Four Best Beach Spots in South Carolina
Morris Island
What was once a war fort (堡垒) is now an island without residents in the Charleston Harbor marked by the state’s tallest lighthouse. Today, this island is only accessible by boat. While boat rentals are available, it is highly recommended that visitors book one of the tours that will take you to the island with a local expert who can tell you all about the area’s history and marine life.
Huntington Beach State Park
Located between Myrtle Beach and Georgetown, Huntington Beach State Park offers historic sites, fishing, hiking, guided walks, and, of course, a three-mile beach. There are over 300 species of birds here, making the park a wonderland for birders. Visitors can also spot deer, sea turtles, and more. Plus, camping is available at the park for those who want to spend more time enjoying its natural beauty.
Surfside Beach
Also known as “The Family Beach”, Surfside Beach’s focus on families goes beyond its nickname—it identified itself as the first autism-friendly (自闭症友好) travel destination in the world in January 2016. Visitors can approach the sandy beach from 36 different entry points, some of which provide wheel chair access. There are also mini-golf courses and plenty of restaurants to choose from.
Fripp Island
Head for this small region for kayaking, golfing, and breathtaking natural views. Watch some of the 175 species of birds that live along the ocean and salt marsh(沼泽), or other local animals such as alligators, dolphins, and loggerhead turtles. Book a place with a marsh view at Fripp Island Golf & Beach Resort to enjoy pools, on-site dining, and the busy activity center.

When Gary Leung completely lost his eyesight nearly 15 years ago, it almost destroyed him. The Hong Kong native fell into hopelessness. Just at that time, he found long-distance running.
Now in his 50s, Leung has since completed the 100-kilometer Antarctic Ice Marathon, becoming the first blind person to do so. He even attempted the 400 km “Ultra Gobi”, thought to be one of the most challenging foot-races in the world. Recently, he is fresh off a 2,300 km charity run in Japan.
The Japanese “Dark Run 2023” was divided into 40 days, meaning Leung and his guide runners—connected by a string attachment—ran an average of more than 50 km per day. The run was aimed at raising money for young people with serious illnesses and showing them that all people have obstacles (障碍), but we must face them head-on and with bravery.
Though Leung can’t physically see things in front of him, he says that doesn’t make him fearful of running long distances now. He thinks there’s no need to be scared for those who are lacking in something. The universe will equip them with other talents. And they are never alone, just like he wasn’t alone on this run. His guide runners gave up their own holidays and put their own money in to fly over and support him.
“I want to pass down the spirit. I’m not young anymore and won’t be able to run these distances much longer,” he says, smiling. “I want to help my younger friends with similar experiences to learn to love exercise. Doing physical activities is not as easy for them as it is for able-bodied people, so I want to set up a stage where we can continue to bring things to them—and for them to do the same for more.”
4. What does long-distance running mean for Leung?
A. A cure for his eyes. B. A tool for making a living.
C. A way out of life’s worst. D. A form of physical exercise.
5. How does Leung finish all his long-distance running?
A. He was guided while running. B. He managed it by himself.
C. He sought help from the organizers. D. He took advantage of public transport.
6. What can be inferred from Leung’s words in the last paragraph?
A He is ready to challenge longer running.
B. He is too tired to go on with charity work.
C. He wants young people to follow his example.
D. He thinks running is easy for the blind to take up.
7. Which words can best describe Leung?
A. Humorous and honest. B. Strong-willed and inspiring.
C. Responsible and outgoing. D. Independent and warm-hearted.
C 5. A 6. C 7. B

Wild fig trees may provide an inexpensive, effective way to monitor mercury (汞) pollution near small-scale gold mining sites throughout the Global South, a recent study suggests.
Published in Frontiers in Environmental Science, the analysis looked at whether fig trees can be used as a biomonitoring tool near small-scale gold mines. The mines, located largely in South America, Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, use liquid mercury to separate ore (矿石) and gold, unleashing high levels of mercury pollution. The polluted air generated by burning mercury-gold amalgams (合金) to get gold can endanger health in humans and animals. But the industry — largely unregulated — lacks reliable monitoring data, the researchers write.
The researchers introduced a fast-growing fig tree that thrives throughout the tropics. The trees grow annual rings, which is uncommon among tropical trees. The researchers analyzed tree cores from five study sites in Peru’s Madre de Dios region to determine whether fig trees could serve as natural indicators of mercury pollution levels in the area. Three of the sites were near small mines, and two were located far away.
Mercury levels in the trees’ rings were “strongly correlated” with atmospheric mercury levels, the researchers found, and trees nearest the mines had higher concentrations (浓度) of mercury in their rings. Passive air sampling confirmed the mercury measurements.
The study examined tree rings from 1941 to 1999 and 2000 to 2019. At two sites near modern mining towns where mercury-gold amalgams were burned, the team found lower mercury concentrations in tree rings during the earlier period, when mining in the area wasn’t well established, and higher levels after gold mining expanded.
Trees provide “a much more widely spread and cheaper network of biomonitoring” over decades than typical monitoring of small-scale mines, which focuses on short periods, the researchers write.
“This really offers a method that can be employed throughout the Global South to understand changes in mercury over time, as well as space indicators of mercury.” Jacqueline Gerson, a study author and assistant professor of biological and environmental engineering in Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, said in a news announcement.
8. What does the underlined word “unleashing” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Releasing. B. Detecting. C. Absorbing. D. Reducing.
9. Why are fig trees from different sites analyzed?
A. To figure out the effect of mercury pollution.
B. To test if they can monitor mercury pollution.
C. To study the exact cause of mercury pollution.
D. To see how they help reduce mercury pollution.
10. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Tree rings show lower mercury levels after mining expanded.
B. Typical mine monitoring covers broader areas than tree rings.
C. Mercury-gold amalgams were burned only from 2000 to 2019.
D. Tree rings offer a long-term and cheap way to monitor mercury.
11. What is Jacqueline Gerson’s attitude towards using fig trees to monitor mercury pollution?
A. Concerned. B. Approving. C. Objective. D. Uninterested.
A 9. B 10. D 11. B
根据第二段中划线词前“The mines, located largely in South America, Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, use liquid mercury to separate ore and gold, (这些矿场主要位于南美洲、东南亚和撒哈拉以南非洲,使用液态汞分离矿石和黄金)”及划线词后“high levels of mercury pollution. The polluted air generated by burning mercury-gold amalgams (合金) to get gold can endanger health in humans and animals.(高水平的汞污染。通过燃烧汞金合金提取黄金时产生的受污染空气,会危害人类和动物的健康)”可知,液态汞被用来分离矿石和黄金,从而释放出高水平的汞污染,故划线词unleashing与A选项Releasing“释放”意义相近。故选A。
根据第三段中“The researchers analyzed tree cores from five study sites in Peru’s Madre de Dios region to determine whether fig trees could serve as natural indicators of mercury pollution levels in the area.(研究人员分析了秘鲁马德雷德迪奥斯地区五个研究地点的树芯,以确定无花果树是否可以作为该地区汞污染水平的自然指标)”可知,研究人员分析来自不同地点的无花果树是为了测试它们是否可以监测汞污染。
根据第六段中“Trees provide “a much more widely spread and cheaper network of biomonitoring” over decades than typical monitoring of small-scale mines, which focuses on short periods, the researchers write.(研究人员写道,与典型的小型矿山监测相比,树木在几十年间提供了一个“分布更广、更便宜的生物监测网络”,而典型的小型矿山监测则侧重于短期)”可知,树轮提供了一种长期且廉价的监测汞污染的方法。
根据最后一段中“This really offers a method that can be employed throughout the Global South to understand changes in mercury over time, as well as space indicators of mercury.(这确实提供了一种可以在全球南方各地采用的方法,以了解汞随时间的变化,以及汞的空间指标)”可知,Jacqueline Gerson认为这种方法可以在全球南方各地采用,以了解汞随时间的变化以及汞的空间指标。

Over breakfast this morning, after I enjoyed a short chat with Mia, my new Spanish study buddy (伙伴), I felt that I had mastered more than what I gained from textbook exercises. Mia, however, is an AI that I created to take advantage of a phenomenon called the “protege effect.” According to several studies, we learn more effectively when we teach someone else about the topic we’ve just explored — even if that person doesn’t really exist.
Learning through teaching was relatively slow to gain popularity until a group of scientists in the United States began to test its effectiveness. In one of the first experiments, Catherine Chase and colleagues tested on 62 eighth-graders who were tasked with using a computer program to study the biological (生物学的) changes that occur when we get a fever.
Over two lessons, they had to read a text and then create a mind-map explaining the different processes and the relationships between them. For half the teens, the mind-map presented the result of self-study. The others were told that their mind-map would help to teach a virtual character.
It was not a big difference, but the students in the role of teacher scored significantly better. This increased participation had a big influence: both the amount they got and the depth of their understanding. At the end of the two classes, participants who had played the role of teacher had kept much more of the material, with much stronger performance on test questions.
Chase’s team named this the “protege effect” and it has since been studied many times. These later studies suggest that learning by teaching is more powerful than other mnemonic (助记符号) techniques like self-testing. If we know that others are going to learn from us, we feel a sense of responsibility to provide the right information, so we make a greater effort to fill in the gaps in our understanding and correct any mistaken thoughts. Sharing our knowledge then helps to strengthen what we have learned. Why not try to apply the protege effect into practice?
12. Why does the author mention Mia in paragraph 1?
A. To stress the importance of AI.
B. To share a story of a study buddy.
C. To introduce a phenomenon about study.
D. To show how to finish textbook exercises.
13. What was different about the two groups in the experiment?
A. They differ in learning time. B. They differ in learning tools.
C. They differ in learning materials. D. They differ in learning strategies.
14. Why does the “protege effect” help learning?
A. Because AI teachers explain things clearly.
B. Because mind-maps make memorizing easier.
C. Because teaching inspires deeper understanding.
D. Because testing yourself is the best way to learn.
15. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. Learning by Teaching Helps B. Textbook Exercises Benefit More
C. Mind-mapping Improves Memory D. AI Promotes Language Learning
C 13. D 14. C 15. A

根据第一段中“Over breakfast this morning, after I enjoyed a short chat with Mia, my new Spanish study buddy (伙伴), I felt that I had mastered more than what I gained from textbook exercises. Mia, however, is an AI that I created to take advantage of a phenomenon called the “protege effect.” (今天早晨吃早餐时,我和新结识的西班牙语学习伙伴Mia简短交谈后,感觉自己掌握的知识已经超越了课本练习所得。不过,Mia其实是我为了利用“门徒效应”这个现象而创造的人工智能)”可知,作者先提到自己虚构的人工智能学习伙伴Mia,后面自然过渡到对“门徒效应”的讨论。由此可知,作者提到Mia是为了引出关于学习的一个现象。故选C项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“For half the teens, the mind-map presented the result of self-study. The others were told that their mind-map would help to teach a virtual character. (半数学生的思维导图作为自主学习成果呈现,而其余学生则被告知其制作的思维导图将用于指导虚拟角色学习)”可知,两组的差异在于学习策略不同。故选D项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“If we know that others are going to learn from us, we feel a sense of responsibility to provide the right information, so we make a greater effort to fill in the gaps in our understanding and correct any mistaken thoughts. (当我们意识到他人将受教于己时,会产生确保信息准确的责任感,从而更主动地填补认知空白并修正错误观点)”可知,“门徒效应”有助于学习。是因为教学行为激发了更深层次的理解。故选C项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“According to several studies, we learn more effectively when we teach someone else about the topic we’ve just explored — even if that person doesn’t really exist. (多项研究表明,当我们向他人讲解刚学过的知识时——即便对方并非真实存在——学习效果会显著提升)”可知,文章围绕“通过教学促进学习”,即“门徒效应”展开,用科学实验论证了其合理性,表明教学行为能激发更深的理解。因此,A项“以教促学”概括了这一现象,最适合作为文章标题。故选A项。
My neighbor has a beautiful lawn. He hates to see even one weed in it. I understand his feelings but I accept a little more of a natural look. Every year the spring rains cause weeds to appear everywhere, especially in the lawn. ____16____ There is one weed killer for killing weeds in paths, another for killing weeds in flower beds, another for killing grass in flower beds and yet another for killing weeds in grass.
One day when I got home from work, he was killing the dandelions (蒲公英) growing at the side of my house. “I’m sure that you will be happy with me killing these weeds for you,” he said.
Knowing he meant well, I thanked him. ____17____ I happen to like dandelions. For me, even in something as simple as a dandelion, there is art. In fact, there is even poetry in a dandelion!
____18____ They certainly do grow where nothing else does, like along the side of my house. The flowers are a pretty bright yellow. They form their own picture of golden color around my washing line, something like a crazy artwork.
The flowers also add fine flavor and color when dropped in ice water. ____19____ They also add vitamins. I’ve been told that the leaves and roots contain vitamins A, B and C as well as minerals such as iron and calcium. It does not taste that great, but it certainly is good for you.
Actually, dandelions are common and delicate, so we label them weeds and kill them. But I say that they are works of art, carefully made by nature’s magical hand. As the season progresses, the flower turns into puffy seeds that can float in the wind. If you blow the round head of seeds gently but firmly, the seeds fly away, forming a kind of art on the move.
So in the dandelion are both art and poetry. ____20____
A. However, deep inside, I felt saddened.
B. They can make food not only tasty but nutritious.
C. Dandelions can be used for many different purposes.
D. He then starts to mix up all his different poisons in his garage.
E. Do you know that the leaves can be used in a salad to make it tastier?
F. But to be honest, I didn’t want dandelions to grow freely in my garden.
G. Let nature’s art and beauty never stop to fill you with joy and amazement.
D 17. A 18. C 19. E 20. G

由上文“Every year, the spring rains cause weeds to appear everywhere, especially in the lawn.(每年春雨都会导致杂草丛生,尤其是草坪上。)” He then starts to mix up all his different poisons in his garage.(然后他开始在车库里混合各种不同的除草剂。)中then承接春雨导致杂草生长的前提,“mix up all his different poisons”对应后文“one weed killer...another for...”的分类除草剂,具体描述邻居对杂草的“极端处理”,与“hates to see even one weed”的性格形成呼应。故选D项。
由上文“Knowing he meant well, I thanked him.(我知道他好意,便谢了他。)”及下文“I happen to like dandelions.(我偏偏喜欢蒲公英。)” A项However, deep inside, I felt saddened.(然而,内心深处我感到难过。) 故选A项。
由下文“They certainly do grow where nothing else does, like along the side of my house. The flowers are a pretty bright yellow. They form their own picture of golden color around my washing line, something like a crazy artwork.(它们确实在其他地方生长,比如我家旁边。这些花是很亮的黄色。他们在我的晾衣绳周围形成了自己的金色图案,就像一件疯狂的艺术品。)”可知,此处需总述蒲公英的特点。C项Dandelions can be used for many different purposes.(蒲公英有许多不同用途。)
由上文“The flowers also add fine flavor and color when dropped in ice water.(花朵放入冰水中也能增添风味和色泽。)”及下文“They also add vitamins.(它们还富含维生素。)” Do you know that the leaves can be used in a salad to make it tastier?(你知道叶子能用于沙拉使其更美味吗?)中“leaves can be used in a salad”呼应“flowers add flavor”,通过“叶子 — 花朵”的不同部位举例,延续“食用价值”的论述,tastier与flavor形成语义衔接,且设问句式增强互动性。故选E项。
由上文“So in the dandelion are both art and poetry.(因此蒲公英兼具艺术与诗意。)” Let nature’s art and beauty never stop to fill you with joy and amazement.(让自然的艺术与美丽永远带给你喜悦与惊叹。)中“nature’s art and beauty”指代蒲公英的“art and poetry”,“fill you with joy”呼吁珍视自然之美,与前文“works of art by nature’s hand”形成首尾呼应,将蒲公英的个体特质升华为对自然的欣赏。

I was raised in a music-centered home. I did well in classical music and saved my competitive nature for the stage, not in the athletic field. Everyone knew “Emily doesn’t do sports”. I chose the safety of the cheering roles, far removed from balls. Staying on the sidelines meant I was in control and would never injure myself to look like a fool.
That changed when our family moved to the capital of Turkey, Ankara. The activity of choice in my new community was tennis. If I wanted a social life, I would have to play the sport I had never tried before. I cheered myself on, telling myself that I enjoyed trying new things, and tennis skirts were pretty.
However, it was not just a concept (概念) but also learning to move my body in new and completely foreign ways. With arms, legs, hands and feet all speeding up in different directions, I would celebrate at the end of the each lesson when I hadn’t thrown out my back. My movements were awkward and childish, like a baby just learning to walk, struggling to put one foot in front of the other.
In the following weeks, I spent hours on the court, hitting ball after ball against the practice wall. Though I practiced hard, I didn’t make great progress. I still couldn’t control my body’s movements better. Being blamed for the wrong movement was my daily routine. Without expectation, what waited for me was the moments of frustration because the ball would go wildly off-course.
One day, an elderly man named Mr. Thompson, noticed my struggles. He approached me and offered some gentle advice. “It’s not just about the strength but the rhythm (节奏) and your confidence,” he said with a kind smile. His words were like a guiding light. Under his guidance, I started to focus on the paces of my movements. Gradually, I began to see improvements. The ball started to land where I intended it to more often.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
My improvement also led me to take part in a local tennis team.

Off the tennis court, my new hobby had an effect on my life.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
My improvement also led me to take part in a local tennis team. Stepping onto the competitive court for the first time was horrible. Other players looked so confident and skilled, which made me doubt my ability. But the gentle advice appeared in my mind suddenly and my unhealthy feelings disappeared. I focused on the game, every shot and every movement. I gave it my all and won the match in the end. I felt a sense of achievement wash over me, proving that I could face challenges head-on and achieve success.
Off the tennis court, my new hobby had an effect on my life. I became more outgoing and sociable and started to take part in tennis-related social events. I made friends from all walks of life and we bonded over our shared love for the sport. These new friendships broadened my way of seeing things and made me feel more connected to the community. Tennis has become more than just a sport for me. It’s a teacher, always reminding me of the importance of confidence, not giving up, and the joy of learning.

A. He is ready to challenge longer running.
B. He is too tired to go on with charity work.
C. He wants young people to follow his example.
D. He thinks running is easy for the blind to take up.
7. Which words can best describe Leung?
A Humorous and honest. B. Strong-willed and inspiring.
C. Responsible and outgoing. D. Independent and warm-hearted.

A Tree rings show lower mercury levels after mining expanded.
D
My neighbor has a beautiful lawn. He hates to see even one weed in it. I understand his feelings but I accept a little more of a natural look. Every year, the spring rains cause weeds to appear everywhere, especially in the lawn.
D He then starts to mix up all his different poisons in his garage.
E. Do you know that the leaves can be used in a salad to make it tastier?
F. But to be honest, I didn’t want dandelions to grow freely in my garden.
G. Let nature’s art and beauty never stop to fill you with joy and amazement.

One day an elderly man named Mr.
