Greeting
T: Good morning, class! Nice to see you again. How are you today?
S: Fine, thank you. And you?
T: I'm great. Are you ready to have an interesting English class?
S: Yes!
Lead - in
T: Life is full of all kinds of situations. Sometimes, we might find ourselves in a bit of a tough spot. Let's start today's class by thinking about some common problems we face in our daily lives. Now, I want you to close your eyes and recall any problem that has bothered you recently. It could be something at home, at school, or with your friends. (Wait for a while) OK, open your eyes. Who would like to share a problem they thought of?
S1: I have too much homework, and I don't have enough time to play.
T: Oh, that's a common one. It seems like the homework load is really heavy. What about others?
S2: My parents don't allow me to watch TV on weekdays.
T: Hmm, restrictions from parents can be frustrating. Thanks for sharing. So, as you can see, we all have different problems. In today's lesson, we are going to learn how to talk about these problems in English and, more importantly, how to give advice to solve them. Our topic for today is from Unit 4 "Why don't you talk to your parents?"
Presentation - 1a
T: Now, look at the screen. (Show the pictures in 1a) Here are some teenagers. They seem to have some problems. Let's first look at the boy in the first picture. What do you think his problem might be?
S3: He looks tired. Maybe he has to study too much so he doesn't get enough sleep.
T: Excellent guess! That's exactly what it says under the picture. Let's read this sentence together. "I have to study too much so I don't get enough sleep." (Read together) Now, let's move on to the second picture. What about this girl?
S4: She has a lot of books in her hands. Perhaps she has too much homework so she doesn't have any free time to do things she likes.
T: Great job! You've caught the key point. Read this sentence after me, "I have too much homework so I don't have any free time to do things I like." (Read together)
T: Now, look at the third picture. This boy looks a bit sad. What's wrong with him?
S5: His parents don't allow him to hang out with his friends.
T: Right! Read this sentence, "My parents don't allow me to hang out with my friends." (Read together)
T: How about the fourth picture? What can you observe?
S6: The girl is going to some classes after school. She might have too many after - school classes.
T: Perfect! Read this sentence, "I have too many after - school classes." (Read together)
T: Finally, look at the last picture. The two boys seem to be angry with each other. What do you think happened?
S7: They got into a fight with each other.
T: Exactly! Read this sentence, "I got into a fight with my best friend." (Read together)
Pair - work
T: Now, I want you to work with your partner. One of you chooses a problem from the pictures, and the other tries to give a reason for that problem. For example, if your partner says "I have to study too much so I don't get enough sleep", you can say "Maybe because there will be a big exam soon." You can use your imagination. Start! (Walk around the classroom, listen to students' conversations, and offer help if needed)
T: OK, time's up. Who would like to share your conversation with the class?
Pair 1:
S8: I have too much homework so I don't have any free time to do things I like.
S9: Maybe your teachers want you to practice more to improve your grades.
T: Good job! Your reason makes sense. How about another pair?
Pair 2:
S10: My parents don't allow me to hang out with my friends.
S11: Perhaps they are worried about your safety outside.
T: Well done! You two have a good understanding.
Presentation - How to give advice
T: Since we've talked about these problems, now it's time to learn how to give advice. Look at the screen. Here's an example. If someone says "I have to study too much so I don't get enough sleep", we can give advice like this: "Why don't you go to sleep earlier this evening?" Read this sentence after me. (Read together)
T: This is a very common way to give advice in English. We use "Why don't you + verb 原形". Another way is "You should + verb 原形". For example, for the same problem, we can also say "You should manage your study time better." Read this sentence. (Read together)
T: Now, I'll show you some more examples on the screen. (Show more examples of giving advice for different problems) Let's read them together.
T: "I have too much homework so I don't have any free time to do things I like. Why don't you make a to - do list? You should learn to say no to extra tasks sometimes." (Read together)
T: "My parents don't allow me to hang out with my friends. Why don't you have a talk with your parents and tell them your feelings? You should promise them you'll be back home on time." (Read together)
T: "I have too many after - school classes. Why don't you talk to your parents about reducing some classes? You should focus on the most important ones." (Read together)
T: "I got into a fight with my best friend. Why don't you say sorry to him first? You should try to communicate and solve the problem." (Read together)
Practice - Giving advice
T: Now, it's your turn. I'll show you some problems on the screen, and I want you to give advice using the two ways we just learned. The first problem is "I lost my favorite book." Who wants to give advice?
S12: Why don't you ask your classmates if they have seen it? You should check the places you usually put your books.
T: Wonderful advice! Let's look at the second problem. "I failed the math test."
S13: Why don't you ask your teacher for help? You should do more math exercises.
T: Great! You are really good at giving advice. The next problem is "My pet dog is sick."
S14: Why don't you take it to the vet? You should take good care of it.
T: Perfect! Keep it up.
Listening - 1b
T: Now, let's move on to the listening part. In this conversation, two friends are talking about problems and giving advice. Listen carefully and circle the problems you hear. Are you ready? Let's play the recording. (Play the recording for the first time)
T: OK, stop. Have you circled some problems? Now, let's play the recording again. Check your answers. (Play the recording for the second time)
T: Time's up. Let's check the answers together. Which problems did you hear?
S15: I heard "I have too much homework so I don't have any free time to do things I like" and "I got into a fight with my best friend."
T: Correct! Well, let's listen to the recording one more time and pay attention to how they give advice. (Play the recording for the third time)
T: Now, who can tell me how they gave advice for the problem "I have too much homework so I don't have any free time to do things I like"?
S16: They said "Why don't you forget about it for now and relax? You should do something you enjoy first."
T: Excellent! And for the problem "I got into a fight with my best friend", how did they give advice?
S17: They said "Why don't you call him up and say you're sorry? You should try to talk to him."
T: Very good! You all listened carefully.
Group - work
T: Now, I want you to work in groups of four. Each group member shares a problem they have. Then, the other three members take turns to give advice using "Why don't you..." and "You should...". I'll give you 10 minutes to have this discussion. Start! (Walk around the groups, listen to their discussions, and offer guidance)
T: OK, time's up. Which group wants to share their discussion with the class?
Group 1:
S18: My problem is that I'm always late for school.
S19: Why don't you set an earlier alarm clock? You should go to bed earlier at night so that you can get up on time.
S20: Why don't you ask your parents to wake you up? You should prepare your school things the night before.
S21: Why don't you plan your morning routine better? You should leave home a few minutes earlier.
T: Great job, Group 1! Your advice is very practical. How about another group?
Group 2:
S22: I can't understand English grammar well.
S23: Why don't you ask your English teacher for more explanations? You should do more grammar exercises.
S24: Why don't you watch some English grammar - teaching videos online? You should make a grammar notebook to write down important points.
S25: Why don't you form a study group with classmates who are good at grammar? You should review grammar regularly.
T: Wonderful! You all did a great job in this group - work.
Summary
T: Today, we've learned a lot. We talked about some common problems teenagers face, such as too much study, no free time, restrictions from parents, too many after - school classes, and fights with friends. We also learned how to give advice using "Why don't you..." and "You should...". Remember, when we face problems, don't be afraid. We can talk to others and get advice to solve them.
T: Let's review the key sentences and phrases we learned today. (Review together)
Homework
T: For homework, I want you to write a short passage about a problem you have and the advice you got from your classmates in the group - work. You should use at least three sentences of giving advice. Bring your passage to class tomorrow and we'll share them with each other.
T: That's all for today's class. Class is over. Goodbye, everyone!
S: Goodbye, teacher!
