Different countries have different customs. I think it's necessary for you to know something about other countries’ 1 and customs.
I study in Virginia, the US. During my time in the US,I know that American boys are different from Chinese boys.
Know how to knot(系) a tie. In the US, every boy above school age wears suits(正装)when they go to weddings. My friend, Madison, from Virginia says it 2 politeness to others. But in China I often see many boys, even men, go to a wedding in a T-shirt and jeans.
Be a gentleman. I know in China some boys are still proud of being strong. But in the US it's not enough;a good boy should also be polite. Here are two 3 : holding the door for people behind you and giving the seat on a bus to old people.
Learn something about football and baseball. Chinese boys like playing ping-pong,basketball and football, but American boys love playing football and baseball. They get very happy when they play and watch these sports. It's not necessary to be a fan of football or watch TV programs about baseball games all the time. But 4 watch the sports with other boys, at least learning some rules would help.
However, all this doesn't mean that the American way is always the right way. We sometimes need to know something 5 another culture, but we don't need to follow it if it makes you uncomfortable. Have fun along the way!

Ⅰ. Choose the best answers(根据以下内容选择最恰当的答案)
There are many differences between British English and American English. I used to teach a course about the differences between the two. We speak English on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean but we have many differences in our common language. We have examples of the same words having very different meanings, differing spellings of the same words as well as completely different words for the same things. Here are some examples.
A cookie in the US is called a biscuit in the UK. A biscuit in the US is a small cake in the UK. Crisps in the UK, are known as chips, but we British people eat a plate of chips that you call fries in the US. In the UK,a pie can be made from either meat or fruit, while in the US pies are normally made from fruit. Pot pies are made from meat. Most things are measured in grams and kilograms in the US, not pounds and ounces.
One very obvious(明显的) difference is the side of the road we each choose to drive on. Petrol in the UK is gas in the US. The place where we fill up our cars, in the UK, is a garage; while in the US, it's a gas station. The term garage is also used as a place to store your car next to or close by your house. In the UK we call a lorry what is known as a truck in the US.
An elevator in the US is called a lift here, and the first floor in the US, is called the ground floor here, so many visitors get off on the wrong floor in British hotels.
I could continue with this. There are countless examples of differences within our one shared language. With so many differences, no wonder it's hard to understand each other well.
( )1. The passage is mainly about the differences between British English and American English in .
A. vocabulary B. grammar C. sound D. spelling
( )2. It's implied in the passage that the author may be .
A. a driver from the US B. a cook from the US
C. a teacher from the UK D. a gas station worker from the UK

A. language differences don't affect understanding
B. the same words in the two different types of English may have different spellings
C. there will be fewer differences between American English and British English in the future
D. it is impossible that some Americans get off on the wrong floor in British hotels
)4. What can we learn from the passage?
A. “Elevator” is commonly used in the UK.
B. Pies mean the same thing in the UK and the US.
C. In the UK, things are measured in pounds and ounces.
D. British and American people drive on the same side of the road.
( )5. Which of the following is WRONG according to the passage?
A. Petrol in the UK is gas in the US.
B. Fries in the US are chips in the UK.
C. A cookie in the US is a biscuit in the UK.
D. A gas station in the UK is a garage in the US.
Ⅱ. Choose the best answer to complete the passage(选择最恰当的选项完成短文)
A good dictionary is an important tool. It will tell you not only what a word means but also how it is used. A dictionary needs to be printed again about every ten years. Languages develop and a good dictionary must 1 these new changes.
A new English dictionary will only tell you 2 most people use the language to-day. It will not tell you what is right or wrong. It may tell you the right time to use a word. If only a few people use a word,a dictionary will either tell you this or not list it.
Every dictionary will tell you many interesting facts. If you type a word and the word is too long, 3 in your dictionary. All dictionaries show you where to break a word. And they also show you how a word is spoken.
Every dictionary, of course, tells you what a word means. But some words, like“get”or“take”, may have lots of meanings. In some dictionaries, the 4 meanings are often listed first. In 5 , the newest meanings are listed last. So before you use your dictionary, you should always read the front part. This part explains how to use it.
Some dictionaries also show you where a word comes from. Do you know that the word“brand”(烙印) comes from an old word? This old word means“to burn”. This is because hundreds of years ago people burned their names on tables or boats to show who 6 them. They also burned their own names on their farm animals before they would not be stolen.
Your dictionary also has a lot of other interesting facts in it. After you have learned to use a dictionary, it can become your best useful book.
