“I’m doing Tech-Free Sundays now!” I told my sister, on the Saturday night before my no-tech journey starts. “Oh,” she said. “So are you giving up, like, the wheel?” I defined (定义) the technology in “Tech-Free”. No: computer, phone, iPad. No: email, Twitter. Yes: wheels, modern medicine.
And then I woke up in the morning and failed. The problem was work: I need to finish my work. “I’ll just use the computer for work, but I won’t check Twitter, Facebook or anything.” And I didn’t, for many hours. And then I did. And though I checked it for a few seconds, just in case anyone died or was mad at me, the spell (咒语) was broken. Every minute I spent on my computer-but-only-for-necessary-reasons was a test of willpower (意志力). It was really painful.
But the beautiful thing about Sundays was that there was always another one. The next week, I adjusted my method: no technology at all. This time, I was prepared. On Saturday, I made a list of everything I wanted to finish over the weekend, and worked my way through all the parts that required technology. And then I put my phone down, and when I woke up on Tech-Free Sunday, I did not pick it up again.
Instead, I finished a book — one with paper! Do you know how pleasurable it is to read a book by touching it? It is a delight, like petting a very literary cat. However, the trouble came when I went to meet a friend. I was running late, but had no way to tell her because my phone was at home.
Was I relaxed on such a Sunday? It was an unfamiliar feeling, but I was. I felt a sense of control over my life. But because life is nothing if not a learning process, the next weekend, I told everyone who might need to get in touch with me that I would not be reachable on Sunday.
4. What can we infer from Paragraph 1?
A. The author’s sister also wanted to join her.
B. The author was unfamiliar with technology.
C. The author wouldn’t refuse all modern technology.
D. The author wouldn’t drive on “Tech-Free Sunday”.
5. What made the author painful?
A. She was under a bad spell. B. Someone was angry with her.
C. She had much work to finish. D. She couldn’t play computer.
6. What did the author do on the next Sunday?
A. She lost her phone. B. She petted her cat at home.
C. She informed her friends of her plan. D. She was late for an appointment.
7. How does the author feel about her Tech-Free decision now?
A. Satisfied. B. Bored. C. Disappointed. D. Mad.

On October 4, a wildfire tore through a large area of Rapa Nui National Park on Chile’s Easter Island, causing serious damage to several of the large, ancient stone statues that the island is famous for.
Easter Island is home to about 900 large stone statues called moai that are carved stone statues with extremely large heads. Created over 500 years ago by the people known as the Rapa Nui people, the average height of the statues is about 4meters, with the tallest standing 10 meters. Hundreds of moai are located near the Rano Raraku volcano, inside Rapa Nui National Park. The area has been named by the United Nations as an area that’s important to protect. Sadly, that’s also where the fire was most intense.
The wildfire spread quickly through the Rapa Nui National Park and park workers and firefighters worked for hours to control the fire. But the fire spread easily through the grassland around the area. It wasn’t until late the next day that the fire was brought under control. The park said it didn’t have enough volunteers to fight the fire more quickly.
The fire has burned as much as 1 square kilometer of land, mainly centered around the Rano Raraku volcano. There are 386 moai in and around Rano Raraku. It’s clear that the fire has damaged some of these moai. Ariki Tepano leads the group in charge of taking care of the park. He says, “The moai are totally blackened and you can see the effect of the fire upon them.”
Chile’s government says the stones would have expanded as they were heated by the fire, and then shrunk again as they cooled down. This process weakens the stones and can cause cracks.
The cause of the fire isn’t known yet. But Ariki Tepano believes the fire was not started naturally. He says the island needs more government support to be able to deal with situations like this one.
8. What is the purpose of Paragraph 2?
A To introduce the value of moai. B. To explain the cause of the fire.
C. To stress the efforts to protect the moai. D. To add some background information.
9. What can we learn about the fire?
A. It was not put out in time. B. It was caused by the volcano.
C. Somebody set the fire on purpose. D. No volunteers helped control the fire.
10. What does the underlined word “shrunk” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean?
A. Become hot. B. Got small. C. Grown big. D. Turned black.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Firefighters worked hard to control the fire
B. Fire damages famous statues on Easter Island
C. Stone statues were totally destroyed in the fire
D. A wildfire tore through Rapa Nui National Park

Scientists began experimenting with the concept of television more than a century ago. But decades would pass before the Radio Corporation of America brought it to the public at the 1939 World’s Fair. More time passed before TV sets were in stores — and even then, it took a while until most people had one. In 1950, fewer than 10% of Americans owned a television. By 1959, that number had grown to 85%.
During the 1950s, TVs were expensive, screens were not big enough and the picture wasn’t always clear. Moreover, early TV programs were in black and white; color wasn’t in wide use until the mid-1960s. Viewers didn’t have a lot of choices, either. Instead of hundreds of channels to choose from, most cities offered only three or four. And DVR didn’t exist. Programs appeared on a specific day at a particular time, and if you missed it — you missed it.
Early TVs worked with the use of “analog (模拟的) signals” — essentially radio waves containing both the picture and sound of a television program. Here’s how it worked: Using a transmission tower, the local television station repeatedly sent those radio waves through the air during the broadcast day. Antennas (天线) on the roofs of buildings and homes in the community received those waves and, through a cable, transported the signal to the television sets inside.
Modern digital TV uses different information streams. For example, one stream is for the picture; another stream is for the sound. Pictures are created by basic units called pixels (像素). Your screen has tens of thousands of pixels. Basically, three colors — red, blue and green — form other colors in various combinations, and the picture is created from all the pixels together. Groups of bits are formed into larger units called bytes (字节), which are the link between the content you’re watching and your TV. Your digital smart TV has an interface that allows you to control all the functions.
In the future, there will be more functions equipped in your cellphone and TV, which offers you more choices. Whether the TV will be a screen for your cellphone is up to you, a person watching TV.
12. What might be a new feature of household TVs in 1965?
A. Big screens. B. Clear pictures.
C. Many channels. D. Colored images.
13. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 4?
A. The development of TVs. B. The working process of modern TVs.
C. The problems viewers meet. D. The advantages of modern TVs.
14. What do we know about modern digital TVs?
A. They are always used as computers by viewers.
B Their pictures are more colorful with higher pixels.
C. Users can control most of the functions on their TVs.
D. Bytes are in charge of linking the program to the TVs.
15. In which section of a website can you find the text?
A. Entertainment. B. Technology. C. Lifestyle. D. News.

Ahmad was all skin and bones. Added to his problems was the fact that he stuttered (结巴) when he was shy or nervous. It was no surprise that he was not a hit with the students in the class.
There was one advantage Ahmad had, however. He had a beautiful voice. It was clear and high. However, none of his friends or teachers knew about it as he practiced singing only in the bathroom. Once, he was caught singing by his classmates but he didn’t admit the beautiful song they had heard was sung by him. They believed when his voice went to a characteristic stutter. “I... I... real-lly did-didn’t s-sing...”
One day, the class of Secondary 4B, which Ahmad was in, heard about a singing competition that was to be held in the nearby community center. Every year, many students as well as their teachers would go. A prize would be awarded to the best student singer. It was a well-known yearly competition and many students supported Ali, their classmate. He had a nice voice and good showmanship. So it was really a surprise for the students to see Ahmad’s name beside Ali’s on the notice board, which announced the auditions (试演) on 15 May.
“You can sing, Ahmad? Get real! Don’t make me laugh!” His classmates laughed at Ahmad when they saw Ahmad. Ahmad felt awkward and sad. It was enough that they did not support him but laughing at and being so unkind to him was too much.
When the results were announced, class 4B could not believe their ears. Ali of course qualified but so did Ahmad for the finals. “How on earth did the stutterer do it?” they wondered.
A few of Ali’s friends met Ahmad in the toilet. They forced him to sing a favorite song. Of course, under such disbelieving eyes from his classmates, poor Ahmad could not sing. He could only stutter! But Ahmad was determined to prove them wrong. He was fortunate to have the services of a former singing instructor Mr. Chan who polished up his delivery and improved his showmanship.
注意:
1.续写词数应150左右;
The finals of the singing competition finally arrived.

A Satisfied. B. Bored. C. Disappointed. D. Mad.
C 5. D 6. D 7. A
根据第一段中的“I defined (定义) the technology in “Tech-Free”. No: computer, phone, iPad. No: email, Twitter. Yes: wheels, modern medicine. (我定义了“无科技”里所指的技术范畴。不包含:电脑、手机、iPad。不包含:电子邮件、推特(Twitter)。包含:轮子、现代医学。)”可知,作者自己定义科技术语,也就是她说的“无科技”不包括汽车和现代医学,因此判断她不会拒绝使用所有的现代科技。故选C。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“And though I checked it for a few seconds, just in case anyone died or was mad at me, the spell (咒语) was broken. Every minute I spent on my computer-but-only-for-necessary-reasons was a test of willpower (意志力). It was really painful. (虽然我只是看了一眼,以防有人去世或者生我的气,但这一眼就打破了“戒律”。我每在电脑上花一分钟——哪怕声称是为了必要的理由——都是对意志力的考验。这真的太难熬了。)”可知,使用电脑的每一分钟都是对作者的意志力的考验,因此她感觉很痛苦。故选D。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“However, the trouble came when I went to meet a friend. I was running late, but had no way to tell her because my phone was at home. (然而,麻烦出现在我去见朋友的时候。我迟到了,却没办法通知她,因为手机落在家里了。)”可知,作者和朋友的约会迟到了。故选D。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章末段“Was I relaxed on such a Sunday? It was an unfamiliar feeling, but I was. I felt a sense of control over my life. But because life is nothing if not a learning process, the next weekend, I told everyone who might need to get in touch with me that I would not be reachable on Sunday. (在这样一个周日,我放松了吗?这是一种陌生的感觉,但我确实放松了。我感觉自己掌控了生活。不过,生活本就是一个不断学习的过程,所以下一个周末,我告诉所有可能需要联系我的人,周日我无法接听任何来电。)”可知,作者在“无科技周日”感觉很放松而且不断地学习改进自己的做法,由此推断她对自己做出的这个决定是满意的。故选A。

A. To introduce the value of moai.
D 9. A 10. B 11. B

根据第二段中“Easter Island is home to about 900 large stone statues called moai that are carved stone statues with extremely large heads.
根据第三段中“The wildfire spread quickly through the Rapa Nui National Park and park workers and firefighters worked for hours to control the fire. But the fire spread easily through the grassland around the area. It wasn’t until late the next day that the fire was brought under control. The park said it didn’t have enough volunteers to fight the fire more quickly. (野火在拉帕努伊国家公园迅速蔓延,公园工作人员和消防员花了数小时来控制火势。但火势在该地区周围的草原上很容易蔓延。直到第二天晚些时候火势才得到控制。公园表示没有足够的志愿者来更快地扑灭大火。)”可知,从起火到火势得到控制经历了较长时间,说明火没有及时被扑灭。故选A项。
根据第五段中“Chile’s government says the stones would have expanded as they were heated by the fire, and then shrunk again as they cooled down. This process weakens the stones and can cause cracks. (智利政府表示,这些石头在被火加热时会膨胀,然后在冷却时又会shrunk。这个过程会削弱石头并导致裂缝。)”和常识可知,石头加热时膨胀,冷却时与之对应的应该是体积变小。所以“shrunk”意思是“变小”,与“Got small”同义。故选B项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段中“On October 4, a wildfire tore through a large area of Rapa Nui National Park on Chile’s Easter Island, causing serious damage to several of the large, ancient stone statues that the island is famous for. (10月4日,一场野火席卷了智利复活节岛拉帕努伊国家公园的大片区域,对该岛著名的几座大型古老石像造成了严重破坏。)”可知,本文主要讲述了野火对复活节岛著名石像造成了破坏。故B项“Fire damages famous statues on Easter Island (野火损坏了复活节岛著名的石像)”能概括文章内容,最适合做文章标题。故选B项。

B. Their pictures are more colorful with higher pixels.
C. Users can control most of the functions on their TVs.
D. Bytes are in charge of linking the program to the TVs.
15. In which section of a website can you find the text?
A. Entertainment. B. Technology. C. Lifestyle. D. News.

故填a。
故填was admitted。

故填to know。

注意:
1.续写词数应150左右;

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
The finals of the singing competition finally arrived. Ali’s supporters were out in full force. Some teachers caused quite a stir among the students when they turned up to support the two finalists from their school. Ali sang to the crowd’s delight. It looked like he was the clear favorite. His voice, together with his good showmanship, won the audience’s thunderous applause. Ahmad was next. There was a silence before he began. The clap was few, coming from the teachers and his classmates.
But when Ahmad began to sing, everyone got shocked. “Where was the stutter?” His classmates and teachers wondered. But what amazed everyone, including the teachers most, was Ahmad’s beautiful voice, delivery and showmanship. They couldn’t believe the boy on the stage was Ahmad. And when the judge announced Ahmad as the winner, everyone cheered excitedly and rose to give him a clap. The winner had finally dared to “climb his own mountain” and in the end, tasted the sweet spoils of victory. No one would laugh at him any longer.
