Last summer, I went on a trip back to my hometown, a place that had long been calling me back with its rich history and traditions.
Upon arrival, I made a beeline for the ancient town square. In the heart of it stood the splendid town hall which was built in the 16th century and had lasted through the years. Centuries have left their mark on the structure’s stone walls. As I entered, the dimly lit inside was filled with pictures of former mayors and local famous persons. Their serious looks seemed to tell stories about the town’s past, making me feel an instant connection to those who had shaped the community.
The yearly harvest festival was approaching, and the town was full of activity. I eagerly joined my old friends and neighbors in preparing for it. We decorated the streets with colorful streamers and carefully arranged the rich produce from local farms. The festival was an energetic celebration. On the day, the streets were alive with people in traditional clothes. There were stands offering handmade things. The smell of local foods, like delicious apple pies made from local apples, filled the air. Folk dances and music performances added to the festive atmosphere. I was soon pulled into the dancing, my first awkwardness giving way to pure enjoyment.
Another highlight was the old mill (磨坊) on the outskirts. Operating for over 200 years, it had been crucial for grinding grains to feed the community. The miller, a kind-faced elderly man, showed me around, explaining the inner workings of the water-powered machinery. His stories about how the mill had sustained the town during difficult times painted a vivid picture of its importance in the town’s history.
As my trip came to an end, I left with a heart full of cherished memories. The history and traditions of my hometown were not relics of the past but living, breathing parts of the present, firmly grounding me in my roots.
4. Why did the author visit the town hall upon arriving at the hometown?
A. It was full of historical significance. B. It was newly decorated with pictures.
C. A special exhibition was held there. D. His friends were waiting for him there.
5. What can we know about the harvest festival?
A. It is mainly to promote local handmade things.
B. People eagerly focus on the delicious food during it.
C. It unites activities related to the town’s heritage.
D. Tourists from all over the world come to celebrate it.
6 What role did the old mill play in the town’s history?
A. The culture center for the town. B. The key place to feed the town.
C. The origin of the town’s traditions. D. The vivid description of the town.
7. What is the main purpose of the author writing this passage?
A. To describe the development of his hometown.

Google has introduced Interview Warmup, a tool designed to help job seekers to become more confident and comfortable with job interviews. The tool, first announced in October 2022 at the second Google for Africa Event, was designed to help Google Career Certificates learners prepare for job interviews. It is now available for everyone to use.
According to Google, an average job listing in Africa attracts over 2,400 applicants. And this means that the chances of landing a job can be slim. The company also noted that interviewing in a new field can be hard, especially when the job seeker does not have friends, family, or mentors who can help them practice and prepare.
Interview Warmup enables job seekers to practice answering questions carefully selected by industry experts. Users can start practising by clicking on the homepage, choosing the job they are interviewing for, and then do a practice interview that consists of five randomly (随机) selected questions or individual interview questions.
Once the user answers a question, the tool turns it into written words in real-time and provides feedback using machine learning. Besides this, the tool’s machine learning also identifies certain job-related terms and phrases that are overused and generates common “talking points” to improve responses.
Head of Brand and Reputation at Google Africa, Mojolaoluwa Aderemi-Makinde, said, “We are excited about Interview Warmup because it shows how new technologies have the potential to help young people in Africa develop the skills needed to grow their careers. The tool can help create more opportunities for African job seekers.”
“As important as it is to learn the skills needed to perform well on a new job, it is even more important to learn the skills needed to qualify for roles,” she added.
According to her, the Interview Warmup tool strengthens Google’s commitment to continue helping job seekers in Africa with their interview skills and prepare them for the careers they want.
8. How does Interview Warmup help job seekers?
A. By reducing their mental pressure.

A home science experiment recently took the world by storm. Two teens from Toronto, in Canada, sent a Lego man rising above the Earth and captured their tiny astronaut’s trip on film.
Mathew Ho and Asad Muhammad, both 17, used a weather balloon to launch their plastic lego model 16 miles above the Earth. This is inside a part of Earth’s atmosphere.
The two teens were inspired by a similar project performed by students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The MIT students had launched a weather balloon with a camera into near space and taken many unusual images of the Earth. Mathew and Asad then spent four months figuring out how to launch their own spacecraft into the space. Traveling to space is expensive for NASA, but Mathew and Asad worked hard to keep their costs down. They bought much of their equipment used. In total, the project cost only $400.
“We had a lot of anxiety on launch day because there were high winds when we were going up,” Mathew told reporters. They had to pump extra helium (氦) into the balloon so that it would rise quickly and avoid being blown too far off course by the strong winds. The toy astronaut’s journey lasted 97 minutes before the balloon broke and he fell back to Earth. Mathew and Asad then spent two weekends looking for their spacecraft. It had landed 76 miles away from the launch site.
The student scientists are currently finishing up their final year of high school and applying for colleges. They are also looking into more doityourself space projects. “I guess the sky is not really the limit anymore,” Mathew told reporters. “We never knew we’d get this far. It’s been a lesson for us that hard work pays off.”

A. harmed the world B. flooded the world C. attracted the world D. managed the world
13. Which of the following about the students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is right?
A. They were examples for Mathew Ho and Asad Muhammad.
B. They helped Mathew Ho and Asad Muhammad to achieve dream.
C. They launched weather balloon together with Mathew Ho and Asad Muhammad.
D. They studied with Mathew Ho and Asad Muhammad in the same school.
14. How did Mathew and Asad keep their costs down?
A. By making the weather balloon themselves. B. By borrowing spacecraft from the MIT students.
C. By making their spacecraft by hand. D. By using secondhand equipment.
15. What problems did Mathew and Asad have on launch day?
A. They ran out of helium. B. The wind was too strong.
C. The balloon suddenly broke. D. Their spacecraft was blown away.
