I was on the edge of burnout, after months of hard preparation for the college entrance exams. Every day was filled with textbooks and endless practice papers, and I had gradually moved away from music, the very thing that once brought me the greatest joy.
One weekend, I happened to come across a street music festival. Among the performers was a young girl around my age, she had a voice that seemed to cut through my tiredness and I can’t help tapping my feet, with a long-lost sense of excitement welling up inside.
That performance served as a turning point. It made me realize how much I had been sacrificing my inner self for school achievements. With determination, I got back my old piano sheet music and changed my study schedule. Despite the heavy workload, I set aside a fixed period to enjoy music. Whether I was practicing challenging classical pieces or creating simple melodies, those musical moments became a necessary part of my daily life.
Surprisingly, these music breaks became a source of energy and inspiration. The pleasant flow of notes calmed my nerves, improved my concentration and refreshed my mind. I began to study with newfound eagerness. Music, in fact, taught me that even in the most stressful times, I could maintain my love for music while still staying devoted to my study-related goals, achieving a balance between aim and interest.
24. Why did the author stop enjoying music before?
A. Busy exam preparation. B. Less interest in music.
C. Family pressure for grades. D. Negative effects of addiction.
25. What did the girl’s performance inspire the author to do?

26. What was the influence of music breaks?
A. Better focus on studying. B. Lower grades in exams.
C. Strong desire to be a musician. D. Fewer hours for practice papers.
27. What’s the author’s change after the music festival?
A. Improving old piano sheet. B. Reducing study time for music.
C. Balancing study and music. D. Creating classical pieces.

Like most other parrots, parakeets (长尾小鹦鹉) are known to have the ability to copy human speech. Now a new study has found that when parakeets make sounds, their brains work similarly to the way human brains function when we speak.
The study was led by Michael Long, a professor at New York University. Long’s team focused on common parakeets, also known as budgerigars or budgies. They placed tiny probes (探针) into the brains of four birds to keep track of their brain activity as they made sounds, focusing on a part of the brain called the anterior arcopallium (AAC), which is known to affect vocal muscles, which are muscles related to voice.
They found that certain brain cells (细胞) became active when the birds made specific sounds. Some cells seemed to be involved in producing consonants, and others created vowels. Some showed activity when the birds made high sounds, while other cells lit up for low sounds. This simple system allows parakeets to combine different sounds to make complex calls. Long described it as a “beautiful solution” for sound production.
In human brains, specific brain cell activity is connected with certain movements of the lips or tongue. This is the first time scientists have identified a similar language “map” in the brain of a nonhuman animal. The researchers think it’s possible that other parrots also have a similar set up in their brains.
Long’s team also studied zebra finches. Compared to parakeets, the finches’ brains have complex systems. But these can make only simple songs and cannot copy human speech.
Researching how language works in bird brains could help scientists better understand how it works in the human brain. This could lead to solutions for speech injuries in humans. Long said that discovering insights from animals is “an important way to develop new treatments for speech disorders.”
28. What is the function of tiny probes?
A. To study the structure of AAC. B. To record parakeets’ brain response.
C. To help parakeets make sounds. D. To change parakeets’ muscular system.
29. What can we know about parakeets’ brain cells?
A. They work in a puzzling way. B. They fail to mix different sounds.
C. They only process high sounds. D. They react to sounds differently.
30. Which is the new finding about parakeets?
A. Ability to sing beautiful songs. B. Talent for copying human speech.
C. Speech-linked brain activity. D. Higher intelligence than zebra finches.
31. Which aspect of the study does the last paragraph mainly focus on?
A. The method. B. The process. C. The significance. D. The future.

Two rare (罕见) statues were discovered during a digging project in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, in Italy. The images of a woman and man are nearly life-size and carved in careful detail. Experts are unsure whether the pair are husband and wife or mother and son, but the woman’s appearance indicates that she may have been a high-ranking priestess (女祭司) and was more important than the man.
Pompeii, an important ancient economic and cultural center, was a thriving seaside town with about 10,000 residents and grand homes, marketplaces and art. Here, loaded with precious goods, trading ships from all over the Roman Empire traveled back and forth. In the year 79, a nearby volcano called Mount Vesuvius erupted and buried the city beneath layers of volcanic ash. The ash preserved Pompeii nearly perfectly, until its rediscovery in the mid 1700s. Experts have been digging it out slowly, and they frequently make new discoveries.
The statues are located on the wall of a tomb near the city gates. Archaeologists estimate that the carvings were made between 200 BCE and 1 BCE. They analyzed how the statues were decorated and determined that they were people with high position in Roman society.
The man is wearing a long robe and a style of shoes worn by the upper class. The woman is dressed in a fancier way, in a graceful coat and a fitted dress with jewelry including earrings, rings and a necklace. Based on the symbolism of the objects she wears and holds, experts believe the woman could have been a high-ranking priestess of Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture and motherly relationships.
The project’s leaders said it’s rare to find large statues like these in the region, especially one with a woman holding religious objects. In a description of the discovery, they wrote that her statue “draws attention to the active role of women acting as priestesses in the religious life of their communities.” Thus, newly discovered relics in Pompeii stand as timeless witnesses to ancient Roman civilization and women’s power.
32. What does the underlined word “thriving” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Ordinary. B. Peaceful. C. Wealthy. D. Independent.
33. What is the feature of the two newly-discovered statues?
A. They’re of the same size. B. They’re carved very simply.
C. They’re husband and wife. D. They’re likely made 2000 years ago.
34 What indicates the woman statue’s high rank?
A. Her upper-class shoes. B. Her symbolic decorations.
C. Her agricultural skills. D. Her beautiful appearance.
35. Which is the most suitable title of the passage?
A. High-Ranking Women in Ancient Rome B. Ancient Roman Fashion Revealed by Statues
C. The Ruins of Pompeii: A Historical Wonder D. Rare Statues in Pompeii: A Look into the Past

The hot sun on your skin, sweat going into your eyes — anyone who has played a sport in the middle of summer knows it’s not easy. And some people even think adding heat is a good way to get a better workout — like in hot yoga or hot Pilates, which are done in rooms as hot as 38 degrees Celsius. ____36____
The answer isn’t as simple as a yes or no. There may be some benefits of exercising in high temperatures. It is believed that these works warm the muscles, which can help you avoid injuries. ____37____ This is because they make your heart work a bit harder.
But before you turn the heat up, it’s not all good news. For one thing, your body might not be able to work as hard in high heat as it can in cooler temperatures, meaning your workout won't be as good as you might like.
____38____ Because the body sweats more, it's easy to get dehydrated (脱水). Sweating also means losing important salts, so you may feel tightening and discomfort in your muscles or stomach.
____39____ It is a dangerous state of extreme overheating which happens when your body gets too hot and its temperature goes over degrees Celsius. This situation of high body temperature, like heatstroke (中暑), can cause serious damage to different parts of your body, like your brain, heart, liver and kidneys and in extreme cases, even death.
If you do want to try heated exercise, there are ways to make it safer. Drinking lots of water helps stop you from getting dehydrated. ____40____ 40 And try to wear light clothes — and take breaks when you need to!
A. But are high-temperature workouts really better?
B. The biggest risk of exercising in heat is heatstroke.
C. But why do people like high-temperature workouts?
D. Heated works may also help you burn more calories.
E. This is why many people prefer to exercise in the cool evening.
F. There are also health risks related to exercising in high temperatures.
G. Sports drinks will replace any of those important salts you lose from sweat too.

In a small village with stony streets and a bright square, 17-year-old Chiara has lived her entire life with her grandmother. Her workshop is a warm space filled with an ancient wooden loom (织布机) and tapestries (挂毯) that tell stories of the village. “This loom is 200 years old,” Grandmother often says. “Your great-grandfather carried it on his back during the war, escaping bombs to save it. It made cloth for his army uniform, the curtains in our first home, and even the blanket you slept in as a baby.” Chiara runs her fingers gently along the blue tapestry with stars — grandma made it when Chiara was born, adding hope to every string.
One spring morning, a developer arrives with plans for a hotel. “The square needs modernization,” he announces. “These old buildings will be pulled down.” Grandma’s face pales. “Without this workshop, the loom's stories will be forgotten,” she tells Chiara, with tears in her eyes. Chiara suddenly remembers her childhood: hiding under the loom while grandma was weaving (编织), listening to tales of villagers. She realizes she must act.
Chiara photographs every tapestry: villagers rebuilding a bridge after a storm, children laughing around a fire, and grandma as a young woman weaving at the loom. She posts them online with the description: “Our village is not just stone and wood — it’s the stories we've shared for generations. Help us save our heart.” The posts are flooded with comments, such as: “My grandmother taught me to make tapestry on a loom like this!”, “Don’t let progress erase your past.” Even Chiara’s history teacher writes, “This is living history.”
A local reporter interviews Chiara in front of the loom. “Each tapestry is a chapter,” she says, holding up the harvest festival tapestry. “Grandma weaves memories of joy, struggle, and community. Can a hotel hold such things?” The article starts a wave of support, with people from neighboring towns visiting the village to see the loom.

D. The future.
【答案】28. B 29. D 30. C 31. C
【解析】

Two rare (罕见的) statues were discovered during a digging project in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, in Italy.
34. What indicates the woman statue’s high rank?
A. Her upper-class shoes. B. Her symbolic decorations.
C. Her agricultural skills. D. Her beautiful appearance.
35. Which is the most suitable title of the passage?
A. High-Ranking Women in Ancient Rome B. Ancient Roman Fashion Revealed by Statues
C. The Ruins of Pompeii: A Historical Wonder D. Rare Statues in Pompeii: A Look into the Past
【答案】32. C 33. D 34. B 35. D

【答案】36. A 37. D 38. F 39. B 40. G

(有些人甚至认为,增加热量是进行更好锻炼的好方法——比如在高温瑜伽或高温普拉提中,这些运动是在高达38摄氏度的房间里进行的。)”及下文“The answer isn’t as simple as a yes or no. There may be some benefits of exercising in high temperatures. (答案并不是简单的 “是” 或 “否”。在高温下锻炼可能有一些好处。)”和“But before you turn the heat up, it’s not all good news. (一方面,你的身体在高温下可能无法像在凉爽温度下那样努力工作,这意味着你的锻炼效果可能不如你期望的那么好。)”及下文“Because the body sweats more, it's easy to get dehydrated (脱水). Sweating also means losing important salts, so you may feel tightening and discomfort in your muscles or stomach. (因为身体出汗更多,所以很容易脱水。出汗也意味着失去重要的盐分,所以你可能会感到肌肉或胃部紧绷和不适。)”可知,本空应指出高温锻炼也存在健康风险,F选项“There are also health risks related to exercising in high temperatures. (在高温下锻炼也存在健康风险。)”能承上启下,符合题意。故选F。
【39题详解】
由下文“It is a dangerous state of extreme overheating which happens when your body gets too hot and its temperature goes over 40 degrees Celsius. (这是一种极度过热的危险状态,当你的身体变得太热,体温超过40摄氏度时就会发生。)”可知,本空应具体指出高温锻炼的最大风险是中暑,B选项“The biggest risk of exercising in heat is heatstroke. (在高温下锻炼的最大风险是中暑。)”能引出下文,符合题意。故选B。
【40题详解】

(尽量穿轻便的衣服——需要的时候休息一下!)”可知,本空应继续给出高温锻炼时的安全建议,G选项“Sports drinks will replace any of those important salts you lose from sweat too.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】参考范文:
Chiara, inspired by the great online support, decides to organize a cultural presentation in the village square. With the help of classmates, neighbors, and her history teacher, they change the square into a living museum. Chiara skillfully show to visitors how it works, explaining that loom is the heartbeat of our village. Villagers share their personal tales related to the loom and the tapestries. The event attracts not only people from nearby towns but also local government officials. The developer also attends, realizing the significance of preserving the workshop and the square.
Seeing the soul of the village, the developer approaches Chiara a few days later and tells his new plan. The hotel will be constructed on the outskirts of the village, and a cultural center will be built to preserve and promote the village’s weaving traditions. Grandmother and Chiara are overjoyed. In the following months, Chiara, along with other villagers, begins to prepare for the construction and decoration of the cultural center. Chiara realizes that they have not only saved their cultural heritage but also created a place where stories will continue to be told and cherished.
