One night, I received a message from my former classmate, someone I hadn’t spoken to in 15 years. “Hey Mary,” she said. “I know you’ve always been an animal lover. I have a mini pig that is not getting along with my dogs. So I can’t keep the pig.” Of course, the whole situation was strange, but I’ve always been a trusting person. I replied “Let me do some research and I’ll get back to you.”
I knew nothing about mini pigs. I didn’t know what they ate; and I had no idea how big they got. Once I started doing some Internet research, I found a few people claiming that “there’s no such thing as a mini pig,” but I was blinded by my sudden obsession and my faith in my onetime friend. She had said the pig was six months old and this mini pig would grow to be about 70 pounds, maximum. That was pretty close to the size of Shelby, one of my dogs. So I told my former classmate that I’d take the animal.
It’s intractable enough bringing a pig back to the house I share with two dogs, two cats and my husband, Derek. But I knew I wanted the pig and the day finally came. When Derek went back, he stood in the door way like a statue. Every emotion other than happiness flashed across his face. He was extremely angry. The only positive thing I could say was, “She’s a mini pig! She’ll stay small!” Surprisingly, soon enough, the lovely pig smoothed things over by itself. Derek started talking about where the pig’s litter would go. You don’t care about “litter” of someone you’re getting rid of.
However a few months later, she’d started closing in on 80 pounds. It was becoming clear that I’d probably adopted a commercial pig and she was going to be enormous. While it might be unexpected, it’s more than worth it for the happiness she has added to our world.
4. What does the underlined word “intractable” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Easy. B. Interesting. C. Tricky. D. Urgent.
5. Why did Derek ask about the pig’s litter?
A. He already accepted the pig. B. He disliked everything about the pig.
C. He planned to get rid of the pig. D. He wanted his wife to be responsible for it
6 What do we know about the pig?
A. It will maintain its mini size. B. It will grow bigger than a dog.
C. It won’t grow more than 80 pounds. D. Its minimum wright is about 70 pounds.
7. How does the author feel about the pig after a few months?
A. Regretful. B. Disappointed. C. Content. D. Annoyed.

The Bay Area is among the most diverse places in the country, a wonderful place filled with people of every background. Each of them brings something different to the mix, and takes it from their own experience. Their stories are the focus of Status Update, an exhibition of 14 projects offered by Rian Dundon and former WIRED contributor Pete Brook. The show at SOM Arts uses personal experience to show the Bay Area’s culture.
The Bay Area is a microcosm of the national melting pot, a place where people of color comprise 58 percent of the overall population and are a majority in four of the region’s five counties. San Francisco in particular is the type of place where you can’t walk down the street without hearing another language. Yet the change is not all for the better. The gap between rich and poor is widening at a frightening speed, and San Francisco is becoming less diverse as minorities escape the city for more affordable communities elsewhere in the region.
Status Update reflects these changes and the challenges they bring. Joseph Rodriguez’s Faces of Foreclosure features quiet images of people like Ethel Gist, a 68-year-old woman who lost her home in the East Bay suburb of Brentwood six years ago. Photographer Sam Wolson records Oakland resident Shannon Fulcher and his efforts to provide for his daughter. And Laura Morton documents millennials hoping to make their way to the top in Silicon Valley in her series Wild West Tech. The mix of mediums, styles and subject matter within the exhibit stresses the region’s great diversity of experiences and how they shape each other.
Status Update starts a conversation about how the Bay Area is changing, and what people can do to build up a more just society. “I hope more humility (谦逊) and respect for our neighbors and communities and the ways we depend on one another,” Dundon says. “We’re all out here together.”
8. What are the artworks in Status Update mainly about?
A. The friendliness of the people in the Bay Area.
B. Beautiful constructions of the Bay Area.
C. Real people’s lives in the Bay Area.
D. The technological development of the Bay Area.
9. What is happening in San Francisco?
A. It is getting harder and harder for minorities to make a living.
B. The population in the region has been increasing in recent years.
C. The region is facing a rapid economic slowdown.
D. More and more local people tend to speak the same language.
10. What does Dundon expect of visitors?
A. They can know more about themselves.
B They can respect the people around them in daily life.
C. They can open their heart to other people.
D. They can develop an interest in diverse cultures.
11. Which of the following may be the most suitable title for the passage?
A. The Bay Area’s Past, Present and Future
B. The Successful Experiences in the Bay Area
C. An Exhibition About the Long and Rich History of the Bay Area
D. An Exhibition About the Bay Area’s Diversity and Rapid Change
D
When Israel’s Beresheet spacecraft launched toward the moon last week, it was carrying a time capsule. The little lunar probe carries a 30-million-page archive of human knowledge etched into a DVD-size metal disc.
The Lunar Library, as the archive is known, is considered a “civilization backup” to help ensure that our future generations never lose humanity’s collective wisdom, according to Spivack, co-founder of Arch Mission Foundation.
“A major challenge that we face is forgetting past mistakes and not having ways to stop them from happening again,” Spivack said. “For the survival of our species, we need to ensure it is shared with the people of the future.”
One small part of the archive is a collection of songs, children’s drawings and writings about Israeli culture and history. But the rest is truly encyclopedic. Included in the Lunar Library are Wikipedia, fiction and nonfiction books, textbooks and so on. All of that information is etched onto 25 disks.
All of that content will mean nothing if the physical object doesn’t survive, so the Arch Foundation helped develop a super-durable data-recording technology called Nanofiche for the Lunar Library disc. “It can stand up well to sustained heat that is 10 times greater than what is experienced on the moon with no damage to the data,” Spivack said of the disc, which is made of nickel (镍) because of its extreme durability and modest cost.
“We want the archive to last longer than the moon itself,” Spivack said. “If we place enough copies in enough places, some will make it into the distant future, no matter what happens on Earth, the moon, Mars or any other location.”
12. Why is the Lunar Library launched?
A. To display scientific progress. B. To preserve human civilization.
C. To record humans’ past mistakes. D. To encourage reading on the moon.
13. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A. The Lunar Library disc. B. Nanofiche.
C. The Arch Foundation. D. Nickel.
14. What can we learn about the DVD-size disc from the text?
A. It stores an archive of human knowledge.
B. It mainly covers Israeli culture and history.
C. It is made of expensive but lasting materials
D. It resists heat 10 times greater than it does on the earth.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. A DVD-size Disc to Survive Longer B. Israel’s Beresheet Spacecraft Won World Praise
C. More Lunar Libraries Set up on the Moon D. 30-million Page Library Heading to the Moon

However, a few months later, she’d started closing in on 80 pounds.
D. He wanted his wife to be responsible for it
6. What do we know about the pig?
A. It will maintain its mini size. B. It will grow bigger than a dog.
C. It won’t grow more than 80 pounds. D. Its minimum wright is about 70 pounds.
7. How does the author feel about the pig after a few months?
A. Regretful. B. Disappointed. C. Content. D. Annoyed.
【答案】4. C 5. A 6. B 7. C

【4题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“It’s intractable enough bringing a pig back to the house I share with two dogs, two cats and my husband, Derek. But I knew I wanted the pig and the day finally came.(把一头猪带回我和两只狗、两只猫以及丈夫德里克同住的房子里,这件事已经够intractable了。但我知道我想要这头猪,这一天终于来了)”可知,家里已有多种宠物,再带猪回家是件麻烦事,由此可知,划线单词“intractable”意为“棘手的”,与Tricky同义。故选C项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Derek started talking about where the pig’s litter would go. You don’t care about “litter” of someone you’re getting rid of. (德里克开始讨论猪的窝要放在哪里。你不会在意你要扔掉的东西的“窝”)”可知,德里克开始关心猪的窝在哪里,说明他不再想赶走猪,已经接受了它。故选A项。

It was becoming clear that I’d probably adopted a commercial pig and she was going to be enormous.(然而,几个月后,它的体重开始接近80磅。很明显,我可能收养了一头商品猪,它将会变得很大)”可知,这头猪会比狗长得更大。故选B项。

The Bay Area is among the most diverse places in the country a wonderful place filled with people of every background.
B. They can respect the people around them in daily life.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11.

【答案】12. B 13. B 14. A 15. D
