When you get a less desirable gift. people like to say, “It’s the thought that counts.” But with my mother’s gifts, you’ve really got to wonder, “What thought was that exactly?”
My mother’s presents are never given to be mean; they are always presented with wide-eyed, innocent excitement. “Do you like it?” she always asks expectantly, and we nod our heads while we try to figure out what “it” is. Over the years, my mother’s Christmas presents have become well-known for the amusement — and sometimes horror — that they could cause.
For instance, my mother once gave me a pair of bright red underwear, the kind that you see little girls wearing under their fancy dresses in old-timey pictures. Several years ago, she spent days working on a handmade clay (泥土) sculpture:a lovingly crafted, odd interpretation of my head. I took the clay head home and placed it on my bathroom counter as instructed. I soon discovered that few things terrify my two-year-old child more than a small, strange-looking version of his mother’s head staring at him while he was sitting on the toilet.
Someone asked me what I hoped to get for this Christmas from my mother. “Oh nothing,” I explained. You don’t “hope” for gifts from her. They’re coming — whether you want them or not.
But the weird, clueless, endless and enthusiastic love that comes with my mother’s gifts is the same love with which she raised me, and it’s hers and hers alone. She has always loved me for my boring personality unconditionally, and I — with all my eyerolls and sighs by the Christmas tree — love her unconditionally as well. There’s no better gift to give a child than the knowledge that they can be weird or awkward and still feel unconditionally loved.
4. Why does the author ask the question in paragraph 1?
A. To express concern about the gifts. B. To point out her mother’s lack of taste.
C. To suggest her mom’s thoughtlessness. D. To stress the strange nature of the gifts.
5. Which of the following best describes the clay sculpture?
A. Lovely. B. Realistic. C. Unimaginative. D. Horrifying.
6. How does the author feel about her mothers gifts according to paragraph 4?
A. Hoping they will improve. B. Amused by their strangeness.
C. Accepting they’re unavoidable. D. Determined to prevent their arrival.
7. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Gift ideas for loved ones. B. Message from mother’s gifts.
C. Art of accepting unwanted gifts. D. Family traditions of giving gifts.
C
In business, there’s a speed gap: It’s the difference between how important a firm’s leaders say speed is to their competitive strategy and how fast the company actually moves. That gap is significant regardless of region, industry, company size, or strategic emphasis. Organizations fearful of losing their competitive advantage spend much time and many resources looking for ways to pick up the pace.
In our study of 343 businesses, the companies that chose to go, go, go to try to gain an edge ended up with lower sales and operating incomes than those that paused at key moments to make sure they were on the right track. What’s more, the firms that “slowed down to speed up” improved their top and bottom lines, averaging 40% higher sales and 52% higher operating incomes over a three-year period.
How did they disobey the laws of business physics, taking more time than competitors yet performing better? They thought differently about what “slower” and “faster” mean. Firms sometimes fail to understand the difference between operational speed (moving quickly) and strategic speed (reducing the time it takes to deliver value). Simply increasing the speed of production, for example, may be one way to try to reduce the speed difference. But that often leads to reduced value over time, in the form of lower-quality products and services.
In our study, higher-performing companies with strategic speed always made changes when necessary. They became more open to ideas and discussion. They encouraged new ways of thinking. And they allowed time to look back and learn. By contrast, performance suffered at firms that moved fast all the time, paid too much attention to improving efficiency, stuck to tested methods, didn’t develop team spirit among their employees, and had little time thinking about changes.
Strategic speed serves as a kind of leadership. Teams that regularly take time to get things right, rather than plough ahead full bore, are more successful in meeting their business goals. That kind of strategy must come from the top.
8. According to paragraph 1, what is the “speed gap” in business?
A Delay between decision and action.
B. Speed difference in companies of all sizes.
C. Speed gap across industries and company types.
D. Gap between leaders intentions and actual speed.
9. What does the underlined part “the laws of business physics” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Fewer hours better results. B. Less production, more value.
C. More time, better performance. D. Slower operation, higher quality.
10. What can we learn about successful companies in the study?
A. They focused on production speed. B. They competed through low prices.
C. They avoided making major changes. D. They took time to adjust when needed.
11. What could be the best title for the text?
A. Deliver Value? Plough Ahead B. Need Speed? Slow down
C. Improve Quality? Serve Better D. Reduce Time? Move Faster
D
Globalization means different things to different people. Some define it as the movement of people, language, ideas, and products around the world. Others consider it as the control of multinational companies and the destruction of cultural identities.
The world is turning into a little village, and we are all neighbors. The recent globalization is an irreversible (不可逆的) trend of which the so-called Americanization phenomenon seems to be more a consequence. Americanization is playing a major part in our daily lives. Going to any country in Asia nowadays, we are going to see many of the American coins now in currency everywhere.
People have been used to finding American products worldwide, but now it is also increasingly common to find Asian products in the US. In many big cities, we can have sushi and sashimi in Japanese restaurants, go to the cinema and enjoy the beautiful American-Chinese movie, and take home spring rolls from Chinese restaurants. Everywhere we can see people wearing various clothes labeled Made in South Area (China, Singapore, etc.). It is the exotic (异国的) flavor that makes our life colorful.
Many people, however, would like to curb the globalization process because e they think they are losing their own culture, but in fact, it is very difficult to stop this process. The only thing we can do is try to be critical and choose what is better for us to have or to buy.
However, many people think that young people are not free to choose when they are constantly exposed to attractive advertisements which are specially designed to capture the youth market. Peaceful protests could be arranged just to help people think about the situation, but the tendency in our world is to want globalization.
12. How is paragraph 3 manly developed?
A. By making classification. B. By providing examples.
C. By following space order. D. By presenting causes and effects.
13. What does the underlined word “curb” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Rush through. B. Follow up. C. Adapt to. D. Slow down.
14. According to the author, what is the correct attitude toward globalization?
A. Tolerant. B. Supportive. C. Cautious. D. Opposing.
15. What can we learn about globalization?
A. It lacks a universal definition.
B. It is a result of Americanization.
C. American dollars are a learning currency in Asia.
D. Asians in the U. S. seldom enjoy homemade dishes.
A recent report argues that parenting is harmful to people’s mental health, and proposes a series of solutions, including investments in child care and government paid family leave. ___16___. Yet the report is missing one important strategy that is within the control of every parent: a look in the mirror.
___17___. We’re biologically wired to prevent our children’s suffering and remove obstacles from their path. This urge has led to some pushy parenting style s like the “Helicopter Parent”, who flies in to rescue a child in crisis, and the “Snowplow Parent”, who flattens any obstacle in their child’s way.
A most important shift that parents can make is learning to replace our urge to fix problems with the patience to listen. ___18___. Listening, however, is about allowing emotions to exist without rushing to solve a problem. It communicates confidence in the child’s ability to cope with challenges, no matter how messy they might be. Learning any skill requires repeated missteps before mastery. Yet in today’s educational landscape, students can absorb an unconscious and unintended message that mistakes are permanent and have no value. Too many kids think that their parents want perfect school reports. ___19___.
Not wanting to own mistakes can be most visible when it comes to student discipline. When a teenager crosses boundaries in school, one part of a school’s response is disciplinary (惩戒的). It’s a way of providing feedback. ___20___ . But too often, they are more worried about their child’s college applications than having him internalize valuable lessons. When they seek to control outcomes for their kids, they are trading short term wins for long-term thriving.
A. There’s no question that parents desperately need more support.
B. Parents need to stand with the school to support their child’s growth.
C. Working in schools, I’ve watched thousands of parents overfunctioning.
D. In pursuit of that unattainable goal, they sacrifice opportunity for growth.
E. It’s about knowing when to step back and let children find their own way.
F. Most parents now believe that their children will not be better off than them.
G. A fix-it mindset is focused on quick solutions, at containing emotions or discomfort.

A Lovely. B. Realistic.
D 5. D 6. C 7. B

根据第三段中“Several years ago, she spent days working on a handmade clay (泥土) sculpture:a lovingly crafted, odd interpretation of my head. I took the clay head home and placed it on my bathroom counter as instructed. I soon discovered that few things terrify my two-year-old child more than a small, strange-looking version of his mother’s head staring at him while he was sitting on the toilet.

There’s no better gift to give a child than the knowledge that they can be weird or awkward and still feel unconditionally loved.
A. Delay between decision and action.
B. Speed difference in companies of all sizes.
C. Speed gap across industries and company types.
D. Gap between leaders intentions and actual speed.
9. What does the underlined part “the laws of business physics” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Fewer hours, better results.
Move Faster
D 9. A 10. D 11. B

根据第三段中“How did they disobey the laws of business physics, taking more time than competitors yet performing better?(他们是如何违背商业法则的,比竞争对手花更多时间却也能表现地更好吗?)” 故选A。
根据文章第四段的内容“In our study, higher-performing companies with strategic speed always made changes when necessary.(在我们的研究中,具有战略速度的高绩效公司总是在必要时做出改变。)”

Globalization means different things to different people. Some define it as the movement of people, language, ideas, and products around the world. Others consider it as the control of multinational companies and the destruction of cultural identities.

A 17. C 18. G 19. D 20. B

上文“A recent report argues that parenting is harmful to people’s mental health, and proposes a series of solutions, including investments in child care and government paid family leave. (最近的一份报告指出,养育子女对人们的心理健康有害,并提出了一系列解决方案,包括对儿童保育的投入以及政府提供的带薪育儿假。)”提到一份报告认为育儿对人们的心理健康有害,并提出了一系列解决方案。A选项“There’s no question that parents desperately need more support.(毫无疑问,父母们迫切需要更多的支持)”承接上文,指出父母们确实需要更多的支持来解决育儿带来的压力和问题,同时与下文“Yet the report is missing one important strategy that is within the control of every parent: a look in the mirror.(然而,这份报告却遗漏了一个每个家长都能做到的重要策略:那就是好好审视一下自己。)” 故选A。
下文提到“ We’re biologically wired to prevent our children’s suffering and remove obstacles from their path.(我们天生就有防止孩子受苦、为他们清除障碍的本能)”,并举例说明了两种过度保护的育儿方式。
上文“A most important shift that parents can make is learning to replace our urge to fix problems with the patience to listen.
上文提到“Too many kids think that their parents want perfect school reports. (太多的孩子认为他们的父母想要完美的成绩单)”,此空需要承接上文,进一步说明这种观念对孩子的影响。D选项“In pursuit of that unattainable goal, they sacrifice opportunity for growth.(在追求那个无法达到的目标时,他们牺牲了成长的机会)”符合这一需求,既承接了上文提到的父母对孩子成绩的期望,也指出了这种期望对孩子成长的不利影响。故选D。
【20题详解】
上文“When a teenager crosses boundaries in school, one part of a school’s response is disciplinary (惩戒的). It’s a way of providing feedback.(当青少年在校园内触犯校规时,学校采取的应对措施之一便是进行惩戒。这是一种提供反馈的方式。)”提到学校对违纪学生的惩戒是一种提供反馈的方式,此空需要承接上文,进一步说明家长在面对孩子惩戒时的态度。B选项“Parents need to stand with the school to support their child’s growth.(家长需要与学校站在一起,支持孩子的成长)”符合这一需求,既承接了上文提到的学校惩戒,也指出了家长应该与学校合作,共同支持孩子的成长。

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When Jackson announced that he wanted us to join the choir, I couldn't wait to seize the opportunity. It was the first time I had studied under someone with dark skin like mine. Jackson was already in his sixties at that time, yet he was still full of energy and radiated confidence. On the first day, he rushed into the classroom like a train with a failed brake. His voice was loud and deep. Once excited, his hands would wave in the air.
... He demonstrated great enthusiasm, firm confidence and superb musical talent in class and generously shared these with us who met him by chance.
时”用when引导时间状语从句,“宣布”是announce,这里用过去式announced;“想要某人做某事”是want sb. to do sth.;“合唱团”是choir;“迫不及待做某事”固定表达为couldn't wait to do sth.,“抓住机会”是seize the opportunity。 When Jackson announced that he wanted us to join the choir, I couldn't wait to seize the opportunity.
“这是某人第一次做某事”常见句型为“It was the first time (that) sb. had done sth.”,此处that可省略;“师从”表达为“study under”,这里用过去完成时had studied ;“有着深色皮肤”用“with dark skin” ,“像我的一样”即“like mine” 。 It was the first time I had studied under someone with dark skin like mine.
“六十多岁”表达为“in one's sixties” ,“那时”是“at that time” ,所以“Jackson那时已经六十多岁了”译为“Jackson was already in his sixties at that time” ;“精力充沛”常见表达为“be full of energy” ;“散发(某种特质)”用“radiate” ,“自信”是“confidence” ,“但”表转折用“yet” 。 Jackson was already in his sixties at that time, yet he was still full of energy and radiated confidence.
“第一天”表达为“On the first day” ,在句中作时间状语;“冲进”常见表达是“rush into” ;“仿佛”用“like” ;“刹车失灵”可理解为“有失灵刹车的”,“失灵的”用“failed” ,“刹车”是“brake” ,所以“一辆刹车失灵的火车”为“a train with a failed brake” 。 On the first day, he rushed into the classroom like a train with a failed brake.
“嗓门很大,声音低沉” ,直接表述为 “His voice was loud and deep”,用一般过去时描述过去的状态。“一旦激动起来” ,完整表述为 “Once he was excited” ,在状语从句中,当从句主语和主句主语一致,且从句谓语含有 be 动词时,可省略从句的主语和 be 动词,即 “Once excited” ;“在空中挥舞” 表达为 “wave in the air” ,这里 “would + 动词原形” 表过去习惯性动作,故译为His voice was loud and deep. Once excited, his hands would wave in the air.
分享” 用 “share...with...” ;“不期而遇” 表达为 “by chance” ,这里 “who met him by chance” 是定语从句修饰 “us” ,描述过去发生的事用一般过去时,故译为He demonstrated great enthusiasm, firm confidence and superb musical talent in class and generously shared these with us who met him by chance.

Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Eric,
I really like the idea of adding a new column to our English newspaper. I would choose “Music and me”.
Music is a universal language that connects people. Many students enjoy listening to or playing music, and sharing personal stories about music can make the newspaper more lively and personal. “British history and traditions” is also interesting, but it might feel a bit distant for some students. Music, however, is something we experience every day. It can inspire creativity and bring joy. I believe this topic will attract more readers and encourage them to share their own stories.
Looking forward to your decision!
Best wishes,
Li Hua
范文二
Dear Eric,
I really like the idea of adding a new column to our English newspaper. I choose “British History and Traditions” for some reasons.
First, learning about British history helps us understand the world better. By studying important events and famous people, we can see how Britain influenced global culture and science. Second, traditions like afternoon tea or royal ceremonies are both educational and interesting. Understanding these customs allows us to connect with British friends and appreciate cultural differences. We could even compare them with Chinese traditions in future articles!
While music is fun, history offers lasting knowledge that improves our reading skills and broadens our horizons. This column will inspire students to explore beyond textbooks.
Thank you for considering my opinion!
Best wishes,
Li Hua
