Many kinds of birds migrate (迁徙) every year, raising a family in one place during the warm summer months before flying to a warmer place to spend the cold winter months. In the northern half of the world, many birds fly north in the summer and south in the winter, looking for food and better conditions.
Many birds die along the way. Some of these deaths are the result of human actions, such as hunting or clearing huge areas of land that used to be used by migrating birds. But one of the biggest threats to migrating birds comes from things humans have built. Experts say that as many as one billion birds may die every year in the US alone as a result of flying into buildings. Other tall structures, such as power lines and cell towers, also lead to many bird deaths.
Buildings are a special challenge for migrating birds. The windows can reflect things like the sky or trees, causing birds to fly directly into the glass. And many birds migrate at night. As a result, the difficulty in migrating is amplified at night. That is because the bright city lights can confuse birds that are normally guided by the stars.
Philadelphia got a sad reminder of that last October when thousands of migrating birds were killed in one night. Over 1,000 birds were believed to have died in just one small area. Scientists still aren’t sure what made that night so bad, but it may have been connected with the low clouds over the city at the time.
Now the city begins a program called Lights Out Philly. Twice a year (from April 1 to May 31. and from August 15 to November 15), many of the city’s buildings go dark at night. The program, run by Bird Safe Philly, asks building owners and people who live in the area to keep the lights off between midnight and 6 in the morning. So far, many of the city’s best-known and tallest buildings have taken part in the program.
4. What does paragraph 2 tell us about the migration of birds?
A. It takes place once a year.
B. It can affect human activities.
C. It can be hard and dangerous.
D. It is caused by human actions sometimes.
5. What does the underlined word “amplified” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Increased. B. Reduced.
C. Handled. D. Replaced.
6. What does the program run by Bird Safe Philly ask people to do?
A. Stop hunting birds. B. Go out less at night.
C. Build homes for birds in cities. D. Tum off lights during the required time.
7. Why is Lights Out Philly started?
A. To protect the environment.
B. To educate the public on birds.
C. To cut the cost of electricity.
D. To help birds pass Philadelphia safely.

What is art? That’s an easy question to answer. Art is a painting, a drawing or a sculpture. Now there are new items to add to the list. Art is a dead shark in a glass case. Art is an unmade bed. Art is a video of a group of people standing completely still for sixty minutes.
A new group of young artists began to produce work that challenged the accepted idea of what art is and the role the artist should play in society. This group came to be known as the YBAs — the Young British Artists. The art of the YBAs does not just stick to painting and sculpture. It uses all kinds of different materials to express the feeling of the artist.
Damien Hirst is the most famous of the YBAs. The Shark in the Box is his work and is meant to express his own fear of dying. The shark stands for death. Right now, it is harmless. But eventually it will come for you. There is nothing to be done about it.
Traditionally, artists have a message. They use their skills to lead us to enlightenment (启迪). The message of the YBAs is that they cannot do this. They are just as mixed up and confused as everybody else. A journalist once asked Damien Hirst what his next idea was for an artwork. “I don’t know what I’m going to do next. I never know what I’m going to do next,” he replied.
Another YBA, Tracy Emin recently produced a work called “Bed”. This is just her own bed with the sheets disarranged and dirty. And the message? “Look at me — I’m a mess.”
Some artists work with the public in producing their work. Gillian Wearing filmed a group of people dressed as policemen trying to keep still for 60 minutes while standing on top of a table. At the end of that time, the table falls apart and everyone falls to the floor. You can try to be a good citizen and a respectable member of the community. But don’t try too hard or the pressure will be too much.
Art mirrors the state of society. In the work of the YBAs we can see a society on the threshold (开端) of the future — a bit worried, a bit excited and wondering what is going to happen next. The YBAs can’t guide us, but they can make the journey more interesting.
8. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The shark. B. Death.
C. The artwork. D. The fear.
9. What can be inferred from Tracy’s work “Bed”?
A. She needs to be taken care of. B. She sees the world as a dirty one.
C. She compares herself to the bed. D. She hopes for better living conditions.
10. In Gillian’s work, which of the following refers to a person who tries too hard?
A. The table. B. The floor.
C. 60 minutes. D. The group of people.
11 What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To show the YBAs have made a difference in art.
B. To spread the message in the YBAs’ works.
C. To encourage more artists to join the YBAs.
D. To introduce the YBAs and their artworks.

A problem has been annoying you for days — you just can’t solve it, and it’s driving you crazy. But then you go for a walk and suddenly the answer flashes right into your head! It’s a great feeling and this link between exercise and creativity (创新) has been studied by scientists around the world.
Dr. Chong Chen and his team from Japan’s Yamaguchi University wanted to find out how different types of physical activity can help us solve problems and think creatively. They looked at 21 past studies from places including the US, the UK, Spain, Sweden, China, India and Japan. The studied exercises included walking, running, cycling, dance and yoga.
In fact, Chen and his team found that it was natural walking that almost always had a positive effect on people’s creativity — even if it was just walking inside a room or going up and down some stairs, for as little as three to four minutes. Dance is also good. Most of the studies Chen’s team looked at found that dance helps significantly with creativity—particularly among adults. However, the results for yoga were unclear. And low-intensity aerobic exercise (低强度的有氧运动) like cycling was not found to have an effect.
There were some advantages from right and energetic aerobic exercise, however, but “too much effort” exercise seemed not to have a mostly positive effect. That is to say, the hardest exercise actually didn’t give the best results. So completely tiring yourself probably won’t help your creativity!
Chen wrote that his team’s findings could be used in schools and businesses by including short periods of physical activity during the day to encourage creative thinking. It’s not even about keeping fit, Chen says — you just have to move!
As he said, “Knowing that just a few minutes of walking, or other low-intensity physical activity can increase creative thinking should make getting up to move seem more worthwhile.”
12. Why did Dr. Chong Chen look at the past studies?
A. To know about the relation of exercise and creativity.
B. To encourage people from other countries to think creatively.
C. To learn if people take part in exercises in different countries.
D. To explain why different types of physical activity are important.
13. What can we know from their findings?
A. The harder people exercise, the better results are.
B. Proper walking can help people with creativity.
C. Yoga and cycling didn’t have a positive effect.
D. Adults like to dance to improve their creativity.
14. What advice did Chen give to schools and businesses?
A. They should use his findings. B. They had better keep healthy.
C. They can work with each other. D. They need just begin exercises.
15. What could be the best title for the text?
A. Exercises and creativity. B. Feelings and activities.
C. Findings and advantages. D. Researchers and studies.

Baraka sat quietly in his new classroom. He was a boy who had moved from Tanzania to Chicago with his family. His heart was heavy with homesickness. The laughter and soccer games of his homeland felt like a distant dream, and in this new land, Baraka found himself unhappy. And he didn’t want to play with the other kids or join any after-school activities.
Miss Garcia, his teacher, noticed Baraka’s sadness. She saw how he kept to himself during lunch and didn’t join in class activities. Miss Garcia decided to talk to Baraka’s parents to understand why he was in such low spirits. Miss Garcia invited Baraka’s parents for a cup of tea. “Baraka seems to be struggling to adapt,” she said, her voice filled with concern. “He seems to be quite lonely.”
Baraka’s parents shared their worries. “We moved here for work,” they explained. “We thought it would be an adventure for him, but Baraka feels like he’s lost his friends and his home.” Miss Garcia knew she had to do something special for Baraka. She wanted to give him a gift that would show him he wasn’t alone and that his past was still a part of him.
On Baraka’s birthday, Miss Garcia had a surprise for him. “Today, we celebrate not just a birthday, but a journey,” she announced to the class. “We have a special gift for Baraka.” The lights in the classroom dimmed (变暗), and a video began to play. It was a travel video of Tanzania, the land Baraka missed so much. Baraka’s eyes lit up as he saw the familiar scenes of his homeland.

【答案】4. C 5. A 6. D 7. D

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍的是鸟类迁徙面临的挑战及费城为保护鸟类实施的“Lights Out Philly”计划。
【4题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Many birds die along the way. Some of these deaths are the result of human actions, such as hunting or clearing huge areas of land that used to be used by migrating birds. But one of the biggest threats to migrating birds comes from things humans have built.(许多鸟类在迁徙途中死亡。其中一些死亡是人类活动的结果,如狩猎或清除曾经被迁徙鸟类使用的广阔土地。然而,对迁徙鸟类而言,最大的威胁之一来自于人类建造的结构。)”可知,鸟在迁徙途中的一些死亡是人类活动造成,由此可知,鸟类在迁徙过程中会遇到许多危险,包括来自人类行为和建筑物的威胁。故选C。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词前的“And many birds migrate at night.(许多鸟类在夜间迁徙。)”以及划线单词后的“That is because the bright city lights can confuse birds that are normally guided by the stars.(那是因为明亮的城市灯光会让那些通常依靠星星导航的鸟类感到困惑。)”可知,由于明亮的城市灯光会让那些通常依靠星星导航的鸟类感到困惑,所以在夜间迁徙的困难应该是增大,由此可知,划线单词的意思是“增大,扩大”,与“Increased”相近。故选A。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据尾段中的“The program, run by Bird Safe Philly, asks building owners and people who live in the area to keep the lights off between midnight and 6 in the morning.(由Bird Safe Philly运行的该项目,要求建筑业主和居住在该区域的人们在午夜至早上6点之间关闭灯光。)”可知,该项目要求人们在规定时间内关灯。故选D。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“Philadelphia got a sad reminder of that last October when thousands of migrating birds were killed in one night.(去年十月,费城在一个晚上就有数千只迁徙中的鸟类被杀死,这给了费城一个悲伤的提醒。)”以及尾段中的“Now the city begins a program called Lights Out Philly.(现在,该城市启动了一个名为“Lights Out Philly”的计划。)”可知,费城在一个晚上就有数千只迁徙中的鸟类被杀死,因此而启动了“Lights Out Philly”计划,由此可推断,“Lights Out Philly”计划是为了帮助鸟类安全通过费城。故选D。

Traditionally artists have a message.
11. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To show the YBAs have made a difference in art.
B. To spread the message in the YBAs’ works.
C. To encourage more artists to join the YBAs.
D. To introduce the YBAs and their artworks.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. D
【解析】

【8题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“The Shark in the Box is his work and is meant to express his own fear of dying. The shark stands for death. Right now, it is harmless. But eventually it will come for you. (《盒子里的鲨鱼》是他的作品,是为了表达他对死亡的恐惧。鲨鱼代表死亡。现在,它是无害的。但最终它会来找你)”可知,it指代“death”,即死亡现在与“我”无关,但死亡最终会来临。故选B。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的“This is just her own bed with the sheets disarranged and dirty. And the message? ‘Look at me — I’m a mess.’(这只是她自己的床,床单又乱又脏。 那表达了什么呢?‘看看我,我一团糟。’)”可推知,Tracy是将自己比作床。故选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中的“Gillian Wearing filmed a group of people dressed as policemen trying to keep still for 60 minutes while standing on top of a table. At the end of that time, the table falls apart and everyone falls to the floor.(Gillian Wearing拍摄了一群人装扮成警察站在桌子上保持静止60分钟的视频。在这段时间结束时,桌子散了,所有人都倒在了地板上)”可知,在Gillian的作品中,站在桌子上的人和所站的时间表示压力,桌子则为压力的承受者。故选A。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“A new group of young artists began to produce work that challenged the accepted idea of what art is and the role the artist should play in society. This group came to be known as the YBAs — the Young British Artists.(一群新的年轻艺术家开始创作作品,挑战了人们对艺术是什么以及艺术家在社会中应该扮演的角色的公认观念。这个团体后来被称为 YBAs—英国青年艺术家)”以及下文中的例子可推知,本文通过三个实例,主要介绍YBAs及作品是什么样的。故选D。

【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. A

【答案】Dear Tim,
I’m writing to share with you about the recent activity organized by our Calligraphy Association
Last weekend, we held a writing event to promote standardized writing and explore the beauty of Chinese calligraphy. The activity began with a short lecture on basic brush techniques and the cultural significance of calligraphy. Then, members practiced writing classic poems and proverbs. We also set up a display area where participants shared their works and exchanged feedback. The highlight was a friendly competition, with everyone voting for their favorite pieces.
Through practice, we realized that standardized writing isn’t just about neat characters but also it’s a bridge connecting us to history and culture.
Best regards,
Li Ming

After the video, Baraka’s classmates approached (走近) him one by one. Each held a postcard with a picture of Tanzania.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 On the back of each card were messages of friendship and welcome. “Baraka, your home is beautiful,” one classmate wrote. “I hope to learn more about it from you.” “Happy birthday, Baraka,” another message read. “Your stories have shown me a world I never knew.” Baraka’s eyes were filled with tears as he read each message. He looked at Miss Garcia and smiled, his heart full of gratitude. “Baraka,” Miss Garcia said, “you are part of our class, and we are part of your journey. We celebrate your roots and your future together.”
From that day on, Baraka started to feel more at home. He began to share stories of Tanzania with his classmates and teach them about his culture. He even started a small Tanzanian culture club after school, where students could learn about Tanzanian music, dance, and traditional games. His smile returned, brighter than ever, as he found a way to blend his past with his present, creating a future filled with promise and friendship. The special gift from Miss Garcia not only celebrated his birthday but also paved the way for Baraka to truly belong.
