The Song-dynasty poet Li Qingzhao is considered one of the greatest poets in Chinese history. The fact that she was a woman, working at a time when women were discouraged from writing or publishing, makes this honor all the more astonishing. What I didn’t know, when I first started translating her in college, was that her poetry would take me on a decade-long journey and redefine my own voice as a writer.
I stumbled across the idea of translation by chance. I was an undergraduate at Wellesley when a fellow student was putting together an anthology (选集) of translations from around the world and sent out a call for submissions. I was intrigued by the project and decided to submit a translation. Among many Chinese writers, Li Qingzhao immediately came to mind, as a writer known widely by the public in China but little known or translated in America.
The first work of hers I ended up translating for the anthology was a ci titled A Cutting of Plum Blossoms. The ci, which is filled with a feeling of absence and romantic longing, begins by illuminating a lone speaker. And it ends with a statement of her longing, which is the only certainty that remains. Li Qingzhao’s images have a Dickinsonian feel to them; they are direct, surprising, and emotionally cutting. This ci is a perfect example of why her writing appealed to the Chinese during her life and in the centuries after.
Certainly, her work captivated me even more as a translator who had to puzzle through how to best capture this particular quality of hers. There was a magic to the process of translation; it felt like a communion that transcended time and space. For the next decade, I continued to translate her ci one by one, gaining encouragement from editors and professors. Her work offered me mentorship and guidance as a young woman writer working in the 21st century and led me to think more deeply about language through the practice of translation. I know that my writing has been transformed through translating Li Qingzhao — and for that, I will be forever grateful.
4. How did the author come across the idea of translation?
A. Through a college class. B. By joining a poetry contest.
C. Through a fellow student’s project. D. By reading Li Qingzhao’s works.
5. Why did the author choose to translate Li Qingzhao’s poetry?
A. To redefine her own writing style.
B. To gain recognition from editors and professors.
C To explore the challenges faced by women writers.
D. To enable more people to learn about her and her works.
6. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. Highlighting Li Qingzhao’s writing style.
B. Describing the process of translating a ci.
C. Introducing the first work the author translated.
D. Comparing Li Qingzhao’s style with that of Emily Dickinson.
7. What does the underlined word “mentorship” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Model. B. Conflict. C. Sample. D. Instruction .
C
A portrait of the British mathematician Alan Turing sold at auction (拍卖会) for nearly $1.1 million on Thursday, a surprisingly large sum for a painting whose creator wasn’t an artist in the traditional sense, but a human-like robot powered by artificial intelligence.
The experiment was the brainchild of Aidan Meller, a former gallerist who has worked with a team of nearly 30 people to build the robot. The robot is dressed like a woman with a bob haircut and is referred to as Ai-Da in honor of Ada Lovelace, the 19th-century mathematician who has been recognized as the world’s first computer programmer.
The painting, titled AI God: Portrait of Alan Turing, was offered as part of Sotheby’s digital art sale and initially was estimated to sell for $120,000 to $180,000. It received more than 27 bids and was sold to an anonymous buyer from the United States.
Meller originally asked Ai-Da to create something for a conference on artificial intelligence organized by the United Nations this year. The robot responded with a suggestion that it paint a portrait of Turing as an example of someone who predicted the power of AI technology as early as the 1950s.
But the process of actually finishing the artwork was more complicated. Ai-Da’s programming interpreted a photograph of Turing and produced 15 individual paintings based on different parts of his face. The robot chose three of the portraits, alongside a painting of Turing’s Bombe machine, the name for the codebreaking device he built, which appears in the background.
Ai-Da which uses AI to speak, said, “The key value of my work is its potential to begin conversation about emerging technologies.” It also added that this painting invited people to reflect on the god-like nature of AI while considering the ethical and social effects of these advancements.
8. What can we know about the portrait?
A. It was painted by a former gallerist. B. It was created in honor of Ada Lovelace.
C. It was sold at a higher price than expected. D. It is the first artwork created by robots.
9. How did Ai-Da complete the final portrait?
A. By combining three selected portraits with a Bombe picture.
B. By directly copying a single photograph of Turing .
C. By putting a picture of the Bombe machine in the middle.
D. By analyzing 15 different photographs of Turing.
10. According to Ai-Da, what is the main purpose of its portrait?
A. To showcase its advanced artistic skills. B. To start discussions about new technologies.
C. To promote people’s moral awareness. D. To teach people about Turing’s personal life.
11. What would be the best title of the passage?
A. The Most Expensive Painting B. Life and Achievements of Alan Turing
C. How AI Robots are Changing the Art World D. An AI-created Portrait Sells for a High Price
D
Researchers say they have found the likely time in history when human beings first began to speak.
Dr Steven Mithen, an archaeologist and expert in prehistory, suggested that basic language was formed around 1.6 million years ago, which is eight times earlier than many scientists thought. Experts in evolution previously believed that spoken human language began around 200,000 years ago. Mithen said his studies show that the first human language developed either in eastern or southern Africa. He said the ability to speak helped evolution.
Mithen recognizes that language is a comprehensive brain, body, social and cultural phenomenon that requires a knowledge of such subjects as linguistics, psychology, neuroscience, and genetics, each with its own data, theories, methods and terminologies (术语). He thought speech was, without doubt, the key which made much of subsequent human physical and cultural evolution possible.
Dr Mithen explains how he believes human speech developed so long ago in his new book called The Language Puzzle, in which he explores how linguistic and evolutionary developments go hand in hand. He says our brain quickly increased in size just over 1.5 million years ago. This increase changed the structure of our brain. An area called the frontal lobe (额叶) developed. This is the part of the brain that produces language. Another important change was the development of our vocal tract (声道). This is where we produce sound, and therefore speech.
Mithen said speech made it convenient for humans to communicate around the world. It meant humans could do three important things. They could think of plan and future actions, and they could pass on knowledge. Mithen said language changed the human story profoundly.
From ancient times to the present, language has been a unique way of communication for humans, reflecting the highly evolved process of human beings on both physiological and psychological levels. Understanding the origin, development, and changes of language can help us better understand the development of human civilization and society, thereby facilitating cultural inheritance and exchange.
12. How many years earlier did Mithen suggest speech begin?
A. Around 1.6 million years B. Around 1.5 million years
C. Around 1.4 million years D. Around 0.2 million years
13. What is the possible relationship between language and brain evolution?
A. Brain size increased because of language use.
B. Language had no impact on brain capacity.
C. Vocal tract evolution caused brain expansion.
D Brain structural changes make language development possible.
14. According to the passage, we can infer that ________.
A. language is a complex phenomenon involving multiple aspects.
B. gene plays a more significant role in early human communication.
C. early human vocal tracts were similar to those of modern apes.
D. language enables strategic thinking while discourages knowledge transmission.
15. What is Dr Mithen’s attitude towards the impact of language on human’s evolution?
A. Indifferent. B. Positive. C. Negative. D. Neutral.

One report shows 79% of this generation, born after 2010, plays games weekly. While gaming is fun, brings joy, and offers social and cognitive benefits, it can also make it easy for online predators to find their targets. ___16___ . However, taking some active steps to educate kids, set boundaries and monitor content can go a long way.
●Be open about risks
Discussing some sensitive problems online can feel uncomfortable, but it’s important to be open about it.___17___. Titania Jordan, the author of Parental Control, suggests asking a child questions like: What would you do if a stranger online offered to give you game currency in exchange for a picture of yourself? Do you think everyone on chat apps is who they say they are? How do you know that people are who they say they are?
● ___18___
During these conversations, Jordan suggests explaining to kids that they can always come to you with issues they are having. You might say, “I’m always here to protect you and will always be on your side. No matter what happens, I love you, and we’ll tackle everything together.” If a child knows that their parent won’t get mad at them, they’re far more likely to explain when they’re in danger.
●Play alongside your child
___19___. Playing alongside your child gives you a firmer grasp on the gaming environment, and note any red flags. During gameplay, you might notice chat messages appearing from strangers or invitations to join private servers. This allows you to naturally discuss these interactions. This conversation feels less like an interrogation and gives you insights into how your child handles these situations.
●Create a safety plan together
Working on a safety plan together can empower kids to speak up for themselves and come to you. Rather than secretly restricting chat features, sit with your kid and say, “Let’s look at these privacy settings together. What do you think is most important to stay safe? Which settings might help with this?” Exploring these tools and settings together and practicing what the child should do can help. ___20___.
A. Use parental controls openly
B. Establish yourself as a safe place
C. Parents cannot control everything
D. Work with kids on problem-solving before it’s too late
E. On a positive note, gaming doesn’t need to be banned completely
F. Roll up your sleeves and break out your thumbs for an e-game night
G. That way, if a situation ever arises, they’ll feel empowered, not panicked

Spiro had just moved to a new neighborhood, and everything felt different. His first week at the new school was hard. The classrooms were unfamiliar, and he didn’t know anyone. Every day, he rode the bus home feeling lonely. He missed his old friends and the fun they had together.
One afternoon, as he walked home from school, he noticed the neighbor boy Dominic waiting by the street. Dominic was friendly and often greeted Spiro. Today, he looked excited. He asked Spiro how his first week at school had been. Spiro wanted to say it had been awful, but instead, he replied that it was “okay.” Looking at his pale face, Dominic asked Spiro if he was sick. Spiro replied he was feeling sick from the bus rides and that he really missed riding his bike to school.
After hearing Spiro’s response, Dominic mentioned that there was a bike trail (小路) just two streets over. He excitedly explained how beautiful it was and how he often rode there with his friends. Dominíc offered a friendly invitation: once Spiro was feeling better, they could ride bikes together on the trail. Spiro’s interest was inspired, but he hesitated. He didn’t want to impose on (勉强) Dominic or the other kids he didn’t know well.
Later that day, Spiro returned home and saw his bike in the garage. It was covered in dust and surrounded by unpacked boxes. As he wiped off the dust, memories flooded back. He remembered riding around his old neighborhood with his friends, laughing and having fun. Those days felt so far away, but the memories brought a smile to his face. He thought about how much he loved biking and how good it felt to be outside in the fresh air.
With those memories in mind, Spiro began to think about Dominic’s invitation again. He felt a mix of excitement and uncertainty. What if he tried? What if it was fun? The more he thought about it, the more he wanted to go. Finally, he made a decision. He would accept the invitation and join Dominic and the others.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
(2) 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Then Spiro rode his bike to Dominic’s house with a sense of determination.

C. To explore the challenges faced by women writers.
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. C 7. D

Ai-Da, which uses AI to speak, said, “The key value of my work is its potential to begin conversation about emerging technologies.” It also added that this painting invited people to reflect on the god-like nature of AI while considering the ethical and social effects of these advancements.

D. Brain structural changes make language development possible.
15 What is Dr Mithen’s attitude towards the impact of language on human’s evolution?
A. Indifferent. B. Positive. C. Negative. D. Neutral.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. B

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Version I
Then Spiro rode his bike to Dominic’s house with a sense of determination. As he cycled, Spiro couldn’t help but feel a bit nervous, his palms slightly sweaty against the handlebars. With his heart pounding, Spiro arrived at Dominic’s. “Welcome! We’ve been waiting,” Dominic and the other two kids greeted warmly. Only after hearing these words did Spiro’s anxiety fade away. Mounting their bikes, off they went. Down the bike -trail they sped, the wind brushing against their faces. It was at this moment that Spiro truly felt energetic, leaving behind his loneliness.
The four kids rode together along the bike trail, sharing stories and laughter. Spiro, now relaxed, shared tales of his old neighborhood, while the others listened intently. Not only did he enjoy the ride, but he also felt a growing sense of belonging. As they pedaled side by side, Spiro realized that sometimes, taking a chance could lead to wonderful surprises. By the end of the day, his loneliness had disappeared, replaced by joy and hope for the future. This bike trail wasn’t just a path, it was a bridge connecting him to his new friends and a new life full of possibilities.
Version II
Then Spiro rode his bike to Dominic’s house with a sense of determination. As he approached the front yard, he heard cheerful shouts. Dominic was adjusting his bike chain, while two other boys stood nearby. “ Finally! We were waiting for you,” Dominic grinned, waving him over. The boy with the helmet, Max, nodded and said, “I’m Max. This is Sam. He’s our bike repair expert.” Sam blushed but gave a friendly smile. Spiro’s heart raced fast as he parked his bike, but the warm welcome eased his worries. With a deep breath, he joined the group and they set off.
The four kids rode together along the bike trail, sharing stories and laughter. Spiro told them about the wild things his old friends did on bikes, and Max talked about races in their neighborhood. Sam, who didn’t talk much usually, laughed a lot as he told the story of the time Dominic tried to lift the front wheel of his bike but fell. When they reached a small bridge over a stream, they stopped to watch the water flow. Spiro looked around at his new friends, feeling a sense of belonging. The afternoon sun cast long shadows as they continued, and he knew this was the start of many more adventures.
