Major Sports Leagues in the US
NFL
Formed in 1920, the National Football League has a religious following in the US and around the world. It’s one of the most profitable leagues in the whole world. The NFL consists of 32 teams, which are sub-divided into NFC and AFC, which compete against each other every year to win the Super Bowl, the halftime show of which features major hit musicians.
NBA
Initially formed in 1946 as the BAA (Basketball Association of America), it merged (合并) with National Basketball League in 1949 and changed its name to NBA. The National Basketball Association might not be the biggest sports league financially, but it has a larger international following than other leagues. The keyword “NBA” was among the most googled keywords in 2021, which indicates how popular it is in the world.
MLB
Baseball is considered to be the national pastime activity of the US and the Major League Baseball is its highest level in the country. The MLB might not be popular as NFL in other parts of the world, but international supporters still make a large portion of the total fanbase. Formed in 1903, the MLB is the oldest US sports league and now has 30 teams, which was a merger between the National League and the American League.
NHL
Founded in 1917, the National Hockey League is the second-oldest sports league in the US and Canada and consists of a total of 32 teams. Three of the best performing teams from each division make it to the playoffs plus two wild card teams. All teams compete to win the prestigious Stanley Cup. Most of NHL’s revenue comes from TV and gate receipts with hockey-crazed Canadians being the primary market.
1. Which American sports league enjoys highest popularity globally?
A. NFL. B. NBA. C. MLB. D. NHL.
2. What can a football fan enjoy when watching NFL?
A. Religious celebrations. B. Interactive games.
C. International competition. D. Musical performances.
3. What sets NHL apart from other American sports leagues?

Like many constructions, it started small. But now thousands of children with autism (自闭症) are making friends and learning social skills by playing a special version of online building game Minecraft.
Stuart Duncan got the idea through a popular blog he ran about his own experiences with autism as well as bringing up a son with autism. Other parents with autistic children started telling him that their kids were crazy about a game that let them explore a randomly generated wilderness. However, despite loving the game, many of the children were being bullied (霸凌) by other players.
So, in 2013, Duncan, a web developer in Canada, set up a server to run a version of Minecraft only for children with autism and their families. He thought the invite-only server would attract 10 or 20 people, but hundreds requested to join in the first few days. Now, almost three years later, running the special version, Autcraft, is his full-time job. The community has nearly 7000 members, along with a team of engineers to help manage its many activities. “Parents see such a benefit for themselves and their children,” says Duncan.
In Minecraft, you use blocks of materials like wood and stone to build whatever you like. “This is a great way for them to play a game they love, but also have a social experience,” says Kate Ringland from the University of California, who has spent 60 hours inside this virtual world, watching how the kids play and chat to one another. “It’s giving an alternative way for these kids to express themselves and communicate without the stresses of the physical life stuff.”
Everyday social situations can be challenging for autistic children, who may struggle to pick up on social signals or understand another person’s viewpoint. Duncan thinks Minecraft removes the pressures typical of the real world. There is no noisy or unfamiliar environment to distract (使分心) you, no pressure to track the other person’s facial expressions or worry about eye contact. Joining a community like Autcraft could be a good first step to feeling less socially anxious and more engaged.
4. What inspired Duncan to run Autcraft?
A. Online Bullying.
B. His son’s request.
C. Some parents’ advice.
D. His blog about autism.
5. What can we learn about Autcraft from Paragraph 3?
A. It has about 7,000 engineers.
B. It was an unexpected success.
C. It helped parents play with their kids.
D. It remains accessible to all the people.
6. How does Minecraft help children according to Duncan?
A. By teaching communication skills.
B. By solving their real world problems.
C. By explaining other people’s viewpoints.
D. By offering stress-free social experiences.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. How Can We Deal With Autism?
B. What Makes Minecraft So Famous?
C. Why Do Online Games Benefit Children?
D. How Does Autcraft Help Autistic Children?
C
Time and time again I hear someone ask why anyone would want to keep an “ugly” building or a building that is dirty and clearly in need of work. I think you could say we preservationists (文物保护者) look at buildings through a different angle — an angle that can see the swan in the ugly duck, the story in the simple lines, the book behind the cover.
Take the Queen Emma Building for example. While people may remember that building being named as one of the ugliest buildings in town, the angle from which a preservationist will view the building is that it is uniquely constructed with an artistical brise-soleil (遮阳板) to block the sun. The designer used standard concrete bricks to form a decorative wall. Unfortunately, the brise-soleil was removed in 2011, making the building look like many of the contemporary buildings in town.
Sometimes people remember a beautiful site that was replaced by a “very unpleasant” piece of architecture and can’t get over their anger, even when that building becomes an important part of our story. This is particularly true in San Francisco where many preservationists themselves dislike anything newer, than the Victorian era. Yes, it was a tragedy that many failed to appreciate the Victorian buildings and let many get torn down several decades ago, but those losses also tell another important story. It tells the story of the 1950s and 1960s when there was hope for a more equal society with inexpensive housing for the working class. Should that history be wiped from our memories?
Preservation is not just about keeping pretty, well-kept buildings, but about conveying pars of our history — not just the history of huge events, but the story of how everyone used to go to a certain corner market. Our history cannot be told only in buildings that meet someone’s criteria of beauty; sometimes our history is painful, but no less important.
8. How do preservationists see buildings?
A. They focus on their value rather than appearance.
B. They pay great attention to ancient buildings.
C. They are devoted to repairing famous buildings.
D. They prefer ugly buildings to beautiful ones.
9. What does the author think of removing the brise-soleil of the Queen Emma Building?
A. It’s confusing. B. It’s pleasing.
C. It’s regrettable. D. It’s unbelievable.
10. Why were many Victorian buildings in San Francisco torn down?
A. To wipe the history of the Victorian era.
B. To make land available for cheap housing.
C. To work off the deep anger of the working class.
D. To restore the architecture before the Victorian era.
11. What is the author’s intention of writing this passage?
A. To introduce some buildings with historical value.
B. To explain the reason why architects make ugly buildings.
C. To praise the work of preservationists.
D. To stress the importance of preserving ugly buildings.
D
If someone created a flying machine capable of tracking you down by listening for your voice, you might be terrified. But what if you were trapped in ruins after a natural disaster and first responders couldn’t locate you? Maybe then a human-seeking drone(无人机) wouldn’t be such a terrible idea. That concept is the focus for engineers at Germany’s Fraunhofer FKIE Institute, who’ve built a drone to find people by detecting(探测) human screams.
“The human-seeking drone would be ideal for post-disaster situations, such as earthquakes, hurricanes and wildfires,” said Macarena Varela, one of the lead engineers. “They could hover over an area that rescue crews have difficulty getting to and locate exactly where people may be trapped.”
Locating people by sound presents its share of challenges. An auditory(听觉的) system would need to distinguish human cries from sounds that often happen in nature, such as animal calls and wind. It might also need to recognize patterns associated with kicking, clapping or other ways people try to get the attention of rescue teams.
Engineers took those situations into account when building out their concept drone. They recorded themselves screaming, tapping and creating other noises that might be a sign of people in trouble. Then, they analyzed each sound frequency to find common signatures and used those to train artificial intelligence software. They also worked to remove the noise created by the drone and other environmental sounds.
Once the software part was complete, the team placed tiny digital microphones under the drone and used signal processing techniques that enabled them to track where human noises are coming from. The microphones also enhanced the volume and clarity of the speech. So far, they have conducted successful open field experiments, finding that the drone can estimate a victim’s location within a few seconds of picking up sound.
Next, they would like to add a higher frequency microphone to a drone to acquire more audio sound signals. The idea is to pick up noises from hundreds of meters away, Varela said. In the real world, victim’s location data might one day be sent wirelessly to emergency crews carrying a tablet.
12. What is the advantage of the human-seeking drone?
A. Its high speed of flying. B. Its long working hours.
C. Its quick response to screams. D. Its easy access to disaster scene.
13. What can the auditory system do?
A. Recognize human cries.
B. Pick up sounds from far away.
C. Send victim’s location data to a tablet.
D. Improve the quality of human screams.
14. What does the underlined word “signatures” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Effects. B. Features. C. Symbols. D. Situations.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. AI Enables Drones to Give Better Performance.
B. Human-seeking Drones Replace Rescue Crews.
C. Rescuers Use Drones to Locate Disaster Survivors.
D. Engineers Teach Drones to Hunt Human Screams.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I didn’t like Del so much. He always called me the nickname “Germy”, which meant “dirty”, instead of my real name “Jamie”. Besides, he was known as a trouble-maker in school. So when the head teacher Mr. Smith asked Del to come to his office, I naturally thought that Del had done something mean to someone. Through the window, I caught sight of a smaller boy crying. Del seemed unhappy, too.
He did not return to class that day. All of us were discussing what had happened to him. What else could such an annoying boy do? “He must have hit the boy and was sent home,” I whispered to my friends. Their eyes widened. It felt good to see them so interested in what I said.
The next morning, the whole school was talking about Del being expelled(开除) for beating up a kid. I was surprised that my assumptions were passed on so quickly. So when Del walked into the classroom, all the kids were shocked. The kids next to him shift ed their desks away. “What’s your problem?” Del asked. “I don’t want you to attack me,” one kid said. Some laughed. “Yeah, I might,” said Del. I could tell he was joking, but many kids thought he admitted he did beat up someone.
During recess(课间休息), Del tried to join the kickball game. “Neither team wants you,” one of the players said. “Why?” Del asked, looking confused. “I always play with you guys.” They ignored him and went on playing. Del sat by himself while the rest of the school enjoyed their recess away from him. Del looked lonely and sad, much different from before. I started to feel sorry for him.
Later that day, I learned what really happened. The kid was Del’s little brother and he was crying because their mother fell ill and was sent to hospital. I felt even sorrier for what I said before. I started a rumor(谣言).
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At recess the next day, I saw Del sitting alone watching the kickball game.

【答案】Dear David,
I’m glad to hear from you. Now I recommend that you and your family travel to Xi’an in the winter holiday.
The reasons are as follows. Xi’an is famous for its Terracotta Warriors, which have become an international symbol of China’s history. Being near the central part of China, Xi’an is a crossroads for many of the amazing Chinese cuisines. Restaurants in Xi’an range from Cantonese to Sichuan styles. Xi’an is also known for its ancient and well preserved city walls. Many tourists enjoy walking on sections of the walls, but another option is to bike on the city wall.
Hope you will have a breathtaking holiday in China!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】At recess the next day, I saw Del sitting alone watching the kickball game. Not wanting him to feel left out, I walked over and sat down beside him. “Hey Germy,” he said. “My name is Jamie.” I replied. I wanted to apologize for starting that rumor about him, but I was too ashamed to say it out loudly. “Del, do you want to play kickball with us?” I asked instead. He looked surprised but happy at the same time. After a moment of silence, he nodded his head.
Now that Del had forgiven me, I decided to do more before the recess was over. I stood up and shouted to the other kids, “Guys, come here! Let’s play kickball together! ” Some of them hesitated, but they eventually joined us. Del was smiling again and so were we. As we played, I realized that Del wasn’t as bad as I thought he was.
