I am not very good at languages. But next month, I’m going to Congo in Africa, and I want to learn Lingala, one of the local languages, for basic conversations. I wasn’t sure how I could do this until I found Memo, an app to learn foreign languages. Now I’m using some short breaks to learn Lingala on Memo. It feels just like a game.
“People often stop learning things because they feel they’re not getting any growth or because it all feels like too much hard work,” says Ed Cooke, one of the people who created Memo. “We’re trying to create a kind of learning experience that is fun and something you’d want to do.”
Memo is fun. It gives you a few new words to learn, and these are “seeds”(种子)that you plant in your “greenhouse”. When you work on the words, you “water your plants”, and they grow. When the app believes that you have really remembered a word, it moves the word to your “garden”. You get points as your garden grows, so you can compare yourself with other Memo users. You go to the next level when you get a high score. If you forget to log in(登录), the app informs you to “water your plants”.
The app uses two rules about learning. The first is that people remember things better when they connect them to a picture in their mind. Memo translates words into your own language, but it also encourages you to use “mems”—pictures that help you remember new words. You can use mems that other users have created, or you can create your own. The second rule is to have a break between studying activities. You should stop after studying words and then come back to them later. Memo helps you with this because you only use it for five or ten minutes a day.
I’ve learned hundreds of Lingala words with Memo. I know this won’t make me a perfect speaker, but I hope I can do more than just smile and nod when I meet people in Congo. Now, I need to go and water my vocabulary!
31. Ed Cooke created Memo to help useres to ________.
A. spend more time learning B. increase vocabulary faster
C. do more vocabulary practice D. find learning more enjoyable
32. What does “water your plants” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Find new words to learn. B. Get a high score in a test.
C. Practise the words you’re learning. D. Compare your score with other users’.
33. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The writer can have conversations in Lingala freely.
B. Users can only use the “mems” created.
C. Studying without breaks can help remember new words better.
D. Making connections between words and pictures improves learning.

Clara has worked as an English teacher in France for more than twenty years. Recently, she shared her own story with a Chinese girl Joyce, the chief editor of the school newspaper.
Joyce: Good afternoon, Mrs. Clara. I’ve learned that you are from Germany. As an experienced English teacher, you must have several good ways of learning English. Could you share some with us?
Clara: Well, I started learning English when I was about six or seven years old. A new language school opened near my home. I started attending classes twice a week, together with some neighborhood friends. I enjoyed these classes. During my teenage years, I attended several international youth meetings. I also went to Australia as an exchange student. I learned a lot from communicating(交流)with native English speakers.
Joyce: No wonder that you speak English just like a native speaker. Then what’s the best part of being an English teacher?
Clara: I have met many wonderful people throughout my career(职业生涯). Teachers are a fun group of people. They often get excited about challenge(挑战)(though they might complain a bit at first). Many teachers are creative. They always find a way to make things work. I’ve learned a lot from them. And then there are the students. There is nothing better in life than to see them realize their dreams and achieve something they have worked hard for.
Joyce: You are really a good teacher. What advice do you always give to your students?
Clara: I don’t know if you’ll call it advice, but it’s a truth to live by: As a language learner, you have to be comfortable with making mistakes. No one can learn to speak a language well overnight. You need to speak a little more every day.
Joyce: Thank you for your advice. I believe it can help the schoolmates who want to improve their English a lot.

I’d not heard of the word“slashie”until a couple of days ago. It’s really funny how new words go mainstream(主流). But, well, every day is a school day.
We all know slash is“/”, so a slashie means a person with more than one job. Some people think slashies are those who can not find a full-time job, or people who are lazy and don’t want to work full time. ___▲___ . As long as the young would like to try, there are plenty of full-time jobs here. And some slashies actually work even longer hours and have to be on call during weekends. Then why are people becoming slashies?

Some slashies work more than one job because they need money, but many app ear to be doing so for more creative reasons. They can test a new idea without jumping straight into it and taking the full risk. They are more experienced and prefer to try something new. Besides, they won’t do anything long enough to get bored with it. Sally Gray is a so-called slashie. Times have changed, but falling asleep in class is still a usual thing among students.
Why do students sometimes fall asleep in class? An obvious(明显的)reason is lack(缺乏)of sleep. However, there are also causes for getting too little sleep.
Homework is a daily thing for most students, one that can take three to four hours per night to finish it. A student who wants to be able to take part in any activity besides homework must stay up late to fit everything in. Club activities, sports, computer-game playing, and TV viewing, for example, all make students have less time for both homework and sleep. Sometimes students lack sleep because of after-school jobs for their families.
Physical(身体的)problems can also cause students to fall asleep in class. Insomnia(失眠), which may keep a student up at night, causing exhaustion(疲惫不堪)during class hours, is a serious problem. Medical evidence(证据)also supports the idea that each person has a body clock that helps to decide his or her sleep pattern(模式). Unluckily, these body clocks don’t always go well with their school timetables.
The effect(影响)of falling asleep in class can be quite serious. First of all, sleeping in class is not a good way to endear(使受喜爱)yourself to teachers. And students may make jokes about those who sleep in class. However, the most serious effect of sleeping in class is missing out on important points. In the long run(从长远看), sleepers may end up failing classes.
Since students are probably not going to deal with the problem, falling asleep in class will probably remain an all-too-common thing. It will continue until more teens find a way to balance their personal and social lives with school and work on their own, while still finding enough time to sleep.
Introduction

Effects

▲___88___ students will laugh at those who sleep in class.
▲Students who sleep too much in class may ___89___ in their study.

16. 句意:你有没有见过这样的广告:六周学会一门外语,否则就退款?know知道;learn学会;touch触摸,感动;feel感觉。根据“a foreign language”可知,是指“学”一门外语语,故选B。
17. 句意:当然,事情从来不会像那样发生。can’t不能;always总是;never从不;often经常。根据“Of course”和语境可知,作者对“六周学会一门外语”是不赞同的。can’t是情态动词,后跟动词原形,空格后的happens是三单形式,故不能用can’t,故选C。
18. 句意:唯一容易学的语言就是母语。easily容易地;difficult困难的;able能够;easy容易的。根据题干可知,这里需要填入一个形容词充当the only language的后置定语。结合“mother language”可知,母语容易学,故选D。

22. 句意:每年都有数百万人开始学习外语。million前有具体数字或a时,million不加s,后面也没有of,如a million, two million。million后有of时,million要加s,millions of意为“数百万的”,故选D。
23. 句意:有些人在家看书和听磁带,有些人去上夜校或看电视节目。without没有;with和,用;in用(后跟材料);by通过某种途径。根据“Some people try at home ... books and tapes”可知,有些人在家用书和磁带学习外语,with表示“用”时,后跟具体的工具,故选B。

【答案】31. D 32. C 33. D

33. 细节理解题。根据“The first is that people remember things better when they connect them to a picture in their mind.”可知,在单词和图片之间建立联系有助于学习,故选D。

阅读下面短文,根据所读内容,在文章空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填一个单词。
The effects(影响)of falling asleep in class can be quite serious. First of all, sleeping in class is not a good
way to endear(使受喜爱)yourself to teachers.
