The carriage (马车) ran along the road as Anne chatted cheerfully. “Marilla, I’ve decided to enjoy every moment of this ride, even though you’re sending me back to the orphanage (孤儿院).”
“Tell me about yourself.” Marilla said, looking at the little girl whose hair was tied into two parts. Although there were some small brown marks on her face, they couldn’t hide the bright spirit in her big eyes.
“Oh, what I know about myself isn’t really worth telling. What I imagine about myself is much more interesting.” Anne answered excitedly.
“No, I don’t want any of your imaginations. Just stick to the facts.”
Anne’s smile disappeared. “I’m eleven. I was born in Bolingbroke. My parents died when I was only three months old. After that, neighbors were at their wits’ end. They tried their best to think of solutions, but they failed. Finally, Mrs. Thomas took me, though she was poor and her husband drank. I helped care for her four children until Mr. Thomas died. Then his mother came to take them, but not me. She said there was no room for me.”
Anne felt a little sad but kept with her story, “Then Mrs. Hammond took me because I was good with children.”
“I lived with her over two years, and then Mr. Hammond died and Mrs. Hammond broke up the housekeeping. I had to go to the orphanage. I was there four months until Mrs. Spencer came.”
“Were Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Hammond good to you?” asked Marilla.
Anne’s face turned red and she tried to give a soft smile. “They… meant to be. When people try, you don’t mind if they’re not perfect.”
Marilla asked no more questions. After hearing Anne’s history, Marilla finally understood why she was so thirsty for a real home. It felt more terrible than ever to send Anne back.

Wang Zhenyi was born in Anhui, China in 1768. Women were not allowed to have an education then. So Wang had to depend on teaching herself to meet her endless love for the world. Thankfully, her family supported her. Her grandfather shared with her a good collection of books and the basic rules of astronomy (天文学) while her father taught her math.
At 16, she began to study something hard in astronomy and math on her own. Because she couldn’t get an education in school, she sometimes would feel upset when she didn’t understand some ideas in the book. She said, “I won’t give up because I love the subject so much.”

“Tonight?” I was not ready for this.
“Tonight,” Ned Land repeated. “We are only a few miles off the Spanish coast. If we wait, they’ll find us! And the wind is blowing in the right direction. You agreed, Dr. Aronnax, to escape (逃跑) with me. Remember your promise!” I said nothing. “At nine o’clock,” he continued, I’ll go to the stair with Conceil. You will wait in the library for our signal. I have already put some food in the boat. Everything is done!”
“The sea is quite rough (汹涌的),” I said.
“Yes, but if we don’t go tonight, we will soon be too far from land!” I knew that he was right. I was also frightened. What would Captain Nemo do if he discovered our plan, or if we failed and got caught? We had talked about this for days. Now, I did not want to see him. I stayed in my room as the hours slowly passed.

It was eight o’clock, and I went to the dark library. As I waited, I felt a bump as the submarine (潜水艇) came to rest on the ocean floor.
The library door opened, and Captain Nemo entered. He told me that we were in Vigo Bay. A Spanish admiral (海军上将) had burned his own ships there in 1702 to prevent the British Navy from taking the huge amount of gold they were carrying. He took me to the window. Oliver’s growth in the workhouse was a slow and hard journey. The workhouse was unbelievable, and life there was really harsh. The children were always hungry and poorly dressed, with so little food that could keep them alive.
One day, when it was time for the meal, the children lined up, their eyes filled with hunger and hope. Each received a small bowl of thin gruel (燕麦粥), so watery that it could reflect one’ s face. Usually, they would quickly finish it and stare longingly at their empty bowls.
On this day, Oliver was unbearably hungry. After much hesitation (犹豫), he took up his courage, took his bowl, and walked up to the supervisor (管理员). In a low, shaking voice, he said, “Please, sir, I want some more.” The supervisor, shocked and angry, widened his eyes and shouted, “What did you say? You want some more?” Oliver, though scared, still replied firmly, “Yes, sir.”
All of a sudden, the supervisor flew into great anger. He picked up a stick and struck Oliver hard on the head, then took his arm and pulled him aside, shouting angrily, "You bad child! How dare you! You’ ll pay for this!" The other children were too scared to make a sound and just watched the scene in fear.

My teacher held up a piece of broken glass and asked, “Who broke this window?” She seldom became angry, but she was this time.
I was the one who broke the window. It was caused by a naughty throw of a baseball. If I told her what happened, I would be in a lot of trouble. How would I be able to pay for a big window like that? I didn’t even get pocket money.
“My father is going to be angry,” I thought. I didn’t want to raise my hand, but deep in my mind a voice forced me to do what I should do.
I told the truth, “I did it.” It was hard enough to say what I had done.
My teacher took down a book from one of our library shelves and I had never known my teacher, who would beat a student with it, but I feared she was going to start with me.
“I know how you like birds,” she said. “Here is that field guide about birds that you are always looking through. It belongs to you now. You will not be punished as long as you remember that I am not awarding you for your mistake. I am awarding you for your truthfulness.”
I couldn’t believe it! I wasn’t being punished and I was getting my own bird field guide— the very one that I had been saving up money to buy.

China now has more than 30,000 kilometers of high speed track, and this is expected to increase to 38,000 kilometers by the end of 2025. Fully two thirds of the world’s high speed rail (by length) is in China. Here, we track the exciting technological developments in high speed rail and consider their cultural influence. While the main advantage of the high speed rail lines is convenient for people to get from one city to another as quickly as possible, some of these high speed lines have become popular tourist attractions (places that many tourists visit).
A good example of this is the Hefei-Fuzhou high speed line. Technically speaking, this was one of the most challenging high speed rail routes ever built; nearly 90% of the track was laid either on bridges or in tunnels. However, the amazing views are worth it, as the train goes through some of China’s most beautiful mountainous areas, including the Huangshan and the Wuyi Mountain Ranges.
As China has gained skills and knowledge in high speed rail, it is trying to export its technology to other countries. Its first project on the international market was the line connecting Istanbul with Turkey’s capital, Ankara, 530 kilometers away. This was followed by projects among other countries. Perhaps its most challenging project is a Trans-Asian network connecting China with European countries. Although it is difficult, China will make every effort to take on this plan. It is hoped to be completed by 2030 as a part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (倡议).
Thanks to high speed-rail, the travel time between main cities in China has already been reduced to only a few hours. So this convenience should improve the development within and out of China. No doubt, it will also bring the people of the country closer together, and in time bring about deep social changes.
32.How many kilometers will the high speed track increase by next year in China?
A.About 38,000. B.Over 68,000. C.Over 30,000. D.About 8,000.
33.Why does the writer talk about the Hefei-Fuzhou line in Paragraph 2?

B.To point out how convenient the high speed lines are.
C.To explain high speed lines can be popular tourist attractions.
D.To show the technical development of the high speed lines.
34.What advantage of the high speed rail is mentioned in the text?

“Come and play with me,” the little prince suggested. “I am so unhappy.”
“I cannot play with you,” the fox said, “I am not tamed.”

I carefully saved my food and finally had enough to plant. I built a fence around my garden to keep wild goats away.
When my crop (庄稼) grew fruits, birds discovered it. The birds weren’t afraid of my dog at all! I shot at them, but they came back as soon as I left. Finally, I tried using a scarecrow, and it worked!
During harvest time, I faced a new problem: the tiny food grains (谷粒) fell through my baskets. It took me almost two months to make two mud pots (泥罐)—one for rice, one for wheat (小麦).
Next, I built a mud oven (炉) and made tools from wood and cloth to bake bread. I successfully baked bread in my oven! ▲
Soon, I started dreaming of sailing again in a clean boat. I wanted to explore the island by sea.
I tried flipping (翻转) the old ship’s boat washed ashore but failed. Still, decided to build my own boat. Cut down a strong tree (took weeks!) and spent months shaping it into a boat.
When it was time to put the boat in water, I realized I built it too far from the river. The boat was too heavy to move. I tried digging a canal to bring water to the boat, but it would take 20 years of hard work.
I celebrated my fourth year on the island with two boats, but I was still stuck—no closer to sailing away.

Huck is my name, Huckleberry Finn. The story started when my best friend, Tom Sawyer and I found $12,000 in a cave. That money made us rich. We got $6,000 each. Judge Thatcher, an important man in St. Petersburg, put it in the bank, and now we get a dollar a day as interest.
Then a kind old lady called Douglas invited me to live with her because I haven’t got a family or a home. My mother died a long time ago, and then my dad, Pap, disappeared. He was a violent (暴力的) man especially when he was drunk, which was most of the time, and he often beat me. I didn’t go to school like the other boys. I either lived on the streets or in the woods.
My life changed after I lived with Douglas. She gave me a bed to sleep in and bought new clothes for me. She read stories to me and taught me how to eat at a table. But then her sister Miss Watson arrived. She brought her black slave (奴隶) Jim with her. I liked Jim but I didn’t like Miss Watson very much. She often shouted at me. Then Douglas sent me to school every day. I didn’t like going there at first because learning was very difficult. But when I could read and write a bit, I didn’t mind going.
Several months later, the winter came. One morning I woke up and there was snow on the ground. On my way to school I saw some footprints outside Douglas’s house. There was a cross on the heel of the left one. My heart jumped. Only one person wore boots with a cross on the left heel! Pap!
“He’s heard about my money. And he wants it!” That night I went to see Jim. Jim had a magic ball made of animal hair. It had a spirit inside that could answer people’s questions about the future.

Suddenly, the little prince asked:
—“A sheep—if it eats grass, does it eat flowers, too?”
—“A sheep eats anything it finds.”
—“Even flowers that have thorns (刺)?”
—“Yes, even flowers that have thorns.”
—“Then the thorns— what use are they?”
I did not know. At that moment I was so busy trying to repair my plane that I had no time to share. I answered with the first thing that came into my head:
—“The thorns are of no use at all.”
— “Oh...”
Just as I thought the little prince would keep quiet for some time, he continued:
—“And you actually believe that the flowers”
—“Oh, no! No, no, no! I don’t believe anything. I answered you with the first thing that came into my head. Don’t you see—I am very busy with things of importance!”
—“Things of importance? You talk just like the adults! I know a red-faced gentleman. He has never smelled a flower. He has never looked at a star. He has never loved anyone. He has never done anything in his life but count his money. And all day he says over and over again, just like you: ‘I am busy with things of importance!’ And that makes him so proud. He immerses himself in his own business so much that he is no longer a man—he is a mushroom (蘑菇)!”
—“A what?”
—“A selfish (自私的) mushroom! And so are you! If someone knows there is a flower growing on one star among the millions, it is enough to make him happy just to look at the stars. But if the sheep eats the flower, in one moment all the stars will become dark... And you think that is not important!”
His tears of anger as well as love made me suddenly stop, with tools falling off my hands. I never thought his feeling for a flower could be so strong. I was frozen by his love for flowers, stars and life.
Slowly, I took him in my arms and said softly to him that the flower he loved would not be in danger. I would do anything to protect it. But seeing the tears on the little prince’s face, I could continue no more. What I said earlier, which I wished to take back, had hurt him badly.

At seven o’clock, I had dinner in my room. Only two hours to go! I kept thinking what would happen if we failed or got caught so I had a headache. I walked up and down in my room. As I looked around, I saw that Captain Nemo’s bedroom door was open. The room was empty.
The crew (船员) were gathering the gold from the sand and bringing it to the submarine. Now, I knew how Captain Nemo had become so rich.

Oliver knew he was in big trouble, but he was so hungry. He couldn’t understand why asking for a bit more food led to such treatment. As he was being pulled away, he wondered if there would ever be a better life for him outside the workhouse.
—Adapt from Oliver Twist

All that remains of that day is my memory and the lesson my teacher taught me. That lesson stays with me every day, and it will never be forgotten.

“Come and play with me,” the little prince suggested. “I am so unhappy.”
“I cannot play with you,” the fox said, “I am not tamed.”
“Ah! Please excuse me,” said the little prince. But after some thought, he added: “What does ‘tame’ mean?”
“It means to set up ties,” said the fox. “To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy… But if you tame me, we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world.”
“Please tame me!” said the fox. “You must be patient. Sit down a little distance from me, like this, in the grass. I will watch you out of the corner of my eye, and you will say nothing. Words are the cause of misunderstandings. But each day, you may sit a little closer…”
The next day the prince returned. “It would have been better to come at the same hour,” said the fox. “If you come at four o’clock, I shall begin to be happy by three. The more time passes, the happier I’ll feel, But if you come at any random (随意的) time, I’ll never know when to prepare my heart.”
So the little prince tamed the fox. And when it’s time to leave…
“Ah,” said the fox, “I shall cry.”
“It is your own fault,” said the prince, “I never wished you harm, but you wanted me to tame you.”
“Yes,” said the fox, “But now, look at the golden wheat fields. They will remind me of your hair. And I shall love the sound of the wind in the wheat…”
Then he added, “Go and look again at the roses. You’ll understand yours is unique. Remember: Real importance is unseen.”

【导语】本文讲述了主人公哈克与汤姆发现钱财后,哈克被道格拉斯邀请一起生活,以及他的生活变化,还提到了他看到疑似父亲的脚印的故事。

Clara shook her head. “Papa says the mountains are too far away, and the journey would be too difficult for me.”
