American Jake Pinnick comes from a small town called Kewanee.
Pinnick said when he told friends and family he wanted to go to the Wudang Kungfu Academy in China, the response was typical. “It’s not a usual thing to say, but it is pretty normal for kids to want to get out of a place like Kewanee. Most kids say something like they want to move to Hollywood and become an actor,” said the 30-year-old. “When I first thought about it, it was daydreaming for myself, too.”
Once he found himself at the academy, Pinnick said fitting in was softened by other foreigners who were in the area and a part of the school. Getting used to the way of life was surprisingly easy given the peaceful nature to it. Pinnick said after a while, he found himself more at home in Wudang than he ever felt back home in Kewanee. Locals were more than welcoming and willing to engage.
“The culture shock wasn’t that bad. Surprisingly, I find I have more of that going back to America now... learning the language did take some time, but everyone around the school was familiar with foreigners, so we had a lot of fun speaking broken English and Chinese back and forth at the start.”
After he settled into a routine. Pinnick set about engaging himself in Chinese culture, including Kungfu-training. He was also attracted by the philosophical tradition most well-known for the idea of living in harmony with the universe.
Pinnick said he had to go home after the first six months and immediately wanted to return to China, feeling as if it had now become his home more than America, and he had begun a process of rewriting himself as a person overseas.
His life now goes around training, teaching and studying. He graduated from the academy in 2014 and still helps teach there.
Pinnick said the goal is to one day return to America and teach what he has learned. Looking back on his amazing journey, Pinnick said he has grown by leaps and bounds from a small-town American kid who had a daydream he could not shake.
4. What did Pinnick’s family think of his idea of learning Kungfu?
A. Creative. B. Disappointing. C. Challenging. D. Unrealistic.
5. What mainly helped Pinnick get used to the life in China?
A. His fluent Chinese. B. The friendly local culture.
C. His peaceful nature. D. Other foreign teachers there.
6. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Pinnick planned to leave for Hollywood when he was a kid.
B. At the start, Pinnick needn’t spend much time in learning Chinese.
C. Pinnick began to write a book after he settled in Wudang Academy.
D. Pinnick’s life now consists of training, teaching and studying.
7. What did Pinnick gain from his experience in China?
A. A large fortune. B. A career choice.
C. A Kungfu certificate. D. A good reputation.

I know people who say they don’t watch television, and I always nod and agree. Reading requires intelligence, and television is merely entertainment, right?
I’m going to Scotland this year, and three different people told me I must watch “Outlander” before I go, which is like “Game of Thrones” for fans of romance novels. I watched the first four-hour-long episodes back to back. When I stood up from the couch I felt sick, and it wasn’t just the cookies, popcorn and peanut butter sandwiches I’d had without noticing. It was dark outside, and I felt ashamed. I had spent half a day on the couch. Research for Scotland? Not exactly.
A few days later I had a library book due: The National Book Award winner The Friend, by Sigrid Nunez. I needed to finish it, so I read the last half straight through. I was absorbed in Nunez’s New York City, worrying about the heroine’s career and her future. I finished the book with tears in my eyes and stood up feeling, well, great.
I had wasted another four hours on my couch. I hadn’t eaten as much junk food because I needed my hands free — and not sticky — so I could turn pages and return the book to the library relatively clean, but I hadn’t moved and once again it was dark outside. Why did I feel so much better and guilt-free?
All the research says reading a book is good for you. It reduces stress, promotes comprehension and imagination, relieves depression, helps you sleep and may contribute to preventing Alzheimer’s The act of physically turning a page creates a momentary pause for understanding to sink in. Our brains have to work to translate the black squiggles (弯弯曲曲的线条) on the page into words and then interpret the meaning and intent (意图) of those words. When a character is described as tall with brown hair, a reader creates her own picture. TV takes all that imagination away. But there’s a lot of good TV now. I’d like to say the answer to TV versus books must be, as Aristotle said, “Moderation in all things,” though he never had a television or a computer and had to read his scrolls by candlelight. I agree that too much television is bad for you. I know I feel better if I read, but it won’t stop me from watching too: My second DVD of “Outlander” has just arrived, and as soon as I get this essay done, the rest of my day is free.
8. By “I always nod and agree” (paragraph 1), the author implies that ______ .
A. she doesn’t think highly of TV either
B. she believes those who say they don’t watch TV
C. she should be polite to get the conversation to go on
D. she is not willing to admit that she watches television
9. The phrase “back to back” (paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to “ ______ ”.
A. from morning till night B. one after another without a break
C. looking at the opposite direction D. leaning against the back of the couch
10. The author felt better after reading The Friend than watching “Outlander”, most probably because ______ .
A. she didn’t feel hungry for any snacks
B. the TV series got her to cancel her trip to Scotland
C. the television series was no more attractive than the book
D. she regarded reading as more rewarding than watching TV
11. What can be concluded from all the research introduced in paragraph 5?
A. Reading is active while watching TV is passive.
B. Reading involves physical exercises while watching TV doesn’t.
C. Reading stimulates the brain to concentrate while watching TV doesn’t.
D. Reading is good for one’s mental health while watching TV is bad for it.
D
Cows love having an open area of grassland to graze on. But in some parts of the world, this is only possible during the summer. In the winter months, it can become too cold for cows to safely stay outside, so they are kept in a large farm building for warmth. Being stuck inside is not always pleasant for the cattle, and their unhappiness is closely connected to less milk production.
For this reason, some cattle owners have fitted their cows with VR headsets that run a program specifically. The program simulates grassland in summer and was designed specifically for the way that cows get color and light. According to the National Library of Medicine, cattle see shades of red the easiest but have a hard time distinguishing between blue and green.
Reports from a farm in Moscow, Russia — where the VR headsets were first developed by vets — found in 2019 that the cows that used the VR headsets saw a decrease in anxiety and an improved mood. This led to an increase in milk production; which went from 5.8 gallons to 7 gallons a day.
Cattle owner Izzet Kocak from Aksaray, Turkey, heard about this experiment and tried the VR headsets on his cows in December 2021. When Kocak put the headsets on his cows, he found an improvement in the emotional well-being of his animals. “They are watching an area of grassland, and it gives them an emotional boost. They are less stressed,” he said.
The technology is now being passed around the world. According to the BBC, the headsets were made specifically for the “structural features of cow heads” by vets, and the animals were shown a “unique summer field simulation program”. The familiar sight of an area of grassland is enough to improve the mood of the entire herd.
Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation says that research has shown a link between a cow’s emotional state and its milk production. They stated, “Examples of dairy farms from different countries show that in a calm atmosphere, the quantity of milk increases markedly.”
12. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. The cows can produce milk normally in the winter.
B. The cows prefer to live in a misty environment.
C. The VR headsets operate a unique program.
D. The VR headsets only display three colors.
13. What’s the result of cows’ wearing the VR headsets?
A. They could distinguish between blue and green.
B. Their milk production rose accordingly.
C. Their physical health improved greatly.
D. They could adapt to winter easily.
14. What concept is behind the VR headset program?
A. High tech is necessary in the dairy field.
B. A silent environment helps cows stay healthy.
C. Natural grassland is better for the milk quality.
D. A cow with good moods can produce more milk.
15. Which can be the best title for this passage?
A. Keeping cows inside benefits a lot.
B. VR headsets boost milk production.
C. VR technology sees farming development.
D. Depressed emotion affects the quality of milk.

On a summer vacation morning, I went to a bookstore with my mom. As we stepped through the entrance, a large sign immediately captured my attention. It read, “Books: Open Doors to New Worlds. Discover, Dream, Delight.” These words seemed to dance in the sunlight, leading me to explore all the wonders they promised.
When we made our way between the shelves, I spotted a beautiful book with a cover that was a masterpiece of colors and images. Unconsciously, my hand reached out to trace the outlines of the illustrations. I turned to my mom, my eyes begging for this book, but she shook her head with a sad expression. Our family was going through a tough time financially, and there was no room for such an expensive purchase. Disappointed, I dragged my feet and left.
The next day, unable to resist the temptation, I found myself back at the store. I slipped the book into my bag, my hands trembling with a mix of excitement and guilt. Just as I was about to leave, the store owner noticed me. I froze, my face flushing with shame as I was caught red-handed. He stared at me, from whose eyes I could feel the judgement. I wanted to disappear, but there was no escape. With a shaky voice, I admitted stealing the book, and promised to make things right. As I walked out, the sign seemed to scold me. It was a reminder that the world I entered by a wrong path was disheartening.
I walked home slowly, each step filled with fear. When I saw my mom, I burst into tears and told her the truth. She looked disappointed, but there was a glimmer of relief in her eyes that I was honest. She hugged me and said softly, “You made a mistake, but you had the courage to face it. Remember, there are always right ways to get what you want.” I nodded. After a moment of silence, my mom said, “Let’s make things right.”

D 5. B 6. D 7. B

A 9. B 10. D 11. A
根据第一段中“I know people who say they don’t watch television, and I always nod and agree. Reading requires intelligence, and television is merely entertainment, right?(我知道有些人说他们不看电视,我总是点头表示同意。阅读需要智力,而电视仅仅是娱乐,对吗?)”可知,作者通过“总是点头同意”暗示自己也不看好电视。故选A。
根据第二段中“I watched the first four-hour-long episodes back to back. When I stood up from the couch I felt sick, and it wasn’t just the cookies, popcorn and peanut butter sandwiches I’d had without noticing. It was dark outside, and I felt ashamed.(我back to back看了第一集四小时长的剧集。当我从沙发上站起来时,我感到不舒服,这不仅仅是因为我不经意地吃了饼干、爆米花和花生酱三明治。外面很黑,我感到很惭愧)”可知,作者连续不断地看了四小时的剧集,直到天黑都没有发现。因此,“back to back”在此处的意思是“一个接一个,不间断地”。与选项B“one after another without a break (一个接一个不间断)”一致。
根据第四段中“Why did I feel so much better and guilt-free? (为什么我感觉好多了,而且没有负罪感呢?)”以及第五段中“All the research says reading a book is good for you.(所有的研究都表明读书对你有好处)”可知,作者在阅读《朋友》后感觉更好,没有负罪感,是因为她认为阅读比看电视更有价值。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“Our brains have to work to translate the black squiggles (弯弯曲曲的线条) on the page into words and then interpret the meaning and intent (意图) of those words. When a character is described as tall with brown hair, a reader creates her own picture. TV takes all that imagination away.(我们的大脑必须努力将页面上的黑色曲线翻译成单词,然后解释这些单词的含义和意图。当一个角色被描述为棕色头发的高个子时,读者会自己想象出她的样子。电视把所有的想象力都带走了)”可知,从第五段介绍的所有研究中可以得出:阅读是主动的,而看电视是被动的。故选A。
C 13. B 14. D 15. B

根据第二段“For this reason, some cattle owners have fitted their cows with VR headsets that run a program specifically. The program simulates grassland in summer and was designed specifically for the way that cows get color and light.(因为这原因,一些养牛户给他们的奶牛戴上了专门运行一个程序的VR头显。这个程序模拟夏天的草原,并且是专门根据奶牛感知颜色和光线的方式设计的。)”可知,VR头显运行一个独特的程序。故选C项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Reports from a farm in Moscow, Russia—where the VR headsets were first developed by vets— found in 2019 that the cows that used the VR headsets saw a decrease in anxiety and an improved mood. This led to an increase in milk production; which went from 5.8 gallons to 7 gallons a day.(来自俄罗斯莫斯科一个农场的报告 ——VR 头显最初由兽医在那里研发 —— 在2019年发现,使用 VR 头显的奶牛焦虑感降低,情绪得到改善。这导致了产奶量的增加,每天的产奶量从5.8加仑增加到7加仑。)”可知,奶牛戴上VR头显后产奶量相应增加。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation says that research has shown a link between a cow’s emotional state and its milk production. They stated, ‘Examples of dairy farms from different countries show that in a calm atmosphere, the quantity of milk increases markedly.’(俄罗斯联邦农业部表示,研究表明奶牛的情绪状态与产奶量之间存在联系。他们指出,‘不同国家的奶牛场实例表明,在平静的氛围中,牛奶产量显著增加。’)”以及前文提到奶牛戴上VR头显后情绪改善进而产奶量增加,可推断出VR头显项目背后的理念是心情好的奶牛能产更多奶。故选D项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,特别是第二段“For this reason, some cattle owners have fitted their cows with VR headsets that run a program specifically. The program simulates grassland in summer and was designed specifically for the way that cows get color and light.(因为这原因,一些养牛户给他们的奶牛戴上了专门运行一个程序的VR头显。这个程序模拟夏天的草原,并且是专门根据奶牛感知颜色和光线的方式设计的。)”可知,文章主要讲述了一些养牛户给奶牛戴上VR头显,运行模拟夏天草原的独特程序,改善了奶牛的情绪,进而提高了产奶量。所以B选项“VR headsets boost milk production.(VR 头显提高牛奶产量)”能准确概括文章主旨。故选B项。

【答案】36. eighth
37. which 38. accessible
39. a 40. variety
41. allowed
42. what 43. considered
44. or 45. bringing
“ _____ is not understood and read by readers of modern English”是非限制性定语从句,修饰先行词Beowulf,指物,关系词将其代入从句中作主语,应用关系代词which引导该从句。故填which。
提示词作表语,表明主语“no complete translation of his work”的性质,用形容词accessible,意为“可获得的,可使用的”。
故填a。
“ _____ happens when a scholar translator only works on a single volume”是表语从句,从句中缺少主语,结合语境,此处表示“发生的事情”,用连接代词what引导该表语从句,并在从句中作主语。故填what。
“ _____ one of the most challenging works to translate”作状语,consider(认为)与其逻辑主语Du Fu’s collection of poetry之间是被动关系,用过去分词表被动。
“whether...or...” 故填or。
“ _____ a scholarly aid for the first time to English speaking readers ready to engage with China’s literary lion”作结果状语,bring(带来)是非谓语动词,与其逻辑主语Owen’s critical translation之间是主动关系,用现在分词表主动和自然而然的结果。

When I finished my summer job, the owner handed me the book with a smile.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As we walked back into the store, my heart was so heavy. However, encouraged by my mom, I gathered the courage and apologized to the store owner. Much to my surprise, the owner came up with an idea that he would give me the book as a reward for helping him in the store. Following his instructions carefully, I worked hard by dusting book covers and arranging books neatly on the shelves. As I was engaged in these tasks during the vacation, I came to realize the value of earning something through honest work.
When I finished my summer job, the owner handed me the book with a smile. I received the book with a sense of pride and gratitude. The owner patted me on the shoulder and offered words of praise. My mom was also proud of me for working diligently for my small dream. This scene made me even more aware of the significance of my efforts. As I walked out of the store, the sign seemed to smile at me. From that moment on, it was a constant reminder that a delightful new world should be unlocked through honesty and kindness.
