But the traditional Chinese fan is not just a tool for cooling down. It’s an important part of Chinese culture. The history of the Chinese fan dates back to over 3,000 years ago, around the time of the Shang Dynasty. One of the earliest known “fans” were named shanhan. They weren’t like the fans we see today. These were tied to a horse-drawn carriage (马车) to prevent the heat (热) of the sun and shelter passengers from the rain. The shanhan then developed into a long-handled fan called zhangshan. This type of fan was made of silk or bird feathers and was mainly used by the emperor’s honor guard (仪仗队) for decoration. It wasn’t until the Zhou Dynasty that people started using folding fans (折叠扇) to cool down. During the Han Dynasty, the fan became popular among common people. This was because more affordable bamboo fans had been invented. The popularity of these fans continued until the Tang and Song Dynasties. Around the same time, a new type of silk fan was also introduced. Loved by young women, the silk fans were round to resemble the moon. They were also called “round fans,” or tuanshan. Later, this moon-shaped fan took on many other shapes. The ribs (扇骨) of these silk round fans were traditionally made from bamboo or animal bones. The handles were usually decorated with different designs. The main “face” of the fan was often hand-painted with calligraphy and scenes such as mountains or flowers. Folding fans were mainly made up of panels and ribs. For the ribs, people used different kinds of materials, including wood, bones and bamboo. The panels of the folding fan were usually made of paper, silk or other materials. They formed an empty space for artists to use as a canvas. Their calligraphy work and painted scenes added color to the fans. From the Song Dynasty on, fan painting became an art form of its own. Works of art featuring birds and flowers were popular among young women. Men, however, preferred fans decorated with calligraphy. Mythical creatures were also popular choices. Dragons were often painted onto men’s fans while ladies usually preferred phoenixes. 28. When were fans used to beat the heat? A. In the Tang Dynasty. B. In the Han Dynasty. C. In the Zhou Dynasty. D. In the Song Dynasty. 29. Why did fans become popular among common people? A. Cheaper bamboo fans were invented. B. People want to cool down in summer. C. More people learned to make fans. D. A new type of silk fan was invented. 30. What is the underlined word “resemble” in the third paragraph similar to? A. cut out B. look like C. turn into D. depend on 31. Did you know some papers are more “dangerous” than others? Three scientists from Denmark found that 65-micrometer-thick paper is most likely to cut our skin (皮肤). They won the Physics Prize for this at the 2024 Pineapple Science Award in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, on Nov 23. The scientists got papers with different thicknesses from 30 to 220 micrometers. To test them safely, they used special man-made fingers made from ballistic gel. This gel is just as tough as our skin, helping the scientists get accurate results about which paper cuts easily. For thin paper, the scientists found it couldn't cut the “fingers”— it just bent(弯曲). And for thicker paper, it left a mark on the fingers but couldn't break the “skin” because it wasn't sharp enough. When they tried the 65-micrometer-thick paper, the scientists found it cut the fingers the most, about once every five tries. This is close to the thickness of a journal (期刊) paper, like Nature and Science. The A4 printer paper we often use is about 100 micrometers thick and is much safer. The cutting angle(角度) is also important. Pushing the paper straight down onto the fingers didn't often make a cut. Pushing it at a slanted (倾斜的) angle made more cuts. The study helps us understand everyday dangers. To avoid paper cuts, choose thicker paper (over 100 micrometers)and handle pages gently, especially at angles. The scientists hope their findings can help make safer things out of paper. They also made a cheap paper knife called the Papermachete that can cut through apples and chicken. 32. Where did the scientists do their tests? A. On human fingers. B. On animal skin. C. On man-made fingers. D. On plastic skin. 33. What did the thin paper do in the tests? A. It cut the fingers easily. B. It left marks on the fingers. C. It bent without cutting. D. It broke the skin. 34 Why is paper from Nature magazine more likely to cause paper cuts than A4 paper? A. People usually turn its pages faster. B. People push it at a slanted angle. C. Its paper is about 65 micrometers thick. D. Its paper is similar to human skin. 35. What can the findings help us to do? A. To make better use of paper. B. To produce paper faster than before. C. To reduce the cost of making paper. D. To make safer knives for cutting paper. 【答案】32. C 33. C 34. C 35. 根据“To test them safely, they used special man-made fingers made from ballistic gel”可知,科学家使用弹道凝胶(ballistic gel)制作的“人造手指”进行测试。故选C。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。根据“For thin paper, the scientists found it couldn’t cut the ‘fingers’— it just bent.”可知,薄纸无法割伤手指,仅弯曲。故选C。 【34题详解】 细节理解题。根据“65-micrometer-thick paper cut the fingers the most”可知,65毫米厚度的纸更容易割伤手;且“Nature and Science”期刊厚度接近65微米,而根据“A4 printer paper is about 100 micrometers… much safer”可知,A4纸的厚度大约100毫米。故选C。 【35题详解】 细节理解题。根据“The scientists hope their findings can help make safer things out of paper.”可知,研究帮助优化纸张安全应用。故选A。 第二节 (本题共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分) 请认真阅读下面短文,从短文后所给的六个选项中选出五个可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 Earth Day, which falls on April 22, is a day to call on more people to protect the natural world. The first time we stayed there, our neighbour Mary came and brought us gifts—a box with some tomatoes and a bottle of wine (葡萄酒) in it. It was nice of her to do it. But when we looked at the tomatoes, we were worried because they looked terrible: not at all like the nice, round, shiny things you get in a supermarket. And the wine was cloudy, in a funny old bottle with no label (标签) on it. These couldn’t be any good, we thought. But we were thankful for her kindness, so we tried them. What a wonderful taste! Those tomatoes made me think of the ones my uncle grew when I was a child. Nowadays supermarket tomatoes look perfect but they have a taste of water. Nobody’s going to have a happy memory of those. In the background, a rising red sun shows Xu’s strong belief in winning the World Anti-Fascist War. Besides being a painter, Xu was also an art educator. He wanted his students to be creative (有创造力的) and love beauty. History and Culture of Chinese Fans D Sometimes, we get a paper cut when turning the pages of our textbooks. 34. Why is paper from Nature magazine more likely to cause paper cuts than A4 paper? 第二节 (本题共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分) 请认真阅读下面短文,从短文后所给的六个选项中选出五个可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 Earth Day, which falls on April 22, is a day to call on more people to protect the natural world. Mary’s wine may be cloudy and come out of an old bottle, but it was perfect. It’s good to eat things at the correct time, when they’re in season, and as close as possible to where they were grown. What Mary gives us is the taste of Sunshine Town. 请将答案写在答题卡上。 66. When do we usually go to Sunshine Town? ___________________________________________________ 67.
