Fifteen years ago, I took a summer vacation in Lecce in southern Italy. After climbing up a hill for a panoramic (全景的) view of the blue sea, white buildings and green olive trees, I paused to catch my breath and then positioned myself to take the best photo of this panorama.
Unfortunately, just as I took out my camera, a woman approached from behind, and planted herself right in front of my view. Like me, this woman was here to stop, sigh and appreciate the view.
Patient as I was, after about 15 minutes, my camera scanning the sun and reviewing the shot I would eventually take, I grew frustrated. Was it too much to ask her to move so I could take just one picture of the landscape? Sure, I could have asked her, but something prevented me from doing so. She seemed so content in her observation. I didn’t want to mess with that.
Another 15 minutes passed and I grew bored. The woman was still there. I decided to take the photo anyway. And now when I look at it, I think her presence in the photo is what makes the image interesting. The landscape, beautiful on its own, somehow comes to life and breathes because this woman is engaging with it.
This photo, with the unique beauty that unfolded before me and that woman who “ruined” it, now hangs on a wall in my bedroom. What would she think if she knew that her figure is captured (捕捉) and frozen on some stranger’s bedroom wall? A bedroom, after all, is a very private space, in which some woman I don’t even know has been immortalized (使……永存). In some ways, she lives in my house.
Perhaps we all live in each other’s spaces. Perhaps this is what photos are for: to remind us that we all appreciate beauty, that we all share a common desire for pleasure, for connection, for something that is greater than us.
That photo is a reminder, a captured moment, an unspoken conversation between two women, separated only by a thin square of glass.
4. What happened when the author was about to take a photo?
A. Her camera stopped working. B. A woman blocked her view.
C. Someone asked her to leave. D. A friend approached from behind.
5. According to the author, the woman was probably ___________.
A. enjoying herself B. losing her patience
C. waiting for the sunset D. thinking about her past
6. The photo on the bedroom wall enables the author to better understand ____________.
A. the need to be close to nature B. the importance of private space
C. the joy of the vacation in Italy D. the shared passion for beauty
7. The passage can be seen as the author’s reflections upon ___________.
A. a particular life experience B. the pleasure of traveling
C. the art of photography D. a lost friendship
C
Imagine that you are in a crowded place. You do not notice, but someone is watching you and learns your iPhone password(密码). Then, they steal your phone. Suddenly, your photos, documents, financial information, and the rest of your digital life have been taken from you.
Apple, the iPhone maker, recently released an update to its iOS operating system. It has a new feature called Stolen Device Protection (SDP). The feature makes it a lot harder for phone thieves to open the device and access important functions and settings.
Apple says the feature adds extra security for users. It addresses a drawback that thieves have used to lock device owners out of their Apple accounts, delete their photos and other files from their iCloud, and take money from their bank accounts.
SDP keeps track of a user’s “familiar locations”, such as their home or workplace. It also reduces the importance of passwords. Instead, it favors “biometric”(生物识别的)features such as faces or fingerprints, which are a lot harder to copy.
If a thief tries to erase or reset an iPhone the device will require a Face ID or Touch ID scan to confirm that the person is the rightful owner. The new feature does not let someone use the password or any other backup method.
Another part of the new feature is designed to slow down thieves trying to change security settings. For example, if someone tries to sign out of an Apple ID account, change the password or reset the phone in an unfamiliar location, they will have to authenticate(证实)by using Face ID or Touch ID, wait an hour, and then do a second facial or fingerprint scan.
Changing an Apple ID password, updating Apple ID security settings, adding or removing Face or Touch ID, and turning off the Find My device feature or Stolen Device Protection also will lead to this feature.
8. What is the function of paragraph 1?
A. To set a phone-stealing scene.
B. To introduce the following text.
C. To remind readers to be cautious.
D. To explain how password theft directly causes device loss.
9. What can SDP do to add security for users?
A. Stop iCloud files from being deleted.
B. Make it less likely to enter the phone.
C. Secure Apple accounts with remote locking.
D. Prevent thieves from accessing bank accounts.
10. What does SDP require for resetting a stolen iPhone?
A. Previous passwords. B. A new security setting. C. An Apple ID account. D. Identity recognition.
11. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. iPhone’s anti-theft measure. B. Apple ID security settings.
C. Usage of biometric features. D. Apple’s iOS operating system.

A recent research study suggests that learning music doesn’t make you smarter.
For a while, there was an idea found on the Internet and in various magazines that suggested that babies could become smarter if they listened to Mozart, or to other classical music. Inspired, some parents bought classical CDs for their babies in the hope that this would boost their intelligence. But this so-called “Mozart Effect” has been challenged repeatedly.
But is taking music lessons surely different from just listening to music? Wouldn’t taking music lessons make kids smarter? That’s exactly the question that many researchers over the years have tried to answer. Some of their studies concluded that it does, and some found that it doesn’t. For example, one study showed that music education did not improve reading skills, while another one found a small effect of music on young children’s ability to learn words.
The researchers of the new study, Giovanni Sala (Fujita Health University) and Fernand Gober (London School of Economics) , looked at the data behind 54 carefully selected studies, and after carefully comparing the data from different papers, they concluded that children who took music lessons did not score higher on tests that measured their intelligence or academic ability than kids that didn’t learn music.
If music doesn’t make you smarter, how does that explain other researches that show that music lessons help students’ school performance? It seems like there is something about music lessons that makes students able to perform better in their other classes. That doesn’t have to be intelligence, and it’s likely not. Music lessons could have helped in different ways: they could have led to a change in homework habits, they could have increased confidence, or they could have improved social skills. And finally, they also mention that music education could still be beneficial to students’ performance in non-music subject if music is combined with these classes. So feel free to keep making music, and keep encouraging children to learn music.
12. Which of the following words is closest to the underlined word “boost” in paragraph 2?
A. Improve. B. Reduce. C. Need. D. Influence.
13. What does the example in paragraph 3 prove?
A. Listening to music benefits kids a lot.
B. Whether music education suits all kids remains unknown.
C. Listening to music fails to help kids in language learning.
D. Whether taking music lessons makes kids smarter is not certain.
14. How did the researchers do the new study?
A. They did 54 small studies in all. B. They examined plenty of previous research.
C. They observed children in music classes. D. They did an online survey of musical students.
15. What result can we know from the last paragraph?
A. A student’s intelligence can be increased with effort.
B. Intelligence determines one’s school performance.
C. Music lessons should be encouraged for children.
D. Students should avoid listening to music while studying.

How to deal with post-vacation blues
Dreaming at your desk about your recent vacation? Having trouble concentrating? Feeling depressed and wishing you were anywhere but at work? You are not alone. This worry about the first day back to work is perfectly normal according to Dr. Angelos Halaris, a professor of psychology at Loyola University in Illinois. ___16___ A 2017 study found adolescent depression, anxiety and feelings about everyday troubles appeared to be tied to the end and beginning of school-vacation cycles. Here are some effective ways to help you deal with post-vacation blues.
___17___Experts say having something to look forward to can ease the bite of the back to work blues. For instance, a half-day break to the suburbs of your city.
Ease back into work. "Don't jump into the cold water, you'll have a heart attack. Ease your way back into your routine," Halaris said. Set small goals to feel a sense of accomplishment._____18_____ If you're always stuck at your desk, set a timer and take a quick walk or try to fit in a workout.
Don't live in the past. Know that something you enjoyed has come to an end but make peace with it and know it will come back again. ___19___"Self-talk and being optimistic are important," Halaris said. Look at kitten pictures online if you need a little lift. Take advantage of the break in your routine and start new office habits. Something small like getting up to walk away from your desk once an hour helps.
Do connect. People who are blue tend toward withdrawal. "Push yourself to communicate even if you don't feel like it," Halaris said. ___20___
A. It's not just adults, either.
B. Company helps avoid the blues.
C. Resist feeling sorry for yourself.
D. Another study also confirms this finding.
E. Book another vacation—even if it's a mini-vacation.
F. You can also try to add some variety to your work life.
G. Keeping yourself occupied can help you avoid the post-vacation blues.

Grandpa David’s birthday was a week away. Michael and his parents were busy planning a big party for him when Grandpa invited him for a walk. Thinking of Grandpa’s joy in waving at passers-by, Michael eagerly agreed. “I’m ready, Grandpa!” Michael replied, watching Grandpa put on his beloved red hat before they went out.
As they walked, Grandpa cheerfully waved at the car that drove by. A young boy leaned out of the window and shouted, “There’s the man in the red hat!” Grandpa waved to him and the people in the next three cars, all of whom joyfully waved back. Although Michael didn’t understand why Grandpa was doing so, he thought it interesting.
As they turned a corner, an old man with a brown hat was walking towards them. “Hi, Joseph, it’s good to see you,” Grandpa greeted him warmly. “I hate going out in winter!” Joseph complained, pulling his scarf up over his mouth and nose as he walked by. “He’s bad-tempered!” Michael said in a low voice. But Grandpa whispered to him that Joseph was just lonely, for he lived by himself, and suggested they might be able to help.
Suddenly, a rush of wind blew off Joseph’s brown hat, sending it towards the pond before disappearing from sight. Joseph was very upset, shaking in the cold. Without hesitation, Grandpa lent a helping hand. “You can take mine if you don’t mind,” he said, handing his red hat over to Joseph.
“Thanks,” Joseph said, putting on the red hat and continuing on his way. A car passed, and the people inside waved at Joseph, recognizing him as “the man in the red hat”. Another car passed and honked. At first confused, Joseph soon caught on, waving back at the third car that greeted him.
Observing this heartwarming exchange, Grandpa and Michael couldn’t help but smile, realizing Grandpa’s plan to brighten Joseph’s day was taking effect.
A week later, a big party was held for Grandpa’s birthday.

To everyone’s surprise, Joseph came with a present. “Here, this is for you,” he said, handing over a new red hat, much like the one that Grandpa had given him. “Thank you for your red hat! It brought me lots of comfort and joy,” Joseph said in a choked voice. Grandpa patted him on the shoulder, put on the red hat and invited him to join in his daily walk later. Now, there were two men in red hats. The whole room burst into cheers and applause as Joseph and Grandpa shared a warm hug.
After the party, Michael and two men in red hats began their daily walk. Grandpa and Joseph walked side by side, waving cheerfully to the passing cars.
