One lazy afternoon in a bookstore, I found a book called The Last Days of Old Beijing by US writer Michael Meyer. The title caught my eye and made me think about my home city, Beijing, and its past.
Meyer’s writing takes us back to Beijing about 20 years ago. In 2005, Meyer moved into a
courtyard home in one of Beijing’s oldest neighbourhoods, Dashilan, on one of its hutongs. There
he taught English at a local school and became the only Westerner (西方人) there living among
local people. This gave him a chance to get close to the local culture. In the book, he talks about the hutong and the shouts of street vendors (摊贩) in a lively way that makes you feel like you’re right
there.
Meyer saw some of the great changes this neighbourhood went through. The old houses made way for high buildings, shopping malls and other symbols of modern life. However, some parts of
old Beijing’s culture stayed strong. People still kept traditions like putting up Spring Festival
couplets and artisans worked hard to pass down skills. Meyer shows us how these traditions helped people hold on to their roots as old buildings around them went away.
I was born in Beijing in the 2010s, so I know more about the city's modern side. Reading The Last Days of Old Beijing opened my eyes to new sides of the city. Those small details of daily life
in the old neighbourhoods touched my heart. It made me think about how we can keep our traditions alive while also moving forward with changes.
