At 1,345 meters above sea level, Ben Nevis is not the world’s most difficult mountain to climb. But things get considerably tricky if instead of hiking shoes you put on a pair of 5-inch high heels, especially if you’re a guy. One English teenager recently proved that it was not impossible.
Ben Conway, a 19-year-old art student from London, recently took up the challenge as a way to stand out in an application for a scholarship for the School of Communication Arts in Brixton. He started his unusual high-heel climb at 8 am, on June 27, and was joined by Callum MacKenzie Allen, a friend from his art foundation year, who videotaped the whole thing for a two-minute video that was used as his application project. The whole climb took five hours and wasn’t the smoothest experience.
Halfway up Ben Nevis, one of his shoes broke, so he had to tape the shoes to his feet to make sure they stayed on. The weather didn’t make it easy for him either, as he claimed that it rained pretty much the whole time, and he had to go against 40 to 50 miles an hour winds. Due to these difficult conditions, Ben and his friend had to turn back after reaching 900 meters up the mountain.
Besides providing a unique art school application project, the high-heel climb also allowed the 19-year-old to raise some money for worthy causes (事业), like Sal’s Shoes, which provides footwear for barefoot children around the world.
“Raising money for charity brings happiness to people’s lives and if I can do something ridiculous and bring someone happiness, then that’s what it’s all about,” Ben said.
23.Which can replace the underlined word “tricky” in Paragraph 1?
A.Pleasant. B.Boring. C.Difficult. D.Interesting.
24.Why did Allen videotape the high-heel climb for Ben?
A.To prove nothing is impossible. B.To record a special experience.
C.To develop their friendship. D.To assist in Ben’s application.
25.What does Paragraph 3 focus on?
A.The difficulties in the climb. B.The climbing way.
C.The terrible weather. D.The unexpected things.
26.Which word can best describe Ben’s story?
A.Confusing. B.Inspiring. C.Exciting. D.Frightening.

New research suggests people may not always want help in sticking to their New Year’s resolutions, challenging the common view of a “planner-doer” conflict in behavioral science.
A team from UK and German universities surveyed 240 adults to explore how people identify with their “planner” (self-control-focused) and “doer” (desire-driven) selves. Published in Behavioral Public Policy, the study found that while participants differed in the relative importance they attached to desire and self-control, overall, attitudes in favour of desire were almost as common as attitudes in favour of self-control.
Public policies designed to “push” people towards healthy lifestyles are often based on the grounds that people think of their planners as their true selves and dislike the actions of their doers. However, in their study published today in the journal Behavioral Public Policy, the authors argue this assumption overlooks the possibility that people value desire as well as self-control and approve of their own flexible attitudes to resolutions.
Robert Sugden, a professor of economics at UEA, said, “Our key message is not about whether pushes towards healthy lifestyles are good for people’s long-term health or happiness. It is about whether such pushes can be based on the grounds that they help individuals to overcome what they themselves acknowledge as self-control problems.” For example, respondents favored desire for sugary drinks or desserts yet prioritized self-control for exercise — viewing small indulgences (放纵) as positive expressions of desire.
In the online survey, participants recalled either a joyful meal or a satisfying health effort, then expressed their opinions about self-control and desire. Surprisingly, the differences in recalled episode didn’t significantly affect their attitudes. Most agreed both long-term planning and occasional small joys were important.
The study concludes identifying when people want help with self-control is more complex than thought, emphasizing that desires deserve equal attention. Breaking a health-oriented resolution by ordering a dessert is perhaps a more positive way than not taking one’s daily run on a wet day.
27.What does the “planner-doer” conflict refer to?
A.The difference between formal and informal help.
B.The conflict between individual and public interests.
C.The contrast between past experiences and future plans.
D.The gap between long-term goals and short-term desires.
28.Why do public policies “push” people toward healthy lifestyles?
A.To promote desire in daily life.
B.To reduce social pressure on individuals.
C.To help people overcome self-control problems.
D.To balance short-term joys and long-term health
29.What did the study find about desire?
A.It is valued almost as much as self-control.
B.It is strongly influenced by past experiences.
C.It is less important than self-control for health.
D.It is mainly expressed through skipping exercise.
30.What can we infer from the text?
A.All people regret breaking their New Year’s resolutions.
B.Small indulgences are seen as harmful by most participants.
C.The “push” policies may not agree with people’s actual needs.
D.Past happy meals make people less likely to value self-control.
E
A majority of people desire to become the extroverts (外向的人). 31 For example, quiet people are good observers. In such a fast-paced world, quiet people, with less time spent chatting, have more energy to observe situations and people. Ask a quiet person their thoughts on a situation or person, and you may be surprised to receive an extremely reflective answer.
32 Quiet people think before they speak. In a work discussion with colleagues, the quiet men and women hardly speak suddenly, and instead, they listen carefully. With less time spent talking, quiet people have time to really think before they speak. 33 Because they are so selective with words, when they speak, it seems like the whole world stops to listen to what they have to say.
34 With their quiet, relaxed temperament (性情), quiet people are often the ears that others run to for advice, and are also respected for their good listening skills and cautious words. Additionally, quiet people rarely annoy others in their presence and they often make others feel at ease.
Quiet people work on a more productive basis. Quiet people tend to be free from the distractions that often come from being around people all day long. 35 It is common to observe a quiet co-worker, alone in his or her office for hours at a time working on the quiet focus.
A.Less talking means more reflecting and observing, so they won’t miss much.
B.Quiet people seem accessible.
C.Actually quiet people have their own strengths, though.
D.Consequently, they are capable of accomplishing a lot on their quiet focus.
E.It is rare to see a quiet friend speak rudely.
F.In this way, they will take the time to ensure what they are saying is true.
G.Quiet people are more intelligent.

Three months later was the Middle School Championship Baseball Game of the spring season! The winners would all get trophies (奖杯), Jonas was determined to bring home a trophy to put on his shelf for he had never won one before.
He insisted on practicing in the stadium with friends every day. Day in and day out, the gloves became worn-out. Jonas thought, “I want a pair of new baseball gloves for better practice!“
Jonas passed by a store and saw a pair of delicate gloves, which cost thirty-five dollars. But when Jonas asked for the new baseball gloves, his mother only sighed. “Your birthday isn’tuntil July, ” she said. “If you want the gloves sooner than that, you will have to buy it yourself. If you want something, earn it by yourself. ”
Jonas thought hard. He was too young to drive to work like Dad, and he couldn’t turn his bedroom into an office to work at home like Mom. He went to his favorite thinking spot to look at the bird feeder in his back yard.
As Jonas was thinking about getting a job, it began to snow. At first there were only a few flakes (雪花), but soon the ground turned white.
“I know!” cried Jonas. “I’ll shovel (铲) the sidewalks on snow days. If I’m fast, I can do a lot of houses and make a lot of money. ”
So Jonas put on his warmest sweater and fastened the button of his winter coat. He also added scarf, gloves and a hat. Then he went into the garage to grab a shovel.
Jonas started next door. He rang the bell and asked Mr. Travers if he would like his sidewalks shoveled. “Yes,” said Mr. Travers. “But you should wait until it stops snowing before you start or you will have to do it twice.”
“I’ll be back!” said Jonas. He went around the block to see who would like their walks shoveled after the storm. He had eight customers by the time he got back to his own house.

【答案】23.C 24.D 25.A 26.B
根据第一段中划线词前“Ben Nevis is not the world’s most difficult mountain to climb. (本尼维斯山并不是世界上最难攀登的山峰。)”及划线词后“if instead of hiking shoes you put on a pair of 5-inch high heels, especially if you’re a guy. (如果你穿上一双5英寸的高跟鞋,而不是徒步鞋,特别是如果你是个男生。)”结合转折词“But”可知,如果穿上5英寸的高跟鞋,尤其是对于男性来说,事情会变得相当困难。“tricky” 在这里的意思是“棘手的”或“困难的”,与difficult同义。故选C项。
24.细节理解题。根据第二段中“He started his unusual high-heel climb at 8 am, on June 27, and was joined by Callum MacKenzie Allen, a friend from his art foundation year, who videotaped the whole thing for a two-minute video that was used as his application project. (他于6月27日上午8点开始了这次不同寻常的高跟鞋攀登,并且他的艺术基础课程的朋友Callum MacKenzie Allen也加入了他,全程录像制作成一个两分钟的视频,用于他的申请项目。)” 可知,Callum MacKenzie Allen 录制了整个过程,以便Ben用于他的申请项目。 因此,Allen 录制视频是为了帮助Ben的申请。故选D项。
25.主旨大意题。根据第二段最后一句“The whole climb took five hours and wasn’t the smoothest experience. (整个攀登过程历时五个小时,而且并不是一段顺利的经历。)”及第三段内容“Halfway up Ben Nevis, one of his shoes broke, so he had to tape the shoes to his feet to make sure they stayed on. The weather didn’t make it easy for him either, as he claimed that it rained pretty much the whole time, and he had to go against 40 to 50 miles an hour winds. Due to these difficult conditions, Ben and his friend had to turn back after reaching 900 meters up the mountain. 故选A项。
根据文章倒数第二段“Besides providing a unique art school application project, the high-heel climb also allowed the 19-year-old to raise some money for worthy causes (事业), like Sal’s Shoes, which provides footwear for barefoot children around the world. (除了提供一个独特的艺术学校申请项目外,这次高跟鞋攀登还让这位19岁的年轻人为一些值得支持的事业筹款,比如Sal’s Shoes项目,该项目为世界各地赤脚的孩子们提供鞋子。)”可知,Ben的故事展示了他不仅为了申请奖学金而挑战自我,还为慈善事业筹集资金,故可推知他的故事是鼓舞人心的。故选B项。
D
【答案】27.D 28.C 29.A 30.C
根据第一段“New research suggests people may not always want help in sticking to their New Year’s resolutions, challenging the common view of a “planner-doer” conflict in behavioral science.(新的研究表明,人们在坚持新年决心时可能并不总是需要帮助,这对行为科学中“计划者-执行者”冲突的普遍观点提出了挑战)”以及第二段“A team from UK and German universities surveyed 240 adults to explore how people identify with their “planner” (self-control-focused) and “doer” (desire-driven) selves.(一个来自英国和德国大学的团队对240名成年人进行了调查,以探究人们如何认同自己的“计划者”(以自我控制为中心)和“执行者”(以欲望驱动)身份)”可知,“计划者-执行者”冲突指的是长期目标与短期欲望之间的差距。故选D。
根据第三段“Public policies designed to “push” people towards healthy lifestyles are often based on the grounds that people think of their planners as their true selves and dislike the actions of their doers.(旨在“推动”人们走向健康生活方式的公共政策,往往是基于人们认为自己的计划者才是真正的自我,而不喜欢执行者的行为)”以及第四段“It is about whether such pushes can be based on the grounds that they help individuals to overcome what they themselves acknowledge as self-control problems.(问题是,这种推动是否可以基于它们帮助个人克服他们自己承认的自我控制问题)”可知,公共政策推动人们走向健康生活方式是为了帮助人们克服自我控制问题。故选C。
根据第二段“Published in Behavioral Public Policy, the study found that while participants differed in the relative importance they attached to desire and self-control, overall, attitudes in favour of desire were almost as common as attitudes in favour of self-control.(发表在《行为公共政策》上,这个研究发现,虽然参与者对欲望和自我控制的重视程度不同,但总体而言,支持欲望的态度和支持自我控制的态度几乎同样普遍)”可知,研究发现欲望几乎和自我控制一样受到重视。故选A。
根据第三段“However, in their study published today in the journal Behavioral Public Policy, the authors argue this assumption overlooks the possibility that people value desire as well as self-control and approve of their own flexible attitudes to resolutions.(然而,在今天发表在《行为公共政策》杂志上的研究中,作者认为这一假设忽略了人们既重视欲望又重视自我控制,并认可自己对决心持灵活态度的可能性)”以及最后一段“The study concludes identifying when people want help with self-control is more complex than thought, emphasizing that desires deserve equal attention.(研究得出结论,确定人们何时需要自我控制方面的帮助比想象中更为复杂,强调欲望同样值得关注)”可推断出,“推动”政策可能并不符合人们的实际需求。故选C。

【答案】31.C 32.A 33.F 34.B 35.D
根据第一段首句“A majority of people desire to become the extroverts.(大多数人渴望成为外向的人)”和第三句“For example, quiet people are good observers.(例如,安静的人是很好的观察者)”可知,这是将外向的人和安静的人作对比,说明安静的人的优势。
根据这段话中的“Quiet people think before they speak. In a work discussion with colleagues, the quiet men and women hardly speak suddenly, and instead, they listen carefully. With less time spent talking, quiet people have time to really think before they speak.(安静的人在开口前会思考。在与同事的工作讨论中,安静的男女很少突然发言,相反,他们会认真倾听。由于说话时间较少,安静的人有时间在开口前进行真正的思考)”可推断,安静的人虽然说话不多,但他们会多思考,A项“少说话意味着多反思与多观察,因此他们不会错过太多”,与推断相吻合。故选A。
33.第三题在第二段中间,根据它前面一句“With less time spent talking, quiet people have time to really think before they speak.(由于花在交谈上的时间较少,安静的人有时间在开口前进行认真思考)”和后面一句“Because they are so selective with words, when they speak, it seems like the whole world stops to listen to what they have to say.(因为他们用词极为考究,所以当他们开口时,仿佛整个世界都停下来聆听他们要说的话)”可推知,由于安静的人热衷思考,他们开口说话时更有可信度。
根据下文“With their quiet, relaxed temperament(性情), quiet people are often the ears that others run to for advice, and are also respected for their good listening skills and cautious words. Additionally, quiet people rarely annoy others in their presence and they often make others feel at ease.(性格安静、沉稳的人,往往是他人寻求建议时会找的倾听者,他们良好的倾听技巧和谨慎的言辞也备受尊重。此外,安静的人在与人相处时很少惹恼他人,他们常常能让别人感到自在)”可知,安静的人平易近人,B项“安静的人似乎平易近人”,与推断相吻合。故选B。
35.第五题在第四段中间,结合它前面一句“Quiet people tend to be free from the distractions that often come from being around people all day long.(安静的人往往不会受到那些常常源于整日与人相处而产生的干扰)”和后面一句“It is common to observe a quiet co-worker, alone in his or her office for hours at a time working on the quiet focus.(人们常常会看到一位安静的同事,独自在办公室里一待就是几个小时,专注地安静工作)”可知,安静的人工作不会分心,工作效率高,本题位于它们之间,要满足承上启下的原则,体现安静的人能专注工作并取得成绩,D项表示“因此,凭借沉稳的专注力,他们能够收获丰硕成果”,与推断相吻合。故选D。

I desire to be an English teacher in ten years. My former English teacher Miss Liu’s enthusiasm for teaching and love for students deeply influenced me. I hope to inspire students’ passion for English just as she did.
To fulfill this wish, I spare no effort to make preparations. I read English books daily to expand my vocabulary. I also participate in English debates at school, which improves my logical thinking and speaking skills.

Standing on Mr Traver’s sidewalks, initially, Jonas was sort of clumsy, but soon he became so expert that it took only 20 minutes to shovel the snow to the sides of the road. When Mr Travers handed Jonas a 5-dollar bill with satisfaction, his face cracked into a smile. Soaked with sweat, he even took off his winter clothes. Waving goodbye, Jonas headed for the second client’s, doing the work in the same order he talked to his neighbors. 3 hours flashed by before he knew it. With all the work finished, each neighbour gave him a thumb-up, as well as the reward, which added up to 40 dollars.
Tired but happy, Jonas looked at the forty dollars earned from his work. It was enough for the gloves. Hardly had Jonas taken the new baseball gloves in the store when he began to practice. His perfect performance won the opportunity to take part in the championship Baseball Game. Hard practice paid off, he and his friends won the first prize. When he took his trophy home and put it on his shelf, his mother spotted he had become a maturer teenager, who could cope with problems life held in store for him.
