What is a GPA?
A GPA, or Grade Point Average, typically ranging from one to four, is a number reflecting your course performance on average. It's used by universities to determine whether students meet academic standards and by students to enhance job prospects or secure admission into postgraduate programs.
2
How to calculate a GPA?
•Determine the letter grade and the number of credit hours for each course you take in a term;
•Translate the letter grade to grade points using your school's grading system;
•Multiply the grade points by the credit hours for that course;
•Add up all the credit hours for the courses;
•Divide the total number of grade points by the total credit hours and you get the GPA.
3
Example: Academic Transcript of Jane Smith
Winter 2023.
Courses Letter Grade Grade points Credit hours Total points GPA
Creative Writing A+ 4.0 3 12 —
Psychology A- 3.7 3 11.1 —
History B+ 3.3 3 9.9 —
Computer Science F 0.0 2 0 —

What are the consequences of failing college courses?
•Every failing grade (F) significantly impacts your GPA for that academic year, limiting clubs, organizations and program choices, as competitive programs require top GPAs.
•Most financial aid programs require a specific GPA. A sharp drop in GPA due to several course failures may lead to withdrawal from financial aid programs, unless you retake the courses and pass.
5
•For college athletes on sports scholarships, failing courses repeatedly can lead to losing scholarships and team sports.
•Failing multiple courses can result in school removal and affect future applications.

(2025·江苏省盐城中学高三月考)Recycling is beneficial for the environment. It can also benefit a community in surprising ways. Mateo Lange, 15, knows this well. On weekends, he can be found sorting through glass and plastic bottles and aluminum cans in his hometown of Indian River, Michigan, where he leads a community recycling program.
Mateo launched the program in 2020 when he was just 11 and in the sixth grade, playing baseball with the Northern Michigan Cyclones, a new team that needed funds for traveling to tournaments. Mateo came up with a plan to deal with this need.
10
“There were cans and bottles always thrown around the road,” he recalled. In Michigan, these can be collected and exchanged for cash. With his dad's help, Mateo started a bottle and can drive. It raised $7,500. “We collected so much money in just a few weeks,” he says. “So I thought, why not keep this going as long as we can?”
Since then, Mateo says, his recycling effort has raised $350,000 and helped at least 50 local youth groups. It has also prevented more than 2 million bottles and cans from littering the roadside and polluting Michigan's lakes and rivers.
11
In 2023, Mateo was awarded a Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes. “It feels humbling,” Mateo says, when asked about all he's accomplished with his clean up effort. “I am happy knowing that all these teams and clubs and kids around the community are benefiting.”
Mateo believes everyone can—and should—be of service. “Just do a little bit to help make the world a little bit of a better place,” he says. “Be creative,” he adds. “Have an idea and build on it.”

A.It created jobs for local residents.
B.It helped build new recreational facilities.

(2025·江苏省扬州市江都区丁沟中学高三期中)One day I was unwrapping a birthday gift from my teenage son—a blouse more stylish than I felt comfortable wearing. My first thought when I opened the tissue paper and saw the blouse was that it was another candidate to hang in the back of my closet. I felt like the most important person didn't care enough about me to think about my likes and dislikes.
“What do you think, Mom?” Jason asked, hardly waiting for me to pull the blouse out of the box. “I thought it would look so nice on you.” He smiled at me with anticipation.
17
At that moment, I realized Jason saw me as someone who would be open to receiving and wearing something more elegant than my usual clothes. He wanted to give me something special. It was a flash of sudden recognition. Then everything changed.
“It's beautiful,” I was able to say genuinely as I hugged him.
“Try it on. I want to see how it looks,” Jason added.
“I know just the skirt to try it with,” I said as I headed towards my closet.
When I returned with the outfit on, Jason was waiting. “It looks just like I thought it would. It's pretty on you, Mom,” Jason said.
18
I tried to stop the tears that were welling in the corner of my eyes. “Thank you, honey. It is a beautiful blouse. I can tell you put a lot of thought into picking it out.”
Jason probably wondered why I was so emotional over the gift. It made me think back on the gifts I'd ignored. Maybe the people who gave me the gifts saw something in me that I didn't see in myself. That opened me up to change and growth.
In the years since, I received my son's present. I have rarely felt disappointed when a gift doesn't match my interests or desires. I've started appreciating the thoughts and efforts behind every gift and accepted it with gratitude. This change has made holidays more joyful and deepened my appreciation for family and friends.
19
There is surely something special about receiving a gift that is perfectly suited for you. But I have found that it is just as special to receive all gifts with an open mind and a grateful heart.

(2025·福建省厦门市湖滨中学高三期中)Ava, a fifthgrader, longed for a cell phone like her peers but had to wait until she was thirteen. To persuade her parents, she penned an essay, demonstrating she was mature enough for a cell phone. Her parents, impressed, gave her an old phone.
29
“Ava,” her dad said seriously, “a cell phone isn't just for fun and games. It's a significant responsibility. You must keep your phone secure. You must silence it in public spaces. You must ...” He listed all of the ways that she had to be responsible with her phone. But Ava, too busy with choosing the perfect wallpaper, downloading apps, and chatting with her best friend Sarah, only halflistened.
Over the weekend, Sarah's mom took the girls to a movie. Normally Ava avoided horror films, but Sarah's pleading words with funny memes (表情包) had somehow convinced Ava that the movie might actually be enjoyable. Before the movie started, Sarah's mom instructed the girls to silence their phones out of respect for others. As the movie's tension built, Ava found herself growing increasingly uncomfortable. “I need to go to the bathroom,” Ava whispered to Sarah.
30
After the movie, while waiting for Sarah's mom to fetch the car, Ava felt a sinking feeling. “I can't find my phone!” she shrieked, patting down all of her pockets. Panicstricken, Ava searched her bag, yet her phone seemed to have vanished. Ava got into the car, her stomach in knots.
“Are you going to tell your parents?” Sarah whispered to Ava on their ride back. Ava was silent, her mind racing with the consequences. She could envision her parents' disappointed faces and harsh words. She feared that this incident might lead to her parents taking away the privilege of having a phone altogether.
31
As they arrived, Ava climbed out of the car and trudged home, her heart heavy with what had happened.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

[精彩范文]
The moment Ava walked in, her parents greeted her with a smile. She knew she had to tell them about the lost phone, but words stuck in her throat. Recalling the trust they had put in her with the phone, Ava felt a pang of distress as she prepared to confess. “I ... I've lost my phone,” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. Her father's brow furrowed. “Did it perhaps fall from your pocket during the movie? Or could it have ...?” Her mother inquired anxiously. When Ava admitted that, in her panic, she had forgotten to go back and search properly or ask for help, her parents exchanged a silent glance. “Accidents happen,” her father assured her. “We'll figure this out together.”
35
Then her parents drove Ava back to the cinema. They went to the reception desk and asked the cinema staff for help. It turned out that someone had turned the phone in to the front desk. They took the phone back. With a voice choked by emotion, Ava apologized to her father, “I know I messed up, Dad.” Placing a hand on her shoulder, her father told Ava that maturity wasn't just about having a phone or not, but about how she handled situations, especially when they went wrong. “It comes along with a sense of responsibility. Remember to be responsible for your phone!” her mother added, putting the phone back into Ava's hand. As she held the device, she felt the familiar weight, a weight more significant than before.
