Dear Judy,
I can't believe my daughter is old enough for a cell phone already.I'm considering
buying a cell phone for her,but I'm nervous.How can I keep her safe?Am I worrying
too much?
Nadine
Dear Nadine,
You're not worrying too much-that's for sure.
Cell phones can bring bad results to kids.Research shows that all kids who are
allowed to keep cell phones in their room overnight have replied()to a late-night
text message. It also shows that half of all kids say they are addicted()to their cell
phones and sleep badly because of that.Their parents agree, and 36%of parents say
they have daily arguments()with their children about their cell phones.
So it's normal to worry when your daughter is ready for her first cell phone, even if
you think she is responsible. The cell phone is an instrument of connection. It allows
people to stay in touch. However,it's also a symbol of separation().It means the
dangers in the outside world may do harm to your child, without you there to stop them.
Luckily, there's something you and your daughter can do to avoid the dangers. If
your daughter agrees to some rules, you can give her one cell phone. The following are
the rules I made for my kids. Why not make some like these?
Never use it during meals,in class or after 9 p.m.
Always ask before sending a message, photo or video.
·Never give the phone number or home address(地址)to strangers..
Leave the phone in the living room overnight.
Don't download apps without asking.

If you look around on the street, you can often see girls wearing a kind of traditional
Chinese dress normally with crossed collar(衣领)and long, big sleeves(袖子)around the
body.In fact,a new trend is coming in China-Guochao.
The word Guochao has appeared along with the growing idea of "Made in China".
"China has recently seen young people's increasing interest in Chinese brands and products
which include Chinese traditional style and culture. This is what is called Guochao,"China
Daily explained(解释).
Guochao got people's attention in 2018.Before that, famous foreign companies ruled the
world market. But that year,Chinese sportswear brand()Li-Ning changed things up.
During the 2018 Fashion Week,Li-Ning introduced its new collection which was in the
theme(主题)of the spirit of Taoism(道教).The collection not only had a popular look,
but also included traditional Chinese culture such as Chinese characters. It caught many
people's eyes at home and abroad at once.
Since then, the Guochao trend()has covered different areas and products, from
clothing to food and drinks, mobile phones and electric cars. However, behind all these
things lies one thing that won't change. That is people's pride in China's development and
their growing confidence in national culture.

“Have you ever heard that it's impossible to fold(折叠)a piece of paper
more than seven times?Actually,it is just a popular myth(不真实的事)
The myth refers to folding a piece of paper in half many times in any
direction. The paper is folded in half.Try it for yourself with a piece of notebook paper.
The first few folds are easy. But when you make the fifth and sixth folds, you'll notice that
it's increasingly(不断增加地)hard to fold the paper. Why does it happen?Because the
number of the layers()of paper doubles with each fold. For example, after the sixth
fold, you're left with 64 layers of paper. If you have strong hands, you may be able to
make that seventh fold.If you start with a piece of paper that is 0.01 centimeters thick(
)it'll be as thick as a notebook after seven folds. And it would seem impossible to make
more folds. At this point, you may be thinking that the paper-folding myth doesn't sound
much like a myth.
However,in 2002,a high school student named Britney Gallivan proved the idea
wrong.Britney successfully folded a 1.20-meter-long roll of toilet paper 12 times (note
that she used single-direction folding). She also developed a math rule. This is convenient.
It allows you to find out the maximum()number of possible folds based on paper
thickness,paper length,and direction of folding.
Since Britney's success, many people have managed to fold a single piece of paper
more than 7 times.Students even folded a piece of toilet paper a total of 13 times. The
toilet paper they used was about 4,000 meters long!
