I recently had a bad cold. My Chinese friends said I should drink some hot water and wear more clothes. This made me think of some common home remedies (常见的家庭疗法) back in the US.
When I was maybe 11 or 12, I got the flu. It was pretty terrible. I felt like I was burning up and freezing at the same time.
But my mom didn’t take me to the doctor. First, she had me take many hot showers. Then, she told me to put on as many clothes as I could. After that, I slept under a thick blanket (厚毛毯). I was sweating so much that I felt like I’d just taken a bath. But within a day, my flu was gone.
This kind of “sweating” is a common home remedy in the West. Other remedies include drinking ginger soda when you have a stomachache and eating chicken noodle soup when you have a cold.

Maybe you’ll meet a word that you don’t know in an exam. Most students may be nervous if a dictionary is not around them. But don’t worry! There are some ways to help you guess the meaning of a word without a dictionary.
Reread the whole sentence. Your first step is to go back and reread the whole sentence. You may forget what you are reading when you meet a new word. Then try to think about the content (内容) of the sentence.
Try guessing the meaning by the background. This will make it different from other parts and you’ll pick it from the rest of the sentence easily. You can often use other words in the sentence to help you find out the meaning of the unknown word.
Think about what else is happening in the sentence. For example, maybe you are looking at a sentence that says, “It was a very sultry day in the middle of the summer.” You may understand each word but “sultry”. Think about what you know about summer. Maybe “sultry” has something to do with the weather. It can help you understand the word easily.
In a word, don’t be afraid of new words. Try your best to understand them by using these ways. Then you can also understand the sentence or passage better.
9. What should you do first when you meet a new word?
A. Ask others for help. B. Reread the whole sentence.
C. Look it up in a dictionary. D. Guess its meaning through other words.
10. What does the underlined word “sultry” mean?
A. Very hot. B. Very cold. C. Warm. D. Cool.
11. What’s the text mainly about?
A. Discussing exam-faced problems. B. Advising not being afraid of dictionaries.
C. Teaching ways to guess new words. D. Showing the importance of understanding sentences.
12. How is the text organized? (①=Paragraph1, ②=Paragraph 2.)

“Volunteering makes you look at the world differently. You see how little things can change a person’s life for the better, which makes everyone a better person.” Mason, a volunteer said.
National Volunteer Week started in 1974 and is held every April. It is a time to thank volunteers for their achievements. It is also a perfect opportunity to encourage others to take their first step towards becoming a volunteer. Making the decision to take the first step can be the biggest problem, because they often wonder if they will be able to meet the organization’s expectations. Some people fear not knowing anyone else in the group. Not having enough time also prevents some from sharing their abilities.
The following tips can help if you have some of these worries.
★ Start out slowly, don’t add too much pressure. Even a few hours a month can make a big difference in someone’s life.
★ Choose an organization with the same interests and common values.
★ Take part in a training meeting for new volunteers, even if it is not asked.
★ Work with a veteran volunteer. He volunteered a lot, he can help you increase the confidence and completely understand the organization’s expectations.
★ Invite a friend or family member to serve. It is a good experience to volunteer with them.
★ Finally, it is most important to enjoy the volunteer experience and to remember that not all volunteer experiences are perfect. If one experience doesn’t work, don’t give up and you’ll surely find the right opportunity.
Spend some time on volunteer work and you will see great changes in people’s lives. As Mason discovered during his volunteer experience, “... little things can change a person’s life.”

Reread the whole sentence Your first step is to go back and reread the whole sentence.

When looking at old chopsticks, most people will see nothing but waste (垃圾). But Felix Bock is different. He can make boxes, tables and other useful things out of them.
In 2016, Felix Bock studied at the University of British Columbia, Canada. He found people threw away about 100,000 pairs of chopsticks every day in Vancouver alone. He decided to do something to stop waste. So he started the company Chop Value in the same year. The company collected used chopsticks from restaurants, schools and shopping centers in Canada and the US. And then the company turned them into furniture and artworks. Now the company has recycled (再利用) 32 million pairs of chopsticks.
Bock hopes the idea behind Chop Value will help people to think about what waste is. “I believe every small action can help,” he said. “And I am happy that my business offers people a new way.” Hundreds of restaurants across North America pay some money to Bock for the recycling of their used chopsticks. But Bock doesn’t stop there. Now he is busy taking his business to more countries to set up factories for recycling local wood like chopsticks.
