A new study shows that kids do get new knowledge(知识) and learn new skills faster than grown-ups.It all comes down to something in the brain called GABA,which helps newly learnt material stick in the brain.Scientists found GABA levels(水平) go up fast in the brains of children of primary school age while they are learning new tasks or information. However,GABA levels in the brains of adults, aged 18 to 35,don’t change during or after lessons in new tasks and information.

“Our results show that children of primary school age can learn more within a given period of time than adults,”said Takeo Watanabe from Brown University in the USA.
Dr Sebastian Frank, from the University of Regensburg in Germany, said their findings agreed with the common view that children outperformed adults in their learning abilities.“GABA plays a key role in making learning efficient(效率高的),” added Dr Frank.

The scientists suggested teachers and parents should give children as many chances as possible to develop new skills, from learning the times table to riding a bike.Professor Watanabe said the findings could also be used to help adults learn more efficiently.“For example,a new technology or treatment could be developed to improve the level of GABA in the brains of adults.”
