V. Teaching Procedures
1. Lead - in
Show some pictures of famous amusement parks around the world, such as Disneyland, Universal Studios, etc. Then ask students: “Have you ever been to an amusement park? What was the most exciting ride you have ever tried? Share your experiences with your classmates.”
Let several students share their stories briefly. This activity can arouse students' interest and recall their relevant experiences, which is helpful for the understanding of the following reading material.
2. Pre - reading
Present the title “Fun Times Park — Always a Fun Time!” and the picture in 3a to the students. Ask them to predict the content of the conversation according to the title and the picture. Questions like “Where are the two speakers? What are they probably talking about?” can be asked to guide their prediction.
Teach the new words and phrases in the conversation. For example, use pictures to show the meaning of “scary” (a picture of a horror - themed ride in an amusement park), and explain “promise” with sentences like “I promise I will finish my homework on time.” Demonstrate “suggest” by giving examples: “I suggest we go to the library this afternoon.” Let students read the words and phrases several times to ensure correct pronunciation.
3. While - reading
Skimming: Let students read the conversation quickly and answer the following two questions:
What are the two main places Alice and He Wei talk about? (Space World and Water World)
What do they plan to do after the ride in Space World? (Go to Water World and then have dinner)
Scanning: Ask students to read the conversation again carefully and complete the following tasks:
Task 1: Find out all the sentences that ask for information and sentences that make suggestions. For example, sentences for asking for information: “I wonder where we should go next.” “Do you know where we can get some good food quickly?”; sentences for making suggestions: “How about that new ride over there?” “Why don't we come back here for dinner later?”
Task 2: Fill in the blanks according to the conversation. For instance:
At first, Alice thinks the new ride looks _____. (scary)
He Wei suggests they go to ______ Restaurant in Water World for dinner. (Water City)
Task 3: Analyze the language features of the sentences. Explain the structure and usage of “I wonder + wh - clause” (used to express a polite way of asking for information), “How about + doing sth.” (used to make a suggestion), “Why don't we + do sth.” (also for making suggestions in a more casual way)
Group Discussion: Divide students into groups of four. Pose a question: “If you were in an amusement park with your friends, what would you do if your friends were scared to try a new ride?” Let each group discuss and share their ideas. Each group selects a representative to report to the class. This can help students understand the text from different perspectives and also improve their communication and thinking abilities.
4. Post - reading
Sentence Rewriting: Let students do the exercise in 3b. They need to rewrite the questions or statements that ask for information in different ways. For example, “I wonder where we should go next.” can be rewritten as “Could you tell me where we could go next?” Walk around the classroom to offer individual guidance. After that, invite several students to write their answers on the blackboard and check the answers together. Explain the rules and common mistakes in sentence - rewriting.
Role - play: Arrange students to work in pairs. They are required to create a new dialogue based on the situation in an amusement park. One student acts as a visitor who is new to the park, and the other acts as a local or a staff member. They should use the sentence patterns they have learned to ask for information, make suggestions, etc. Then invite several pairs to perform their dialogues in front of the class. Other students listen carefully and give evaluations from aspects like language accuracy, fluency and naturalness.
5. Summary and Homework
Summary: Summarize the key points of this lesson with students. Review the new words, phrases and important sentence patterns for asking for information and making suggestions. Emphasize the importance of using polite language in communication.
Homework:
Ask students to write a short passage about their own experiences in an amusement park or a place - finding story, using at least three sentence patterns learned in this class.
Let students collect more expressions for asking for information and making suggestions in their daily life, either in English movies, TV shows or real - life conversations.
