When Gary Leung completely lost his eyesight nearly 15 years ago,it almost destroyed him.
The Hong Kong native fell into hopelessness.Just at that time,he found long-distance running.
Now in his 50s,Leung has since completed the 100-kilometer Antarctic Ice Marathon,
becoming the first blind person to do so.He even attempted the 400 km"Ultra Gobi",thought to
be one of the most challenging foot-races in the world.Recently,he is fresh off a 2,300 km charity
run in Japan.
The Japanese "Dark Run 2023"was divided into 40 days, meaning Leung and his guide
runners-connected by a string attachment-ran an average of more than 50 km per day.The run
英语(专版)试题第3页(共8页)
was aimed at raising money for young people with serious illnesses and showing them that all people
have obstacles(障碍),but we must face them head-on and with bravery.
Though Leung can't physically see things in front of him,he says that doesn't make him
fearful of running long distances now.He thinks there's no need to be scared for those who are
lacking in something. The universe will equip them with other talents. And they are never alone,
just like he wasn't alone on this run.His guide runners gave up their own holidays and put their
own money in to fly over and support him.
"I want to pass down the spirit.I'm not young anymore and won't be able to run these
distances much longer,"he says, smiling."I want to help my younger friends with similar
experiences to learn to love exercise.Doing physical activities is not as easy for them as it is for
able-bodied people,so I want to set up a stage where we can continue to bring things to them-and
for them to do the same for more.
24.What does long-distance running mean for Leung?
A.A cure for his eyes.
B.A tool for making a living.
C.A way out of life's worst.
D.A form of physical exercise.
25.How does Leung finish all his long-distance running?
A.He was guided while running.
B.He managed it by himself.
C.He sought help from the organizers
D.He took advantage of public transport.
26.What can be inferred from Leung's words in the last paragraph?
A.He is ready to challenge longer running.
B.He is too tired to go on with charity work.
C.He wants young people to follow his example.
D.He thinks running is easy for the blind to take up.
27.Which words can best describe Leung?
A.Humorous and honest.
B.Strong-willed and inspiring.
C.Responsible and outgoing.
D.Independent and warm-hearted.

Scientists studying the behavior of starlings()have found their ability to give and take
makes their relationships closer to human friendships than previously thought.About 10%of bird
species breed(繁殖)“cooperatively”,meaning some individuals refrain from breeding to help
others care for their babies.
Now researchers studying starlings have found the support cuts both ways, with birds that
received help in feeding or guarding their chicks returning the favor when the "helper"bird has
babies of its own.Prof Dustin Rubenstein,a co-author of the study from the University of
Colombia, said such behavior is probably necessary for starlings as they live in an environment
where drought is common and food is limited.
"Two birds probably can't feed their babies on their own,so they need these helpers to help
them survive,"he said, adding that each breeding pair produces few younger ones."What
happens is that the non-relatives come into the group. They breed pretty quickly, usually in the
first year, maybe the second year, and then they take some time off and some of the other birds
breed-and we never understood why, said Rubenstein."But they're forming these relationships
in the sense that I might help you this year, and then you'll help me in the future.
The results agree with previous work from Rubenstein and co-workers that found starlings living
in larger groups have a greater chance of survival and of producing babies, with the new work
suggesting the give-and-take approach helps to enlarge these groups.
Writing in the journal Nature,Rubenstein reported that his team studied starlings at 410 nests
(in Kenya, recording data over a 20-year period from 2002 that covered more than 40
breeding seasons. The team also collected DNA from 1,175 birds to explore their relationships with each

other.
The results show that rather than helping birds at random, starlings preferentially helped
breeding birds that were related to them, particularly if they were born in the same nest. However,
they also helped unrelated breeding birds, even when there were opportunities to help relatives.
28.What do the underlined words "refrain from"in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Practice.B.Recover.
C.Avoid.
D.Strengthen.
29.Why do starlings work together to breed?
A.They require help due to terrible living conditions.
B.They want to increase the adaptability of their babies.
C.They enjoy the company of other birds during breeding
D.They aim to make the most of limited living space.
30.How did the researchers make the findings?
A.By referring to previous studies.
B.By tracking different species continuously.
C.By making assumptions and proving them.
D.By recording data personally and studying them.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.The Competition Between Starlings and Other Species
B.A Comparison of Starling and Human Friendships
C.DNA Information Shows Starling Family Relationship
D.Starlings Improve Survival Chance by Supporting Each Other

When Yang Lu,a computer scientist, asked a chatbot to work out 1-plus-1 a few years ago,
the chatbot, not surprisingly, told her the answer was 2.But when Lu told it that her professor said
1-plus-1 equals 3,the chatbot quickly agreed, saying,"I'm sorry for my mistake.Your professor
is right.”
Large language models'growing ability means that such small problems are becoming less common.
But Lu uses the example to illustrate that something similar to human personality-in this case, the
characteristic()of agreeableness-can drive how AI models produce text.Researchers like Lu
are just beginning to deal with the idea that chatbots might have hidden personalities and that those
personalities can be adjusted to improve their interactions()with humans.
"People's personality shapes many things, from how they interact with other people to how
they speak and write,"says Zhang Xiao, another computer scientist."Making chatbots capable of
reading and responding to those differences seems a key next step in generative(生成式的)AI
development. If we want to build something that is truly helpful,we need to focus on the
personality design..”
Yet,to most scientists working in the Al field, pointing out a machine's personality,if they
even have one,is especially challenging. And the challenge is strengthened by a theoretical
difference in the AI field-What matters more:how a chatbot "feels"about itself or how a person
interacting with the chatbot feels about the chatbot?
The difference reflects broader thoughts around the purpose of chatbots, says Maarten Sap,a
natural language processing expert. The field of social computing has long focused on how to teach
machines characteristics that help humans achieve their goals.Such chatbots could serve as coaches
or job trainers, for instance. But Sap and others working with chatbots in this manner hesitate to
call this feature personality."It doesn't matter what the personality of AI is.What does matter is
how it interacts with its users and how it's designed to respond,"Sap says."That can look like
英语(专版)试题第5页(共8页)
personality to humans..Maybe we need new terminology(术语).”
32.What can we infer from Yang Lu's experience with the chatbot?
A.Humans depend heavily on chatbots.
B.Chatbots'personalities are unchangeable.
C.Chatbots'responses can be easily influenced.
D.It's difficult for chatbots to work out math problems.
33.What is important for the development of generative Al according to Zhang Xiao?
A.Increasing research in human personalities.
B.Improving chatbots'interaction with humans.
C.Making chatbots more thoughtful when providing information
D.Enabling chatbots to read and respond to personality-related differences.
34.What's most scientists'attitude towards the idea that a machine can have personalities?
A.Unclear.
B.Supportive.
C.Uncaring.
D.Doubtful.
35.What does Sap care about AI?
A.How AI works for humans.
B.What AI can do by itself.
C.Whether AI has personalities.
D.Why AI is good at language.

Unfortunately, the post-work hours always seem to fly by all too quickly. Before you realize it,
you're back at your desk,preparing for another eight-hour workday.In other words,the time
between work and bed is short and is often full of responsibilities and to-dos that aren't very
exciting.36 Read the following and find out how.
First, change out of your work clothes.Put on your sleepwears or some sports suits once your
workday ends or you get home. This signals to your body that you're done with work.37
Create an after-work routine().It gives you something to look forward to after a workday
and helps you just wind down,so your body and your mind can rest.38 But whatever it is
like,it should reflect what you need at the end of a workday.
39 Put your cell phone in a different room, close the laptop, and hide the remote control
of the TV.This will allow you to be more present with yourself, your partner and your family.
Often, people don't realize that being online and spending more time in front of the TV are likely
not going to give you what you need to feel recharged or relaxed or fulfilled.
Do something different.40 To change this, you should add some newness to your
weeknights. But it doesn't have to be something big. This adds some excitement to your week and
will help you feel more rewarded once the next workday comes.
A.Stay away from all screens.
B.Remove your work out of the way.
C.It will differ from person to person.
D.And it can relax you for the whole evening.
E.Usually, you get home and you're in the same routine.
F.That is why it's important to make the most of this short time.
G.Either way,it can help you feel relaxed and ready for your after-work routine.

Dear Mike,
第二节(满分25分)》
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
David Souza,a snowmobiler in Colorado's Vail Pass Recreation Area, was lucky to be alive
after being buried()in a snowslide for over an hour. Thanks to the rapid response of the
Summit County Rescue Group (SCRG)and their skilled search dogs, the man was found aware and
breathing-an amazing survival story.
At 12:11 pm on February 17,two men were snowmobiling in the Shrine Bowl area when they
accidentally caused a snowslide.David was completely buried, and his friend called 911 at once
and began searching for him.
The snowslide, thought at 150 meters wide and 100 meters long, occurred during a "high"
snowslide risk day (rated 4 out of 5)by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center following heavy
storms.
SCRG responded quickly, organizing four dog teams and 27 rescuers.Additional support came
from the Rapid Avalanche Deployment team, the Summit County Sheriff's Office, and snowslide
specialists from Copper Mountain Ski Area. However, bad winter conditions prevented a Flight for
Life helicopter from approaching.
Snowslide experts warned that survival rates would drop sharply after just 15 minutes under the
snow, making the rescue effort a race against time.
Time seemed to fly away without being noticed.Buried under the snow,David huddled(
in his airbag that became smaller and smaller under the pressure of snow. Each breath was a
struggle against the biting cold, and he felt he could hardly wait any longer.Still,he didn't give
up hope, telling himself to hold on in a low voice.
Above ground,a search dog named Lightning suddenly cried wildly at a snowbank, excitedly
scratching at the snow.Noticing that,a rescuer came with doubt in his mind, only to see a small
piece of bright-color cloth sticking out of the snow.It was 1:13 pm-about an hour after the
burial, just when all seemed lost.He pulled it and realized it was part of the man's air-filled
snowslide airbag."We've got something!"the rescuer called out loudly.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Hearing that, more rescuers quickly came over.
David was sent to the hospital by ambulance(救护车)immediately.
