(24-25九年级上·江苏常州·期中)Scientists find that hard-working people can live longer than idle (不工作的) people. Career (职业) women are healthier than housewives. Evidence (证据) shows that the jobless are in poorer health than the job-holder. A report shows that whenever the unemployment rate (失业率) increases (增长) by 1%, the death rate increases by 2%. All this comes down to one point—work is helpful to health.
Why is work good for health? It is because work keeps people busy and away from loneliness. That’s also why career women are healthier and happier than housewives. Researches show that people feel unhappy and worried when they have nothing to do. Instead, the happiest are those who are busy. Many high achievers who love their careers feel that they are happiest when they are working hard. Work serves as a bridge between man and reality. By work, people come into contact (联系) with each other. If people take part in some activities, they can find friendship and warmth. This is helpful to health. The loss of work means the loss of everything. It affects man in spirit and makes him easy to get ill.
Besides, work gives one a sense of fulfillment (充实感). Work makes one feel his value in society. When a writer finishes his writing or a doctor successfully operates on a patient or a teacher sees his students grow, they are happy beyond words.
From the above we can know that the more you work, the happier and healthier you will be. Let us work hard and study well and live a happy and healthy life.

(24-25九年级上·江苏常州·阶段练习)I went to bed last night as if it were any other usual night, and then the phone rang, so I answered the phone, and it was the chairperson of the Nobel Prize Committee. It was just a shocking moment of excitement. The final word was, “Within the next 50 minutes, your life is normal as you have known it, but as soon as we tell it to people in public, your life will change.”
Science is sometimes thought of as being difficult because there’s a high failure (失败) rate (比率). Really, there are no failures. Rather, there are experiments (实验) whose results you did not expect. This is your chance to learn something new.
I took organic (有机) chemistry at the beginning because it was required of my biology major (专业), and I made myself a pre-med (医学预科生). But then, surprisingly, I found the subject to be beautiful and understandable. And I fell in love with the subject. While my friends were going out to parties on a Friday or Saturday night, I was making excuses to stay in my room and read organic chemistry books.
It’s very important to me that I have the chance to help younger scientists because I know that whatever my lab can contribute (贡献) to the world, it s a sliver compared to what the totality of all of my students will contribute to the world.

Although it happened over 10 years ago, I still remember the moment clearly, I had ordered a drink at a mall in Beijing. When it was ready, the server handed me a cup with laowai written on it, meaning“foreigner”.
It was my second day in China, and this marked the first at different places when I would be called a laowai in public. What does it feel like to be called a laowai?
As someone who doesn’t like being in the spotlight (聚光灯), walking down the street and suddenly hearing someone say to their friend, “Look, a laowai”, is not a pleasant experience. It just makes you feel awkward and draws unnecessary attention.
As much as I dislike being singled out, I also try to understand. China is not a nation like Australia, where I’m from. So. for many Chinese people, seeing a foreigner is still a big deal. When I’m in a place in China with few foreigners, even I sometimes can’t help but point out to my friends that there’s another foreigner nearby, I just make sure to do it carefully!
My Chinese friends also tell me that laowai is a more welcome term than waiguoren because lao adds a touch of respect and friendship. I’ve never felt it came from a place of rudeness or disrespect. The longer I live here, the more China feels like home, and the more I just want to “fit in”. And that, I think, is something beautiful.
1.What does laowai mean?
2.How does the writer feel when being called laowai?
3.What would you say when you see a foreigner? Why?
【答案】1.Foreigner. 2.The writer feels awkward and uncomfortable when being called laowai, as it draws unnecessary attention. 3.When I see a foreigner, I would probably say “Hello”, because I want to respect him/her and not make him/her feel uncomfortable.
【导语】本文讲述了一个外国人在中国被称为“老外”的经历和感受,以及他对这一称呼的理解和适应过程。
1.根据“...the server handed me a cup with laowai written on it, meaning ‘foreigner’”可知,老外的意思是“foreigner”,即“外国人”。故填Foreigner.
2.根据“...hearing someone say to their friend, ‘Look, a laowai’, is not a pleasant experience”以及“It just makes you feel awkward and draws unnecessary attention.”可知,作者感到尴尬和不舒服,因为这样会引来不必要的关注。故填The writer feels awkward and uncomfortable when being called laowai, as it draws unnecessary attention.
3.开放性作答,结合实际,言之有理即可。参考答案为When I see a foreigner, I would probably say “Hello”, because I want to respect him/her and not make him/her feel uncomfortable.

What is personality?
Personality is the pattern of feelings, thoughts and behavior shown through people’s lives. It makes them different from others.
Each person’s personality is made up of different personality characters such as kindness or shyness. These characters decide how people behave in different situations. For example, if someone shy is served the wrong meal in a restaurant, he probably won’t say anything. On the other hand, someone outgoing will probably complain and get the meal he ordered.
Where does your personality come from?
The human brain is like a computer because it controls the human body just as a computer controls a robot.
However, humans aren’t robots! We have personalities. The human brain has a special part giving us personality and allowing us to think for ourselves, unlike a computer. This part of the brain is called the mind.
Personality types
Clearly scientists cannot study the mind by looking inside someone’s brain! All they would see is blood and grey matter. To study the mind, scientists have to study human behavior. This includes watching people carefully and organizing personality tests like this one:
1. Do you think you’re pretty or good-looking?
2. Would you rather read a book or go to a party?
3. Do you have a large group of friends or just one or two close friends?
4. Do you mind talking in public or does it scare you?
5. Are you messy or neat?
6. Do you plan your work well or do you do things at the last minute?
Scientists believe that answers to these types of questions tell us something about a person’s personality characters. After asking thousands of people thousands of questions, they’ve found that some personality characters seem to go together. This has led scientists to believe that there’re certain personality types. For example, shy people are often quiet. They have an introverted (内向的) personality type. The opposite is an extroverted (外向的) personality type — people who are outgoing, talkative and like being around other people.
1.What is personality?
2.Why is the human brain like a computer?
3.How do scientists study human behavior?
4.How many personality types are mentioned in this passage?
5.What decides your personality?(请自拟一句话作答)
【答案】1.Personality/It is the pattern of feelings, thoughts and behavior shown through people’s lives. 2.Because it controls the human body just as a computer controls a robot. 3.It includes watching people carefully and organizing personality tests. 4.Two./2. 5.The mind decides one’s personality.(言之成理即可)

1.根据原文“Personality is the pattern of feelings, thoughts and behavior shown through people’s lives.”可知,性格是通过人们的生活表现出来的感情、思想和行为的模式。故填Personality/It is the pattern of feelings, thoughts and behavior shown through people’s lives.

5.本小题无标准答案,学生言之成理即可。故参考答案为:The mind decides one’s personality.

When I studied at the Overseas Family School in Singapore, we held an activity called MAD Week in early April. “MAD” stands for “music, art and drama”. It is like a kind of art festival for students to perform themselves in front of people and enjoy the magic of art.

Tina is my sister. She used to be fat and others often laughed at her, so she became very shy. She was scared to say hello to strangers. She was afraid to ask simple questions and speak loud in front of others. It seemed that she felt afraid of everything in her life. She used to believe that she would be like this all her life.
But one day, her teacher encouraged Tina to change herself. He said,“If you can give it a try, you will have a chance to make a change. But if you never try, your life is only going to get worse.” Tina was deeply touched. She thought, “Why not have a try? After all, I had nothing to lose.”
The first thing Tina did was to lose weight. She had a strict diet and did exercise every day. After 6 months, she lost 90 pounds. This taught her that she could change herself.
A few months later, Tina took part in a singing competition at her school. For the first time, she was able to sing aloud in front of many people. In the end, she got a big prize!
After the competition, Tina made a to-do list and started changing. She tried her best to finish the things on the list one by one. When working on them, she became more and more confident.

That’s all, more than anything in the world.” she said. “OK, Tina, I once dreamed to be a reporter. We’d better find out if you’ve got any talent then, and check with our Mum and Dad first to make sure they don’t mind their daughter taking singing classes.”

(24-25九年级上·江苏扬州·期末)阅读短文,回答下面5个问题。(每题答案不超过6个词)
A designer is a person who has ideas. But that’s not all. A designer plans how to make those ideas happen. A set of steps should be followed.
Step One is defining (界定) a problem or need. A theater puts on a show. Actors wearing costumes act on a lighted stage. Set designers design the stage sets. Lighting designers decide what lights to use. Costume designers choose clothes for the actors to wear. Together they form the design team. They share the same need, which is making the show happen.
Step Two is defining a successful result. The desired result is different for different kinds of designers. A fashion designer designs clothing styles. Because stores need people to keep buying, fashion designers need to design clothes that people will buy. The clothes should be different from older clothes.
Step Three is to describe the situation as it is now. A landscape designer plans outdoor areas. The designer looks carefully at the piece of land. Is it flat or hilly? What kind of soil does it have? What plants grow well in that soil? How do people want to use this land? The designer uses all this information in planning.
Step Four is to understand the user. The designer needs to know who will use the product. Software designers write computer programs. They think about the user sitting in front of the screen.
Step Five is to make a detailed plan. Architects design buildings. They plan the size and shape of each room, and decide what materials to use. All the details are on a drawing called a blueprint. The builders will follow this blueprint. The building will be exactly like the plan.
Last but not least, designers should work with other people to turn the design into the real thing. Fashion designers need people to sew the clothes. Landscape designers need workers to plant the plants.
Designers are artists, scientists, and inventors. They work in the present, but they are planners for the future.
1.How many steps should the designer take to make his/her ideas happen?
2.How does the design team make the show happen on the stage in Paragraph 2?
3.Who should the designers try to understand?
4.What drawing is a new house built based on?

Why?

When I studied at the Overseas Family School in Singapore, we held an activity called MAD Week in early April. “MAD” stands for “music, art and drama”. It is like a kind of art festival for students to perform themselves in front of people and enjoy the magic of art.
At the beginning of MAD Week, we had to wear a hat to school. To my surprise, most of the students made creative hats by themselves. Some girls chose to work as a team and wore hats that looked like ice cream. One boy made a really tall hat that he could hardly wear! As for me, I used paper, feathers and even candies to make my hat creative.
I joined the “MAD Hat Parade”, too. Groups of students and teachers walked with their fantastic hats. It was great fun taking pictures with them, and I was so glad to have a “MAD Hat Day” like this. It’s really a good way for students to show their creative ideas and be interested in the arts.
1.When was MAD Week held?
2.What does “MAD” stand for?
3.Who made creative hats for most of the students?
4.List one of the activities the writer took part in during the week.
5.What do you think of this “MAD Week”?

One day, Tina told me her dream. “You promise not to laugh. I want to be a singer when I grow up,” she said. I didn’t laugh, instead I asked, “Why?” “I just do. That’s all, more than anything in the world.” she said. “OK, Tina, I once dreamed to be a reporter. We’d better find out if you’ve got any talent then, and check with our Mum and Dad first to make sure they don’t mind their daughter taking singing classes.”
No problem there. Next evening, Dad was driving Tina to her first singing lesson. The teacher liked Tina very much. She said that Tina was talented and her voice was good. After that, _____________.

5.What’s a proper title for this passage?
