Do you ever feel you can’t think clearly after playing on the phones for too long? If you do, welcome to the world of “brain rot (脑腐化)”!
The phrase (短语) “brain rot” first appeared in 1854, but now it refers (特指) to what happens when someone spends too much time online. The frequency of using the phrase keeps growing these years. In 2024, the Oxford even name it Word of the Year.
So what will happen if you have brain rot? Well, sometimes it seems like your brain is a blank for a while. For example, you start forgetting things that happened just now. You might find yourself walking into a room and forgetting why you’re there. Looking for a thing that is just in your hand is another symptom (症状).
The bad sides go beyond those funny things. Brain rot can cause the loss of critical (批判的) thinking. Your emotions (情绪) may experience ups and downs more often.
But don’t be afraid! Solving the problem doesn’t need any medicine. Start by cutting down your screen time. Remember, living without apps like TikTok or Xiaohongshu for a few hours won’t be too hard. Try to take a break to enjoy the real world. You can join in physical activities, read real books (not the videos that can let you read one in 3 minutes), and talk to real persons face-to-face.
Just like a garden needs care to grow healthy plants, your brain needs good habits to stay strong. Take care of it, so that more beautiful flowers of creativity and happiness can bloom (盛开) inside!

Zhalong is a nature reserve (自然保护区) in Heilongjiang in northeast China. It is one of the world’s most important wetlands. The area offers food and shelter to wildlife. It is an ideal home for different kinds of planets, fish and birds.
Many birds live comfortably in Zhalong Reserve all year round, but some only stay for a short time. There are many fish in the wetlands, and the birds can easily catch them for food. Zhalong Nature Reserve is an important living area for red-crowned cranes. They are rare with less than 2000 in the whole world. Some of them live in Zhalong.
Some people want to change the wetlands to make more space for farms and buildings. I think that’s really bad because there will be less and less space for wildlife. More and more birds are facing danger because they do not have enough living space. Many of them died. The Chinese government wants to protect these endangered birds, so they can be safe in Zhalong.
Every year a lot of tourists go to Zhalong to watch birds. This year members of our Bird-watching Club are going to study the different kinds of birds in Zhalong and the changes of their numbers. The study will begin next month.
We do a bird count once a year. We need more people to help us count and do something to help the birds. Many people do not know the importance of the wetlands. We hope this information will help them understand it and make them take active action to protect wildlife.

D. All birds stay in Zhalong Nature Reserve all year round.
12. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To ask people to protect the wetlands and wildlife.
B. To make people know about the Bird-watching Club.
C. To ask more visitors to visit Zhalong Nature Reserve.
D. To stop people from watching birds in Zhalong Nature Reserve.

①An ageing population (人口老龄化) is a world-wide problem. Many countries are looking for ways to give the old better care.

There was a little boy whose name was Peter. He lived in a village close to the sea. The villagers built sea walls to keep sea water from the doors of the houses, but once the sea walls almost put the village in great danger.
One day, Peter was walking on his way back home along the sea wall when it began to rain. Suddenly, he saw a hole in the wall. From it the sea water was running. Peter shouted for help because he knew the hole meant that the sea was making its way through the sea wall, but no answer came. He realized he should do something else as quickly as possible, or the sea water could be pouring over the whole village. He started to run to his village. At the same time, the rain became heavier and heavier.
It was getting dark, but Peter ran on and on. He felt cold and hungry. In the rainstorm, he fell down over and over again. Many times he thought about giving up, but he fought on. He remembered his father’s words, “Lots of strong men have tried their best to build the walls which can keep the village safe from danger. The sea walls are really important.”
Finally, when the boy’s father saw him, Peter had been black and blue all over. The boy told the villagers what had happened to the sea wall. They repaired it in time. “Thank God! They ________ the meeting until next Friday.
【答案】decided to put off

47. 为什么不和朋友好好相处呢?
Why don’t you ________ friends?
【答案】get on well with##get along well with
【解析】
【详解】句意:为什么不和朋友好好相处呢?根据中英文提示,空格处缺少“与……好好相处”的表达,可以用动词短语“get on/along well with sb”;“Why don’t you+动词原形”是表示提建议的常用句型,意为“为什么不……呢”,所以这里用动词原形。故填get on/along well with。

51. 你一到家就给我打电话,好吗?
____________________________________________________
【答案】Call me as soon as you get home, will you?
