The desire to collect things of beauty and significance goes deep into history Museums not only exhibit but also safeguard these art objects for future generations. Here are some of the best museums in the world.
Prado Museum
The Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain features some of the best collections of European art, from the 12th century to the early 19th century. The best-known work on display at the museum, opened in 1819, is Velázquez’s Las Meninas. A 22-year-old Australian man has been suffering from a mysterious illness that causes his body to feel hot when he experiences cold, and cold when he touches anything hot.
Aidan McManus’ troubles began at the age of 17, when he was in his final year of high school. At first, he lost feeling in his feet. He went to the hospital, where doctors gave him some medicine, but that didn’t help his condition at all. Things only got worse from there, as the simple act of walking felt like stepping on sharp nails, and he was diagnosed (诊断) with a post-viral irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which complicated his condition even more. Despite his failing health, Aidan managed to graduate from high school, but then he began experiencing a strange feeling in his hands as well. When he touched something cold, his hands felt like they were burning, and when he touched something hot, it felt extremely cold.
“We were told it would eventually spread to Aidan’s hands,” the young man’s mother, Angela McManus, said. “We were thinking that might happen years down the track, but one night, Aidan came to me and said, ‘Mum, I picked up my can of Coke and my hands felt like they were on fire’.”
Doctors have been trying to decipher Aidan’s condition for years; they have run dozens of tests, but they couldn’t come up with an answer. Eventually, a doctor confirmed the 22-year-old had a generalized nerve disorder. Unfortunately, Australia’s National Disability Insurance Agency rejected Aidan’s request for support, claiming that he hadn’t “examined all possible treatment options”. However, his doctor clarified that he was suffering from a progressive neurological condition, for which there is no known treatment. “I think you should reconsider your decision as he has an incurable disability that will continue to worsen,” the doctor’s letter to the agency read.
4. What’s wrong with Aidan?
A. He has trouble moving around himself.
B. His body confuses cold and hot feelings.
C. He has been in poor health since childhood.
D. His sense of touch is more sensitive than normal.
5. What can be learned from Aidan’s mother’s words?
A. The doctor misjudged Aidan’s situation.
B. The disease developed faster than expected.
C. She believed the condition wouldn’t last long.
D. Aidan got an abnormal reaction to the medicine.
6. What does the underlined word “decipher” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Depend on. B. Adapt to. C. Learn from. D. Figure out.
7. What does Aidan’s doctor think of his condition?
A. It will take much time for him to recover. B. The disease will mainly affect his hands.
C. He should be supported by the agency. D. The disease can harm his walking ability.
C
A new study led by the University of Bristol showed that when 13-year-old children who were picky eaters as preschoolers got to choose their own food (school dinners) at lunchtime, they were less picky about what they ate, compared with a packed lunch.
In the study, picky children were less likely than their non-picky peers (同龄人) to have meat or fish sandwich fillings, and more likely to have fillings such as peanut butter or cheese spread. They were also less likely to eat fruit or salad in packed lunches. However, when picky children ate school dinners, they ate a wider variety of foods and made more similar choices to those of their peers.
Researchers looked at questionnaire data from more than 5,300 children in another study. They looked into information from different preschool ages and again at age 13 to understand how picky eating behavior changes over time.
Of the children participating, around half had packed lunches on most days, over a quarter had school dinners on most days and just over a third had school dinners on some days. There was no difference in the frequency of having packed lunches versus school dinners between picky and non-picky eaters.
Picky eating peaks at around 3 years of age, but this study showed some of those who were picky as babies continued to show similar behavior at 13 years old. However, school dinners could help picky children explore more foods and become healthier overall.
Dr. Caroline Taylor, lead researcher from the University of Bristol, said, “We found school dinners could be a good option to increase variety in the diets of picky teens, but there are plenty of other things parents can do to encourage a healthy diet. Whether that’s enjoying family meals together, modeling a balanced diet yourself, or involving them in meal preparation, it all helps. Most picky children are eating enough, but they’re sometimes lacking a good balance of foods. It’s important to encourage all children to eat enough nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables to help them grow, whether that’s at home or at school.”
8. How does the packed lunch affect picky eaters?
A. It enhances their hands-on ability.
B. It encourages them to try new foods.
C. It limits their intake of fruits and salads.
D. It reduces their preference for peanut butter fillings.
9. How did the researchers get the findings?
A. They analyzed data from previous research.
B. They interviewed parents about their children’s diets.
C. They carried out some experiments on food preferences.
D. They made observations of children’s diets in real time.
10. What do Dr. Caroline Taylor’s words imply?
A. Picky eating among teenagers is a widespread phenomenon.
B. Schools should stop students bringing their packed lunches.
C. Role modeling matters most in shaping teens’ eating habits.
D. Multiple approaches can be applied to aid teens’ healthy diets.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The Reasons for Teens’ Picky Habit at School
B. A Long-Term Study on Children’s Eating Habits
C. School Dinners May Help Picky Teens Explore More Foods
D. Parents Should Pay More Attention to Children’s Eating Habits
D
Agrivoltaics (农业光伏) is the practice of using the same land for farming and producing solar energy. This practice often involves placing solar panels (太阳能板) over farmland. The word “agrivoltaics” is a combination of “agriculture” and “photovoltaics”. Agriculture refers to farming while photovoltaics describes technology that makes electricity from sunlight. Solar panels are one example.
Solar farms use solar panels to create clean energy. But these farms take up a lot of land. Farms that grow crops and raise livestock, such as sheep and cows, occupy a lot of land as well. Agrivoltaics saves space by allowing farmers to get electricity and food from the same land.
Research has shown that adding solar panels to farms can actually help crops. Leafy crops, such as lettuces and some herbs, grow well in the shade of the solar panels. The plants can also benefit from the increased soil moisture (水分) in partially shaded ground. Agrivoltaics may benefit livestock, too. For example, farmers might allow sheep to eat grass under solar panels. This would give them relief from the hot sun in the summer.
Other agrivoltaics projects focus on appealing to pollinators (传粉昆虫). For example, planting wildflowers under solar panels can attract butterflies, bees and other insects. These tiny helpers can then pollinate nearby crops.
No single agrivoltaics technique works everywhere. Squash (a kind of vegetable), for example, generally need direct sunlight. So they don’t grow well under solar panels. Even lower-light crops may have trouble growing well in agrivoltaics setups, For example, the shade from solar panels helps keep the soil moisture. On some farms, this comes as a benefit. But it may also increase the risk of some plant diseases. And water pouring off the panels during a rainstorm may overwater some plants.
Researchers today are exploring how to minimize these and other challenges. They are also finding ways to help farmers improve the harvest of their crops to the greatest degree and produce as much electricity as possible from the same land.
12. What is a function of agrivoltaics?
A. Sparing enough land to feed livestock.
B. Reducing the cost of solar energy production.
C. Improving traditional farming methods with solar panels.
D. Maximizing land use for both farming and energy production.
13. What does paragraph 3 focus on?
A. The benefits of agrivoltaics for crops and animals.
B. The challenges of growing crops under solar panels.
C. The types of crops that grow best under solar panels.
D. The comparisons between traditional farming and agrivoltaics.
14. Why are squash mentioned in the text?
A. To explain that agrivoltaics has limitations.
B. To display that plants should have enough sunlight.
C. To emphasize the role of soil moisture in crop selection.
D. To show that agrivoltaics is beneficial to vegetable growth.
15. What are researchers currently doing regarding agrivoltaics?
A. They are building solar panels that take up less space.
B. They are improving crops suitable to grow under solar panels.
C. They are trying to maximize the production of crops and energy.
D. They are teaching farmers how to make proper use of solar panels.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How rapidly the world has changed becomes clear when we consider how even quite recent computer technology feels ancient today. Mobile phones in the 1990s were big bricks with tiny green displays. ___16___ In a short period, they developed so quickly and became such a necessary part of our daily lives. No wonder it’s easy to forget how recent this technology is. The first digital computers were only invented about eight decades ago.
___17___ Folklore and historical attempts to build programmable devices reflect this long-standing ambition. And fiction is filled with the possibilities of intelligent machines, imagining their benefits and dangers. It’s no wonder that when OpenAI released the first version of GPT, it quickly gained widespread attention, marking a significant step toward realizing this ancient dream.
Computers and artificial intelligence (AI) have developed greatly. ___18___ Because computer technology feels so familiar, it is easy to forget that all of these technologies we interact with today are very recent innovations and that the most profound changes are yet to come.
AI has already changed what we see, what we know, and what we do. ___19___ On the contrary, particularly over the course of the last decade, the fundamental trends have accelerated (加速): investments in AI technology have rapidly increased, and the doubling time of training computation has shortened to just six months.
All major technological innovations lead to a range of positive and negative consequences. This is already true of AI. ___20___
A. However, we are still in the early stages of the development.
B. In recent years, very few people have understood the field of AI.
C. Humans have dreamed of creating thinking machines since ancient times.
D. Two decades before that, the main storage for computers was huge cards.
E. And there are no signs that these trends are hitting any limits anytime soon.
F. As this technology becomes more and more powerful, its effects will still increase.
G. A technological development as powerful as this should be at the center of our attention.

Tom, a ten-year-old, lived in a small, sun-faded house on the edge of town. His parents worked long hours to make ends meet, leaving him often alone after school. Though he had no brothers or sisters, Tom never felt lonely as he had his worm leather soccer ball, which was his most prized thing. Tom would play it in the driveway. Yet lately, a quiet wish had taken root in his heart: He wanted someone to come home to. Not just an empty house, but a small, warm presence — a cat, maybe — that would greet him with purrs (呜呜声) instead of silence.
One day, Tom was kicking his ball on the sidewalk. Suddenly, he heard a soft cry from a side street. He looked behind a trash bin and saw a thin gray cat hiding under a cardboard box. Three young men were laughing and poking (戳) the cat with a stick. Its fur was messy, and its eyes looked very scared. Tom felt a tightness in his throat. He knew he should leave — what if the teens started trouble with him? But the cat’s cry broke his heart, making him feel his own loneliness even more. “Stop!” The word escaped him before he could think. The teens turned, surprised. Tom’s hands sweated as he stepped forward, holding his soccer ball. “Leave it alone.”
“Or what?” one boy jeered (嘲笑), kicking the box. Without hesitation, Tom held out his ball. “Take it. Just let the cat go.”
The teens exchanged glances. “Fine,” the tallest one said, taking the ball away quickly. “Loser.” They pushed Tom, laughing, as the ball’s familiar weight left his hands. Tom held back the pain in his throat and picked up the cat, which rubbed against his hand. “Now you’re safe,” he thought. He took the cat home. In the evening, when Tom’s parents came home, Tom told them what had happened and expressed that he wanted to keep the cat.
“Tom, we know that you want a cat, but this is not ours. The cat seems to be pregnant (怀孕的), and its owner must be worried about it,” Mom said gently to Tom. Then Tom knew he must do something right.

【答案】
That evening, Tom wrote “FOUND A CAT” posters in bright colors. He drew a picture of the gray cat and wrote down where he’d found it. As he put them up, an old lady stopped and said, “That’s my Mimi! I’ve been looking for her for days.” Tom’s heart sank but he smiled, “She’s safe at my house. Let’s go get her.” The lady thanked him, saying Mimi was pregnant and she’d been worried sick.
Days later, the cat owner knocked on Tom’s door again, with a basket in hand. Inside was a new soccer ball and a small box. “I heard what you did to save her, and this is a gift for you.” she said. “Mimi had kittens, and I want you to have one. She’ll be the friend you’ve been wanting.” Tom opened the box, and a tiny gray kitten looked up at him. He knew this was the warm presence he’d wished for, which would greet him every day after school.
