I entered the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras as a biology major and focused on my first-year coursework, aspiring to become a forensic pathologist (法医病理学家) and help give a voice to those who could no longer speak. Research wasn’t on my radar, partly because such opportunities in Puerto Rico were limited. Everything changed when Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico the following year. I felt oddly optimistic before the storm — thinking we’d get a few days off and life would go on. However, the Category 5 monster destroyed our communities, leaving people without power or water for months. Days passed before we could reconnect with loved ones. An email came two weeks after the hurricane and my honors program offered me temporary studies at Brown University — a school I’d never heard of — while our university was recovering. Though I was guilty about leaving amid the island’s crisis, my family encouraged me to go. Brown set us up with classes books, dorm rooms, and funds to purchase winter clothes. It was an introductory biology course that changed my career vision. Fascinated by the professor’s lecture, I hesitantly approached him after class. To my surprise, he immediately offered me a research position in his lab. The research opened my eyes to the important work scientists were doing to address urgent, relevant issues. I began to see a path in science beyond medicine. In a summer research program, I fell in love with microbiology. Yet doubts and guilt haunted me: how could I abandon medicine and Puerto Rico? My mentor’s words cut through the uncertainty: “There’s nothing better than doing what excites you.” Three years later, I returned to Brown as a Ph.D. student. Fittingly, my first weekend back brought a hurricane to Rhode Island. It felt oddly like home. Now in my fourth year, I understand crises can redirect us toward meaningful growth. Leaving medicine for research wasn’t failure, but finding where I could contribute most passionately. 4. Why wasn’t the author initially interested in research? A. She disliked scientific work. B. She wanted to speak for the dead. C. She had limited access to research. D. She found her coursework challenging. 5. What can we learn from the second paragraph? A. The hurricane turned out much severer than expected. B. The author’s family discouraged her from leaving Puerto Rico. C. Power and water were restored within two weeks after the storm. D. The author was offered permanent studies at an unfamiliar university. 6. What can we infer about the author’s experience at Brown? A. She got scholarships provided by Brown University. B. She found her passion through a research opportunity. C She regretted leaving Puerto Rico despite better facilities. D. She stuck to her original career goal in forensic pathology. 7. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Studying Abroad: Challenges and Opportunities B. A Hurricane’s Destruction: Losing Home and Hope C Finding Purpose Through Crisis: My Unexpected Path D. From Medicine to Microbiology: A Scientist’s Journey A few years ago, you went on a vacation with friends, creating lasting memories-walking along the beach, swimming in the sea, and enjoying breathtaking sunsets. However, the trip wasn’t all smooth sailing: long drives, food issues, and unpredictable weather. Yet, over time, you tend to remember the beautiful moments while the inconveniences fade. This is s known as rosy retrospection, a cognitive bias (认知偏见) where people recall past experiences more positively than they felt during the actual event. The phenomenon can be understood as the complex interaction of cognitive mechanisms that shape our memory processes. When recalling memories, our brains tend to focus on positive details and downplay negative aspects, which helps maintain emotional well-being. Nostalgia (怀旧) also plays a significant role, as it arouses feelings of warmth and belonging, leading us to view the past more positively. Additionally, our current emotional state and self-enhancement bias can influence how we remember past events, making them seem more favorable. While some individuals who focus more on negative experiences may be at a higher risk of mood disorders such as depression, rosy retrospection can boost our moods, increase life satisfaction, and even help us cope with difficult present circumstances by providing a sense of continuity and positive self-identity. However, rosy retrospection occasionally creates an unrealistic view of the past, which can lead people to make decisions that are not based on reality but rather on their idealized memories. It’s one of the reasons why we might repeatedly return to unhealthy relationships. The longer the time that has passed since the event, the more l ikely we are to let the good memories outweigh the bad memories and perhaps even forgive unforgivable behavior. Understanding and acknowledging this cognitive bias can be crucial for making accurate and beneficial decisions. 8. Which is a typical feature of rosy retrospection? A. Forgetting negative moments intentionally. B. Recalling past experiences repeatedly. C. Remembering adventurous trips more clearly. D. Viewing past events more positively. 9. What is the main idea of paragraph 2? A. Factors shaping memory positivity. B. Nostalgia’s emotional benefits. C. Negative experiences and mental health. D. Current emotions twisting memories. 10. What is a possible consequence of rosy retrospection? A. Weakened self-identity. B. Overfocus on current issues. C. Improved decision accuracy. D. Unrealistic views of past relationships. 11. What does the article suggest to reduce rosy retrospection’s risks? A. Prioritize future planning over memories. B. Recognize the cognitive bias consciously. C. Focus more on negative experiences. D. Confirm memories before making decisions. This can be fun: a TikTok account on which an artificial Tom Cruise wearing a purple robe sings “Tiny Dancer” to (the real) Paris Hilton holding a toy dog has attracted 5.1m followers. It is now possible to generate fake content with little more than the click of a mouse. A profound change is happening in societies that have long regarded images, video and audio as solid proof to prove that something is real. The fundamental problem is an old one. From the printing press to the internet, new technologies have made it easier to spread untruths or imitate the real. Typically, humans have used shortcuts to discover foul play, for example, AI-generated images of people have often been betrayed by their strangely behaved hands. The trouble is that the fakes are rapidly getting harder to spot since AI is improving all the time with computing power and training data becoming more abundant. Could AI-powered fake-detection software, built into web browsers, identify computer-generated content? Sadly not. Eventually AI models will probably be able to produce digital clones of a genuine recording of an event. Yet societies will also adapt to the fakers. People will learn that images, audio or video of something do not prove that it happened. Online content will no longer prove itself, so who posted something will become as important as what was posted. Assuming trustworthy sources can continue to identify themselves securely via URLs, email addresses and social -media platforms, reputation and origin will become more important than ever. The fact that people may soon struggle to spot the invisible hand of AI does not mean the marketplace of ideas is bound to fall. With time passing, the fakes that thrive will mostly be some funny ones. 12. What issue does the author present at the beginning? A. Artificial performance is popular worldwide. B. Fake content is easy to create at present time. C. Great changes brought by AI are happening now. D. Images, video and audio are solid proof to reality. 13. What do the underlined words “foul play” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. Profound changes. B. Diverse technologies. C. Fundamental problems. D. Untrustworthy contents. 14. Which factor is more significant for people to identify fakers? A. Reliable sources. B. Secure web browsers. C. Hot social media platforms. D. Powerful fake-detection softwares. 15. Which of the following best describes the author's attitude to human ideas? A. Skeptical. B. Critical. C. Dismissive. D. Positive. Sleep is crucial for physical and mental health, yet many struggle with falling or staying asleep. This fear could not be explained, but I knew that the moment I stepped near any body of water, my legs would turn to jelly (果冻). I would imagine myself drowning in the water and thrashing around (乱扑腾) helplessly. That was why I had never gone into a swimming pool until swimming became a school requirement. My school wanted all pupils to pass a swimming test, and if they could not, then they would have to attend weekly swimming lessons in school, which made me tremble. Thus, my parents signed me up for swimming lessons at the pool near my house. With great unwillingness, I attended those weekly lessons, and each one was great suffering for me. I was naturally clumsy, and my fear of water did not help at all. Every lesson, I would be spending my time thrashing about in the water, while my classmates would be swimming countless laps effortlessly and even turning over like dolphins in the water. How was I going to pass the test at this rate? In my swimming class, there was an exceptionally athletic girl. Tall and muscular, her name was Kathy. She was the best swimmer in our class and always looked at me with disdain (鄙视), especially when I thrashed about hopelessly in the water. Once, after a particularly long and hard swimming lesson, I spotted Kathy swimming gracefully in the pool. Gathering my courage, I asked gently, “Kathy, can you teach me to swim?” She stared at me coldly. It was as if I stood at the edge of an endless ocean of inadequacy, my fears appearing like dark storm clouds threatening to drown me. Yet, in that moment, a glimmer of hope flashed within me, a desperate longing for guidance and acceptance. Would Kathy’s icy exterior (外表) melt under the warmth of empathy, or would I remain forever thrashing in the sea of my own fears? To my surprise, she nodded after a few moments of silence. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “Congratulations!” Kathy said when she learnt I had passed the swimming test. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2025年春季学期高二年级期末教学质量监测 英语 (考试时间:120分钟 试卷满分:150分) 注意事项: 1. 1. Brown set us up with classes, books, dorm rooms, and funds to purchase winter clothes. C. She regretted leaving Puerto Rico despite better facilities. D. She stuck to her original career goal in forensic pathology. 7. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Studying Abroad: Challenges and Opportunities B. A Hurricane’s Destruction: Losing Home and Hope C. Finding Purpose Through Crisis: My Unexpected Path D. From Medicine to Microbiology: A Scientist’s Journey 【答案】4. C 5. A 6. B 7. 根据第一段中“Research wasn’t on my radar, partly because such opportunities in Puerto Rico were limited.(研究不在我的考虑范围内,部分原因是在波多黎各这样的机会有限)”可知,作者最初对研究不感兴趣是因为她获得研究机会的途径有限。 根据第二段中“I felt oddly optimistic before the storm — thinking we’d get a few days off and life would go on. However, the Category 5 monster destroyed our communities, leaving people without power or water for months.(风暴来临前我莫名地乐观——以为我们能放几天假,生活还会继续。然而,这场五级飓风摧毁了我们的社区,让人们几个月都没有水电供应)”可知,飓风的破坏力比作者预期的要严重得多。故选A项。 根据第三段中“Fascinated by the professor’s lecture, I hesitantly approached him after class. To my surprise, he immediately offered me a research position in his lab. The research opened my eyes to the important work scientists were doing to address urgent, relevant issues.(我被教授的讲座深深吸引,下课后我犹豫地走向他。令我惊讶的是,他立刻给了我一个在他实验室做研究的职位。这项研究让我了解到科学家们为解决紧迫相关问题所做的重要工作)”以及第四段中“I began to see a path in science beyond medicine. Leaving medicine for research wasn’t failure, but finding where I could contribute most passionately.(现在我读四年级了,我明白危机可以引导我们走向有意义的成长。从医学转向研究不是失败,而是找到了我最能投入热情做出贡献的领域)”可知,作者通过这次危机找到了新的目标和方向。所以C选项“Finding Purpose Through Crisis: My Unexpected Path(在危机中找到目标:我意想不到的道路)”能准确概括文章主旨,是文章最佳标题。故选C项。 A few years ago, you went on a vacation with friends, creating lasting memories-walking along the beach, swimming in the sea, and enjoying breathtaking sunsets. D 9. A 10. D 11. 根据第一段中的“This is known as rosy retrospection, a cognitive bias (认知偏见) where people recall past experiences more positively than they felt during the actual event.(这种现象被称为‘玫瑰色回忆’(rosy retrospection),这是一种认知偏见,人们回忆过去的经历时会比实际经历时更积极)”可知,其典型特征是比实际体验更积极地看待过去的事件,即更积极地回顾过去的事件。 根据第二段“The phenomenon can be understood as the complex interaction of cognitive mechanisms that shape our memory processes. When recalling memories, our brains tend to focus on positive details and downplay negative aspects, which helps maintain emotional well-being. Nostalgia (怀旧) also plays a significant role, as it arouses feelings of warmth and belonging, leading us to view the past more positively. Additionally, our current emotional state and self-enhancement bias can influence how we remember past events, making them seem more favorable.(这种现象可以被理解为我们记忆过程中的复杂认知机制的相互作用。 故选A项。 由第四段中的“However, rosy retrospection occasionally creates an unrealistic view of the past, which can lead people to make decisions that are not based on reality but rather on their idealized memories. It’s one of the reasons why we might repeatedly return to unhealthy relationships.(然而,玫瑰色回忆有时会使人产生一种对过去的不切实际的看法,这可能导致人们做出并非基于现实而是基于理想化记忆的决定。这也是我们可能会反复回到不健康关系的原因之一)”可知,玫瑰色回忆可能导致对过去关系的不切实际的看法。故选D项。 【11题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“Understanding and acknowledging this cognitive bias can be crucial for making accurate and beneficial decisions.(理解和承认这种认知偏见对于做出准确且有益的决策至关重要)”可知,作者建议有意识地认识这种认知偏见来减少玫瑰色回忆引发的风险。故选B项。 This can be fun: a TikTok account on which an artificial Tom Cruise wearing a purple robe sings “Tiny Dancer” to (the real) Paris Hilton holding a toy dog has attracted 5.1m followers. A. Skeptical. B. Critical. C. Dismissive. D. Positive. 12. B 13. D 14. A 15. Nowadays, our oceans are facing severe pollution. Industrial waste, plastic garbage and oil spills are making the ocean environment worse and worse, which is endangering countless marine creatures. It goes without saying that oceans are of crucial significance to us. Not only do they provide abundant food resources, but also they play a key role in regulating the earth’s climate. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文: To my surprise, she nodded after a few moments of silence. From then on, Kathy stayed back for about an hour after every swimming lesson to coach me. She taught me how to propel myself forward in the water and I gradually gained confidence in the pool. Slowly but surely, I improved under her guidance and encouragement. Four months later, it was time for me to take my swimming test. I jumped into the pool and followed all of Kathy’s advice. I swam gracefully, just like a fish, and passed the test with flying colours. “Congratulations!” Kathy said when she learnt I had passed the swimming test. I threw my arms around her and hugged her tightly. “Thank you! You’re a wonderful friend! If it had not been for you, I would not have done so well!” I exclaimed. Since then, our friendship has blossomed. We met frequently to have fun with each other, sharing both joy and sorrow. Surprisingly, I grew to love the water. A friend like Kathy is hard to come by. She has a heart of gold and I will definitely treasure our precious friendship. 词汇激活 行为类 ①进步:improve/make progress ②拥抱:hug/embrace ③玩得开心:have fun/enjoy oneself 情绪类 ①自信:gain confidence/become confident ②惊讶:surprisingly/astinoshingly 【点睛】[高分句型1] If it had not been for you, I would not have done so well!(由if引导的虚拟条件句) [高分句型2] We met frequently to have fun with each other, sharing both joy and sorrow.(由现分词作状语) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
