Scientists in China have recently used a powerful tool called CRISPR to make tomatoes taste sweeter. CRISPR is a gene-editing technology that allows researchers to change specific parts of a plant’s DNA. In this case, the scientists increased the amount of natural sugars in tomatoes by about 30%, making them taste better without changing their size.
The researchers focused on two genes in the tomato plant that usually reduce sugar levels as the fruit ripens. By editing these genes, they were able to keep more glucose and fructose the sugars that make tomatoes sweet—inside the fruit. The results of their study were published in the scientific journal Nature.
This development is part of a larger effort to make vegetables more attractive to consumers. Other scientists are working on creating seedless blackberries that are less bitter. The idea is that if vegetables taste better, more people will want to eat them, leading to healthier diets.
The success with tomatoes could also help improve other fruits like apples and pears. By using similar gene-editing techniques, scientists hope to raise the taste and quality of various crops. However, it will take several years before these gene-edited tomatoes are available in supermarkets. They must go through strict safety approvals to ensure they are safe for consumption.
Gene editing is different from traditional genetic modification, which typically adds genes from other species. Gene editing makes precise changes within the plant’s own DNA. This method is considered more natural and may face fewer approval hurdles in some countries. Despite the potential benefits, there are still worries about gene-edited foods. Some people worry about the long-term effects on health and the environment. Others are concerned about labeling and the right to know what is in their food.
In conclusion, the use of CRISPR to create sweeter tomatoes represents a significant improvement in agricultural science. By improving the taste of vegetables, scientists hope to encourage healthier eating habits. However, it is important to ease public concerns and ensure that these new foods are safe and properly regulated before they become widely available.
4. Why do scientists use CRISPR on tomatoes?
A. To reduce glucose and fructose inside the fruit.
B. To make tomatoes resistant to sugar levels as the fruit ripens.
C. To develop new varieties of tomatoes to attract consumers.
D. To increase the fruit’s sweetness without changing its volume.
5. Why does the article mention other projects like seedless blackberries?
A. To show that CRISPR can also be used to create more vegetables.
B. To prove that improving the attraction of vegetables is a broader scientific goal.
C. To argue that less bitterness is the most attractive goal in gene-edited crops.
D. To compare CRISPR’s effects with those of traditional farming.
6. What does the underlined word “hurdles” in paragraph 5 most likely mean?
A. Challenges that could delay legal approval.
B. Tests that must be scientifically repeated.
C. Policies that guide international cooperation.
D. Instructions that are given to researchers in advance.
7. What can be inferred about the potential impact of gene-edited tomatoes on public health?
A. Their improved taste will change people’s unhealthy eating habits.
B. They are expected to solve public worries.
C. They may improve nutrition if accepted by the public.
D. They may become widely available around the world.

The US and China have agreed to lower tariff’s (关税) for the next 90 days in a major relaxation of the trade war between the world’s two largest economies. As part of an agreement in Geneva (日内瓦) over the weekend, the US will lower tariffs on Chinese goods to 30% from 145% and China will reduce taxes on US imports to 10% from 125%. The agreement temporarily avoids an economic break that could damage growth, raise inflation in the US and job losses in China.
Global stocks (股票) continued their rise after the announcement, with S&P 500 futures up 2.8%. The US dollar rose 0.7% against other major currencies (货币) while gold, a haven asset (避险资产), fell 2.3%.
“We want more balanced trade, and I think both sides are committed to achieving that,” Scott Bessent, US Treasury secretary, said at a briefing in Geneva on Monday. “Neither side wants a break.” China released the joint statement with the US at the same time. “This move meets the expectations of producers and consumers... matching the interests of both nations and the common global interest,” China’s ministry of commerce said.
Washington and Beijing have been in a worsening trade war since early April, when President Trump put additional tariffs on Chinese imports, drawing hit-back measures from Beijing. The punishing tariffs have damaged trade between the countries. Last month, Bessent even admitted the situation was unsustainable.
Though the agreement marks just the first step towards reaching a more permanent deal, it represents the first sign of tensions easing between the two economic superpowers. Tai Hui, Apac chief market strategist at JPMorgan Asset Management, said the tariff cuts were “larger than expected”. “This reflects both sides seeing the economic reality that tariffs will hit global growth and dialogue is a better option.”
8. What is the most accurate description of the US-China agreement in Geneva?
A. A formal trade agreement that ends the trade war permanently.
B. A symbolic gesture with little actual economic effect on either country.
C. A significant but time-limited measure aimed at easing present tensions.
D. An economic strategy to isolate other global trading partners.
9. What was one market reaction to the announcement?
A. A drop of the Chinese currency due to reduced export competitiveness.
B. A rise in the stock markets and a drop in haven assets like gold.
C. An increase up to 2.8% in stock markets in expectation of the future.
D. A long-absent global increase in stock markets.
10. According to Tai Hui, what’s the importance of the tariff cuts?
A. They send a signal of political unity between the two countries.
B. The degree of the tariff cut is beyond expectation.
C. Both sides have accepted short-term losses for long-term benefits.
D. Both countries understand that talk is better than trade war.
11. Which one is the best title?
A. Agreements Between China and US. B. China-US Talks in Geneva.
C. China-US Temporary Tariff Cuts in Trade War. D. Global Trade Issues Between Nations.

If the idea of robots challenging humans in a road race makes you picture a nightmare where machines are taking over sports, then fear not, for now at least.
More than 20 two-legged robots competed in the world’s first humanoid (人形机器人) half-marathon in China on Saturday, and — though technologically impressive — they were far from beating their human masters over the long distance. Teams from several companies and universities took part in the race, a showcase of China’s advances on humanoid technology. And the chief of the winning team said their robot — though beaten by the humans in this particular race — was equal to similar models from the West.
Over the past few months, videos of China’s humanoid robots performing bike rides, roundhouse kicks and side flips have become popular on the Internet, with state media often promoting them as a key potential driver of economic growth. In a 2023 policy document, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology identified the humanoid robotics industry as a “new frontier in technological competition,” setting a 2025 target for mass production and secure supply chains for essential parts.
Fears have grown in recent years about how AI — and robots — may one day beat humans. And despite AI’s rapid rise in fields like security and employment, humans still lead in running — as proven by Saturday’s race. The robots competed against 12,000 human runners, running side by side with them in a fenced-off lane. Just as human runners needed to refill themselves with water, robot competitors were allowed to get new batteries during the race. Companies were also allowed to replace their robots with replacement when they could no longer compete, though each replacement came with a 10-minute delay.
The first robot across the finish line, Tiangong Ultra — created by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center — finished the route in two hours and 40 minutes. That’s nearly two hours short of the human world record of 56:42, held by Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo. The winner of the men’s race on Saturday finished in 1 hour and 2 minutes.
12. What is the author’s attitude toward robots racing against humans?
A. Cautious but optimistic. B. Worried but hopeful.
C. Sympathetic but impressed. D. Critical but confident.
13. According to the article, how did the government support the rise of humanoid robotics?
A. By combining robot training with national sports programs.
B. By replacing traditional marathons with robot races.
C. By funding university sports teams to partner with tech companies.
D. By highlighting humanoid robotics as a key area in policy.
14. Why could companies replace robots mid race, and what was the cost?
A. To reduce energy costs, with a total 10-minute delay.
B. To improve robot speed, but replacements cost 10 points.
C. To exchange broken robots, with a 10-minute delay per replacement.
D. To prevent system crashes, but replacements were banned.
15. How does the robot’s finishing time compare to humans’ in the race?
A. Faster than most runners but still far from professionals.
B. Close to the human winner showing remarkable progress.
C. Slight gap between robots and human runners.
D. Far behind human runners, with room for improvement.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a bright Saturday morning, the kind that invited adventure. My family gathered around the breakfast table to enjoy our meal. When my parents suggested taking a trip to the natural hot spring located halfway up a nearby mountain, my brother jumped up in excitement, imagining that it would be a thrilling adventure.
I, however, had a feeling that this would turn out to be an unpleasant experience, so I tried my best to talk everyone out of it. “Why not just relax at home?” I suggested. My dad insisted that the rest of the family was looking forward to it, and I was the only one who wasn’t on board. I had to agree to join them.
It was well after 10:00 am by the time we arrived at the foot of the mountain. We parked the car and set off down the path. Initially, the hike was enjoyable. Tall trees lined the path, and the air was alive with the sounds of birds singing.
However, we soon found ourselves on a rocky and steep dirt road. Each step was challenging, and I could feel the growing tension in my leg muscles. I struggled to catch my breath, and sweat dripped down my face. The cheerful songs of the birds faded into silence, replaced by the pounding of my heartbeat in my ears.
Suddenly, I tripped over a stone, barely managing to catch myself. I couldn’t hold back any longer. “This path is so uneven (不平坦的) !” I complained, my voice ring with anger. But my family seemed unaffected, their spirits high despite my outburst (爆发) of frustration. They encouraged me, “Just hold on!”
So we continued on our way, covering about eight miles before we finally reached the hot spring. My legs ached, and the wet clothes left me feeling quite uncomfortable. By the time we reached the hot spring, the anger inside me had reached its peak.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式作答。
I went straight to a tree and sat in the shade

The idea is that if vegetables taste better more people will want to eat them, leading to healthier diets.
C Policies that guide international cooperation.

【答案】12. A 13. D 14. C 15. D

第二节(满分25分)
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式作答。
I went straight to a tree and sat in the shade.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
I went straight to a tree and sat in the shade. My anger and frustration boiled within me, and I refused to look at my family. I felt like they didn’t understand how hard this hike had been for me. I crossed my arms and pouted, determined to stay in this sulky mood. But as I sat there, the gentle breeze began to soothe my heated emotions. I watched my brother splashing around in the shallow water near the hot spring, his laughter ringing through the air. Mom was smiling as she organized our things, and even Dad had a relaxed look on his face. Slowly, my anger started to melt away, replaced by a sense of curiosity about the hot spring.
While Mom was busy putting our stuff away, Dad walked over to me. He sat down beside me and said in a soft voice, “I know this wasn’t easy for you, but look how beautiful this place is. Sometimes, the journey might be tough, but the destination can be worth it.” I looked around at the lush greenery and the steam rising from the hot spring. He was right. I took a deep breath and stood up. “Let’s go enjoy the hot spring,” I said with a smile. Dad nodded, and we walked over to join the rest of the family, ready to make the most of this adventure.
