The Fun They Had
1 In her diary, on 17 May 2157, Margie wrote: “Today, Tommy found a real book!"
2 It was a very old book. They turned the old, yellow pages. It was strange to read the words. They stood still on the pages, instead of moving across a screen.
3 “What a waste!" said Tommy. “When you finish the book, you just throw it away, I guess. Our television screen must have a million books on it! I wouldn't throw it away."
4 Margie asked, “What's the book about?'
5 “School."
6 “Why would anyone write about school?”
7 “Because it's an old kind of school, from hundreds of years ago They had a teacher, but it was a person. There was a special building and all the kids and teachers went there.”
8 Margie wanted to read about those funny schools. But her mother called, "Margie! School!"
9 Margie's classroom was right next to her bedroom. Her teacher was a machine. It was on and waiting for her. The screen was lit up. The machine said: “Today's lesson is on maths. Please put yesterday's homework in the opening.”
10 Margie did so sadly. She was thinking about the old schools. All the kids from the neighbourhood came and laughed and shouted in the playground. They sat together in the classroom, and went home together after school.
11 And the teachers were people...
12 Margie was thinking about how the students must have loved school in the old days. She was thinking about the fun they had.
Adaptation from "The Fun They Had" by Isaac Asimov

China has changed a lot in the years since I first moved here. One of the developments is cashless payment (无现金支付), which has 1 the way we live and shop.
China is not the 2 country to have cashless payment. I used a debit card ( 借记卡) to 3 things without cash for years in the US. But now I can use my phone instead. It’s super easy and 4 .
One of the things I like most is that I can send and receive money 5 to and from my friends. That’s because it makes it so much easier to share the bill when we eat out together.
But like all technology, cashless payment has some 6 as well. What happens if your phone gets lost or stolen? There are also times when your phone’s mobile Internet connection, 7 the store’s Internet connection, might not work.
Not long ago, I went to a nearby convenience store (便利店) to buy some snacks. But when I got there, I found that the store’s cashless payment system didn’t work and they could only 8 cash. I didn’t have any cash with me, so I had to 9 and leave without any snacks.
So although cashless payment is convenient, you should 10 carry a bit of cash in order to avoid any possible inconvenience.

A
Technology can be a great way to learn. Apps, games, and websites make learning fun. But it’s easy to spend too much time looking at screens (屏幕). So, it’s important for students of all ages to know how to use technology the right way.
Our brain works differently when we read on a screen compared to reading a book. Screens have things that can take our attention away. Reading a book helps us understand better and remember things more easily. Writing by hand is also better for our brain than typing ( 打字). When we write, we think more about what we’re writing, which is harder than just typing.
Spending too much time on screens can be bad for kids. It can make it harder to focus (集中), do well in school, sleep, and exercise. Too much time with technology can also make it harder for kids to make friends in real life, which can make them feel lonely.
It’s not always clear if technology helps us learn better. Technology can be great for learning, but it can also be dangerous. Parents and teachers can’t stop kids from using technology, but they can help them know when and how to use it the right way.
1. What does the writer think of apps and websites?
A. They are simple. B. They are boring.
C. They are useless. D. They are interesting.

Technology is developing fast and it has become an important part of our life. Then what will the world be like in the future?
3-D food will be both delicious and nutritious We can use 3-D printers to print some basic materials. And we can go further. Scientists believe that we just need to turn on a printer in the kitchens and then we can enjoy our favourite food whenever we like.
The 5G network will allow many more people to get information. Big companies like China Mobile and China Unicom will start to offer 5G. It is said that 5G promises download speeds 10 to 20 times faster than 4G. For example, we can download a film within just 1 second. But with a 4G network, it takes a few minutes. There will be much bandwidth ( 宽带) and we can get unlimited information.
Underwater cities will provide more space. The earth is becoming more and more crowded. We may turn to underwater homes, which will be built as low as 15 kilometers below the sea. And the different temperatures at the different depths ( 深度) of the sea can be used to provide power for the homes.
Space tours will be a piece of cake. For us common people on the earth, the dream of travelling around space will come true. In the coming years, spacecraft will be as popular as buses, trains and planes. We can leave our home and enter space to take an adventure (冒险). And even we will get used to living there.
A robot will be a part of life. Robots can do many of the same things as we humans do like driving cars. But they will be used in other areas as well. They will be able to think. They can tell the difference between right and wrong. They can feel sadness or joy. When we are lonely, they can have a talk with us like real friends.
In a word, just as Jules Verne said, “Anything one man can imagine, other men can make it real.”

Smart homes are becoming more and more popular these days. What is a smart home? A smart home is a living space with advanced technology. It allows you to control different devices (装置) in your home by just tapping on your smartphone—whether you’re at home or on your way to work.
Smart homes include smart devices and systems, such as locks, fridges, bulbs, washing machines...You may wonder how they work. Smart speakers are used to play music or according to your schedule, smart fridges might suggest recipes and even order foods you need. All these devices work together as one to make your home smarter and your life...
What are the advantages of a smart home? Firstly, it is convenient. You can control your home with smartphones or voices. Secondly, it’s helpful to avoid the unnecessary waste, so it possibly benefits the environment. Thirdly, if anything unusual happens around your home, the systems may begin to work to protect you and your home immediately.
However, it may not be for everybody. Smart devices are usually more expensive than traditional ones. What’s more, smart home systems depend on connectivity and data (数据) collection, so privacy concerns may arise.
Each coin has two sides, and so do smart homes. It’s up to you to design your own living environment.
1. What can you use to control different devices in a smart home?
A. A TV remote control. B. A computer keyboard.
C. A smartphone. D. A traditional phone.
2. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a function of smart fridges?
A. Playing music. B. Suggesting recipes.
C. Ordering foods you need. D. Working with other devices.
3. What might happen when something unusual appears around your home in a smart home?
A. The devices will stop working.
B. The systems will work to protect you and your home at once.
C. You will be told after several hours.
D. You need to call the police by yourself.
Mr. Guo is a teacher from Xi’an. He asked his students to hand in their homework through a QR code ( 二维码). “We spent an hour or two in class learning how to generate ( 使产生) the codes, and in the end everything gets easier,” said Guo. “When students finish the homework, they keep it on WeChat. Then, each student makes his own QR code and gives it to me.”
The QR codes can be sent to Mr. Guo by email, QQ and WeChat. When Guo scans ( 扫描) his students’ QR codes, their homework appears on his phone. He finds that their homework becomes more creative, with many pictures, music and even videos.
Guo’s students like the new way and think it is interesting. “We are living in the information age. Many students like to work with computers because it makes learning more fun,” said Tingting, a student of Guo’s. Guo said, “It is worth trying to use new technology in education because education itself is a kind of creation. I don’t want my students to fall behind the times.”
However, some parents are worried. They are afraid that their children will spend too much time on computers. But in fact, it’s unnecessary. Students still need to look up information in books and write it down when they do their homework. Also for teachers, it allows them to check the students’ work at any time. And it’s also an easy way to share homework with other students.
1. How do Mr. Guo’s students hand in their homework?
_____________________________________________________________________
2. What do Mr. Guo’s students think of the new way to hand in homework?

A
Technology can be a great way to learn.

根据“Apps, games, and websites make learning fun.”
B
