When many architects (建筑师) wanted to work in other countries, Liu Jiakun chose to stay in China and help build cities here. Liu is now the second Chinese to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the top award in architecture. What makes him special is his love for local life.
Liu’s most famous project is the “West Village” in Chengdu. It has many different buildings for shops, sports and other activities—but no homes. The buildings form a circle, and inside the circle is a large space with three football fields.
Where did this idea come from? From hot pot! Liu grew up in Chengdu, where people love eating hot pot. He says his “West Village” is like a large hot pot, which can hold anything. At first, Liu didn’t say the purpose of each space. He just made spaces of different sizes for people to gather. People could decide how to use them. The block has become a popular public space for people to spend free time.
The Suzhou Museum of Imperial Kiln Brick is another of Liu’s projects. When designing it, Liu mostly kept the old buildings as they were. The museum looks rather modest (朴实无华的) when you first see it. However, when you take a close look at it, you will see how cool it is.
Architect Yang Nan says Liu’s works are great examples of problem solving in architecture. Liu respects (尊重) the environment and people who live in it.

A. It has shops and homes for people. B. It has some buildings in the middle.
C. It is designed to look like a football field. D. It provides spaces for different activities.

In Paralympic Sports (残奥会), many blind or nearly blind athletes race (比赛) with the help of a guide. These pairs work very closely together.
Jerusa Geber is a runner who lost her sight as a teenager. When she races with her guide Garcia, he runs to her left. They each hold one end of a short rope. If they’ve started well, he matches her speed bit by bit, but with the opposite foot. They work so well together that Jerusa now holds the women’s world record in the 100-meter race for blind or nearly blind athletes.
Since 2012, guides in the Paralympics can win medals too. But the teamwork is about more than just winning. Garcia is a runner himself. “I like being a guide.” he said. “I feel more pressure (压力) at the Paralympics. I have to give 200% of myself to avoid mistakes and help my teammate do her best.”
In cycling, Hannah Chadwick and her guide, Skyler Espinoza, also work closely. When they ride together, Espinoza always holds Chadwick’s hand before starting. “It’s a reminder (提示) that we’re in this together.” Espinoza said.
Chadwick and Espinoza follow the same training plan. Sometimes, when the training gets hard, Chadwick thinks of her teammate. “I’m not training just for myself.” she said. “I’m training for both of us!”
People sometimes say Espinoza is making a sacrifice (牺牲) for a disabled athlete. But she doesn’t see it that way. Espinoza believes that if she hadn’t been a Paralympic guide, she would never have shone so much in sports. “I’m lucky that Hannah chose me to do this, just as I chose to do it with her.” she said.
27. How does Garcia help the blind athlete Jerusa Geber?
A. He walks in front of her to show the path.
B. He runs behind her and shouts directions.
C. He rides a bicycle next to her to guide the way.
D. He holds a rope, running beside her with the opposite foot.
28. Which of the following words best describes the guides in the Paralympics?
A. Crazy. B. Generous. C. Brave. D. Humorous.
29. What’s the best title for the text?

One rainy afternoon, Susan, Lucy and Edmund decided to play hide-and-seek (捉迷藏). Lucy hid into the room with the old wardrobe (衣橱). She didn’t plan to hide in it—last time she said there was a magic world called Narnia (纳尼亚), everyone laughed at her. But she couldn’t help wondering: Was Narnia just a dream?
Just as she reached the wardrobe, she heard footsteps in the hall. She quickly jumped inside and closed the door. It was Edmund. He saw Lucy go into the wardrobe. He opened the door, walked in, and closed it behind him. Inside were coats, darkness, and... no Lucy.
Edmund tried to open the door, but his hands felt only coats. “This isn’t funny,” he said, his voice sounding strange, like outdoors. And why was it so cold? Then he saw a weak light.
“Finally!” he thought the door had opened. But instead of the floor, he walked onto the crunchy (嘎吱作响的) snow. The ground was frozen, and the sky was pale blue. Edmund shook with cold.
“Lucy! I’m sorry I didn’t believe you. Narnia is real!” No answer. Just as he decided to go back, a sledge (雪橇) showed up and stopped in front of him. On the sledge sat a tall lady in white fur, with a golden crown and a long golden stick. Her face was white—not only pale, but white like snow or paper, except for her very red mouth. It was a beautiful face, but proud and stern (严厉的).
“And what, may I ask, are you?” said the Lady, looking hard at Edmund.
“I’m-I’m-my name’s Edmund,” said Edmund very nervously. He did not like the way she looked at him.
The lady frowned (皱眉), “Is that how you speak to a Queen?” she asked, looking sterner than ever.
“I’m sorry, your Majesty. I didn’t know,” said Edmund.
“Not know the Queen of Narnia?” cried she. “Ha! You shall know us better from this time. But I repeat—what are you?”
“Please, your Majesty,” said Edmund, “I don’t know what you mean. I’m at school—at least I was. It’s the holidays now.”

七、阅读表达(共3小题;63小题1分、64小题2分、64小题3分,满分6分)
阅读下面的短文,用英语回答问题,并将答案写在答题卡标有题号的横线上。
When I was in college, I took English literature (文学) classes. Every month, we read and discussed a classic novel. The books had different themes, but we always asked the same question: What did the writer want people to get from the story?
For the first few months, I kept wondering: If a writer wants to express a message, why not do it directly? Why did Ernest Hemingway, for example, write about an old man fighting a big fish? Didn’t he just want to tell people to keep going when things get hard?
The more I read, the more I understood why. Great writers don’t tell; they show. Nobody likes a lecture (讲座). Just think about how you feel when your parents tell you not to waste money on blind boxes. But everybody enjoys a good story. While discussing a story, we uncover its deeper meanings. A good story makes a book a classic.
After all these years of editing (编辑) work, I’ve become a better writer. In many of my articles, I chose to “show” rather than “tell.” For example, I didn’t directly tell you to exercise more. Instead, I shared an experience that pushed me to change some habits.
Classic novels have taught me many other lessons. I’ve picked up lots of useful words. I’ve also learned to write with my readers in mind. You can also read to write better. Walk into a great “castle” (城堡) and find out what makes it great. Over time, you’ll be ready to build a great “castle” of your own.
48. What question did the writer ask after finishing every classic novel?
_______________________________________________
49. What has the writer learned by reading classic novels? (Give at least 2 points.)
_______________________________________________
50. If you are in a book “castle”, which book will you choose? Give the name of the book and explain your reason.

49. The writer has learned to pick up lots of useful words and to write with readers in mind.
50. 开放性试题,答案合理即可。If I am in a book “castle,” I will choose Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen because its witty dialogue and deep exploration of human relationships inspire me to write with more nuance.

根据“Classic novels have taught me many other lessons. I’ve picked up lots of useful words. I’ve also learned to write with my readers in mind.”可知,作者通过阅读经典小说学到了两点:积累了许多有用的词汇,并学会了站在读者的角度写作。故填The writer has learned to pick up lots of useful words and to write with readers in mind.

A. Crazy. B. Generous. C. Brave. D. Humorous.

But instead of the floor, he walked onto the crunchy (嘎吱作响) snow.
30. What were the three children doing in the beginning?
A. They were playing with snow. B. They were playing a game.

The more I read the more I understood why.
