When Katie Pappert thinks about happier times, she remembers her son Luke as a very happy 6-year-old kid who loved anything outside, fishing, snakes, etc. He was pretty active.
On September 12, 2020, while in the Adirondacks, Luke and his family’s lives were turned upside down. The family were up there for the weekend. Luke was fishing when he was struck by a drunken driver. Luke was on a boat with his father, grandfather, a friend and that friend’s father when they were struck. Unfortunately, the accident killed Luke’s grandfather and injured all aboard. Luke ended up with a traumatic-brain injury, a brain injury and broke his leg in four places. The accident left Luke wheelchair-bound and unable to speak.
One Saturday, the community gathered around the Papperts, holding a tent sale with the proceeds going to help with Luke’s treatment. Some who gathered never knew Luke or any of the Papperts, but said supporting events like this is all about the community. Shelly Graham from Hamlin expressed her pride in attending the sale. “My husband might not be thrilled because I’m buying more and more and having to make multiple trips, but I'm happy to be here and support a good cause,” she told the journalist.
The Papperts would love to raise enough money to be able to continue brain stimulating treatments and buy a new wheelchair that would allow Luke to be in the outdoors he loved so much. At the sale, the Papperts wore T-shirts that read “Fighting for Luke.” Katie said fighting is what Luke has been doing all this time.
“Small decisions can impact a family for a lifetime,” she said. “Luke is doing things that he wasn’t supposed to do. He keeps getting better and we’re going to keep fighting for him.”
4. What made Luke’s family get into trouble?
A. A serious crash. B. His poor quality boat.
C. A drowning experience. D. His grandfather’s death.
5. What does the underlined word “proceeds” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Purpose. B. Money. C. Mercy. D. Capacity.
6. What do we know about Shelly Graham?
A. She resists trips with tents.
B. She knows the Papperts very well.
C. She makes a purchase to support Luke.
D. She takes pride in organizing the tent sale.
7. What do the Papperts expect of Luke’s future life?
A. He will fight for his community.
B. He will make himself known to all.
C. He will struggle for the rest of his life.
D. He will receive further brain treatments.

A crack team of university students is just a month away from launching the first privately-made lunar rover (探月车) onto the moon’s surface.
Planned for May 4th, the rover weighs just two kilograms, and the mission objectives include showing its technology and shooting scientifically-relevant images. Called Iris, the rover designed at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU)’s Pittsburgh campus will be carried to the moon aboard a United Launch Alliance “Vulcan Centaur” rocket, alongside a multi-purpose device.
Back at the control center, students on the project will work in teams and in shifts to send action commands, and monitor the rover’s health and progress as it carries out a 60-hour mission. “Hundreds of students have poured thousands of hours into Iris. We’ve worked for years toward this mission, and to have a launch date on the calendar is an exciting step. Iris will open up lunar and space exploration by proving that a tiny, lightweight rover built by students can succeed on the moon,” said Raewyn Duvall, commander of the Iris mission.
This move will start to inspire a number of firsts for the rest of the world. Duvall’s team will be the first civilian team to put rovers on the moon. More importantly, it will be the smallest and the lightest rover ever launched. Onboard the rocket, another privately-made space machine, the Peregrine lander, will bring Iris down onto the lunar surface. Peregrine was made by private space company Astrobiotic, and will serve as a delivery platform for astronauts working on the lunar surface in the next 20 years.
In preparation for the May 4th launch, the team at CMU has conducted dozens of training simulations (模拟) to ensure they can handle potential issues that may arise across its primary mission and accompanied extended mission phases.
8. Which is one of the purposes of launching Iris?
A. To take images for amusement.
B. To show the team’s technology.
C. To charge a multi-purpose device.
D. To work out an appropriate weight.
9. What can be inferred about Iris from Raewyn Duvall’s words?
A. The students put great effort into it.
B. It will carry a multi-purpose payload.
C. Its launch means little to further exploration.
D. Its mission is bound to succeed on the moon.
10. What do Iris and Peregrine have in common?
A. They are privately-made space machines.
B. They are delivery platforms for astronauts.
C. They are the smallest and lightest machines.
D. They can handle potential issues themselves.
11. Why did the team at CMU conduct the training simulations repeatedly?
A. To train themselves for future missions.
B. To ensure the success of the 60-hour mission.
C. To analyze potential issues during the training.
D. To test the functionality of the launching equipment.

Janet Thibault deliberately walks where people are not allowed, a sandy, shapeless island in the Charleston Harbor covered with tiny toe tracks. The wildlife biologist is keeping a close eye on the secret lives of seabirds and shorebirds.
Thibault works for the Department of Natural Resources which owns the island and closes it for summer so birds can safely nest away from predators and people. It’s a critical time for the seabird reserve known as Crab Bank.
In 2017, Hurricane Irma wiped out what was left of the ruined land which had served as a nesting ground for seabirds and shorebirds for more than a half century. Thousands of birds were suddenly left without a place to nest or rest during long migrations until last summer when the newly restored island closed again for them between March and October. At present, the birds are still finding their way back.
She spots a nest decorated with shells and twigs. The adult parents who built it have slyly walked away to try to distract visitors. “They’re just trying to raise a family,” says Thibault. She is pleased by what she sees. She hopes this season, Crab Bank will surpass the more than 500 nests she helped track last summer. Although before the hurricane, the island saw ten times as many. Thibault worries about the future of ocean birds. “Their life depends on sand,” she says.
Coastal Expeditions owner Chris Crowley was part of the fight to save Crab Bank after it literally went under. His company provides tours and wildlife education. He fears birds are being squeezed out, not only by pollution and development, but by climate change. Coastal squeeze is the idea that as the water continues to rise, the birds have nowhere to go. At the same time, the Army Corp of Engineers is working on a project. Its project manager Jeff Livasy says they have set a goal to put sand on the reserve for creatures that need it.
Crowley watches nesting on Crab Bank from his boat. He’s delighted by colonies of black skimmers flying by with their nasally call. Birds, Crowley says, not only need our help, but they deserve it.
12. Why does Thibault walk on the ruined island?
A. To study the seabirds’ habitats.
B. To tackle the environmental issues.
C. To appreciate the unique scenery.
D. To research the lives of birds on the island.
13. What did Hurricane Irma cause for the seabirds and shorebirds on the island?
A. The loss of their nesting ground.
B. An interruption to their migration.
C. A sudden panic over escaping from it.
D. The discontinuation of their food supply.
14. What does Thibault see on the island?
A. Nesting materials are eco-friendly.
B. The number of nests is decreasing.
C. Crab Bank gradually comes to life.
D. The adult birds flee from Crab Bank.
15. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. Lack of sand on the reserve.
B. Impacts of pollution on the reserve.
C. Threats to the creatures on the reserve.
D. The joint efforts to rebuild the reserve.

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Andrea Lessing is a relatively new employee at Goodwill. Her job is sorting donated stuff. She has been working the job for about a month and a half and is already not surprised by some of the stuff she found.
People donate all kinds of things to Goodwill, and sometimes don’t always remember to empty out their pockets or purses before handing them over. It turns out that they can sometimes accidentally “donate” their cash too.
While going through a couple of sweaters, Andrea felt something extra heavy. At first, she thought that it was a pile of books, but then realized it was something more valuable. Wrapped inside the sweaters, she found piles of envelopes filled with $100 bills. All counted up, the money was worth $42,000. And no, the money wasn’t fake either. It was completely real!
Andrea, who’s also a mom, decided to do the right thing and report what she found. Thanks to identifying documents also left with the sweaters, the employees were able to trace the money back to its owner.
Normally, most people donate to Goodwill without leaving their identities. Or they at least try to keep their personal identifying information away from the clothing they donate. But in this instance, along with the forgotten money, the person who donated the sweater also forgot some documents that included their name.
For Andrea, returning the money was a no-brainer. She wants to try her best to put out positive energy. She also says that she was motivated by doing right for her daughter and being the best mom she can be.
Andrea explained, “ I have a daughter. I love her very much, and you can’t put a price on my daughter, and I know what could be risked if stealing that money. I do believe that if you do something good, it will come back to you. ”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
But Andrea was still rewarded for doing the right thing.

B. To show the team’s technology.
C. To charge a multi-purpose device.
D. To work out an appropriate weight.
9. What can be inferred about Iris from Raewyn Duvall’s words?
A. The students put great effort into it.
B. It will carry a multi-purpose payload.
C Its launch means little to further exploration.

B An interruption to their migration.

How to increase your levels of optimism
The way in which you achieve your goals, face challenges, and overcome failures depends largely on your levels of optimism. Not everyone sees life in the same way. ___16___
Change your negative thoughts. Your mind takes in negative memories and makes them bigger and more significant than they really are. First you should figure out what matters in your life and focus on positive messages. The next step is to reduce them by comparing them to related or similar memories that are more pleasant. ___17___ This requires a learning process that'll take some time to practice. However, with patience, you’ll achieve the desired results.
___18___ When you face a challenge, it’s advisable to figure out what’s going well. By taking the time to do this, you allow yourself to register the positive aspects that you experience. To help your brain store these positive events, you should take time each week to analyze what you should be grateful for. Then let your loved ones know that you love them and you’re grateful to them.
Repeat positive affirmations (肯定). One key element for increasing your levels of optimism that you get with previous two steps is positive affirmations. In fact, these messages that you repeat to yourself most regularly are the ones that you believe in and that determine your vision of life. ___19___ You can start with one or two affirmations that represent the values you want to live by and the goals you want to achieve. For example, tell yourself “Every day I’m improving” or “I'm living my best moment”. The repetition of phrases similar to these will allow your mind to interpret negative events differently. ___20___ And you’ll maintain your optimism.

第二节 (满分25分)

1.续写词数应为150左右;

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
But Andrea was still rewarded for doing the right thing. After returning the money, the owner, who was so touched, decided to give Andrea $1,000 for her honesty and kindness as a reward for tracking them down. He posted a photo of Andrea returning the money on his Facebook account and sang high praise for what Andrea had done. He said that without her effort, he would have been in great trouble. It was good to see such an unselfish thing really happened.
As Andrea was given that reward money, her boss also brought good news to her. He firstly expressed his appreciation for the honor she had brought to Goodwill. He said, “ Thank you for what you’re doing and you’re honest and you’re really living our values. ” More than that, he has decided to call on the company to learn from her. What’s even better is that he has decided to raise her pay. As the saying goes, “ One good turn deserves another ” . So we can see that honesty and kindness bring good luck.
