A
When Lola, the pet dog that had accompanied me for 14 years, passed away, I felt a part of me had died with her. The grief (悲痛) I felt was terrible, and I was desperate for a change. So, I left my familiar life behind and signed up to study Portuguese in Brazil. But my grief followed me across the ocean.
While walking on the street one day, I saw a dog squeeze (挤) into a hole in a building. I went over and discovered that the dog had just given birth to some puppies, several already dead. I called the fire department, but no one helped. Then I called an animal protector friend. After many failed attempts, we finally got the puppies out.
I held the sweet puppies in my hands and saw the mama dog’s relieved face as I brought them to her one by one. I instantly felt an incredible bond with this family and promised to do my absolute best to find them great homes. I didn’t know it at the time, but that was the day I became an animal protector.
Since then, I’ve rescued over 15 animals, mostly dogs. I began rehoming them with “adopt me” shirts at shopping malls—and it worked! I kept close contact with adopters, including a home visit after one year. But the love I gave was nothing compared to the love I received. Each life I saved helped me put pieces of my broken heart back together.
I now have three dogs of my own, including Bambi — one of the first rescued puppies. I had told myself I could never own another dog again after Lola, but with Bambi, something clicked. I hadn’t felt that much love and connection since Lola died. Rescuing animals has helped me process my grief. I’ve found a new sense of identity and purpose beyond my life.
1. What caused the author to go to Brazil?
A. The urge to seek a new pet. B. Her will to rescue animals.
C. Her desire to learn Portuguese. D. The wish to relieve her pain.
2. What can we learn about the author’s rescue of the puppies?
A. It initiated her efforts to protect animals.
B. It involved support from local authorities.
C. It helped her bond with like-minded people.
D. It showed her the tough situation of animals.
3. What does the underlined part in paragraph 5 tell us about the author?
A. She began to forget about Lola. B. She felt a connection with Bambi.
C. She decided to adopt more dogs. D. She would continue rescuing dogs.
根据第一段中“The grief (悲痛) I felt was terrible, and I was desperate for a change. So, I left my familiar life behind and signed up to study Portuguese in Brazil.(我感到的悲伤是可怕的,我非常渴望改变。所以,我离开了我熟悉的生活,报名去巴西学习葡萄牙语)”可知,作者去巴西是希望能缓解悲伤,故选D。
【2题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“I instantly felt an incredible bond with this family and promised to do my absolute best to find them great homes. I didn’t know it at the time, but that was the day I became an animal protector.(我立刻感受到与这个家庭的不可思议的联系,并承诺尽我最大的努力为它们找到美好的家。我当时并不知道,但就在那天,我成为了一名动物保护者)”可知,作者救助小狗的行为开启了她保护动物的努力,故选A。
【3题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“I had told myself I could never own another dog again after Lola, but with Bambi, something clicked. I hadn’t felt that much love and connection since Lola died.(我曾告诉自己,在Lola之后,我再也不能养狗了,但有了Bambi,我恍然大悟。自从Lola去世后,我就没有感受到这么多的爱和联系)”可知,作者以为在Lola去世之后不会再养其他狗狗,但是有了Bambi作者又感受到了很多爱和联系,由此推知“我恍然大悟”指的是作者感受到了和Bambi之间的联系,故选B。

What if someone told you mermaids (美人鱼) were real? Forget the fish tails, we mean women capable of holding their breath for minutes as they dive under the sea many times a day.
These are the haenyeo divers of South Korea, a community of women from Jeju Island who have been free-diving to harvest seafood for centuries. Their stories are shared with the world by the US-Korean film-maker Sue Kim, in her film The Last of the Sea Women.
The film follows the women going about their grueling work during the harvest season and examines the challenges they face both in and out of the water. They head out to dive at 6 am daily. They hold their breath for a couple of minutes, come back up to the surface and go back down again-about 100 times a session.
The risks are big. There is no insurance available for the job, as it’s too dangerous. And now the ocean — and the women’s livelihood — is under threat. Global warming is resulting in less sea life, particularly in shallow water; diving deeper is more difficult without air tanks (罐).
Perhaps the bigger threat, though, is from within, with fewer younger women choosing to pursue this difficult profession. A training school was set up in the early 2000s to address the decreasing numbers, but only 5% of those attending go on to become haenyeos.
All is not lost, though. The film introduces us to two young women from another island who have gained popularity on social media and point out the flexible hours the job can offer. One of them even started learning to swim at the age of 30 to do the job.
“When I look at the haenyeos and how they work together, it just reminds me of the collective work that women are doing everywhere else,” says Sue Kim, “When a girl is watching this documentary, I want her to believe in herself and realize that she can do anything.”
4. What does the underlined word “grueling” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Dull. B. Creative. C. Rewarding. D. Demanding.
5. What is one challenge that haenyeos are facing?
A. Lack of pre-job training. B. Low willingness to take the job.
C. The high cost of air tanks. D. The decreasing demand for seafood.
6. The author mentions the two young women in paragraph 6 to show ______.
A. hope for the profession B. the role of social media
C. the influence of the film D. qualifications for the job
7. What could be the best title for the text?
A. Haenyeo: An Overlooked Profession
B. Women Power: You Can Do Anything
C. The Last Sea Women: Courage in the Deep
D. Global Warming: A Great Risk for Haenyeos
D 5. B 6. A 7. C
又根据第三段第二、三句“They head out to dive at 6 am daily. They hold their breath for a couple of minutes, come back up to the surface and go back down again-about 100 times a session. (他们每天清晨6点出发潜水。每次潜水时,她们需要屏住呼吸几分钟,浮出水面后再次下潜——每场潜水要重复这样的动作约100次。)”可知,收获季节海女们的工作极度耗费体力,这正是对前一句中grueling所描述工作的具体举例,说明这项工作耗费体力,要求严苛。故选D项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段第一句“Perhaps the bigger threat, though, is from within, with fewer younger women choosing to pursue this difficult profession. (然而,更大的威胁可能来自内部,因为选择从事这一艰难职业的年轻女性越来越少。)”可知,海女面临的核心挑战之一是年轻从业者意愿不足。故选B项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段第一句“Perhaps the bigger threat, though, is from within, with fewer younger women choosing to pursue this difficult profession. (然而,更大的威胁可能来自内部,因为选择从事这一艰难职业的年轻女性越来越少。)”可知,上一段刚讲完年轻从业者不足,第六段就介绍了两位年轻从业女性的例子,又根据最后一段““When I look at the haenyeos and how they work together, it just reminds me of the collective work that women are doing everywhere else,” says Sue Kim, “When a girl is watching this documentary, I want her to believe in herself and realize that she can do anything.” (“当我看到海女们如何协同工作时,这让我想起世界各地女性正在进行的集体劳动,”导演Sue Kim说道,“我希望每个观看这部纪录片的女孩都能相信自己,并意识到她可以成就任何事情”)。”可知,这两位女性的例子旨在展示职业的新希望和可能性。故选A项。

Columbia scientists have found specialized neurons (神经元) in the brainstem of mice that order the animals to stop eating.
“These neurons are unlike any other neuron involved in regulating appetite,” says Alexander Nectow, who led the research in the Nectow lab. “Other neurons in the brain are usually restricted to sensing food put into our mouth, or how food fills the gut (肠道). The neurons we found are special in that they seem to integrate all these different pieces of information and more.”
Previous researchers had found the decision-making cells are located in the brainstem, but the research ended there. With new single-cell techniques, Nectow’s team spotted previously unrecognized cells that had similar characteristics to other neurons involved in regulating appetite.
To study what these cells are sensing to kick them into action, the researchers measured their activity as the mice went about their day. “Essentially these neurons can smell food, see food, feel food in the mouth and in the gut, and interpret all the gut hormones (荷尔蒙) that are released in response to eating,” Nectow says. “And ultimately, they use all of this information to decide when enough is enough.”
Next, the researchers used a technique called optogenetics, which involves editing the neurons so they could be switched on and off with light. When they used light to activate them, the mice slowed down their eating.
Though the specialized neurons were found in mice, Nectow says their location in the brainstem, a part of the brain that is essentially the same in humans, suggests that it is highly likely that humans have the same neurons. “We think it’s a major new entry point to understanding what it means to be full, how that comes about, and how that is used to end a meal,” Nectow adds. “And we hope that it could be used for obesity (肥胖症) treatment down the road.”
8. What is unique about the newly discovered neurons?
A. They affect appetite. B. They sense the food.
C. They act on combined information. D. They have an impact on other neurons.
9. What is mainly discussed about the specialized neurons in paragraph 4?
A. What they sense. B. How they function.
C. Why they are studied. D. How they detect signals.
10. What does Nectow think of the new finding?
A. It offers potential solutions to obesity. B. It explains the science of appetite.
C. It maps new neurons in the human brain. D. It unlocks the mystery of brainstem.
根据第二段 “Other neurons in the brain are usually restricted to sensing food put into our mouth, or how food fills the gut. The neurons we found are special in that they seem to integrate all these different pieces of information and more.(大脑中的其他神经元通常只限于感知放入口中的食物,或者食物如何填充肠道。我们发现的这些神经元的特别之处在于,它们似乎整合了所有这些不同的信息,甚至更多)” 可知,新发现的神经元独特之处在于它们能综合各种信息并做出反应。故选C。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“To study what these cells are sensing to kick them into action, the researchers measured their activity as the mice went about their day. “Essentially these neurons can smell food, see food, feel food in the mouth and in the gut, and interpret all the gut hormones ( 荷尔蒙 ) that are released in response to eating,” Nectow says. “And ultimately, they use all of this information to decide when enough is enough.”.(为了研究这些细胞感知到什么从而促使它们发挥作用,研究人员在老鼠日常活动时测量了它们的活性。内克托说:“从根本上讲,这些神经元能够闻到食物的气味、看到食物、感知口腔和肠道内的食物,还能解读因进食而释放的所有肠道激素。最终,它们利用所有这些信息来判定什么时候就足够了。”)”可知,此段主要讲述了这些特殊神经元是如何通过感知多种信息,最终决定停止进食,即它们是如何发挥功能的。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段 “And we hope that it could be used for obesity treatment down the road.(我们希望在未来它能被用于肥胖症的治疗)” 可知,Nectow认为这一新发现为肥胖症的治疗提供了潜在的解决方案。故选A。
A. So, the phone box is becoming a thing of the past. Poor Clark Kent will have to find somewhere else to change!
B. Besides, anyone who happens to leave their mobile phone at home will still have no use for a phone box because they are unlikely to remember the number they want to call.
C. And even if we could remember a number and needed to call it urgently, it would still be more convenient to borrow a mobile from someone else than walk around looking for a phone box.
D. Where does Superman get changed these days? In the comics and earlier films, Clark Kent would pop into a phone box to change into his Superman costume. But these days, phone boxes are hard to find.
E. The main reason for this is simply that we don’t need them anymore. Almost everyone these days carries a mobile phone with them. It is certainly more convenient to take out a mobile and make a call at the touch of a button than to press a series of long numbers on a telephone.
__________→__________→__________→__________→__________
D ②. E ③. B ④. C ⑤. A
【详解】D句以设问“Where does Superman get changed these days?” E句以“The main reason for this is...” C句以 “And even if...” A句以“So, the phone box is becoming a thing of the past.”
Almost one-third of adults aged 65 and older have never used the Internet, and half don’t have Internet access at home. Of those who do use the Internet, nearly half need someone else’s help to set up a new digital device.
____12____ If we do not provide technology access and training to older adults, we shut them out from society, worsening the loneliness among the elderly, which has been associated with depression, functional decline, and death. Technology can serve as an important tool to help reduce these risks, but only if we provide older adults with the skills they need to access our digital world.
There is concern about digital technology use increasing isolation (孤立) among younger populations. ____13____ This is especially true for those who live far away from family or have lost the loved ones they relied on for social support in their younger years. Elders can use online tools to connect with friends and family even if they can no longer physically visit them.
We need programs to improve older adults’ use of technology and confidence in key digital skills. ____14____ They also need to have tech support call lines tailored to older adults less familiar with the Internet.
To be sure, many older adults express a lack of interest in technology. ____15____ Appropriate training can help to overcome these fears and generate interest.
With greater investment in providing accessible devices and digital training, technology has the potential to become a powerful tool for reducing loneliness among older adults, empowering them to connect, create, and contribute online. ____16____
A. This probably results from a fear of it.
B. Technology is surely significant to the society.
C. As one elder put it, “It’s time to catch up and join the world.”
D. However, it’s not certain that this isolation will appear or not.
E. Technology companies should design devices specifically for elders.
F. However, the connection that is possible online can be valuable for older adults.
G. Mastering digital technology is a key aspect of senior citizens’ participation in society.
G 13. F 14. E 15. A 16. C
由上文“Almost one-third of adults aged 65 and older have never used the Internet...nearly half need someone else’s help to set up a new digital device.(65岁及以上的成年人中,近三分之一从未使用过互联网,一半人家里没有网络。在使用互联网的人中,近一半需要他人帮助来设置新数字设备。)”可知,此处呈现老年人数字技术使用的现状。空格后提到“If we do not provide technology access and training to older adults, we shut them out from society, worsening the loneliness among the elderly, which has been associated with depression, functional decline, and death.(如果我们不为老年人提供技术获取和培训,我们就会把他们排除在社会之外,加剧老年人的孤独感,这与抑郁症、功能衰退和死亡有关。)” Mastering digital technology is a key aspect of senior citizens’ participation in society.)
上文提到“There is concern about digital technology use increasing isolation among younger populations.(有人担心数字技术的使用会加剧年轻群体的孤立。)” 空格后“This is especially true for those who live far away from family or have lost the loved ones they relied on for social support in their younger years.(对于那些远离家人或失去了年轻时赖以获得社会支持的亲人的人来说尤其如此。)” However, the connection that is possible online can be valuable for older adults.(然而,在线连接对老年人可能极具价值。)
段落首句指出“We need programs to improve older adults’ use of technology and confidence in key digital skills.(我们需要项目来提升老年人的技术使用和对关键数字技能的信心。)” 空格后“They also need to have tech support call lines tailored to older adults less familiar with the Internet.(他们还需要为不太熟悉互联网的老年人量身定制技术支持电话线。)” Technology companies should design devices specifically for elders.(科技公司应专门为老年人设计设备。)
上文提到“many older adults express a lack of interest in technology.(许多老年人对技术缺乏兴趣。)” 空格后“Appropriate training can help to overcome these fears and generate interest.(适当的培训可帮助克服这些恐惧并激发兴趣。)”,提到“fears(恐惧)”这一原因。A项This probably results from a fear of it.(这可能源于对技术的恐惧。) 中“results from a fear”与后文“overcome these fears”形成因果呼应,解释了老年人缺乏兴趣的原因,其中it指代前文technology。故选A项。
空格位于文末,前文强调“With greater investment in providing accessible devices and digital training, technology has the potential to become a powerful tool for reducing loneliness among older adults, empowering them to connect, create, and contribute online. (随着对提供无障碍设备和数字培训的更多投资,技术有可能成为减少老年人孤独感的有力工具,使他们能够在线连接、创造和贡献。)”,阐述技术对老年人的积极影响。C项As one elder put it, “It’s time to catch up and join the world.”(正如一位老人所说:“是时候赶上并融入世界了。”) 用老人的引言进一步佐证前文观点,“catch up and join the world”与“connect, create, and contribute online”形成语义呼应,以具体实例收束全文,增强说服力。故选C项。

A
When Lola, the pet dog that had accompanied me for 14 years, passed away, I felt a part of me had died with her.
B
A Lack of pre-job training.
