After graduating from Ontario College of Teachers,I became a teacher at a oneroom country school in Aldborough Township.
That first day of school as a 19yearold female teacher was a frightening experience. It was one thing to have graduated as a successful student;it was another thing to face a classroom of little faces that were waiting for the “new teacher”.I had a classroom of 21 children of different shapes and sizes. The youngest was five going on six and the eldest was 16.
There were two doors for entrance in my school, one for the girls, one for the boys and just inside each door was a chemical toilet — no outdoor facilities for us! The heat in the building was a woodburning furnace (火炉) down in the basement.Tending the furnace was one of my responsibilities.Luckily,I knew a bit about starting a fire,so the school didn't burn down.
What I found most difficult was that a parent might take a child out of school for any reason.I had one Dutch family, whose father would keep the children out of school to help with the farm work. Finally,I got tired of this and sent an education officer to solve the problem.Needless to say,I was very unpopular with that father from then on,but the children came to school much more regularly!
In the classroom, the older students helped the younger ones with learning,as well as with putting on coats and hats.If someone's lunch was forgotten, everyone shared a bit of their food.We were a family. We had good times and bad times, but we kept learning.Far beyond maths, social studies, reading, grammar and writing,we learned how to get along with each other.
I loved teaching at this small school and knew I was teaching the children about life as much as about subjects.I'd like to believe some students will have an influence on the world that will last long after I am gone.

A.A Dutch family hated her.
B.The students preferred farm work.

A.They cared about each other.

C.They laughed away bad times.
D.They did well in almost every subject.

(2024·江西抚州高一期末)When someone tells me that they're going to spend just 3 days in Paris, I feel like they're most likely not going to love it. I mean, it's possible to have a great time if you do it right and put what you want to see at the first place. During such a short visit most tourists head to see the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Louvre and some other tourist attractions, and therefore experience crowds, long lines and not the real local Paris.
Take your pick and spend some time actually enjoying these things instead of rushing through everything. I'm not telling you not to see these famous landmarks, but in order to fully feel the Paris atmosphere, you need to stay in the city longer. A stay in Paris just for a weekend seems far from seeing all the great things.
Almost everyone is dreaming of getting to the top of the Eiffel Tower. But the moment you start approaching the tower you might realize that it's not very romantic, as it's surrounded by a ton of visitors and annoying vendors (小贩). The place is crowded, and lines take forever no matter when you visit it.
It's hard to find a romantic spot unless you book a dinner on top of the Eiffel Tower. It's something you will only do once, as it's not the best fine dining you've ever had—you're doing it just for the experience. However, if you climb the stairs behind the Croatian Embassy you may be able to find a quiet spot overlooking the tower. The view is wonderful and definitely worth it, especially at night when the tower starts blinking!
I recommend you to see the city from up high from the top of the Tour Montparnasse, Arc de Triomphe, or even a carousel (旋转木马) in Tuileries, and actually have the Eiffel Tower in your view.
8.What can be inferred from the first paragraph?
A.You can only see crowds at tourist attractions.
B.He who has a short visit doesn't love Paris.
C.Visitor can have a good time traveling in Paris in three days.
D.It takes more time to experience the real Paris.
9.What is TRUE about visiting Paris according to the author?
A.Fully feeling the atmosphere of the city.
B.Only visiting the famous landmarks of the city.
C.Seeing the whole city at the weekend.
D.Rushing through all attractions in the city.
10.How does a tourist usually feel after visiting the Eiffel Tower?
A.Delighted. B.Sad.
C.Exhausted. D.Romantic.
11.Which can be the best title for the passage?
A.The atmosphere of Paris.
B.The tips of visiting Paris better.
C.The view of the Eiffel Tower.
D.The tourist attractions in Paris.

Kids and teenagers who volunteer aren't just helping their community. They might also be helping themselves. That's according to a new research published in JAMA Network Open, in May.
Kids who participated in community service were 34% more likely to be in very good physical health than those who didn't participate, the study found. And those who volunteered were 66% more likely to be considered doing well in general. Kids aged 12 and older who volunteered were 25% less likely to have anxiety than peers who didn't. The findings come from survey data provided by the parents of some 50,000 kids in the United States aged 6 to 17. About half of those parents reported that their kids did volunteer work.
Studies like this have limitations. Parents answered questions about their kids' health and communityservice activity. But a parent might not know if their child experiences anxiety or considers themselves to be doing well in general. This type of data also can't prove cause and effect. It can only uncover connections. So it's not possible to say for sure that volunteering leads to better mental and physical health. It could be that people in good health are more likely to have the energy or desire to volunteer.
But the data comes at an important time for youth mental health. In recent years, rates of depression and anxiety have risen among young people. More than 40% of high school students reported experiencing feelings of sadness or hopelessness. So there's a clear need for accessible and effective mental health resources. Giving back to the community may be one such resource. And this study isn't the only one to reach that conclusion. Previous research has also found links between volunteering and wellbeing among adults. Serving the community seems to help people feel a sense of purpose. And it makes them feel connected to those around them. Generosity has also been shown to boost happiness and improve physical health. It might be a practice worth doing.
12.How many kids in the US who volunteered were less likely to be anxious?
A.12,500. B.17,000.
C.33,000. D.50,000.
13.What can we learn from the third paragraph?
A.Healthy people are less likely to volunteer.
B.Volunteering surely leads to better mental and physical health.
C.Parents know their kids' mental and physical health very well.
D.There is a relationship between health and communityservice activity.
14.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.There are various mental health resources.
B.People of all ages will serve the community.
C.Serving the community will benefit mental health.
D.High school students are suffering mental health problems.
15.Which proverb best matches the article?
A.He laughs best who laughs last.
B.The rose is in her hand, the flavor in mine.
C.The longest journey begins with the first step.
D.Treat other people as you hope they will treat you.

“Have you decided on your major?” my parents inquired.
“Bioengineering,of course.” I responded without the slightest hesitation.
I entered this world with Poland syndrome,a disease that prevented the formation of my right arm and pectoral muscle(胸肌).My parents, believing that playing with Lego could enhance my dexterity(灵巧),gifted me my first kit when I was five.Struggling to piece the components together,I crafted my first Lego work—a car.As I got older,I grew obsessed with Lego Technic,a more advanced range, and how to use it to build more delicate structures.By the age of nine,I had fashioned my first prosthetic arm(义肢) using Lego Technic—a simple box that perfectly accommodated my right arm.
This early creation sparked my drive for further exploration.Years later,I developed another prosthetic arm that I called the MK1,which had fingers,a motor,a pressure sensor,a movable elbow joint, and a grabber capable of picking things up.
Before constructing it,I had already decided against traditional prosthetics. Not because they were ineffective, but because playing with Lego did significantly improve my dexterity, helping me adapt to my condition. However,a more frustrating reason was that prosthetics were too expensive. My parents and I had looked into getting one a few years earlier, only to be discouraged by the prohibitive price. So,I concluded that I might not need one because I was managing well without.Nevertheless, the joy of creating prosthetics with Lego remained, and I continued making them purely for the fun of it.
As the years passed,my creations evolved from MK1 to the more advanced and comfortable MKV.It featured a control unit that could send and receive orders from sensors on the arm to the motors, with cables that contract like muscles.
One day,a couple with their eightyearold son,who lost both arms in an accident, reached out to me after learning about my creations.Short of money, they couldn't afford wellfunctioning prosthetics.“Daniel,” the father earnestly asked,“we were wondering if you could possibly help build a set of prosthetics for our son.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
I knew it would be a challenging and demanding task, but I responded with a “yes”.

The Shanghai World Financial Centre部分中的“Completed in 2008,SWFC took over 10 years to complete due to shortages of money and the construction delays.(SWFC于2008年竣工,由于资金短缺和施工延误,历时10多年才竣工。)”

根据第二段中“That first day of school as a 19yearold female teacher was a frightening experience...that were waiting for the ‘new teacher’.(作为一名19岁的女教师,上学的第一天是一段可怕的经历。作为一名成功的学生毕业是一回事;面对一群等待‘新老师’的小脸是另一回事。) ”可知,作者第一天当老师感到害怕,是因为作者面临的情况和自己当学生时完全不同。故选B。
5.A 推理判断题。根据第三段中“There were two doors for entrance in my school...a woodburning furnace (火炉) down in the basement.(我的学校有两扇门,一扇给女生,一扇给男生,每扇门里面都有一个化学厕所——我们没有室外设施!大楼里的暖气来自地下室的一个烧木头的炉子。)”可知,学校没有户外设备,暖气来自烧木头的炉子,由此推知学校里的设施比较落后。故选A。
根据第四段中“What I found most difficult was that a parent might take a child out of school for any reason.(我发现最困难的是父母可能会以任何理由让孩子离开学校。)”

根据第二段第一句“Take your pick and spend some time actually enjoying these things instead of rushing through everything.(选择你喜欢的,花点时间真正享受这些事情,而不是匆忙完成每件事。)”
根据第二段中“Kids aged 12 and older who volunteered were 25%...kids in the United States aged 6 to 17. (参加志愿者活动的12岁及以上的孩子比没有参加的同龄人患焦虑症的可能性低25%。这一发现来自美国5万名6至17岁儿童的父母提供的调查数据。)”可知,在美国,约有12,500名(=50,000×25%)做志愿者的孩子不太容易焦虑。故选A。
根据第三段中“This type of data also can't prove cause and effect...are more likely to have the energy or desire to volunteer. (这种类型的数据也不能证明因果关系。它只能揭示联系。因此,不能肯定地说志愿活动能带来更好的心理和身体健康。这可能是因为身体健康的人更有可能有精力或意愿去做志愿者。)”可推知,虽然志愿活动和心理和身体健康之间的因果关系尚不能确定,但是两者之间的确是有联系的。故选D。
14.C 段落大意题。根据最后一段的内容,尤其是其中的“Previous research has also found links between volunteering and wellbeing among adults...It might be a practice worth doing.
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Kids and teenagers who volunteer aren't just helping their community. They might also be helping themselves. (做志愿者的孩子和青少年不仅仅是在帮助他们的社区。他们也可能是在帮助自己。)”可知,文章围绕一项调查研究的发现展开,主要介绍了其发现内容:做志愿者的孩子和青少年自身也受益于志愿活动,他们的身心健康水平更高,同时指出了该研究的局限性和意义。因此,B项“赠人玫瑰,手留余香”最契合该研究发现的结果。A.
16.B 上文“Starting with a new school can be difficult. Everything seems to be different, and you don't even know where to go for your own classes.(从一所新学校开始可能会很困难。一切似乎都不一样,你甚至不知道去哪里上自己的课。)”说明适应一所新学校会很难,比如你甚至不知道去哪里上课,这是其中一个困难,选项B“结交新朋友也很困难。”承接上文,说明了适应新学校的另外一个困难。故选B。
17.D 小标题“Be yourself(做你自己)”以及下文“If some people don't accept you...People often stay together because they have similar interests.(如果有些人不接受你,他们就不是你需要的那种朋友。人们经常待在一起,因为他们有相似的兴趣。)”说明不要为了与他人建立良好关系而改变自己,选项D“永远不要为了适应而改变自己。”承接标题,并引出下文,是对下文的总结与概括。故选D。
18.A 下文“Remember to be nice to the people you meet...Also, remember to be as helpful as possible!(记得对你在新学校遇到的人要友善。如果你认为你会说一些可能让他们感到难过的话,不要说任何话,如果他们和你说话,只需点头。此外,请记住尽可能提供帮助!)”说明要友善对待在新学校遇到的人,选项A“待人友善。”可以概括本段内容,为最佳小标题,A选项中“friendly”与下文的“nice”同义。故选A。
19.E 上文“A smile goes a long way...Raise your head and make eye contact with other people.(微笑会有很大的帮助。当你在大厅里行走时,不要把眼睛盯着地板。抬起头,与其他人进行眼神交流。)”说明走路时要抬头看别人,并且进行眼神接触,选项E“如果你看到你认识的人,微笑或说‘嗨’。”承接上文,走路时要抬头看人,遇到认识的要微笑或打招呼。故选E。

第二节
One possible version:
I knew it would be a challenging and demanding task, but I responded with a “yes”.The boy lifted his head with his once lifeless eyes now glittering with a spark of hope.I beamed at him with a radiant smile and without any delay, embarked on the task. The subsequent days witnessed how I carefully selected the Lego pieces that catered to the boy's interests and intricately integrated practical components to enhance its flexibility.Days turned into weeks, and the boycustomized prosthetics finally took shape. It's time for them to fulfill their intended purpose.
I rushed to the boy's home and secured the prosthetics onto him. Holding breath,we anxiously awaited the result — they worked! The room erupted with cheers! The boy expressed his gratitude and sprinted to his parents to envelop them in the biggest hug he hadn't been able to give for years. The scene was truly inspiring.Never had I imagined that my creations, born out of mere fun, would someday make such a profound difference. It is on that day that I made up my mind to commit myself to making a lasting impact in the realm of prosthetic innovation.
