(2025·江苏省苏州市高三期中)Cecily Eklund has always adored her baby dolls. When she was six, she needed them more than ever: She had to go through braincancer surgery and MRI scans, but she was told she couldn't take her favourite dolls with her into the magnetic (磁性的) machine because they had metal in them.
So Cecily and her mom, Cathy—a homeschooler of seven kids and a professional doll maker in Westlock—got creative. Together, they made a special doll, using weighted glass and other MRIsafe materials, that could stay with Cecily during the long imaging appointments. Besides the materials it was made with, the doll was unique in that it had no facial features.
9
“That's so they can have any emotion,” says Cecily, who was inspired to create these dolls, called “Blessing Babies”, for other sick kids. She and her mom began creating more, donating some to children's hospitals and selling others to fundraise. Due to high demand, they invited other doll makers to work alongside them. Soon, doll makers worldwide also began contributing, sending boxes of their handmade dolls to support the cause.
Cecily's initiatives grew. She began selling handmade furry puppies and inspirational clothing patches, in addition to running toy drives and fundraisers for various charities. Including monetary and gift donations, Cecily has raised more than $200,000 so far.
10
Cecily's generosity caught the attention of another wellknown Edmontonian, the Oilers' power forward Evander Kane, who met her in the press box at a game, when he was recovering from an injured wrist. Kane gave her a shirt with his name on it, and in exchange she gave him a patch that read “ Scars are tattoos (文身) with better stories.”
Today Cecily calls herself a braincancer survivor and “childhood cancer awareness fighter”, but she is still followed closely by her team at the children's hospital. When asked for advice on successful fundraising, she emphasizes the importance of generosity. “ You don't get poor by giving,” Cecily says. “ Because you always get something back, one way or another. ”

(2025·湖北省重点高中智学联盟高三联考)In 2021, at 64 years old, Marlene Flowers entered her first bodybuilding competition. Oiled, and wearing a bikini, she found herself under bright lights on stage, twisting to show off her muscles alongside people half her age.
Flowers had a natural talent for freestyle swimming as a child, but struggled with her body image. Selfconscious and often shy, Flowers went on to marry and divorce twice. “It all affected my selfesteem and I ended up with an eating disorder for many years,” she says. “It was getting worse and worse until I was hospitalized for issues relating to my weight loss at 58. That was my wakeup call.”
17
Once she had built up some strength and was discharged, the youngest of her two sons, Ryan, encouraged Flowers to start taking care of her body through exercise and to see food as a way of keeping fit. He directed her towards home workout videos and after noticing that the instructor on one of the DVDs was older than her, she decided to give it a try.
18
After five years of home routines, and slowly building her confidence by working out with Ryan every day in his local gym, Flowers started to gain muscle mass. “I wanted to push myself,” she says. “I felt stronger and other people would come up and say that they wished they could have guns like mine!” The compliments sparked an idea. Ryan decided to film some of their sessions and upload them to TikTok and Instagram. After a video of Flowers twisting those guns went viral, her growing online following flooded her accounts with positive comments.
19
She decided to enter a bodybuilding contest as a target after she became an Internet celebrity. Now 67, Flowers has won four more bodybuilding medals, with more than 1 million Instagram and TikTok followers and has gained sponsorship from clothing brand Young LA, making her the oldest sponsored female athlete in the US. She still works out every day, starting with a 10minute ab routine and 130 pushups at home before heading to the gym for a twohour session with Ryan, who has since left his job in business development to train his mother fulltime.
