There are many kinds of parrots. Some are quite big, but others are very small. People like them because
they often have beautiful, bright colours and also because some of them can talk.
No one knows why some parrots can talk. Most other birds cannot. Some people have the idea that parrots
can talk because they have big, thick tongues. However, there are birds that can talk without big, thick tongues,
as well as birds that cannot talk with big, thick tongues.
Parrots usually don't know what they are saying when they talk. They are only copying the sounds they hear.
However, they know when to say some words, such as “hello”and“goodbye”.
Most parrots come from hot countries, but they are adaptable(有适应能力的)and can live anywhere. This is
one reason why sailors(水手)like to take parrots with them on long trips. Perhaps the other reason is that they
want someone or something that they can talk with.
( )5.How do parrots say most of the words?

( )8.Where can we find the passage?
A.In a storybook. B.In a guidebook.
C.In a history book. D.In a science book.
C
In the story“Snow White”,the queen decides to kill Snow White and for all with an
apple dipped(蘸)in deadly poison(毒药). Thanks to seven helpful dwarves and a handsome
prince, Snow White gets well again.
But the queen doesn't need to go to all that trouble. In fact, apples—along with many
common fruits we eat—are already poisonous! But don't be afraid. The flesh won't harm you.
It's only the seeds that you need to avoid.
seed flesh
Apples belong to a plant family called Rosaceae. This group also includes peaches, plums, apricots, and
cherries. The seeds or stones of all these fruits have a chemical called amygdalin(苦杏仁苷).Inside an animal's
stomach, amygdalin turns into a strong poison called cyanide(氰化物).And cyanide can make people and
animals very sick,or even kill them. Still, don't worry if you accidentally eat a few apple seeds. Each seed has
only a very tiny amount of poison. You'd have to eat a large bowl of seeds to feel any effect.
Why would a tree make poisoned seeds? To stop animals from nibbling on them!Amygdalin tastes terrible.
It's also found in leaves and other parts of fruit trees. If a cow eats apple leaves, it gets a bad taste and an upset
stomach(肠胃不适). Animals soon learn to leave those trees alone. Thanks, amygdalin!
Mirror, mirror,on the wall, who's the cleverest fruit of all?
You,my apple!

A group of students from Carl Sandburg School in New York, the US,are doing their part to help animals.
They raise money and learn about things such as animal care and safety.
"I joined the group last year because I wanted to help animals and learn how animals help people," the
eighth-grader Katie Piltz said.“We did a lot of things for the animal shelters(收容所).We learnt a lot too.I
learnt that service dogs help people with disabilities.”
Piltz is a member of an after-school club called Cougars(美洲狮)Helping Animals. The club has about 40
student members.
Teacher Iaurie Shelley organised it last year.“We have so many students who love animals and want to help,”
Shelley said. "I love animals too,so when people suggested starting the club, I thought it was a great idea."
The club is collecting supplies, including cat and dog food. The club also made cards and sold them to
students last year. And they donated(捐赠)the money to the Animal Rescue Force.
Nicholas Caroll, a member of the club, said he learnt how important service dogs are to people. “They
make the lives of people easier," the sixth-grader said.“They open doors and pick up keys. I didn't know they
were so great until taking part in the club.”

Dolphins are clever. 17._____Studies show that dolphins and humans have something in common. Let's
have a look.
Like humans, every dolphin has its “name”. The name is a special whistle(口哨).Each dolphin chooses a
different whistle for itself, usually by its first birthday. Dolphins are like humans in other ways too. 18.____
And they “talk”with each other about a lot of things—such as their ages, their feelings and finding food.
19.______And they often join others from different groups to play games and have fun, just like humans.
Playing together is something only clever animals can do.
Dolphins and humans are similar in another way. Both of them make plans to get things they want. In the
water of southern Brazil, for example, dolphins use a smart way to get food. When there are fish near a boat,
dolphins signal(发信号)to the fishermen to put their nets in the water. In this way,the fishermen can get a lot of
fish. 20._____That's because they can eat some of the fish that run away from the net.
二、完形填空(共10小题,每小题1分;满分10分)
A.Dolphins live in groups.
B. Why do dolphins help the fishermen?
C. It seems that they can think and learn things quickly.

E. They use sound and body language to “talk”with each other.

When we are talking about animals in China, the most precious kind of animal we would think of is
probably the panda. In fact,a kind of bird is as precious as the panda,21 many people don't know much
about it. The bird is the crested ibis(朱鹮). It is as 22 as snow with a red face and 23 very beautiful.
Crested ibises live in tall trees by small rivers or rice fields. They 24 small fish and some other small
animals for food. About one hundred years ago,a lot of crested ibises lived 25 China, Russia and Japan.
Later,as they lost their home, the 26 of them was getting smaller and smaller. Between 1965 and 1980,
people didn’t see any of them living in the wild. Luckily,on 23rd May 1981,scientists 27 seven of them in
the south of Shaanxi Province. In order to_28 crested ibises in the wild, the Chinese govemment is setting up
nature parks and developing other plans. Now scientists are doing a lot of research to help them to 29 more
babies. Today there are about 1,500 crested ibises living in the wild and there are about 500 crested ibises at the
30 and research centres. Scientists believe that there'll be more and more crested ibises.
