Here are four of them to feed your imagination. A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson How did it all begin? And how did we get here? The book offers a comprehensive yet entertaining answer to these questions. Bill Bryson takes the reader on an impressive journey through the greatest scientific discoveries in history. It explains scientific topics in a vivid way, but it’s quite a long read. Thing Explainer by Randall Munroe How do helicopters work? Or cells? Randall Munroe explains how things work using illustrations and only the most common 1, 000 words in English. It will shift your approach to explanation. So, next time explain how something works rather than merely call it by its name. However, additionally providing more technical terms might have improved the understanding and learning experience. Ask an Astronaut by Tim Peake What does it feel like to fly into space? How do you prepare for it? Astronaut Tim Peake Answers all the questions you never knew about going into space. The book gives insights into the outing-edge science, as well as the day-to-day life on board of the International Space Station Its question and answer format makes it easy to quickly find answers, but it can become less appealing due to the lack of descriptive language. Deep Time by Riley Black Want to know the story of our planet? Riley Black takes us on a journey, in the order of time, through the geological (地质的) events that have shaped our planet. The fascinating high-quality images are supported by easily digestible explanations of key historical moments. It also expands on key concepts in geology, astronomy and biology. Yet, measuring the size of some objects on the photos is difficult due to the lack of a scale bar(比例尺). 21. What do A Short History of Nearly Everything and Deep Time have in common? A. They combine science and history. B. They feature vivid images. C. They introduce astronauts’ daily life. D. They entertain readers of all ages. 22. What’s a shortcoming of Thing Explainer? A. It is rather too long. B. It is written in plain language. C. It lacks technical terms. D. It fails to include clear images. 23. Which book is organized in the format of question and answer? A. A Short History of Nearty Everything. B. Thing Explainer. C. Ask an Astronaut. D. Deep Pine. A 22. C 23. A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson部分中“Bill Bryson takes the reader on an impressive journey through the greatest scientific discoveries in history.(比尔·布莱森带领读者踏上了一段令人印象深刻的旅程,穿越了历史上最伟大的科学发现历程)”以及Deep Time by Riley Black部分中“Riley Black takes us on a journey, in the order of time, through the geological (地质的) events that have shaped our planet.(莱利·布莱克带领我们按照时间顺序,穿越那些塑造了我们星球的地质事件,展开了一场旅程)”可知, 故选A。 根据 Thing Explainer by Randall Munroe部分中“Randall Munroe explains how things work using illustrations and only the most common 1, 000 words in English.(兰道尔·门罗仅使用英文中最常见的1000个单词,并借助插图来解释事物是如何运作的)”以及“However, additionally providing more technical terms might have improved the understanding and learning experience.(然而,如果再额外提供一些专业术语的话,可能会增进理解并提升学习体验)”可知,Thing Explainer只用最常见的1000个英语单词来解释事物如何运作,且额外提供更多技术术语可能会提高理解和学习体验,说明这本书的缺点是缺少技术术语。 Ask an Astronaut by Tim Peake部分中“Astronaut Tim Peake Answers all the questions you never knew about going into space. The book gives insights into the outing-edge science, as well as the day-to-day life on board of the International Space Station Its question and answer format makes it easy to quickly find answers, but it can become less appealing due to the lack of descriptive language.(宇航员蒂姆·皮克回答了所有你之前关于进入太空一无所知的问题。这本书不仅深入剖析了前沿科学知识,还展示了国际空间站上的日常生活。其问答形式让读者能够迅速找到答案,但由于缺乏生动的描述性语言,可能会显得稍欠吸引力)”可知,Ask an Astronaut以问答的形式呈现,容易快速找到答案。故选C。 B Peter Kline has run over 100 marathons. But what makes him so remarkable is that he has finished 45 of those marathons while pushing young people with disabilities in front of him. Kline wants them to know the joy of running, too. Kline started hitting the road when he was in his early fifties after running a 10K and then he began running marathons. His friend Scott Patrick suffered from a brain cancer, and asked Kine to run to raise money for cancer research. Kline helped Patrick and other volunteers raise about $60,000. Being able to help others through his beloved sport made an impression. Kline knew of a father and a son who would run races together—the father pushing his son with disabilities as he completed the course. But, he wondered, “What about kids who don’t have a dad to do that?” After being connected to a woman with two daughters who have cerebral palsy(脑瘫), he decided to run the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon in 2012 with one of the girls. The little girl loved it, and KJine said his mission to share his love of the sports just started rolling. He has been calling the mission “Marathons with Meaning”. Kline has a business card that says “Marathons with Meaning” and wherever he sees young people with disabilities, he just goes up to the parents and says, “If your kid ever wants to run a marathon, let me know.” Kline said he paid for everything having to do with the race himself out of his own pocket. “It feels better that way of giving back to society.” The young people he pushes have ranged in ages from 8 to 32 and have many types of disabilities. “They love it,” Kline said. “They absolutely love the sounds, the noises, the feelings. The other runners are always very kind. They give them high-fives.” 24. What causes people to notice Peter Kline? A. He is a disabled marathon runner. B. He has run more than 100 marathons. C. He has helped disabled kids to run marathons. D. He has accompanied a father and his child to finish a course. 25. How did Kline help others through running for the first time? A. By sharing his love of sports with others. B. By helping raise money for cancer research. C. By advocating his project “Marathons with Meaning”. D. By assisting a child without father to run in a marathon. 26. What do we know about “Marathons with Meaning”? A. It is funded by people interested in marathon. B. Kline promotes it every time he has a chance. C. It only welcomes disabled children to participate. D. Kline wishes people to contribute to society through it. 27. Which of the following can best describe Peter Kine? A. Generous and caring. B. Honest an responsible. C. Diligent and hopeful. D. Energetic and knowledgeable. C 25. B 26. B 27. 根据第三自然段第一句“Being able to help others through his beloved sport made an impression.(能够通过他喜爱的运动帮助他人给人留下了深刻印象。)” 根据第二自然段“Kline started hitting the road when he was in his early fifties after running a 10K and then he began running marathons. His friend Scott Patrick suffered from a brain cancer, and asked Kine to run to raise money for cancer research.(Kline在50岁出头跑完10公里后开始上路,然后开始跑马拉松。他的朋友Scott Patrick患有脑癌,并要求Kline跑步为癌症研究筹集资金。)”可知,他第一次跑步帮助他人是通过帮助为癌症研究筹集资金。故选B。 【26题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Kline has a business card that says “Marathons with Meaning” and wherever he sees young people with disabilities, he just goes up to the parents and says, “If your kid ever wants to run a marathon, let me know.”( Kline有一张名片,上面写着“有意义的马拉松”,无论他在哪里看到残疾年轻人,他都会走到父母面前说,“如果你的孩子想跑马拉松,请告诉我。”)” 根据文章最后一段“Kline said he paid for everything having to do with the race himself out of his own pocket.(Kline说,与比赛有关的一切费用都是他自己掏出来的。)” A。 C Go to any movie theater or sports venue, and it’s obvious there’s an invisible bond that forms from laughing, crying, and simply feeling while brushing shoulders with others. Researches have long backed up this sense of connection, but some aspects of the phenomenon remained unclear. Now, a new study is offering insight. Writing in the journal Royal Society Open Science, Victor Chung of the École Normale Supérieure in France and his team reported how they examined the matter by inviting strangers to watch videos together in same sex pairs. Pairs of strangers watched three types of videos together: positive, negative, and neutral (中性的) with a curtain between them that was either open or closed. At the start of the experiment the researchers asked each participant whether they’d like to meet the other member of their pair again. After watching each video, participants reported their emotions and feelings of connectedness, and after seeing all three videos they were asked once again about their feelings towards the other participant. The results showed the emotional films generated stronger responses than the neutral film. Crucially, the team said participants’ feelings of connectedness within the pairs was boosted when they experienced more intense emotions. However, this was only the case when participants watched the films with the curtain between them open. The researchers said that whether or not the pairs could see each other had no impact on how positively or negatively they felt about the films. “We found that silently watching emotional films together with another individual is associated with social bonding, even when this person is a stranger and without any verbal (口头的) communication,” said Chung, the study author. The team added that the findings may help explain why people seek out group activities that generate strong emotions, “even participating in sad memorials that cause negative emotions.” In other words, because emotion bonds us, and humans have a fundamental desire to belong, we’re up for experiences one might think we’d naturally want to avoid. 28. What does “the phenomenon” in paragraph 1 refer to? A. Shared emotions bond people. B. Physical touch helps tackle stress. C. A chance encounter leads to a friendship. D. Entertainment is a crucial part of human life. 29. How did the researchers get their findings? A. By analyzing participants’ emotions. B. By comparing participants’ self-reports. C. By documenting participants’ video responses. D. By stimulating participants’ desire for interaction. 30. The study found that strong bonds were indeed created between pairs only when ______. A. they were familiar with each other B. they watched neutral films together C. they were aware of the presence of each other D. they could see each other while watching the films 31. What is presented in the last paragraph of the text? A. An interpretation of the findings. B. Potential implication of the findings. C. Supporting evidence for the findings. D. The underlying logic behind the findings. A 29. B 30. D 31. 根据文章第一段中“Go to any movie theater or sports venue, and it’s obvious there’s an invisible bond that forms from laughing, crying, and simply feeling while brushing shoulders with others.(去任何电影院或体育场馆,很明显,通过与他人一起笑、哭和感受,会形成一种无形的联系。)” 故选A。 根据文章第三段中“After watching each video, participants reported their emotions and feelings of connectedness, and after seeing all three videos they were asked once again about their feelings towards the other participant.(观看每个视频后,参与者报告了他们的情绪和联系感,看完所有三个视频后,他们再次被问及对另一位参与者的感受。)” 根据文章第四段中“Crucially, the team said participants’ feelings of connectedness within the pairs was boosted when they experienced more intense emotions. However, this was only the case when participants watched the films with the curtain between them open.(关键的是,研究团队表示,当参与者经历更强烈的情感时,他们之间的联系感会增强。然而,这种情况仅发生在参与者拉开窗帘观看电影时。)”可知,他们在看电影时可以互相看到对方。故选D。 【31题详解】 主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段中“The team added that the findings may help explain why people seek out group activities that generate strong emotions, ‘even participating in sad memorials that cause negative emotions.’(研究团队补充说,这些发现可能有助于解释为什么人们会寻求产生强烈情感的群体活动,“甚至参加引发负面情绪的悲伤纪念活动”。)” D Emergency Mask Pod (面罩舱) is a plastic, 3D-printed and football-shaped case that contains a mask that protects the lungs of someone trapped in a fire until they were rescued. Alexis got the idea for the Emergency Mask Pod after hearing that a mother had thrown her baby out of the second floor window of their smoke-filled apartment during a fire in the building. The family was trapped in their apartment by the smoke. Alexis wondered whether there was a means for people waiting outside, such as neighbors and first responders, to deliver smoke masks to people trapped in the second floors of burning buildings. Her research showed that there was no such delivery system, so Alexis set about to invent one. First, she found a small, lightweight smoke mask. The next step was to develop a way to launch or throw the mask up into an open second-story window. Alexis built several different pods, which were tested by local firefighters. Each pod was cast into a second story window more than 290 times by a total of 37 firefighters. The football-shaped pod, which Alexis printed on her MakerBot 3D printer, was the clear winner, with an accuracy rate of over 70 percent. The firefighters testing the Emergency Mask Pod told her that it is needed by firefighters arriving at the scene of a fire. They told Alexis that when they find people trapped inside, they wish they could give them some form of relief so they can breathe safely while firefighters try to reach them. A smoke delivery system could be used to provide that relief. The Emergency Mask Pod requires no special equipment, training, or permits; people at the scene of a fire could help fire victims (受害者) trapped inside smoky rooms without hesitation. EMTs, police officers, and firefighters could keep the mask and EM Pod in their vehicles and apartment complexes could store them in approachable places like community centers. The mask could easily be retrieved by victims and put on, giving them precious time for firefighters to rescue them and potentially saving hundreds or thousands of lives. 32. Why is the Emergency Mask Pod invented? A. To improve the design of smoke masks. B. To provide a way to deliver smoke masks. C. To help firefighters practice throwing skills. D. To protect first responders’ eyes from smoke. 33. How did Alexis test the effectiveness of different pods? A. By burning them in the local fire departments. B. By studying different materials for making pods. C. By doing a survey of people trapped in a fire before. D. By having firefighters throw them into windows many times. 34. Which word is closest in meaning to “retrieved” in the last paragraph? A. Returned. B. Accessed. C. Relieved. D. Launched. 35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Surviving the Flame: New Rescue Skills B. Smoke and Masks: The Future of Fire Safety C. A Lifeline through the Smoke: The Mask Pod D. Breaking through Barriers: Firefighters’ Creations 【答案】32. B 33. D 34. B 35. 第二段提到“Alexis wondered whether there was a means for people waiting outside, such as neighbors and first responders, to deliver smoke masks to people trapped in the second floors of burning buildings. Her research showed that there was no such delivery system, so Alexis set about to invent one.”(亚历克西斯想知道,是否有办法让等待在外面的人,比如邻居和急救人员,给被困在燃烧建筑物二楼的人送去防烟口罩。 第三段第三、四句提到“Alexis built several different pods, which were tested by local firefighters. Each pod was cast into a second story window more than 290 times by a total of 37 firefighters.”(亚历克西斯建造了几个不同的吊舱,由当地消防员进行了测试。 根据文章最后一段“......by victims and put on, giving them precious time for firefighters to rescue them and potentially saving hundreds or thousands of lives.”(可以很容易地被受害者并戴上,为消防员拯救他们提供了宝贵的时间,并可能挽救数百或数千人的生命。) A. Returned.归还;B. Accessed. Relieved. Launched. 文章第一段通过一个让人痛心的事情引出亚克力西斯对于emergency mask pod的想法,包括如何更加有效地投放面罩,其中最后一段提出“The mask could easily be retrieved by victims and put on, giving them precious time for firefighters to rescue them and potentially saving hundreds or thousands of lives.”(这种面具可以很容易地被受害者收回并戴上,为消防员拯救他们提供了宝贵的时间,并可能挽救数百或数千人的生命。)可知,文章主要介绍了Emergency Mask Pod的发明及其在火灾中的重要作用,C项“A Lifeline through the Smoke: The Mask Pod”(穿越烟雾的生命线:面罩舱)符合文意。 People who are in the same age group are called peers. When they influence each other, or try to get other people in this age group to do something, it’s called peer pressure. It’s something everyone has to deal with — even adults. ____36____ Peers can have a positive influence on each other. Little did she know that she would run into something completely unusual the day. Just a mile into her walk, her eyes were drawn to a sight near the water’s edge. There lay a magnificent female mute swan. Rojas, who has experience working at the Wild Bird Fund rehab center in Manhattan, was well aware that mute swans could be quite aggressive. However, this particular swan was different. It remained still and made no move or attempt to attack as she drew closer. It was clear to her that there was something wrong with the swan and that it was in need of medical help. Rojas took immediate action. She slowly and tenderly covered the swan’s head with her jacket, hoping to keep it calm. Then, with utmost care, she picked the heavy bird up, holding it softly in her arms. The next challenge was discouraging. The rehab center was across the East River, on the other side of town. How could she carry such a huge swan out of here on her own? The thought alone almost made her desperate. Just when hope seemed to grow weaker, a man cycling by appeared at the end of the road and got nearer and nearer. There on the back seat of his bike was fixed a big-sized backpack. Rojas made two steps forward with efforts, “Help!” After several good glances at Rojas, the man stopped in front of her. With a concerned expression shifted from a confused one he asked “What’s wrong with the swan?” Rojas made a brief explanation as soon as she could, while the man listened attentively, his eyes fixed on the swan in her arms. 66. assist lie possible confuse explore approach expect attack gentle respond cycle curious Rojas, who worked at the Wild Bird Fund rehab center, started her______in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. 根据第一段中“Little did she know that this day would be filled with an extraordinary encounter. 根据第二段中“It remained still and made no move or attempt to attack as she drew closer. 故填approached/was approaching。 根据第二段中“It was clear to her that there was something wrong with the swan and that it was in need of medical help. 根据第三段中“Then, with utmost care, she picked the heavy bird up, holding it softly in her arms. 根据第三段中“How could she carry such a huge swan out of here on her own? The thought alone seemed almost impossible. 根据第四段“Just when hope seemed to grow weaker, a man cycling by appeared at the end of the road and got nearer and nearer.(就在希望似乎愈发渺茫之时,一个骑着自行车经过的人出现在了路的尽头,并且越走越近了)”可知,罗哈斯向刚刚路过的一位骑自行车的人求助,并向他详细说明了情况。 根据第四段中“After several good glances at Rojas, the cyclist stopped in front of her, his expression having shifted from confusion to concern, “What’s wrong with the swan?”(仔细看了Rojas几眼后,骑行者停在了她面前,他的表情从困惑变成了担心:“天鹅怎么了?”)” 根据第三段中“The next challenge was discouraging. The rehab center was across the East River, on the other side of town. How could she carry such a huge swan out of here on her own? She decided to send the mute swan to the rehab center for medical help, but it was too heavy for her to carry. 根据第四段中“Just when hope seemed to grow weak, a cyclist appeared at the end of the road and got nearer and nearer. There on the back seat of his bike was fixed a big-sized backpack. He would give his bike/backpack to Rojas for her to transport the swan. /He would accompany Rojas to the rehab center with his bike carrying the mute swan. 根据第四段中“Rojas made a brief explanation as soon as she could, while the cyclist listened attentively, his eyes fixed on the swan in her arms. Rojas would set the mute swan free after it got medical treatment in time and came back to life soon. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】As a tennis fan, I’d like to introduce my role model, Zheng Qinwen, a rising star in the tennis world. C Go to any movie theater or sports venue, and it’s obvious there’s an invisible bond that forms from laughing, crying, and simply feeling while brushing shoulders with others. D Emergency Mask Pod (面罩舱) is a plastic, 3D-printed and football-shaped case that contains a mask that protects the lungs of someone trapped in a fire until they were rescued. When they influence each other, or try to get other people in this age group to do something, it’s called peer pressure. It’s something everyone has to deal with — even adults. ____36____ Peers can have a positive influence on each other. For example, if you are involved with a group of people that are ambitious and are working to succeed, you might feel pressured to follow suit to avoid feeling excluded (被排除) from the group. ____37____ ____38____ Many young people spend large amounts of time in fixed groups regardless of their opinion of those groups. They may together experiment with things like cigarettes, alcohol or drugs because they lack the maturity to handle pressure from “friends”. Even if you’re faced with negative peer pressure while you’re alone, you should stand firm, though it is tough to be the only one who says “no” to negative peer pressure. ____40____ Inner strength and self-confidence can be a help in this situation. And paying attention to your own beliefs about what is right and wrong can help you know the right thing to do. A. You can get help from yourself. B. How does peer pressure affect us? C.
