I was the “I can’t” child-- the poster child for the word “can’t.” Whatever my mother told or asked me to do was always followed by my words, “I caaaan’t.” Very few tasks or goals that I set out to do were ever completed.
“I want you to read this article,” Mother began. “It’s about Marlo Thomas. She tells how a simple poem that she was forced to learn by her father changed her life. She went from saying ‘I can’t’ to ‘I can!’ According to this article, she was able to change her life, and her career, by learning the lessons in the poem.”
I thought it must be great to be Marlo! Beside her photo was the poem my mother had spoken of, a simple poem entitled “I Can.”
“I want you to memorize that poem,” Mother said firmly.
“Mamaaaaa” I complained. “I can’t learn that poem. It’s too loooong.”
“It’s not too long and yes, you can learn it. I want you to know it perfectly by this time tomorrow.”
I dropped my shoulders, turned and made my way back to my bedroom with the magazine in my small right hand. With a heavy heart, I lay on my bed, fell back against the cotton and began my task.
“‘can’t’ is a word that is the enemy of ambition,” I began. I repeated the line. I repeated it again and again until it firmly stamped in my heart. “An enemy waiting to jump on your strength of will ...” I continued until the following evening, when I proudly recited the poem that has continued to be my motto. Ms. Thomas did not know me, but her story forever changed my life.
Saying “I can” helped me to survive the worst moments of my life. Saying “I can” helped me to do things I would otherwise have thought out of my reach. A simple poem learned at seven is a poem that will sustain me to seventy-seven. Maybe even longer.
41. What does the author mean by saying she was the “poster child”?
A. Her pictures are often posted on the posters of different kinds.

B. She wrote an article about how to memorize poems.
C. She was deeply influenced by a poem.
D. She became a great woman under her father’s education.
43. Why did Mother want the author to memorize the poem?
A. She believed the poem could help change the author.
B. She wanted to set Marlo Thomas as an example for the author.
C. She hoped the author would become wiser by learning the poem.
D. She wanted the author to write a similar poem.
44. What does “I dropped my shoulders” imply?
A. I was not confident in remembering the poem.
B. I was angry with my mother.
C. I didn’t understand the poem.
D. I didn’t want to be a person like Marlo.
45. What is this story mainly about?

Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times there has been less coming and a lot more going. When the world was still populated by hunter-gatherers, small, tightly knit (联系) groups developed their own patterns of speech independent of each other. Some language experts believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.
Soon afterwards, many of those people started settling down to become farmers, and their languages too became more settled and fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade, industrialization, the development of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory education, especially globalisation and better communications in the past few decades, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.
At present, the world has about 6,800 languages. The distribution of these languages is hugely uneven. The general rule is that mild zones have relatively few languages, often spoken by many people, while hot, wet zones have lots, often spoken by small numbers. Europe has only around 200 languages; the Americas about 1,000; Africa 2,400; and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200, of which Papua New Guinea alone accounts for well over 800. The median number (中位数) of speakers is a mere 6,000, which means that half the world’s languages are spoken by fewer people than that.
Already well over 400 of the total of 6,800 languages are close to extinction (消亡), with only a few elderly speakers left. Pick, at random, Busuu in Camero on (eight remaining speakers), Chiapaneco in Mexico (150), Lipan Apache in the United States (two or three) or Wadjigu in Australia (one, with a question-mark): none of these seems to have much chance of survival.
46. What can we infer about languages in hunter-gatherer times?
A. They developed very fast. B. They were large in number.
C. They had similar patterns. D. They were closely connected.
47. Which of the following best explains “dominant” underlined in Paragraph 2?
A. Complex. B. Advanced. C. Powerful. D. Modern.
48. How many languages are spoken by less than 6,000 people at present?
A. About 6,800. B. About 3,400.
C. About 2,400. D. About 1,200.
49. Which language is spoken by the least number of people according to the passage?
A. Busuu in Cameroon. B. Chiapaneco in Mexico.
C. Lipan Apache in the United States. D. Wadjigu in Australia.
50. What is the main idea of the text?
A. New languages will be created.
B. People’s lifestyles are reflected in languages.
C. Human development results in fewer languages.
D. Geography determines language evolution.
D
If you seek happiness, then you need to know what happiness is for you. I don’t believe there is one universal definition of happiness. Happiness is a very subjective emotion, according to me. Put two people in identical situation: same amount of money, life experiences, etc. and you can be pretty sure that they both wouldn’t feel equally happy or equally sad. I believe this is so because there are two kinds of happiness. There is one kind of happiness, which is kind of universal and then there is the other kind, which is very individual to each one of us. It is this kind of happiness that I find more interesting.
The second kind of happiness that I talk about comes from our expectations out of our lives, which vary from person to person. For example, a person who expects a lot out of his or her life may find that happiness is hard to find. They are constantly in search of these things in life, which always seem to elude (逃避) them. Those things may be money or fame or power or any of the other pursuits (追求) that humans have, but it would be likely that such people are less likely to be happy, if their goals are not met. In most cases, even after their goals are met, they don’t find happiness, because they seek more—new goals, new wish lists, and it’s a seemingly never-ending process for them!
On the other hand, a person who takes life as it comes along and makes the best of each day is more likely to be happy every day. They have no pressure or goals to occupy their minds and they can achieve happiness from the simple pleasures of everyday life, finding love, making time for the family and kids, seeing their kids grow, etc. Of course, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have any expectations at all. You should keep those expectations reasonable and manageable.
51. Which of the following is the author’s opinion according to Paragraph 1?
A. Happiness has one universal definition.
B. Every individual has his own happiness.
C. There are no people who are really happy.
D. Happiness means having money and power.
52. What does the underlined part “these things” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to?
A. Daily demands. B. Life experiences.
C. Ideas about happiness. D. Expectations out of life.
53. Even if their goals are met, some people still don’t feel happy because _________.
A. they gave too much for their goals
B. they don’t know what happiness is
C. they have new goals that need achieving
D. they think sadness is a never-ending process
54. What kind of person is likely to be happy in the author’s opinion?
A. He who has few expectations. B. He who has no pressure or goals.
C. He who has a great ambition or dream. D. He who can find fun from his daily life.
55. The author writes this passage mainly to tell readers _________.
A. the definition of happiness
B. the importance of happiness
C. to enjoy every day to the fullest
D. to give up their dreams and be practical

第一节:阅读表达(共5个小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题
From time to time, life might provide a person with the present of a moment that changes everything. As for me, that came on a plane home in January, 2009. Frankly, as a lawyer, I specialized in corporate law in oil and gas projects. In fact, I’d grown to hate my job. It involved too much paperwork and loads of traveling, which I thought was fairly exhausting.
Actually, becoming a lawyer was unintended. I loved my school but it was competitive and students were destined for a good university, and then a graduate plan. That was the track I was on. After graduation, I became a lawyer, but that just made me trapped. I wanted to make a difference, but I had no idea what else I could do.
On that life-changing flight, I asked a stewardess to bring me a hot drink. When she returned, I couldn’t help crying. Hugging me, she said, “I don’t know what’s wrong but if you’re crying in business class, you need to change your life.”
Those words had a great effect on me. I couldn’t carry on in a job that made me so uncomfortable.
After much reflection, I resigned 18 months later. The last time I’d been happy was when I was volunteering at a school. Because of that, my friend Sophia kept telling me I’d love teaching. Then I contacted four schools and became a teacher in the end. No amount of planning would have prepared me for my first day as a teacher. It was stressful, but as I became familiar with the curriculum, I relaxed.
Five years on, I’m head of department. Watching my students develop is so rewarding and results day makes me burst with pride. I used to feel scared about the thought of becoming a more senior lawyer, but I’m so positive about the opportunities teaching can offer. I earn less now but I become richer in many ways.
Every single day, I feel excited to go to work.

“Mamaaaaa,” I complained.

C

【47题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“In recent centuries, trade, industrialization, the development of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory education, especially globalisation and better communications in the past few decades, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over. (近几个世纪以来,贸易、工业化、民族国家的发展和义务教育的普及,尤其是过去几十年的全球化和更好的通信,都导致了许多语言的消失,而英语、西班牙语和汉语等dominant语言正日益占据主导地位。)”可知,英语、西班牙语和汉语等这些语言逐渐占据主导地位,故dominant意思是“强大的,占主导地位的”,与Powerful意思相近。故选C。

They have no pressure or goals to occupy their minds and they can achieve happiness from the simple pleasures of everyday life, finding love, making time for the family and kids, seeing their kids grow, etc.

【59题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“Watching my students develop is so rewarding and results day makes me burst with pride. I used to feel scared about the thought of becoming a more senior lawyer, but I’m so positive about the opportunities teaching can offer. Or: She earns less but becomes richer in many ways.
I will choose a job that is related to my interest because the love for job brings the real happiness.
