I loved being a teacher, but for years I was a librarian. However, the timing was never right for me to go back to school. Finally, the time came and I received my media specialist degree. But my biggest challenge was yet to come. I wanted to find a job—a media specialist in a nearby elementary school, and those positions were hard to get.
The new school year started, and I was teaching fourth grade again. As the months passed from August to December without any job prospects, my optimism and faith began to decline. To stay positive, I listened repeatedly to several uplifting songs in the car to my son’s school and my job.
In the beginning of January I saw a job posted online for a media specialist position. I knew I had to have faith, so I applied for the job, but I didn’t hear anything for weeks. I started to doubt myself. I played my uplifting music so much that my little son who knew the words would sing along. Admiring the dynamic state of my son, suddenly I came to realize that I just had to have faith and remain true to my dream.
Within days, I received a phone call from the school to which I had applied, requesting an interview. I went on the interview with confidence and faith. The result was unforgettable. I am proud to say I’m now a media specialist.
From my experience, what I want to share is that ambitious career aspiration is a strong drive for one’s development. Set your goal of life and follow it with all you can.
4. What’s the biggest challenge for the author?
A. Landing a job as a media specialist.
B. Finding a proper time to go back to school.
C. Gaining the media specialist degree.

6. What does the underlined word “aspiration” probably mean in the last paragraph?
A. Protection. B. Quality. C. Desire. D. Talent.
7. Which words can best describe the author’s experience?
A. Eventful and disappointing.
B. Smooth and rewarding.
C. Challenging but practical.
D. Challenging but beneficial.

Wildlife experts are asking Australians to drive carefully to avoid unnecessary roadkill as native animal numbers drop following years of natural disasters.
Kristie Newton from WIRES said the recent floods across Eastern Queensland and New South Wales could lead to an increase in animal roadkill accidents with wildlife on the move. “This year it might be even worse because they’re traveling a bit further to find food,” Newton said. “Important food sources like grasses have become less and less, forcing many animals to move outside their habitat in search of food, and turn up in unusual places.”
“The fires killed millions and millions of native animals, and now we’ve had the floods. So it’s important that we try and protect what animals we’ve got left.” the wildlife expert said. The 2019-20 bushfires in Australia have affected nearly three billion animals.
According to AAMI Insurance, more than ten percent of all animal roadkill accidents happen in May. More than 15,500 AAMI animal collision claims last year showed that central Victoria’s Heathcote was the country’s most dangerous place for wild animals. Victoria was also the worst state for animal roadkill, with almost one third of animal accidents taking place on Victorian roads. New South Wales and Queensland followed closely behind.
Newton said moving a dead animal off the road can be a good way to prevent unnecessary death. “Birds also come down and feed on those bodies, and we see a lot of them get hit when doing that.” She is also encouraging drivers to do the right thing if they hit an animal. “Please pull over where it is safe to check whether the animal is injured,” said Newton. “For your own safety never set close to an adult kangaroo, even if it’s injured.”
8. What is the main reason for the increase in animal roadkill accidents?
A. People traveling more than before.
B. Animals preferring to feed alongside roads.
C. Cities becoming more attractive to animals.
D. Animals having to move because of natural disasters.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. What damage Australian bush fires have had.
B. Natural disasters make it hard to protect wildlife.
C. Why it is high time people protected Australian animals.
D. Bush fire s are much more dangerous to animals than floods.
10. What information can we get from AAMI Insurance?
A. Most roadkill accidents happened in 2019.
B. Animals in New South Wales suffered most.
C. Queensland took quick action to end roadkill.
D. Heathcote saw most roadkill accidents in Australia.
11. What is the right thing for drivers to do in Newton’s opinion?
A. Leave the dead animal alone. B. Stop and check on the hit animal.
C. Drive off the birds on the roads. D. Touch an injured kangaroo to calm it.
D
The United States is a country of immigrants. It is a place where people from all over the world come to build a better life. Some immigrants bring their families. Some bring a few of their favorite things. Others come alone with nothing but determination. One thing that every immigrant brings with them is their culture.
American immigration began in 1607 with the colony (殖民地) of Jamestown. In 1620, another group of people left England to build a settlement in America. They wanted to go to a place where they could practice their religion freely. Then many more people left their homes in Europe to build a better life in America. Many also came to America from Africa. By 1770, more than two million people had moved to America. Later on, more people came to the United States than ever before.
In cities all over America, you can see different cultures that formed this country. Many things that you may think of as being “American” are actually from a foreign culture. Some of the best examples of this are the foods people eat. Pizza and spaghetti are foods that all Americans know and love. But both of them are from Italy. Baseball is an all-American sport. But the hot dogs that people eat during the game are a type of food that was brought to America by German immigrants.
Over time, pizza and hot dogs have become a part of what is considered to be American food. In the same way, different groups of people have come together to define what an American is. An American can be a person of any background. An American can be of any faith. An American can be of any skin color. They can speak English clearly. They can speak English with an accent. Each new immigrant adds something new to American culture. It will keep changing as more people come to this country.
12. Paragraph 2 is mainly about _____.
A. the history of American immigration
B. why people chose to move to America
C. the rapid growth of the population of America
D. what immigrants have brought to America
13. Several foods are mentioned in the text to show _____.
A. they have a long history in America
B. they are very popular with Americans
C. America is a country full of tasty foods
D. America is made up of different cultures
14. The author probably agrees that American culture is _____.
A. simple B. strange
C. diverse D. advanced
15. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Immigrants and their American dreams
B. America: a melting pot of cultures
C. America: a land of opportunity
D. Life in the US: culture shock

47. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was probably her giggling(咯咯笑) that drew my attention. English reading really wasn’t that funny as far as I knew.
It was early May and I was facing a class of sixteen kids. Though I had almost three years of teaching, this particular sixth grade class had pushed me to the limits of my patience far too many times, and I couldn’t wait to wave goodbye to them for the summer.
I had kept away from the ideal of my first year of teaching. That first year I’d covered up the small hole in the window with an inspirational poster. I’d decorated the walls with pictures of famous universities. I told the kids daily that they always had something worth struggling for. Together we would work hard and make something of their lives.
The problem, of course, was that my ideals kept being defeated by reality. Not just the reality of troubled families. I was also faced with the basic reality of the twelve- and thirteen-year-old mind. The universal mind, “You can’t make me!”
And now I was faced with a giggle when I should have had only full attention. Walking over to the young peacebreaker, I asked for the note she had in her hands. Frozen, she refused to give it to me. I waited, all attention in the room on the quiet battle between teacher and student. When she finally handed it over, saying, “Okay, but I didn’t draw it,” which showed this wasn’t just an ordinary note being passed.
After getting the class going on an English reading test, I finally had a chance to look through it. It was a hand-drawn picture of me, eyes monitoring widely, teeth blackened, and the words “I’m stupid” coming out of my mouth. There was no doubt about who it was supposed to be.
I managed to fold up the picture calmly. My mind, however, was working angrily and wanting to criticize some students on the scene. I figured I knew the two most likely candidates for drawing the picture. Maybe it was high time that I did it!
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Thankfully, calmness returned to my mind.

Looking over the notes later, I realized I was too strict with them.

【答案】8. D 9. C 10. D 11. B

B. they are very popular with Americans
C. America is a country full of tasty foods
D. America is made up of different cultures
14. The author probably agrees that American culture is _____.
A. simple B. strange

15. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Immigrants and their American dreams

C America: a land of opportunity
D. Life in the US: culture shock

How is everything going? I’m writing to invite you to join our community volunteer program during the winter vacation, which will let you know more about Chinese community life. We need volunteers to help the elderly and clean public areas.
The activities will include visiting lonely seniors to chat with them, and organizing a neighborhood clean-up day. We plan to work every morning from January 20th to 25th. It’s a great chance to experience local life and make a difference!
If you’re interested, please let me know by next Monday. Looking forward to your reply!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

第二节(满分25分)
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Thankfully, calmness returned to my mind.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Looking over the notes later, I realized I was too strict with them.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Thankfully, calmness returned to my mind. Suppressing my pride, I showed them the picture. The whole class was silent as I told them how hurtful this was for a teacher. Struggling to control my emotion, I demanded there must be a reason behind for such a picture and that now was their chance to tell me anything they needed to tell me. Asking them to get out of paper and write silently, I sniffled in the back of the classroom.
Looking over the notes later, I realized I was too strict with them. Where I thought I was driving them to success, I was actually driving them away. After class, the girl walked up, handing me a card embarrassedly. One side of the card was sincere regret for the ugly joke while the other side the appeal for forgiveness. I was deeply moved. Meanwhile, a great sense of guilt arose for being too harsh. After all, students appreciate being appreciated, for teachers’ encouragement is their best motivating force.
