Cartoons are like a window that lets us see the culture of a country. For example, the popular Japanese cartoon Naruto shows us life about ninjas (忍者). American cartoons like Superman open up the world to superman culture. In Chinese cartoons we can see Chinese culture, like ink painting and paper cutting.
If you talk to your parents about their favourite cartoons, you’ll find their choices are quite different from yours. Early cartoons were short and they were usually made by hand. They were arts of paper cutting, oil painting or puppets (油画或木偶). Today’s cartoons are made with computers and AI. They have more exciting sound and pictures.
What has happened to cartoons over the past years in China? After 1949, China started to make cartoons with its own character. Little Tadpole Looking for Mum (1961) was China’s first ink-painting cartoon, together with puppet cartoon such as The Magic Brush (1955). After 1978, more foreign cartoons came to China. Our cartoons started to become better. In the past ten years, China’s cartoon movies have developed quickly. The great cartoon movies such as Monkey King: Hero Is Back, Big Fish & Begonia, Chang An, Boonie Bears movies, Ne Zha 1 and Ne Zha 2 came out one by one. Many Chinese cartoons won prizes at international movie festivals. We are so proud of them.
41 Why does the writer mention ninjas and superman in Paragraph 1?

Little Tadpole Looking for Mum (1961) was China’s first ink-painting cartoon, together with puppet cartoon such as The Magic Brush (1955). After 1978, more foreign cartoons came to China. Our cartoons started to become better. In the past ten years, China’s cartoon movies have developed quickly.
