Born in 1930,in Ningbo,Tu Youyou has become the first female scientist of the People's Republic of China to receive a Nobel Prize for her discovery of ginghaosu.1. 但是这个过程是漫长又辛苦的. In 1969, Tu 2 headed a team to find a cure for malaria. After numerous experiments and failure, she succeeded in making a ginghao extract which could treat malaria in mice in October 1971. 2.但是屠呦呦的团队还是面临很多问题. For instance, they were not be able to produce enough qinghao extract because research resources and good equipment were in short supply.3. And they did not have sufficient safety data to start trials on patients.Instead of giving up,they managed to find solutions to the problems.Their efforts finally bore fruit. In November1972, they 7 successfully isolated ginghaosu, a pure, stronger qinghao extract and now a key part of many malaria medicines. Thanks to the discovery, malaria patients now have had8 greatly increased chance of survival. 4.Over 40 years later,Tu was eventually awarded the Nobel Prize. She encouraged scientists to further explore the treasure house of traditional Chinese medicine. 5. It is likely that inspired by the wisdom of TCM,scientists will discover more medicines which are of great benefit to global health care.

1.When I was younger, I thought science would make good things for everybody. It was obviously useful; it was good. But then during the war I worked on the atomic bomb. 2. This result of science was obviously very serious—it represented the destruction of people and it put our future at risk. I had to ask myself, “Is there some evil involved in science?” Put another way, what is the value of the science I had long devoted myself to—the thing I had loved—when I saw what terrible things it could do? 3.这是一个我需要回答的问题. I thought long and hard about this question, and I will try to answer it in this talk. The first way in which science is of value is familiar to everyone: 4. 科学知识能让我们做各种各样的事. Of course, if we make good things, it is not only to the credit of science; it is also to the credit of the moral choice which led us to good work. 5.Scientific knowledge is an enabling power to do either good or bad—but it does not carry instructions on how to apply it. Such power has obvious value—even though the power may be negated by what one does with it.
