When I was about 10 years old, I started learning cooking by making dough (面团). In my hometown, Ningxia, people often make noodles in the evening. My parents came home late, so if I made the dough early, we could have dinner sooner.
At first, I thought it was easy. I saw my mom do it many times. Just mix water and flour (面粉), right? But it was harder than I thought. Sometimes the dough way too soft. Sometimes It was too hard. I kept trying and slowly learned how to do it well.
Later, I learned to make jiaozi, pancakes and even pizza. I really enjoy cooking. It helps relax. Besides, I live a better life when I need to work away from my home. Every time I cook, the taste and smell bring back the warm memories of my hometown.

My home is in Lhasa. My dad works far away from home. He has been a policeman at a train station along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway(青藏铁路) for 13 years. My dad is busy, but whenever(无论何时) he has time, he takes the time back to see my mom, my little brother, and me. Sometimes, the train also takes us to see dad. The railway brings us together.
—Yongqing Zerencuomu, 8. Lhasa
The Qinghai-Tibet Railway is the first railway in Tibet. Before then, people could almost not get in and out of Tibet. Traveling inside Tibet was difficult, too. People like the father of Yongqing Zerenouomu often got from one town to another by bus. It took a long time. In 1958 China began to build the railway. It starts in Qinghai’s Xining and ends in Lhasa.
“It is a miracle(奇迹) to build a railway above the clouds,” a French newspaper once wrote about the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. The railway runs across no-man’s land and climbs up snowy mountains. From Qinghai’s Golmud(格尔木) to Lhasa, about 550 km of the railway runs on frozen earth(冻土). It took over 100,000 workers five years to build it. In 2006, the railway was ready.
Now, more people visit Tibet. People living there get more opportunities to travel, too. The train also takes things from Tibet to the outside world, such as yak meat(牦牛肉) and butter tea(酥油茶). The railway brings people in Tibet a happier and richer life.
