当较近的物体像放大镜一样放大远处的物体时,就会发生这种效应。从本质上讲,引力扭曲并增强了背景中遥远星系的光,使人们能够观察到其他不可见的特征。)”可知,第二段主要讲述了这一发现的贡献者。故选C。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Astronomers detected the black hole in a galaxy called UHZ1. At first glance, the galaxy appeared in the same direction as a cluster of galaxies known as Abell 2744, which is located about 3. 5 billion light-years from Earth. I joined them. One boy held up a worm(蠕虫), and with an extremely strong pull, he tore the poor creature in half. How could anyone be so cruel? I ran to the nearest playground supervisor(主管人)to report the incident. The supervisor sighed and waved me away. Something had to be done. When I returned to the mud, I inspected the two halves of the worm and was astonished to find that they were still moving. I quickly picked up the worms and a little extra dirt and put them into my jeans pocket. A few minutes before lunch, I tiptoed to the bin that held the class’s lunch boxes, looking for the one that belonged to the Worm Ripper, the boy who had torn the worm cruelly. Fortunately for me, I recognized it immediately. I looked behind me to be sure no one saw me before slipping the worm pieces inside the plastic baggie that held his apple slices. I held my breath as the Worm Ripper pulled the apple slices from his lunchbox. When he noticed the worm, he let out a sharp cry, which brought the lunchroom supervisors to him. I should’ve felt triumphant(大获全胜的). Instead, my heart pounded in my chest. I knew what I had to do. I walked up to lunch supervisors and admitted, “It was me! I put the worm in his lunchbox.” The Worm Ripper glared in my direction. One supervisor rubbed his back to comfort him, while the other ordered me to go to the headmistress’s office. Headmistress Lehrer was a strict old woman. My best friend Ricky said she would look students in the eye, making them tell her everything bad they had ever done. Then they were punished by writing apologies until their hands fell off. I expected to at least receive a severe scolding(训斥). 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150 左右: 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 After I told her the truth, with a kind of strange smile on her lips, she went down on her knees. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The next day, not allowed to go out for break, I stared out and watched a boy by the mud pile picking up a worm. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: After I told her the truth, with a kind of strange smile on her lips, she went down on her knees. “When I was your age, I got mad at someone for hurting my friend. They apologized, and we became friends, too. I appreciate that you tried to stand up for the worm, but try to keep the creepy-crawlies(小爬虫)outside, okay?” said Lehrer. I nodded and turned to leave, thinking I had gotten off easily. I still had my writing hand, and I’d only had to admit one misdeed. “Wait! ”the headmistress called. I turned around. “You’ll be staying in for break for the next week.” The next day, not allowed to go out for break, I stared out and watched a boy by the mud pile pick up a worm. I fearfully thought what would happen to it since I couldn’t be outside to persuade him not to hurt it. He held it by both ends and looked like he was about to pull. Then someone ran across the playground to talk to him. It was the Worm Ripper. After their conversation, the boy gently placed the worm back in the mud. I smiled. Perhaps I had made a difference after all. 词汇激活 行类 ①道歉:apologize/make an apology ②.转身:turn around/turn back ③.抓住:catch/grab/grip 情绪类 ①.感谢:appreciate/show his gratitude/be grateful ②.笑着:smile/ burst into laughter/giggle 【点睛】[高分句型1]. B We are sitting at lunch when my friend casually mentions that she and her husband are thinking of “starting a family. ” What she means is that her biological clock has begun its countdown and she is considering the possibility of motherhood. “We’re taking a survey,’’ she says, half jokingly. “Do you think I should have a baby?” “It will change your life,’’ I say carefully. “I know,” she says, “No more sleeping in on Saturdays,no more relaxing vacations. ” But that is not what I mean at all I look at my friend, trying to decide what to tell her. My friend’s surprised look makes me realize that tears have formed in my eyes. “You’ll never regret it,” I say finally. 4. According to the author, what will happen to her friend once she has a child? A. She will never read a newspaper again. B. She will become less disciplined at work. C. Value. 6 What’s the author’s attitude towards her friend’s plan of having a baby? A. Objective. B. Supportive. C. Disapproving. D. Doubtful. 7. What is the best title for the text? A. The Worry of a Would-be Mother B. The Survey of Childbirth C. The Secret of a Successful Mother D. The Meaning of Motherhood C It has long been believed that the smart phones in our pockets are actually making us duller; but now there is evidence for it. D Two powerful NASA telescopes have detected the oldest and most distant black hole ever found. 12. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
