Page 1
the highest
lies
主语:The famous monastery(单数)
crossing
核心名词:travellers(旅客)
which
These friendly dogs were used as watchdogs...
从句:______ were first brought from Asia → 缺主语指代"dogs"
through
"across"(表面横穿,如across the road)
less dangerous
(Now that a tunnel has been built)
when / whenever / if
when
"sent out when a traveller is in difficulty"(最常用)
whenever
if
"are sent out... if..."(符合救援条件触发机制)
is visited
"during summer months" 表规律性事件 → 一般现在时(is visited)
privacy
→ privacy (n.)
parties
B. A famous monastery
A. A famous hiking route
C. A famous mountain
D. A famous dog story
B. A famous monastery
服务于修道院的救援工具("sent out by monks")
季节管理的附属细节("kept in enclosure" vs "allowed to wander")

Liberation from Materialism
The limited space of a van encourages a minimalist lifestyle, where experiences are valued over material things. 19 With minimal monthly expenses, such as parking fees and fuel costs, van users can spend their money on experiences instead of paying high rent or buying a house. This mobile living is supported by the de-growth movement, which believes that economies should focus on meeting basic needs rather than on buying more things or constant spending.
Exploration and Flexibility
The ability to follow adventure wherever it takes you is one of the most amazing aspects of living in a van. You can choose to wake up at dawn over the ocean one day and find yourself in a forested mountainside the next. Living in a van frequently involves being close to the outdoors surrounded by the beauty of nature. 20
Minimal Ecological Footprint
21 They take along solar panels and efficient water systems, further reducing their effect on the environment. People who choose to live in mobile homes believe that eventually, global warming and extreme weather might bring an end to sedentary (定居) living patterns.
Through the open road, the beauty of nature, and the friendship of fellow adventurers, van life presents a unique path for enriching the human experience. 22

Lesson8 A famous monastery
The St. Bernard's Pass is visited by thousands of people in summer, who cross the Pass in cars. Because there are so many people about, the dogs are kept in a special enclosure. As the temperature in winter falls to -30°, there are few visitors, so the monks prefer this season. The dogs are also free to wander outside their enclosure. Parties of young skiers regularly visit the monastery in winter, during Christmas and Easter when they are warmly welcomed. (80 words)
作文:
Rescue
One very cold morning, a monk took two St. Bernard's dogs out for exercise. He immediately noticed that the dogs were very restless. Suspecting a traveller might be in difficulty, the monk returned to the monastery to organize a search party.
The two dogs led four monks through the snow. Two of the monks pulled a sledge behind them, in case they needed it. There had been very high winds the previous night, but now everything was still and visibility was bad because there was a heavy fog. Moreover, the temperature had fallen to -20°.The dogs led the monks towards the Pass and as the monks got near, they heard cries in the distance. The dogs soon found a man who was trapped under the snow and immediately dragged him out. The man was alive, and took him back to the monastery.
The man was unconscious, but he soon recovered in the warm atmosphere of the monastery where he was given plenty of hot drinks and food. When the traveller was able to speak, the monks listened with interest as he told them what had happened the previous night. (200 words)
