In April 2022, Uday Bhatia, a student from Delhi, India, visited Bichpuri as a volunteer for a 2-day programme. During his stay, he found that the biggest problem the local children faced was repeated power cuts, which made it difficult for them to study. That left a deep impact on Uday.
Uday came back to Delhi and took immediate action to approach the problem. He soon understood that residents of villages like Bichpuri couldn’t afford electrical devices. He wanted to find and develop a solution to rural India’s power shortage. After 24 attempts, the 18-year-old built the solution — Uday Electric — a bulb that can offer a power backup (备用) of almost 10 hours in case of a power cut.
Explaining how the bulb works, Uday states that the technology used is very simple. “When the bulb is connected to a power source, energy gets stored in the battery. When the power supply is cut off, the bulb uses the energy stored in the battery to give out light,” he explains.
At first, he established a bulb with a four-hour backup. But he wanted to provide a backup of 8-10 hours. Thanks to his love of computer science, he developed a way to change the bulb’s brightness, increasing the backup time without increasing the size of the battery. The bulb now comes with settings 1o change the brightness.
Uday sold each bulb at only 250 rupees (3 dollars) and has so far sold over 7,000 units in many remote villages. But what Uday did went beyond business; he donated 950 units to houses in the poorest areas through a non-governmental organisation, bringing joy to those living without electricity. “When I saw the joy on people’s faces when their houses were lit up, I felt on top of the world. No feeling could come close to it,” says Uday.
Uday won the Diana Award 2023, which honours “remarkable young people selflessly creating positive social change”. He wishes to bring bulb to as many houses as he can in the coming years.
24.What inspired Uday to invent Uday Electric?
A.An experiment he did at school. B.A volunteering experience.
C.His interest in computer science. D.The power cuts he faced every day.
25.What do we know about Uday Electric?
A.It is small and solar-powered. B.It just can’t adjust the brightness.
C.It can work without batteries. D.It is affordable and effective.
26.Which of the following words can best describe Uday?
A.Honest and confident. B.Humorous and generous.
C.Determined and warm-hearted. D.Outgoing and independent.
27.What is the best title for the text?
A.Teen’s bright idea lights rural India B.A solution to end India’s power shortage
C.A young Indian changemaker giving back D.The inspiring journey of a teenage Indian’s success
【答案】24.B 25.D 26.C 27.A
根据第一段“In April 2022, Uday Bhatia, a student from Delhi, India, visited Bichpuri as a volunteer for a 2-day programme. During his stay, he found that the biggest problem the local children faced was repeated power cuts, which made it difficult for them to study.(2022年4月,来自印度德里的学生乌代·巴蒂亚作为志愿者访问了比奇普里,参加了一个为期两天的项目。在他逗留期间,他发现当地孩子面临的最大问题是反复停电,这使他们难以学习)”;第二段中“Uday came back to Delhi and took immediate action to address the problem.(乌代回到德里,立即采取行动解决这个问题)”和“After 24 attempts, the 18-year-old built the solution — Uday Electric — a bulb that can offer a power backup (备用) of almost 10 hours in case of a power cut.(经过24次尝试,这位18岁的年轻人终于找到了解决方案——Uday Electric——这种灯泡可以在停电的情况下提供近10小时的备用电力)”可知,是Uday的一次志愿者经历启发了他发明Uday Electric。故选B项。
根据第五段“Uday sold each bulb at only 250 rupees (3 dollars) and has so far sold over 7,000 units in many remote villages.(乌代每个灯泡的售价仅为250卢比(合3美元),到目前为止,在许多偏远村庄已经售出了7000多只)”可知,Uday Electric的销量可观,说明乌代发明的灯泡是有效的,且价格便宜。故选D项。
根据第二段“After 24 attempts, the 18-year-old built the solution — Uday Electric — a bulb that can offer a power backup (备用) of almost 10 hours in case of a power cut.(经过24次尝试,这位18岁的年轻人终于找到了解决方案——Uday Electric——这种灯泡可以在停电的情况下提供近10小时的备用电力)”以及倒数第二段“But what Uday did went beyond business; he donated 950 units to houses in the poorest areas through a non-governmental organisation, bringing joy to those living without electricity. “When I saw the joy on people’s faces when their houses were lit up, I felt on top of the world. No feeling could come close to it,” says Uday.(但乌代所做的不仅仅是生意;他通过一个非政府组织向最贫困地区的家庭捐赠了950套住房,给那些没有电的人带来了快乐。“当我看到人们的房子被点亮时脸上的喜悦时,我感到高兴极了。没有任何感觉可以接近它,”乌代说)”可知,Uday坚定且热心。故选C项。
27.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其结合第二段中“He soon understood that residents of villages like Bichpuri couldn’t afford electrical devices. He wanted to find and develop a solution to rural India’s power shortage. After 24 attempts, the 18-year-old built the solution — Uday Electric — a bulb that can offer a power backup (备用) of almost 10 hours in case of a power cut.(他很快就明白,像比奇普里这样的村庄的居民买不起电器。 故选A项。
C
Research has shown that physical appearance has a big impact on a person’s mental health, social interactions and opportunities in life. Attractive people often benefit from social biases (偏见), while those seen as less attractive may face challenges like lower confidence, social exclusion and fewer opportunities.
A study done in 2022 showed how society’s views on appearance influence interactions. Participants were shown photos of people with different looks and asked to rate their intelligence, likability and trustworthiness. The results were clear: people considered more attractive received higher ratings in all categories. Furthermore, attractive people were more likely to be described as confident and capable, while less attractive individuals were often marginalized or associated with negative stereotypes This bias was especially noticeable in group settings, where attractive people were more likely to be included and listened to during discussions.
The emotional impact of this bias is also significant. Attractive people often have higher self-respect because they get more praises and positive feedback. However, this advantage comes with pressure, as attractive individuals may feel stressed about maintaining their appearance, leading to anxiety as they age. On the other hand, less attractive people often struggle with feelings of low self-worth, which contribute to depression and anxiety.
The workplace is also affected by these biases. Research shows that attractive people are more likely to be hired, promoted and earn higher salaries. Employers often naturally link attractiveness to ability, confidence and leadership qualities. This creates a disadvantage for people who don’t meet traditional beauty standards, forcing them to work harder to gain recognition.
To address these biases, researchers emphasize the importance of promoting inclusivity and challenging conventional social concepts. By encouraging self-acceptance and appreciating different kinds of beauty, society can create a fairer environment that values individuals for their character and abilities, not just their appearance.
28.What does the underlined word “marginalized” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Blamed. B.Disvauled. C.Included. D.Abused.
29.What impacts can appearance bias have on people?
A.Employers value looks over abilities.
B.Attractive people have better mental health.
C.Less attractive people are less likely to succeed.
D.Both attractive and less attractive face emotional challenges.
30.How can society create a fairer environment?
A.By overlooking outer beauty.
B.By meeting social expectations.
C.By advocating enjoying diverse beauty.
D.By applying universal beauty standards.
31.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To call for a fairer and more inclusive society.
B.To explain how appearance impacts individual life.
C.To address the psychological effects of appearance.
D.To argue that only attractive people can succeed in life.
根据第二段“people considered more attractive received higher ratings in all categories. Furthermore, attractive people were more likely to be described as confident and capable, while less attractive individuals were often … or associated with negative stereotypes
根据第三段“The emotional impact of this bias is also significant. Attractive people often have higher self-respect because they get more praises and positive feedback. However, this advantage comes with pressure, as attractive individuals may feel stressed about maintaining their appearance, leading to anxiety as they age. On the other hand, less attractive people often struggle with feelings of low self-worth, which contribute to depression and anxiety.(这种偏见的情感影响也很显著。有魅力的人通常自尊心更强,因为他们会得到更多的赞扬和积极的反馈。然而,这种优势也伴随着压力,因为有魅力的人可能会因为要保持自己的外表而感到压力,随着年龄的增长,这会导致焦虑。另一方面,不太有魅力的人常常与低自尊感作斗争,这会导致抑郁和焦虑。)”可知,有魅力和不太有魅力的人都面临情感挑战。故选D项。
30.细节理解题。根据最后一段“To address these biases, researchers emphasize the importance of promoting inclusivity and challenging conventional social concepts. By encouraging self-acceptance and appreciating different kinds of beauty, society can create a fairer environment that values individuals for their character and abilities, not just their appearance.(为了解决这些偏见,研究人员强调了促进包容性和挑战传统社会观念的重要性。
D
The Center for Digital Thriving (繁荣) , a new research and innovation center, was opened at Harvard Graduate School of Education. Its work seeks to change understanding of how young people and everyone else can thrive in a technology-filled world. The Center was founded by researchers Carrie James and Emily Weinstein, who have worked for more than a decade to explore the emerging (新兴的) digital landscape that young people are facing today and to answer questions about what it’s like for teens to grow up with social media.
“We can’t get around the simple truth that technology greatly shapes teens’ experiences today,” says Emily. “Technology is hugely important to students’ lives, learning, relationships and development. It matters for their well-being (幸福) and sense of self.”
Emily and Carrie explored these issues most recently in their book Behind Their Screens, which documents just how much adults have been missing in their understanding of how teens interact with the screens that surround them. “The main feature of our research has been slowing down and really listening to teens as they talk about growing up with today’s technologies,” says Carrie. “Putting teens’ voices and stories at the center has been transformative.”
The book shows adults are worried about teens and their screen time, noting that parents need to get rid of the “us-versus-them” mindset. Instead, learning how to take an “us-and-them” approach helps build connection and healthy tech habits. Emily advises against strict rules about social media use or blaming the current adolescent mental health problems entirely on social media or devices. Families, she explains, would be better off if parents discussed their child’s social media use in more positive ways. Be more of a coach, she says, and less of a judge.
In their previous research, Emily and Carrie found that text messages that were marked “read” without replies from the receiver were a common anxiety source for teens. Young people today need better access to the resources that can help them navigate the ups and downs of adolescence in the digital age. The Center is not only providing those resources but putting them where young people are, creating opportunities for all young people to thrive as technology continues to develop.

【答案】32.B 33.A 34.C 35.C
根据第二段““We can’t get around the simple truth that technology greatly shapes teens’ experiences today,” says Emily. “Technology is hugely important to students’ lives, learning, relationships and development. It matters for their well-being (幸福) and sense of self.” (“我们无法回避一个简单的事实:技术正在深刻塑造着当代青少年的生活体验,”Emily说道。“技术对学生的生活、学习、人际关系和成长发展都至关重要,它影响着他们的幸福感和自我认知。”)”可知,技术影响当代青少年的生活体验,对学生的方方面面都很重要。由此可知,技术在很大程度上影响着青少年的成长。故选B项。
33.细节理解题。根据第三段中Carrie所说的话“The main feature of our research has been slowing down and really listening to teens as they talk about growing up with today’s technologies (我们研究的核心特点在于放慢节奏,真正倾听青少年讲述他们在当今科技环境下的成长经历)”和“Putting teens’ voices and stories at the center has been transformative. (将青少年的心声和故事置于研究核心,这一做法带来了根本性的转变)”可知,两人研究的特殊之处在于它关注的是年轻一代的想法。故选A项。
根据第四段中“Families, she explains, would be better off if parents discussed their child’s social media use in more positive ways. Be more of a coach, she says, and less of a judge. (她解释道,如果家长能以更积极的方式与孩子讨论社交媒体的使用,家庭关系将会更加和谐。她这样建议,多当教练,少当裁判)”可知,Emily建议成年人积极引导青少年的网络活动。故选C项。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“In their previous research, Emily and Carrie found that text messages that were marked “read” without replies from the receiver were a common anxiety source for teens. Young people today need better access to the resources that can help them navigate the ups and downs of adolescence in the digital age.
We live in a switched-on world in which it’s almost unthinkable to be without social media for so much as a day. The colorful images, interesting videos, bite-sized info, easy-to-read stories, viewing other people’s lives ... All is designed to keep us addicted. 36 An increasing number of studies indicate that social media can have a negative impact on our relationships IRL (that’s “in real life” for non-techies). The good news is that you don’t have to go backwards to avoid the dangers of social media. 37
Set time limits
Try the Pomodoro Technique. 38 Using this method, you break your workday into 25-minute periods separated by five-minute breaks. Use an ordinary kitchen timer (to get away from using your phone) to set limits and schedule an activity to do afterwards. Then when the timer rings, step away from your device and turn off those notifications.
39
The infinite scroll (无限滚动), as it’s termed by developers, is specifically designed to keep you aimlessly looking at news feeds, passively taking in everything you see. Before you go online, decide what you’re going for and stick to it. In this focused way you can go straight to what you want to see without mindlessly scrolling for things that don’t support your intentions.
Avoid comparison
40 This famous saying has never been truer than when we see other people’s seemingly “perfect lives” online. It can leave us feeling that we’re simply not good enough. Although comparing ourselves to others is normal human behavior, remember that people’s social media pages are not a true reflection of their real life.
A.Scroll freely.
B.Stay focused.
C.Comparison is the thief of joy.
D.However, there is a darker side.
E.True happiness comes from inner peace.
F.This time-management strategy breaks your time up into periods.
G.Instead, you can free yourself from dependence but still enjoy the positive side.
36.根据上文“All is designed to keep us addicted. (越来越多的研究表明,社交媒体会对我们在现实生活中的关系产生负面影响)”可知,上文提到社交媒体的设计让我们上瘾,下文提到社交媒体对现实生活的负面影响,所以此处应是一个转折,指出社交媒体有不好的一面。D选项“However, there is a darker side. (然而,也有不好的一面)”承上启下,符合语境。故选D项。
37.根据上文“The good news is that you don’t have to go backwards to avoid the dangers of social media. (好消息是,你不必回到过去来避免社交媒体的危险)”可知,此处应提出一个既能避免社交媒体危险又能享受其好处的方法。G选项“Instead, you can free yourself from dependence but still enjoy the positive side. (相反,你可以摆脱依赖,但仍然可以享受积极的一面)”承接上文,并引出下文对三种方法的介绍。故选G项。
38.根据上文“Try the Pomodoro Technique. (尝试一下番茄工作法)”以及下文“Using this method, you break your workday into 25-minute periods separated by five-minute breaks. (使用这种方法,你可以把工作日分成25分钟的工作时段,每个时段之间有5分钟的休息时间)”可知,此处应是对番茄工作法的解释。F选项“This time-management strategy breaks your time up into periods. (这种时间管理策略把你的时间分成几个时段)”解释说明了番茄工作法是将时间分成几个时段的。故选F项。
39.根据设空位置和下文“Before you go online, decide what you’re going for and stick to it. In this focused way you can go straight to what you want to see without mindlessly scrolling for things that don’t support your intentions. (在你上网之前,决定你要做什么,并坚持下去。以这种专注的方式,你可以直接看到你想要看的东西,而不会漫无目的地浏览那些不符合你意图的东西)”可知,本段主要讲述的是上网前要确定目标,保持专注。B选项“Stay focused. (保持专注)”准确概括了下文内容,可作为本段小标题。故选B项。
40.根据本段小标题“Avoid comparison (避免比较)”以及下文“This famous saying has never been truer than when we see other people’s seemingly “perfect lives” online.(当我们在网上看到别人看似 “完美的生活” 时,这句名言从未像现在这样真实可信)”可知,空处应提到了一句和攀比有关的名言。C选项“Comparison is the thief of joy. (攀比是偷走快乐的小偷)”与上下文衔接紧密,符合语境。故选C项。

第二节(共10小题;每小题1. 5分, 满分15分)
阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或所给单词的正确形式。
For more than 3,500 years the mummified remains of the Xiaohe people lay 56 (disturbed) in a desert cemetery in Xinjiang in western China. Then, in 1979, a team of archaeologists got their hands on them. Among the treasures they dug up were the 57 (mystery) and also the oldest preserved cheese in the world.
Writing in the journal Cell on September 25th, a team of researchers led by Fu Qiaomei from the Chinese Academy of Sciences now reports the first genetic analysis of the sour cheese. Their results paint a picture of a rich Bronze Age culture that 58 (exchange) animals with other peoples and may have helped spread cheese around East Asia. Why they were buried with the stuff, though, remains imperfectly 59 (understand).
During their analysis, Dr Fu’s team identified DNA from a goat 60 milk went into the cheeses, before comparing it with 185 previously sequenced goat mitochondrial genomes. The genetic profile of the Xiaohe goat was similar to 61 of goats belonging to ancient Eurasian steppe (大草原) people, meaning the Xiaohe may have learned animal husbandry (农牧业) and cheese-making from them.
The authors speculate that the cheese was an attractive alternative to raw milk, 62 is 63 (rich) in lactose (乳糖) to which many modern-day Asian people are intolerant. But it is possible that it was the milk drink, rather than the cheese, 64 was the main attraction, says Paul Kindstedt, a cheese chemist and historian from the University of Vermont.
Dr Kindstedt thinks the genetic analysis of the 3,500-year-old sour cheese is the first example 65 (cast) light on the ancient Chinese culture and reveal secrets about numerous other cultures.
56.undisturbed 57.mysterious 58.exchanged 59.understood 60.whose 61.that 62.which 63.richer 64.that 65.to cast
exchange(交换)是定语从句中谓语动词,与主语that(即先行词a rich Bronze Age culture)之间是主动关系,根据语境可知,此处描述的是过去发生的事情,应用一般过去时态。故填exchanged。
remains是系动词,understand(理解,明白)与主语“Why they were buried with the stuff”之间是被动关系,用过去分词作表语。故填understood。
“____ milk went into the cheeses”是定语从句,修饰先行词a goat,关系词将其代入从句中作定语,指“山羊的”,用表示所属关系的关系代词whose引导该从句。故填whose。
此处用that指代前面的“The genetic profile”,避免重复。故填that。
故填which。
此处是强调句结构“it is/was + 被强调部分 + that/who + 其他部分”,被强调部分是原句主语“the milk drink, rather than the cheese”,句子其他部分用that引导。故填that。
“(cast) light on the ancient Chinese culture and reveal secrets about numerous other cultures”作后置定语,修饰名词example, cast是非谓语动词,又因名词example前有序数词first修饰,用不定式作后置定语。故填to cast。

Mr. George had raised his grandson Alex alone since Alex’s parents passed away. With rough hands and a heart full of love, he’d fixed countless scraped (擦伤) knees and listened to Alex’s dreams with steady patience.
Now, as Alex threw his backpack onto the old sofa, Mr. George’s blue eyes followed him tiredly. “Emma’s dad made her a cool specially-made bike,” Alex complained, watching his grandfather repair his soccer socks with shaky hands. The old clay piggy bank between them held only a few coins, making soft sounds. Mr. George’s small pension (抚恤金) was just enough for basic food, and the sad look in his eyes when he said “I’ll ... try” made Alex’s chest hurt. Without another word, Alex rushed out, ignoring the reused calendar stuck behind the fridge, its pages marked with red circles.
One cold morning, as Alex took a shortcut along a path with classmates, he suddenly stopped. There was Mr. George, halfway inside a recycling dustbin, carefully picking up an old bicycle chain. His classmates started laughing. “Look at the waste collector!” Jake shouted. Jessica took photos with her phone. Alex felt terrible shame. His face turned red. “Stop making me feel bad!” he yelled angrily, pushing away Mr. George’s reaching hand — the same hand that had held him during his first unsteady bike rides.
Weeks of cold silence followed. Every morning, Alex found his lunchbox filled with extra sandwiches and snacks, but he never ate them. Every night, soft knocking noises came from the garage, but he wouldn’t check.
On his 17th birthday, Alex woke to find a shoebox wrapped in old pages. Inside lay a shiny metal bicycle bell, carved with small gears (齿轮), and a note. The note said, “Dear Alex, I’m sorry I couldn’t buy you the bike you wanted. I started collecting recyclables to save up, but I never meant to embarrass you. You’re the most precious thing in my life. Every ride needs a sound. This bell will ring when you’re ready to listen. Forgive my old-fashioned ways.” After seeing the words, Alex was reduced to tears, with a stream of warmth and regret across his body.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Alex rushed outside and saw the special bike made from used metal against the fence.

That very night, Mr. George’s serious coughs woke Alex.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Alex rushed outside and saw the special bike made from used metal against the fence. The handlebars shone brightly, showing how carefully his grandfather had polished them. Eager to thank Mr. George, he turned towards the house. But through the kitchen window, he froze. His grandfather sat at the table, one hand bandaged, struggling to take bites of a sandwich, with a bottle of painkillers nearby. Alex’s throat tightened. All this time, his anger had blinded him to the pain his grandfather endured — all for him. He knew he had to make things right.
That very night, Mr. George’s serious coughs woke Alex. The old man lay pale and weak in bed. Without a moment’s delay, Alex helped him onto the bike. As they rode to the hospital, the bicycle bell rang softly, like a sweet song. At the hospital and in the days that followed, Alex took good care of his grandfather, cooking meals and chatting with him. The scrap-metal bike, once a source of embarrassment, now stood as a symbol of their love — proving that the most precious gifts are those born from sacrifice and heart.

A.Honest and confident. B.Humorous and generous.

32.What message does paragraph 2 convey?
A.Technology helps improve students’ learning.
B.Technology affects teens’ growth to a great degree.
C.Teens should balance their online and offline time.
D.Adults should pay more attention to teens’ happiness.
33.What is special about Emily and Carrie’s research?
A.It focuses on the younger generation’s thoughts.
B.It observes the development of a number of teens.
C.It shows technology’s impact on teens’ mental health.
D.It stresses adults’ role in teens’ technology experiences.
34.What does Emily suggest adults do?
A.Set a tight time limit on teens’ phone use.
B.Exercise parental authority all the time.
C.Guide teens’ online activities positively.
D.Encourage teens to stay away from their smartphones.
35.Why does the author mention the issue in the last paragraph?
A.To show mental problems during adolescence.
B.To encourage researchers to study teens’ mental health.
C.To present the necessity to provide help for teens.
D.To prove the resources shared by the Center are helpful.
