At 70, Mr. Henry Thompson had spent his entire life in a small town, working as a mechanic. His days were filled with the sounds of engines and the smell of motor oil. But deep inside, he had a long-buried passion for art.
One day, while cleaning out the attic (阁楼), he found an old paintbrush and a half-used box of watercolors. Staring at them, memories of his childhood love for drawing came flooding back. Without hesitation, he decided to take up painting.
At first, his attempts were clumsy. The lines were uneven, and the colors seemed to fight each other on the canvas. But Mr. Thompson didn’t give up. He spent hours in his small backyard studio, painting the scenery around him: the old oak tree, the flowerbed, and the small pond.
As time passed, his skills improved. He started to experiment with different techniques, reading art books he borrowed from the library. His family and friends were amazed at his progress. They encouraged him to participate in the local art exhibition.
To his surprise, one of his paintings was chosen for display. Standing in front of his work in the exhibition hall, Mr. Thompson felt a sense of pride he had never experienced before. It wasn’t about winning awards; it was about finally realizing a dream he had held for so long.
From then on, Mr. Thompson continued to paint. His art not only brought joy to his own life but also inspired others in the town. Young and old, people started to pick up brushes, influenced by Mr. Thompson’s story of following one’s passion at any age.

It’s often thought that there’s one universal sign language (SL), or that people who speak different types of sign languages can understand each other. But if you were to put a speaker of, say, British Sign Language in a room with a speaker of Japanese Sign Language, they wouldn’t be much better at communicating than if they were speaking English and Japanese!
There are over 300 different types of sign languages. It’s not only the signs that are different among these languages, but also things like facial expressions and sentence structure. Like other languages, sign languages have developed according to the culture and history of the places where they’re used.
We know of sign languages used by deaf people as early as the fourth century. But the formalization of modern sign languages is believed to have begun in the 18th century, with a French person named Charles-Michel de l’Épée. In 1755, de l’Epée opened the National Institute for Deaf-Mutes in Paris, the world’s first free public school for deaf children. Deaf students from around France attended the school, bringing with them the signs they used to communicate at home. De l’Épée documented and systematized the existing signs by developing a signing dictionary.
This standardized sign language quickly spread across Europe and to the US. In America, a man named Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet learned de l’Epée’ s sign language so he could communicate with his neighbor, who had hearing difficulties. Gallaudet, inspired by the challenges his neighbor faced due to her inability to hear and speak, was determined to find a way to bridge the communication gap. He went on to establish the American School for the Deaf, where, like in France, students from around the US brought their own signs — eventually leading to the development of American Sign Language.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, in Japan, for example, a standardized sign language developed locally after the establishment of the first school for the deaf in Kyoto in 1878. This sign language has some similarities to the sign language used in Korea.
8. What can we say about sign languages from the first two paragraphs?
A They vary globally. B. They are easy to master.
C. They have a single origin. D. They la ck cultural influence.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Early usage patterns of SL. B. A Frenchman’s contribution to SL.
C. Deaf students’ daily life in France. D. Educational reforms in the 18th century.
10. Why did Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet learn de l’Epée’s sign language?
A. To spread SL across the US. B. To talk to a neighbor with hearing problems.
C. To develop American SL. D. To teach at a US school.
11. What can be concluded about the formalization of sign languages?
A. I t was a sudden process. B. It occurred only in the West.
C. It was influenced by education. D. It was led by deaf communities.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. B 11. C

Most of us use multiple passwords for our digital lives. It’s common to have a bunch of them and they keep growing. Some, like work passwords, need to be changed frequently, making them tough to remember.
This can push us to reuse passwords, but experts say that’s risky. Hackers (黑客) could take over your accounts if you do so. A popular solution is to use password managers. These tools aren’t new, but they might be just what you need. Let’s explore how password managers can help you.
Password managers are like digital safes for your passwords. They securely store all your login details, and when you need to access a site, they fill in your document for you automatically. These tools often come as apps for your phone, which work with browsers and other apps. You can unlock them with a touch of your fingerprint or a glance at the camera. On your computer, you can access your password storage through a browser extension or a special website.
Good password managers not only store your passwords but also generate strong ones for you, using a mix of letters, numbers and symbols. It’s smart enough to recognize new logins and ask if you want to save them. They also protect you from phishing (网络诱骗) attempts, which try to trick you into fake websites by copying emails or links. If a site’s address doesn’t match the one saved in your storage, your password manager won’t fill in your details.
Good password managers use strong encryption (加密) methods that aim to prevent any other parties from seeing your data. Pieter Arntz is a security researcher at California-based cybersecurity company Malwarebytes. He said that many password managers use the most secure kind of encryption available.
Arntz noted this kind of encryption can protect users even when their computers, devices or password managers are hacked. This is because encryption ensures the saved passwords are stored in an encoded state, which means the attacker would need to know the main password in order to read any of the saved passwords.
12. Why do experts advise against reusing passwords?
A. It makes the login process more complex.
B. It makes your accounts less convenient.
C. It makes you more addicted to your digital devices.
D. It makes your accounts easier to be hacked.
13. How do password managers assist users with online security?
A. By providing a platform for password sharing.
B. By encoding data to prevent insecure access.
C. By monitoring online activity for suspicious behavior.
D. By allowing users to create simple-to-remember passwords.
14. What can be inferred about password managers from the article?
A. They change the passwords for the users.
B. They are completely immune to all hacking threats.
C. They can only be accessed through a special website.
D. Their security relies on the user remembering the primary password.
15. What could be the most suitable title for the passage?
A. Password Management: A New Tool for Cybersecurity
B. Hacking Solution: Ways to Create a Safe Password
C. Unlocking Security: The Power of Password Managers
D. Exploring Digital Safety: The Future of Online Security
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. D 15. C

Poor little Maggie was left alone after her mother died. What’s worse no one would like to take her home. Two years before, a fall from a window had injured her spine, and she had not been able to leave her bed since.
“Take her to the orphanage(孤儿院),” said a neighbour. Joe Thompson, farmer who happened to pass by, paused and said to him, “It’s a cruel thing to send her there.” “Oh, Sir,” Maggie cried out, “don’t leave me here all alone!”
Though not good-looking in appearance. Joe Thompson had a soft heart. He liked children. “No, dear,” he answered, “you shall not be left alone.” Lifting her in his strong arms, he took her across the field to his home.
“Who is she?” sharply questioned Mrs. Thompson upon his return home. “Wait a moment for explanations, and be gentle,” Joe said equally sharply back. He carried Maggie to a small room on the first floor, and laid her on a bed. Then, stepping back, he shut the door, and stood face to face with his angry wife.
“I can’t believe it that you’ve brought home a sick child!” Her face was in a flame. “I think women’s hearts are sometimes very hard,” said Joe. His sudden outbreak had impressed his wife and he added quickly, “This poor motherless little one needs a family. Let’s keep her here.”
The voice of the strong, rough man shook, and he turned his head away, so that the tears in his eyes could not be seen. Mrs. Thompson did not answer, but a soft feeling crept into her heart. “Look at her kindly, Jane, and speak to her kindly,” said Joe, “Think of her dead mother, and the loneliness, the pain, the sorrow that must be on all her coming life.” Mrs. Thompson did not reply, but turned towards the little room where her husband had put Maggie: and, pushing open the door, went quietly in. Joe did not follow; he felt that it would be best to leave her alone with the child.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
But he could not help looking in through the little room window.

【答案】
But he could not help looking in through the window. Maggie’s eyes were fixed on his wife. But he saw nothing of her usual coldness, or rudeness. She asked the poor child whether she needed bread and an egg. The poor child nodded heavily and almost cried with her eyes full of tears. Mrs. Thompson gently put her hands on the child’s head, knelt down and gave her a hug.
Out came Mrs. Thompson who seemed to have made a decision. She stared at Joe Thompson gruffly but walked directly towards the kitchen. The little girl ate with great pleasure and gave the woman a look of thankfulness which awoke her softest feelings down in her heart which had been hidden in one corner. “I don’t mind keeping her one year or two” said Mrs. Thompson. Thompson smiled while holding out his arms towards her. In fact since then, the house had been full sunshine of love.

A. They vary globally.

A By providing a platform for password sharing.

47. 阅读下列短文,并根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Poor little Maggie was left alone after her mother died. What’s worse, no one would like to take her home.
