The practice of students endlessly copying letters and sentences from a blackboard is a thing of the past. With the coming of new technologies like computers and smartphones, writing by hand has become something of nostalgic(怀旧的)skill. However, while today's educators are using more and more technology in their teaching, many believe basic handwriting skills are still necessary for students to be successful—both in school and in life.
Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, says it's important to continue teaching handwriting and help children acquire the skill of writing by hand.
Berninger and her colleagues conducted a study that looked at the ability of students to complete various writing tasks—both on a computer and by hand. The study, published in 2009, found that when writing with a pen and paper, participants wrote longer essays and more complete sentences and had a faster word production rate.
In a more recent study, Berninger looked at what role spelling plays in a student's writing skills and found that how well children spell is tied to how well they can write. "Spelling makes some of the thinking parts of the brain active, which helps us access our vocabulary, word meaning and concepts. It is allowing our written language to connect with ideas." Berninger said.
"In our computer age, some people believe that we don't have to teach spelling because we have spell checks," she said. "But until a child has a functional spelling, they won't have the knowledge to choose the correct spelling among the options given by the computer."
8. What makes writing by hand a thing of the past?
A. The absence of blackboard in classrooms.
B. The use of new technologies in teaching.
C. The lack of practice in handwriting.
D. The popular use of smartphones.
9. Berninger's study published in 2009 ________.
A. focused on the difference between writing by hand and on a computer.
B. indicated that students prefer to write with a pen and paper.
C. found that good essays are made up of long sentences.
D. discussed the importance of writing speed.
10. Which of the following best shows the role of spelling?
A. Spelling is unrelated to writing skills.
B. Spelling plays a vital part in writing.
C. Spelling has negative effect on writing.
D. Spelling slows down us to express ideas.
11. What conclusion could be drawn from the passage?
A. Computers can take place of handwriting.
B. Handwriting functions only in the past.
C. Basic handwriting skills are still needed.
D. Handwriting is useless nowadays.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. B 11. C

The southwestern United States has experienced drought for more than 20 years. Arizona has increasingly pumped (抽吸) water from underground, but that meets less than half of what the state needs. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of new residents arrive every year, and more communities are built. One report shows that a large area near Phoenix doesn’t have enough groundwater for all the homes that developers want to build there. That means 800,000 people.
Some experts say the solution is to import water from outside the state. One idea is to build a $5.5 billion desalination (脱盐) plant on Mexico’s Sea of Cortez. The plant would remove salt from the water and pump that water to Arizona through a 200-mile pipeline. Supporters say this could provide a water supply for decades.
Environmentalists see a different future. Some of the salt taken out of the Sea of Cortez might end up back in the ocean, harming wildlife. The pipeline would damage land where people and animals live. And the desalination process uses lots of energy. This would create greenhouse gases, the very gases that are causing the conditions that have led to Arizona’s water problems.
Margaret Wilder is a professor at the University of Arizona, in Tucson. She warns that big projects like this one could be used to show much more unsustainable development in the desert in the future. Moreover, desalinating water would likely be a massive expenditure for Arizonans. Cities pay about $50 to $150 for 326,000 gallons. That’s enough for a family of three in Phoenix for a year. Desalinated water could charge 20 times as much.
Environmentalists say the government should focus on cutting the demand for water rather than increasing the supply. That would mean taking water-saving measures and limiting how many homes are built. Thousands of households in Tucson, Arizona, are collecting rainwater and using it for cooking, drinking, and in their gardens. Government leaders have taken notice. Tucson also helps residents pay for equipment that collects rainwater for home use.
12. What is the problem faced by the southwestern United States?
A. A population increase. B. A serious heatwave.
C. A waste of resources. D. A water shortage.
13. What do environmentalists probably think of the desalination project?
A. It provides a long-term solution to drought.
B. It would harm the planet from various aspects.
C. It fails to take people’s basic needs into account.
D. It draws people’s attention to environmental destruction.
14. What does the underlined part “a massive expenditure” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Affordable. B. Costly. C. Unsafe. D. Beneficial.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. People are unsatisfied with the government’s water measures.
B. Collecting rainwater is the key to meeting water demands.
C. People are exploring water resources with official support.
D. Public concern about water safety has increased.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. B 15. C

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was just another busy day until I met the boy on the bus. He was not a passenger like me. He was, what we call a street child, an 8-10-year-old kid with a worn T-shirt. These poorly dressed kids were seen almost everywhere in Dhaka city. But what was special about that boy was his face. There was “something” in him that caught my attention. That was an angelic(天使般的)baby face with little care.
He got straight into the bus as it stopped at a traffic light. The bus helper shouted at him in the first place. But instead of talking back, the boy kept silent and started handing out a piece of paper to all the passengers. What was written in the paper was, in short, that his father died a couple of years ago. His mother worked at houses. He badly needed money to help his family, so he wished someone warm-hearted to buy chocolates from him.
This was nothing new to people who took a bus every day and I was no different. I had my earphones on, listening to some relaxing music to kill time. When he came to me to get the paper back, I casually gave him some money. Thankfully it brought some smiles on his face. He was about to give me ten chocolates in return for the money I gave to him when I stopped him.
“I don’t like chocolates, brother. So there is no need of chocolates. You can have the money,” I said.
All of a sudden, the smile on his face disappeared.
“I’m not a beggar. Please take the chocolate, or take your money back.”
His straight answer greatly surprised me. I even felt he was slightly angry. I had given money to many kids before, without taking their chocolates. But this time something seemed different. I realized his angelic baby face was not the only thing special about him.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Having got the boy’s name, I decided to help him.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 The boy put ten chocolates on my seat and got off the bus. Seeing his small figure disappear in the busy street, I felt at a loss. “I know the boy.” A voice flew through the frozen air and drew me back to life. Then a man told all of us that the boy was a top student in a primary school nearby, whose mother fell ill due to the heavy work. In order to raise some money for his mother, the boy had been selling chocolates for several weeks.
Having got the boy’s name, I decided to help him. I got off the bus at the next stop and took a taxi to his school. Upon arrival, I managed to find the headmaster and handed him $1000, asking him to secretly give the money to the boy who I met selling chocolates on the bus. The headmaster promised to make everything perfect and thanked me on behalf of the boy and his mother. Now, I knew I could go home without shame and regret.

第二节(满分25分)
