Learning new languages can be empowering, opening doors to connect with people from different cultures. Recently, a man practicing Chinese gained widespread attention after visiting a local Lanzhou noodle restaurant and speaking the language in a truly memorable way. Canadian resident Cali Lopez shared a video of his interaction with a Chinese waitress and their authentic and curious exchange quickly won praise online.
The incident occurred in Saskatoon, one of Canada's largest cities, with a growing Chinese community. Cali appeared anxious and nervous at the Lanzhou noodle restaurant before a waitress approached him. Greeting her in her native language, he nearly left her in shock.
With a smile, Cali then politely asked the waitress if he could practice his Chinese and began ordering in her language, asking questions about the menu. He noticed a dish that caught his interest and asked in Chinese, “Is this sour pickle (泡菜) soup hot?” The waitress replied, “Yes, a little bit spicy.” Cali, who works as an English teacher, was fine with mild spice, replying,“Oh, I just want to order one.” When she asked about his other food preferences, he shared his desire for a dish with rice noodles.
The waitress then listed the restaurant's six types of noodles, including three round and three flat varieties. Cali appeared to struggle a bit while discussing the types of noodles in Chinese, requesting the waitress to point to the menu and explain each dish's preparation to help him order. After some thought, he chose the thinnest of the round noodles.
Curious about his language skills,Cali then asked,“Can you understand me?” and waited eagerly for her response. The waitress confirmed she could, leaving Cali visibly moved.
The one-minute video of this genuine and heartfelt exchange has received widespread praise on social media for recording a real, spontaneous (自发的) moment without any forced emotion.

Shane Gross is from Saskatchewan, Canada, a province far away from the sea, so his first underwater experiences were in a cold, green lake with a disposable film camera. Despite this, he’s always been fascinated by the ocean, especially sharks, and watched Jaws countless times. After backpacking through Australia in 2009 and diving along the way, he decided to pursue his passion seriously. In 2011, he moved to the Bahamas to work as a dive instructor, which allowed him to spend more time in the water and improve his photography skills.
In 2017, while diving at one of their regular spots, “Sea Garden”, Gross and his girlfriend encountered a turtle (海龟). They were deeply upset at the terrible scene—the turtle was trapped, struggling, and ultimately dying. Realizing there was nothing they could do to save it, Gross removed the abandoned fishing line wrapped around the turtle and documented the moment. His photograph later won first place in the conservation category of the 2019 International Ocean Art Underwater Photo Competition, bringing attention to the problem of sea waste that often goes unseen.
When asked about his approach to creating remarkable underwater photography Shane Gross advises underwater photographers to go beyond just one image. He encourages them to document the entire scene they’re passionate about, even if it means taking some shots above the water. Once you have a story to tell, create a shot list and keep shooting until you have recorded it fully.
For Shane, spending time in the ocean is deeply fulfilling. “I live a marine (海洋的) lifestyle,” he says. “But most people don’t share this connection.” To bridge this gap, he created Bahamas Underwater, a book combining stories and vivid imagery to introduce people to marine ecosystems and their wonders. Shane recommends that taking time to admire the breathtaking views of the ocean should be the initial step toward creating meaningful change — a shift from indifference to active care.
8. What can we learn about Shane Gross from paragraph 1?
A. He grew up in the coastal area. B. He longed to be a dive instructor.
C. He followed his childhood passion. D. He did academic research on sharks.
9. Why did Shane take a photo of the sea turtle?
A. To criticize overfishing. B. To protect natural habitats.
C. To save the injured animal. D. To highlight marine pollution.
10. What is the key to good underwater photography according to paragraph 3?
A. A large image. B. A unique scene. C. A complete story. D. A strong motivation.
11. What does Shane suggest as the first step toward caring for the ocean?
A. Promoting green lifestyles. B. Appreciating ocean’s beauty.
C. Sharing marine knowledge. D. Documenting nature’s wonders.
D
When consuming information, we try to acquire more signals and less noise. We feel like the more information we consume the more signals we receive. While this is probably true on an absolute basis, Nassim Taleb argues in the book Antifragile that it is not true on a relative basis. As you consume more data and the ratio (比率) of noise to signals increases, you know less about what’s going on and you are likely to cause more unintentional trouble.
The supply of information to which we are exposed under modernity is transforming humans from a calm person to a neurotic (神经质) one. For the purpose of our discussion, the first person only reacts to real information, and the second largely to noise. The difference between the two will show us the difference between noise and signals. Noise is what you are supposed to ignore; signals are what you need to heed.
In science, noise is a generalization beyond the actual sound to describe random information that is totally useless for any purpose, and that you need to clean up to make sense of what you are listening to. You can use and take advantage of noise and randomness, but noise and randomness can also use and take advantage of you, particularly with the data you get on the Internet or through other media. The more frequently you look at data, the more noise you are likely to get, and the higher the noise-to-signal ratio is.
Say you look at information on a yearly basis—the changes you see will all be large ones. The ratio of signals to noise is about one to one—this means that about half the changes are real improvements or degradations, and the other half come from randomness. But if you look at the very same data on a daily basis, the composition would change to 95 percent noise and 5 percent signals, and the changes you see daily will certainly be small.
12. What opinion does Nassim Taleb probably hold?
A. It’s hard to know the real truth. B. The noise-to-signal ratio is changing.
C. The information explosion can be harmful. D. More information brings more signals.
13. What does the underlined word “heed” probably mean in paragraph 2?
A. Notice. B. Analyse. C. Solve. D. Describe.
14. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Causes and harms of more noise. B. The meaning and impact of noise.
C. The relationship between noise and signals. D. Advantages and disadvantages of noise.
15. How should we handle information according to the author?
A. Check it frequently. B. Make use of online data.
C. Look at key changes. D. Focus on all changes in it.

One morning in December 2023, my co-worker Al’s email caught my attention: “Found: $20 bill on the floor in the lab at the end of the hall from the main building. See Alan W. to claim.”
Al’s email reminded me of an incident that occurred on Christmas 40 years ago. Before heading out for Christmas shopping that evening, I had withdrawn $400 from the bank, foolishly stuffing eight fifty dollar bills in my front trousers pocket. On my way to Oakbrook Shopping Center, I stopped at SportMart to look at skiing equipment for my son.
Returning to the car, I discovered the bills were gone. This was $400 in 1983—a huge sum of money! Feeling terrible, I turned my pockets inside out, thinking how I could have been so careless! I turned on my car headlights and desperately looked for the bills in the snow covering the parking area, but found nothing. This was the Chicago area. It was said that people in neighborhoods were not in the habit of turning in cash they found. At the thought of this, I was so sad. With low expectations, I returned to SportMart and started telling my awful tale to the store manager.
Hearing I’d lost cash, he interrupted, stating he needed to page(呼叫 ) the store quickly. Someone had earlier reported finding money. The customer wouldn’t say how much or leave the money with the manager, but left his name. The manager was concerned he may have left.
I stopped breathing as the page broadcast. Minutes passed, and I was about to give up hope when a man and a boy approached the manager. The manager pointed them in my direction. He was in his mid-thirties, with dark hair, a winter jacket, and a son about 10 or 12 He smiled, “The manager tells me you lost some money. Can you describe the amount and denominations(面额)?”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
I told him I’d lost $400, eight fifties.

When asked about his approach to creating remarkable underwater photography, Shane Gross advises underwater photographers to go beyond just one image.
C 9. D 10. C 11. B

The supply of information to which we are exposed under modernity is transforming humans from a calm person to a neurotic (神经质的) one.
C 13. A 14. B 15. C

根据第一段中的“We feel like the more information we consume the more signals we receive.(我们觉得我们消耗的信息越多,接收到的信号就越多。)”和“Nassim Taleb argues…you know less about what’s going on and you are likely to cause more unintentional trouble.(纳西姆·塔勒布在《反脆弱》一书中辩称,在相对基础上并非如此。随着您消耗的数据越来越多,噪声与信号的比率(比率)越来越高,您对正在发生的事情的了解就越来越少,并且可能会造成更多无意的麻烦。)”可知,纳西姆·塔勒布认为接触到过多的信息反而会使人们更不知道发生了什么,也可能引发更多无意识的麻烦。由此可知,纳西姆·塔勒布可能认为信息爆炸可能是有害的。故选C。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中的“For the purpose of our discussion, the first person only reacts to real information, and the second largely to noise. The difference between the two will show us the difference between noise and signals. Noise is what you are supposed to ignore.( 就我们讨论的目的而言,第一人只对真实信息作出反应,第二人主要对噪音作出反应。两者之间的区别将向我们展示噪声和信号之间的区别。噪音是你应该忽略的。)”可知,本段提到这两种人的不同反应会向我们展示信息“噪声”和“信号”的区别,信息“噪声”是我们应该忽视的,因此与之相对的“信号”应是需要我们留意或关注的信息。由此可推知,heed意为“关注,注意”。故选A。
根据文章第三段“In science, noise is a generalization beyond the actual sound to describe random information that is totally useless for any purpose, and that you need to clean up to make sense of what you are listening to. You can use and take advantage of noise and randomness, but noise and randomness can also use and take advantage of you, particularly with the data you get on the Internet or through other media. The more frequently you look at data, the more noise you are likely to get, and the higher the noise-to-signal ratio is.(在科学中,噪音是一种超越实际声音的概括,它描述的是对任何目的都毫无用处的随机信息,你需要清理这些信息才能理解你所听到的内容。你可以使用和充分利用噪音和随机性,但噪音和随机性也可以使用和充分利用你,特别是你在互联网上或通过其他媒体获得的数据。查看数据的频率越高,可能得到的噪声就越多,噪信比也就越高。)”可知,本段主要讲述了噪声的定义和影响。故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Say you look at information on a yearly basis—the changes you see will all be large ones. The ratio of signals to noise is about one to one—this means that about half the changes are real improvements or degradations, and the other half come from randomness. But if you look at the very same data on a daily basis, the composition would change to 95 percent noise and 5 percent signals, and the changes you see daily will certainly be small.(假设你看的是每年的信息——你看到的变化都是很大的。

后文“Imagine a world where AI handles your household chores. Smart appliances equipped with AI can sort wash and fold laundry, while others take care of the dishes and clean the floors. (想象这样一个世界:AI帮你打理所有家务。搭载AI的智能家电能自动分类清洗并叠好衣物,其他设备则负责洗碗拖地)”举例说明AI如何帮助处理家务,此处作为段首句,应该是概括性的句子,点明AI的本质,因此G项“The essence of AI is to take over repetitive and time-consuming tasks. (AI的本质是接管重复性任务)”符合语境,统领后文,其中的repetitive and time-consuming tasks和后文的household chores呼应。故选G。
【17题详解】
前文“By freeing us from the routine tasks, AI allows us to spend time and energy on what truly inspires us. (通过将我们从日常琐事中解放出来,AI让我们能把时间和精力投入到真正激发灵感的事物上)”指出AI节省时间,让人专注于真正重要的事,后文“It enriches human life by allowing us to focus on what truly matters. (它让我们能够专注于真正重要的事物,从而丰富了人类的生活)”提到AI丰富人类生活,此处应该是AI如何提升生活质量的过渡句,因此F项“This transforms AI from a tool into an enabler of a more fulfilling life. (这使AI从工具转变为更充实生活的推动者)”符合语境,强调AI的角色转变,承前启后,其中的This指代前一句内容。故选F。
【18题详解】
前文“AI also has the potential to bring about changes to the way we work, perhaps giving us the opportunity to work less. (与此同时,AI还可能改变我们的工作方式,甚至可能让我们减少工作时长)”指出AI改变工作方式,后文“In this way, perhaps you can trial five-hour workday instead of working the traditional eight. (如此一来,你或许可以尝试每天工作五小时,而非传统的八小时工作制)”举例5小时工作制,此处需说明AI如何实现这一点,因此D项“AI can do simple and routine tasks you perform as part of your job. (AI可以完成你工作中简单且重复的任务)”符合语境,解释AI接管常规任务,承前启后。故选D。
【19题详解】
前文“While AI offers numerous advantages, there is a risk associated with over-reliance on these technologies. (尽管AI带来诸多优势,但过度依赖这项技术也存在风险)”指出过度依赖AI有风险,后文“When AI becomes the primary source of ideas and innovation, the uniqueness of human creativity may be lost. (当AI成为创意和创新的主要来源时,人类创造力的独特性可能会消失)”具体说明人类创造力有消失的风险,此处应点明对创造力的危害,因此E项“Dependence on AI for creative work can decrease human creativity. (依赖AI完成创造性工作会削弱人类创造力)”符合语境,承前启后,其中的Dependence和前文的over-reliance呼应,human creativity在后文有同词复现。故选E。
【20题详解】
前文“The use of AI in our lives should be approached with a balance between human well-being and creativity. While AI handles the ordinary, humans need to thrive in areas that require critical thinking and innovation. (在我们生活中运用AI时,需要在人类福祉与创造力之间寻求平衡。当AI处理常规事务时,人类更应专注于需要批判性思维和创新精神的领域)”指出需平衡AI的使用,此处应陈述平衡的意义,因此B项“The balance ensures AI serves humans, rather than as opponents. (这种平衡确保AI服务于人类,而非成为对立面)”符合语境,承接前文,其中的balance在前文有同词复现。故选B。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;

I told him I’d lost $400, eight fifties. “That’s good enough for us,” he said, reached into his pocket and pulled out the roll of bills. Touching the bills carrying the father’s body temperature, I felt waves of warmth on this cold night. I took out two bills and tried to hand them to his son, but his son shook his head. “You wouldn’t want to ruin Christmas for me and my son, would you? They are yours, and my son and I won’t take them,” the father said.
They left before I could ask them their names. This is the most regrettable thing for me. I was too excited at the time and just kept thanking them without asking their names in a timely manner. However, while I don’t have their names, I’ll never forget the Christmas gift from the two total strangers. Who said that in the Chicago area, people didn’t return money when they found it? In fact, there are many honest and kind people around us. Al’s email has also proved this point.
