Last week, I visited my local bank to put a cheque into my account. While the procedure itself was relatively simple and user-friendly, I chose to double-check the details with the teller (出纳员) to ensure accuracy. The teller, apparently new to role, was unsure about the steps. He called his manager for assistance. The manager patiently explained everything to me, and I really appreciated what he did.
However, as the manager explained the steps, I couldn’t help but notice the teller’s lack of engagement. Instead of absorbing the guidance, he occupied himself with something else. What struck me most was the manager’s passive response to this behavior. Rather than encouraging the teller to focus on his instruction attentively, he simply completed the task himself and returned to his office.
On my way home, reflecting on the situation, I realized that the manager failed to use a preventive method. This might lead to the teller’s asking for help again in the future, causing the manager to repeatedly leave his desk to manage the same issues. This would definitely interrupt the manager’s routine work and waste his precious time, which could otherwise be better spent on his core duties. Obviously, if the root cause of the problem is not solved, such situation will happen more than once again, and it will potentially affect customer satisfaction.
This experience reveals a fundamental truth: It is a must to enable people to handle tasks independent of external assistance. We shouldn’t emphasize the significance of having a clear vision too much. It involves predicting future needs and making the right moves to solve them. Thus, we should begin with the end in mind, planning for long-term success. After all, sustainable success begins not with fixing today’s issues, but with preventing tomorrow’s.
24. Why did the teller turn to the manager for help?
A. He was busy with other affairs.
B. The procedure was too complex.
C. He had uncertainty as a new employee.
D. The matter was not in the charge of him.
25. What kind of help did the manager offer to the teller?
A. Absolute replacement. B. Passive response.
C. Professional guidance. D. Sincere encouragement.
26. What key strategy does the author recommend to solve such issues?
A. Making a further plan about regulation.
B. Emphasizing the importance of prevention.
C. Having a clear vision of personal development.
D. Cultivating independence through empowerment.
27. Which of the following proverbs best matches the main idea of the text?
A. Many hands make light work.
B. Nothing is difficult to the man who will try.
C. Hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
D. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

According to Dr. John Swaddle a professor at the Institute for Integrative Conservation at William & Mary, hundreds of millions of birds die every year from window collisions(碰撞).
However, if you put decals(贴花纸) or colorful stickers outside of your windows, the birds are more likely to see the barrier and therefore avoid it. Remember: never inside your window; always outside of your window.
“Double-glazed(双层的) windows reflect a lot of light, especially when you view them from a slight angle, as a flying bird would do,” Swaddle told Salon. He is the corresponding author of a recent study which tries to figure out how this basic reality of physics impacts on a bird’s experience as it flies near a standard window. For their experiment, researchers had birds perform repeated and controlled flight trials near windows with film(薄膜) products, BirdShades film and Haverkamp film, respectively.
“In our collision avoidance trials, BirdShades increased window avoidance by 47% and the Haverkamp increased avoidance by 39%. But neither product was effective when the films were applied to the internal surface of windows,” the authors concluded.
When breaking down the problem of avoiding window collisions from a bird’s point of view, Swaddle explained, “The light and reflected imagery from the external surface of the glass is sufficient to obscure a film or decal that is stuck to the inner surface from being seen clearly.”
If you want to protect birds from easily avoidable deaths without buying window film products, there are other solutions. Swaddle recommended “pleasing fritted glass that could be used in new construction and which is also bird-friendly”. Besides, he notes that screens can be helpful as well, not only by limiting reflectiveness but by providing birds with a cushion if they make impact. It is also possible to use everyday household objects to signal to birds that there are barriers — netting, bits of string, colorful stickers, and paint. These can all be used to this effect.
28. Which of the following can work to reduce bird window collisions?
A. Choosing double-glazed windows.
B. Avoiding opening windows at night.
C. Covering the inner windows with decals.
D. Sticking decals to the outer side of windows.
29. What did the researchers want to find in the experiment?
A. The bird-friendly film products and glass.
B. The efficient measures of collision avoidance.
C. The bird behaviors when hitting the bright window.
D. The link between light reflection and bird window collisions.
30. What does the underlined word “obscure” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Protect. B. Use. C. Shade. D. Find.
31. What is mainly talked about in the last paragraph?
A. Solutions to reducing the window cost.
B. Other ways to avoid bird collisions.
C. Bird-friendly objects to attract birds.
D. Environmentally friendly glass products.

When Zhou Longshan started filming birds 10 years ago at Baiyangdian Lake, a major wetland in northern China, he just wanted to record his favorite species—egrets. Then, things snowballed. In the following years, the teacher became a bird-watcher, a volunteer ranger at the lake, a photographer documenting over 110 bird species and an educator popularizing bird-related information among students.” Sharing bird-protection knowledge with children can make them feel the beauty of their hometown and the importance of birds, and help them cultivate the habit of protecting birds from an early age,” he says.
Over time, Zhou’s interest in birds continued to grow. In 2021, he was appointed as a bird observer by the natural resources bureau (自然资源局) of Anxin county, responsible for conducting regular patrols (巡逻) and popularizing bird-related knowledge. To monitor birds, Zhou would ride a bike to Baiyangdian almost every day before dawn, whatever the weather. He would record the birds appearing at the lake, along with their locations, where they fed and when they migrated, thus providing reference data for staff members of the natural resources bureau of Anxin county.
Although Zhou takes delight in the role, there are still many challenges. Sometimes, he has to navigate earth embankments on his bike. One summer day in 2021, he fell into a ditch with water more than a meter deep, resulting in water damage to his cellphone.
However, these difficult episodes have not undermined Zhou’s love of birds. Over the years, he has taken more than 100,000 pictures of the birds at Baiyangdian. During his spare time, he reads books on China’s birds, talks with other enthusiasts and university professors, and updates his WeChat official account to introduce Baiyangdian to a wider audience.
These days, Zhou’s schedule is growing busier. In addition to his regular patrols near the lake, he is sometimes invited to local schools to give lectures, keeping students informed about birds and how to protect them. Zhou will retire next month. “I will continue patrolling the lake and photographing the birds to contribute to the protection of birds in my hometown,” he says.
32. Why did Zhou start taking photos of birds at first?
A. To share bird-protection knowledge with children.
B. To cultivate the habit of protecting birds.
C. To keep track of his favorite species.
D. To become a volunteer ranger at the lake.
33. What did Zhou do to track birds?
A. He rode a bike to Baiyangdian every day before dawn.
B. He went to Baiyangdian in all weathers.
C. He recorded all the birds along with their locations.
D. He provided reference data for natural resources bureau.
34. What can we infer about Zhou’s job as a bird observer?
A. He didn’t meet any challenges while doing the job.
B. He reads books about birds all over the world in his free time.
C. He is invited to local schools to give lectures every day.
D. He uses social media to introduce Baiyangdian to more people.
35. Which of the following best describes Zhou?
A. Enthusiastic and controlling. B. Knowledgeable and persistent.
C. Farsighted and reserved. D. Considerate and stubborn.

(人文情怀)Grandpa David’s birthday was a week away. Michael and his parents were busy planning a big party for him when Grandpa invited him for a walk. Thinking of Grandpa’s joy of waving at passers-by, Michael eagerly agreed. “I’m ready, Grandpa!” Michael replied, watching Grandpa put on his beloved red hat before they went out.
As they walked, Grandpa cheerfully waved at the cars that drove by. A young boy leaned out of the window and shouted, “There’s the man in the red hat!” Grandpa waved to him and the people in the next three cars, all of whom joyfully waved back. Although Michael didn’t understand why Grandpa was doing so, he thought it interesting.
As they turned a corner, an old man with a brown hat was walking towards them. “Hi, Joseph, it’s good to see you,” Grandpa greeted him warmly. “I hate going out in winter!” Joseph complained, pulling his scarf up over his mouth and nose as he walked by. “He’s bad-tempered (脾气坏的)!” Michael said in a low voice. But Grandpa whispered to him that Joseph was just lonely, for he lived by himself, and suggested they might be able to help.
Suddenly, a rush of wind blew off Joseph’s brown hat, sending it towards the pond before the hat disappeared from sight. Joseph was very upset, shaking in the cold. Without hesitation, Grandpa lent a helping hand. “You can take mine if you don’t mind,” he said, handing his red hat over to Joseph.
“Thanks,” Joseph said, putting on the red hat and continuing on his way. A car passed, and the people inside waved at Joseph, recognizing him as “the man in the red hat”. Another car passed and honked (鸣喇叭). At first confused, Joseph soon caught on, happily waving back at the third car that greeted him.
Observing this heartwarming exchange, Grandpa and Michael couldn’t help but smile, realizing Grandpa’s simple action worked wonders.
Paragraph 1:
A week later, a birthday party was thrown for Grandpa.

C 25. A 26. D 27. D
根据第一段“The teller, apparently new to role, was unsure about the steps. He called his manager for assistance. (这位出纳员显然是新来的,对步骤不太确定。他打电话给经理寻求帮助)”可知,出纳员向经理求助,这是因为作为新员工,出纳员对工作不确定。故选C项。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“The manager patiently explained everything to me, and I really appreciated what he did. (经理耐心地向我解释了一切,我真的很感激他所做的一切)”以及第二段“However, as the manager explained the steps, I couldn’t help but notice the teller’s lack of engagement. Instead of absorbing the guidance, he occupied himself with something else. What struck me most was the manager’s passive response to this behavior. Rather than encouraging the teller to focus on his instruction attentively, he simply completed the task himself and returned to his office.(然而,当经理解释这些步骤时,我忍不住注意到出纳员没有参与。他没有吸收指导,而是忙于其他事情。最让我印象深刻的是经理对这种行为的被动反应。他没有鼓励出纳员专心听讲,而是自己完成了任务,回到了办公室)”可知,经理帮助出纳员完成了出纳员本该做的工作,并且没有出纳员专心听讲,由此可知,经理提供的是绝对替代型的帮助。故选A项。
根据最后一段“This experience reveals a fundamental truth: It is a must to enable people to handle tasks independent of external assistance.
C
According to Dr. John Swaddle, a professor at the Institute for Integrative Conservation at William & Mary, hundreds of millions of birds die every year from window collisions(碰撞).
D 29. D 30. C 31. B
根据第二段“However, if you put decals(贴花纸) or colorful stickers outside of your windows, the birds are more likely to see the barrier and therefore avoid it. (然而,如果你在窗外贴上贴纸或彩色贴纸,鸟类更有可能看到障碍物,从而避开障碍物。)”可知,在窗外贴上贴纸或彩色贴纸,鸟类更有可能看到障碍物,从而避开障碍物。故选D。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“He is the corresponding author of a recent study which tries to figure out how this basic reality of physics impacts on a bird’s experience as it flies near a standard window. (他是最近一项研究的通讯作者,该研究试图弄清楚这一基本物理现实如何影响鸟类在标准窗口附近飞行时的体验。)”可知,实验的目的是弄清物理现象是如何影响鸟类在靠近标准窗户时的体验的,也就是光的反射和鸟类撞窗之间的联系。故选D。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段“When breaking down the problem of avoiding window collisions from a bird’s point of view, Swaddle explained, “The light and reflected imagery from the external surface of the glass is sufficient to obscure a film or decal that is stuck to the inner surface from being seen clearly.”(当从鸟的角度分析避免窗户碰撞的问题时,Swaddle解释道,“玻璃外表面的光线和反射图像足以obscure粘在内表面的薄膜或贴花,使其看不清。”)”
根据最后一段“If you want to protect birds from easily avoidable deaths without buying window film products, there are other solutions.
D

由上文“Being kind has kind of gotten a bad fame recently. Maybe you’ve heard that if you are kind, people will take advantage of you or take you for granted. Or that no good deed goes unpunished. Yes, many people seem to somehow equal kindness to weakness or deficiency. But that’s missing the point.(最近,善良似乎有了一种不好的名声。也许你听说过,如果你善良,人们会利用你或把你视为理所当然。或者说,任何善行都会受到惩罚。是的,许多人似乎把善良等同于软弱或不足。但这没有抓住重点。)”可知,善良被误解了,善良并不是软弱或缺陷,空处应进一步说明善良的真正含义,强调善良需要力量和勇气。B选项“事实上,真正的善良需要力量和勇气”符合语境,且与最后一段“All these are actually reasons why exhibiting genuine kindness is a sign of strength. (所有这些都是展现真正善良是力量的标志的原因。)”相呼应。故选B。

(有些人就是彻头彻尾的坏人。他们信奉“这一切都是关于我的,一直都是”的哲学,在他们需要尊重的事情清单中,善良被排在肚脐线以下。)”可知,下文说明这些人的情况,C选项“另一种情况是,他们实际上是自我中心的人”引出另一类人,即那些以自我为中心的人,并引出下文对这些人的具体介绍,符合语境。故选C。
【40题详解】
由上文“All these are actually reasons why exhibiting genuine kindness is a sign of strength. It means you are able to overcome any type of fear, inferiority (自卑), or internal pain that you may have. (所有这些都是展现真正善良是力量的标志的原因。这意味着你能够克服任何类型的恐惧、自卑或内心的痛苦,)”可知,展现真正的善良需要克服内心的恐惧、自卑或痛苦,空处应进一步说明善良还意味着什么。D选项“这意味着你愿意冒着被利用的风险”符合语境,说明善良还意味着愿意承担被利用的风险。故选D。

“He’s bad-tempered (脾气坏)!” Michael said in a low voice.

A week later, a birthday party was thrown for Grandpa. When the doorbell rang unexpectedly, Michael opened the door to find Joseph standing there, wearing a new red hat and holding a small gift. “Happy birthday, David,” Joseph said warmly, his eyes sparkling — a stark contrast to his grumpy demeanor before. Grandpa embraced him joyfully, introducing Joseph as his special guest. As Joseph joined the celebration, he shared stories with other guests, his laughter filling the room. Michael watched in awe, realizing how Grandpa’s simple act of kindness had melted Joseph’s loneliness, turning a stranger into a friend.
After the party, Michael and two men in red hats began their daily walk. Grandpa and Joseph waved cheerfully at passing cars, while Michael, now wearing a small red hat of his own, eagerly joined in. Drivers honked and waved back, recognizing the trio with bright smiles. When they met a frowning neighbor, Joseph stopped and offered a friendly greeting. To Michael’s surprise, the neighbor paused, then tentatively waved back. As they continued, Michael whispered to Grandpa, “Kindness is like a red hat — everyone notices it.” Grandpa chuckled, patting his shoulder, “And now, you’re passing it on.”
