He didn’t have much money, just some small savings he had earned while working in a bookstore. Life was hard at first, but my grandfather stayed determined. He opened a small gift shop opposite an Italian restaurant in the heart of the city. As time went on, the shop grew popular. By the time he turned 50, he had opened four shops across the city. He always said that hard work was the key to his success. When he retired, the business passed to my uncle, David. Then, with the same passion, my uncle opened the fifth shop. Now, our family business is well-known in the city. I am now in college. Once I graduate, I will be only five years younger than when my grandfather started his business at the age of 29, and I plan to join the family business then.

When Anthony Madu dances, he “feels free”.
At 14 years old, the Nigerian ballet dancer’s life became the subject of the Disney documentary (纪录片) “Madu”. Before the film came out, Madu spoke in a news program to discuss his story. In 2020, at just 11 years old, Anthony went viral after his dance teacher posted a video of his doing pirouettes (单脚尖旋转) barefoot in the rain in the street. The video caught the attention of director Matthew Ogens. Then he invited Anthony to be a member in his company. “I was ready for it,” Anthony says of sharing his story with the world. “But then at the same time, kind of scared because it’s something that’s going to be out into the world and people watching it.”
Despite being made fun of by some people for dancing ballet and the worry from his parents, Anthony continued and his family eventually accepted his dream. They relocated to a new neighborhood so he could get formal training.
First, he received a scholarship offer from the American Ballet Theatre. Later, he earned a scholarship from the famous Elmhurst Ballet School, where he’s presently studying.
Anthony’s determination to become a professional ballet dancer was soon challenged. During a dance class, Madu told an instructor that he had trouble seeing and it’s later showed that he’s largely blind in his right eye. Despite feeling that his eye may “end” his career, Madu wants viewers to be inspired by his story. “What I want people to take away is that no matter what they want to do in life, they shouldn’t let any bad comments and people get in the way,” he says. “Because at the end of the day, it’s their choice, it’s what they want to do, and they should just really go for it. Never give up.”
24. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “viral” in paragraph 2?
A. ill B. frightened C. famous D. impatient
25. How did Anthony feel about filming the documentary “Madu”?
A. Cheerful and positive. B. Eager but nervous.
C. Confident but modest. D. Doubtful and uninterested.
26. What kind of help did Anthony’s parents give him?
A. Ask the teacher to raise money for Anthony B. Accepted Anthony’s dream.
C. Relocated to a new neighborhood. D. Both B and C.
27. What message does Anthony want readers to get through his story?
A. Keep firm against the pressure to meet others’ expectations.
B. Pursue your dreams and ignore bad comments.
C. Stick to your dream regardless of your physical disabilities.
D. Be open-minded to bad comments.
C 25. B 26. D 27. B
原文“In 2020, at just 11 years old, Anthony went viral after his dance teacher posted a video of his doing pirouettes (单脚尖旋转) barefoot in the rain in the street. The video caught the attention of director Matthew Ogens. (2020年,年仅11岁的Anthony在他的舞蹈老师发布了一段他在雨中赤脚在街上做脚尖旋转的视频后,迅速 。这段视频引起了导演马修·奥根斯的注意。)”提到Anthony的视频引起了导演的注意。因此,可推断该视频迅速走红,所以“viral”在此处的意思是“广泛传播的”或“爆红的”,与“famous”(著名的)意思最接近。故选C。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段““I was ready for it,” Anthony says of sharing his story with the world. “But then at the same time, kind of scared because it’s something that’s going to be out into the world and people watching it.” (“我已经准备好了,” Anthony在谈到与世界分享他的故事时说。“但与此同时,我又有点害怕,因为这是一件即将被公之于众的事情,人们会看着它。”)”表明他既准备好了(渴望分享故事),又感到害怕(紧张)。因此,B选项“渴望但紧张”最符合文意。故选B。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Despite being made fun of by some people for dancing ballet and the worry from his parents, Anthony continued and his family eventually accepted his dream. They relocated to a new neighborhood so he could get formal training. (尽管因为跳芭蕾而被一些人取笑,父母也很担心,但Anthony坚持了下来,他的家人最终接受了他的梦想。他们搬到了一个新的社区,这样他就可以接受正式的培训。)”可知父母最终接受了他的梦想(对应B选项),并且为了让他接受正规训练,全家搬到了新社区(对应C选项)。因此,D选项(B和C的结合)是正确答案。故选D。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““What I want people to take away is that no matter what they want to do in life, they shouldn’t let any bad comments and people get in the way,” he says. “Because at the end of the day, it’s their choice, it’s what they want to do, and they should just really go for it. Never give up.” (他说:“我希望人们学到的是,无论他们想在生活中做什么,他们都不应该让任何不好的评论和人阻碍他们。” “因为在一天结束的时候,这是他们的选择,这是他们想做的,他们应该真的去做。永远不要放弃。” )”可知Anthony强调“不要让他人的负面评论阻碍自己,坚持追求梦想”,所以B选项(追求梦想,无视负面)最贴合。故选B。
C
When visiting a doctor in the future, you can expect to be accompanied by a virtual version of yourself. This so-called digital twin will be a working model of your body that can be shown onto a physician’s computer screen. Updated with your latest important signs, it will help the doctor make an right diagnosis (诊断) and provide personalized treatments for the patients. No matter how unreal this might seem, the researchers at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) already use computer simulations (模拟) of the hearts of patients to test different treatments for a heart disorder. It would be far too dangerous to experiment this way on someone’s real heart.
Digital twins are starting to be seen everywhere. They can not only monitor the health of jet engines on airliners, but also help carmakers spend fewer years on the development of new models by simulating test drives and crashes. All this is being powered by recent progress in artificial intelligence (AI), which gives twins the ability to make predictions about their physical counterparts (对应的事物), and adjust themselves based on new information.
Digital twins make it easier for humans to solve challenging problems, allowing people to have a look into the future. For businesses, this should mean better designs and operations. For society, the promise is also fascinating: personalized health care, and ways to prevent the earth from environmental disasters.
Could these virtual twins go out of control? They might if they are programmed badly. Digital twins will take in mountains of data some of it wrong and much of it causing concerns about privacy. Yet those risks are a natural part of technological progress. The appearance of the digital mirror world will lead to new questions, but its good sides are already easy to see.
28. Which of the following is NOT talked as a use of digital twins?
A. Personalizing healthcare treatments. B. Simulating heart conditions for safer medical testing.
C. Predicting weather patterns for agriculture. D. Improving car model development.
29. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. Digital twins can replace human doctors in the future.
B. AI enables digital twins to control, predict and adapt.
C. Car crashes are now completely simulated to avoid real accidents.
D. Jet engines require digital twins to function properly.
30. What is the author’s attitude toward digital twins?
A. Fully supportive without doubt.
B. Doubtful due to privacy risks.
C. Balanced, admitting both good effects and challenges.
D. Indifferent to technological progress.
31. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Dangers of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine
B. How Jet Engines Use Computer Simulations
C. The History of Heart Disease Treatments
D. Digital Twins: A Groundbreaking Mirror World with Challenges and Benefits
C 29. B 30. C 31. D

You are with me once in a while for nearly 20 years now. You never said why you chose me. I didn’t even think I was your type. I had always thought you went for the worrier, and the unadventurous. But I am an outgoing girl. Maybe you were impressed with my demanding teaching career. Your past lovers come from all walks of life. I see them shout under your pressure.
I often keep you a secret. I refuse to let my identity be swept up in yours. Besides, sometimes when people talk about you, what they are concerned about is how they know you, too and the ways to be relaxed and get away from anxiety.
I am writing now because I have noticed that we are growing apart. So there are things I want to say. I know my daily exercise annoys you; you’re nowhere to be seen when I’m reading our favourite books. I’ve noticed that you’re turned off by the way I’m eating fruits and vegetables. When I take the time to chat with a stranger or a friend, you often storm off. So I’ve decided it is time to start making plans of my own, despite not knowing what yours are.
I know we will always be in touch. You’ll visit me when I least expect it. If we do eventually break up for good, you should know you have changed me for the better. Because of you, I see that life is a unique gift to be handled with care and patience. So learn to keep you at bay by getting away from stress.
In short, appreciate you for what you have brought into my life but I ask you to give me the distance I need to learn the lessons you have taught.
32. The word “you” talked in the passage refers to ________.

A. To describe a romantic relationship that lasted for 20 years.
B. To think about the effect of stress and the decision to manage it.
C. To blame people who fail to handle anxiety properly.
D. To explain how to keep a healthy lifestyle through diet and exercise.

Yesterday my parents were heading off on a little holiday and I took them to the train station. Upon arrival, it rained heavily.
I got their luggage out and helped my parents to the elevator and sent them on their way. As they were entering, an elderly man was exiting. We walked back to the entrance and I said hello and hoped he had arrangements to get where he needed to go. He was going to wait 20 minutes for the bus.
I asked where he was going and it turned out he was heading to the same town I was, just a 15-minute drive away. I offered him a lift which he gratefully accepted. We had a lovely chat on the way and I learned some of his history and the fact that he was 87 and heading to the nursing home (养老院) where he had just put his beloved wife in last week.
He was too old to drive car by himself, so he had to rely on public transport. A tear fell down his cheek as he told me about his wife. I managed to hold it together but barely. As I dropped him to the entrance of the nursing home, I gave him the bunch of flowers I had in the car which I had prepared for my mother.
Tears rolled down his cheeks and he thanked me from the bottom of his heart. As I made my way back to my car, I totally lost control of my emotions and cried like a baby.
I was very glad to be able to help him in some way. I just might visit them on Friday after my class was over. It would be his wife’s birthday.

Days later, I went to the nursing home to see the man and his wife. I bought some gifts, mainly clothes, food and drinks. I especially bought a big cake for the old man’s wife for her birthday. When I arrived, I was warmly welcomed by the old couple. They treated me like family because they had no other relatives to celebrate their birthday. I brought out my gifts and we enjoyed the food and cake together. We talked happily over the dinner and congratulated the old lady on her birthday.
This experience encouraged me to celebrate other seniors’ (老年人的) birthdays. I found that it is the elderly people who desire care most. I decided to carry out my plan in this nursing home. I visited the director of the nursing home to explain my plan and he supported me. I then asked for the birthday information of the old people there. Based on the information, I sent a birthday cake to each old person. Now I continue to devote myself to the well-being of senior citizens, as care-giving is so meaningful.

Hi, my name is alex, and I want to share the story of my grandfather, Michael. He came to london after graduation. He didn't have much money, just some small savings he had earned while working in a bookstore. Life was hard at first, but my grandfather stayed determined. He opened a small gift shop opposite an italian restaurant in the heart of the city. As time went on, the shop group popular. By the time he turned fifty, he had opened four shops across the city. He always said that hard work was the key to his success. When he retired, the business passed to my uncle David. Then, with the same passion, my uncle opened the fifth shop. Now our family business is well known in the city. I am now in college. Once I graduate, I will be only five years Younger than when my grandfather started his business at the age of twenty nine, and I planned to to join the family business then.

Digital twins will take in mountains of data, some of it wrong and much of it causing concerns about privacy.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
